Hello and Welcome,

Let me get something out of the way: I am not a salesman.

That means that instead of trying to sell our course to you, we want to educate you about our course. You see, it is no good for either of us if you enrol in our course thinking that it is one thing, and then discovering that it is something else.

Instead, we want you to have as much information as possible so that you can make the best possible decision about whether what we are doing is something that you would like to be a part of.

It has become very clear to me that there are some questions that people like to ask about what we are doing and why we are doing it.

Have a look through the following pages to see if the answer to your question is here. If you don’t find what you are looking for, then get in touch on 1300 141 994 or send an email to [email protected]

If you decide that this is something that you would like to be part of, then I look forward to sharingyour success. If not, then I thank you for your time and wish you well in your endeavours.

PART ONEFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FORTRESS LEARNINGTAE40110 CERTIFICATE IV IN TRAINING & ASSESSMENT

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THIS TAE CERTIFICATE IV?

This is a fully accredited and complete course of study that allows you to gain the nationally recognised TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment.

It is the same course that TAFE and other Registered Training Organisations deliver, and also the same one thatTAFE and other organisations require you to have if you want to work as a trainer.

It is delivered online, although the whole course can be printed and completed away from a computer. It is intentionally developed for time poor people who are committed to succeeding.

WHO IS THIS PARTICULAR TAE10 COURSE FOR?

People who are able to study independently and who wish to earn more than just a piece of paper. It is delivered entirely online and requires the ability to use basic internet and email technologies. Being at Level 4 of the Australian Qualification Framework, English language and literacy skills to at least the standard of upper high school is recommended.

HOW DO I ENROL?

To keep our costs low, we process enrolments online at www.tae.fortresslearning.com.au

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I ENROL?

We create an online account for you- we call this your Dashboard- and send you the details of how to log in and get started. This usually happens within one business day.

You arrange payment.

Getting started means that you complete a short questionnaire that helps us to learn more about your previous and current life and work experiences. We use that information to map out a Personal Learning Plan for you- in simple terms, this means that we work out how to make your course fit you.

We add everything you need for your course to your Dashboard, including a printable copy of yourPersonal Learning Plan. You are now ready to get going.

You will be required to complete some of your tasks in an actual or simulated workplace.

You have 6 or 12 months depending on your payment from your date of commencement, not from the date of enrolment.

What worked for you?

“The flexible delivery, as well as the assessments. The assessments were based on exactly what you would do in the real world so I found them extremely relevant.”

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE PERSONAL LEARNING PLAN

No two people are the same.

For us, making you jump through the same hoops as everyone else just doesn’t make sense.

That’s why we collect a bit more information from you before you start, and use it to tailor your ownPersonal Learning Plan.

Quite simply, every student who enrols has a course of study put together just for them.

Your Personal Learning Plan becomes your unique roadmap for how you can make your way through the course. It reflects your unique set of knowledge and skills, and uses your preferred learning style as a basis for how things are done.

It will tell you exactly which tasks you need to do, which other items of evidence you need to provide to support any Recognition of Prior Learning claim, and a step-by-step guide to doing it all with the least hassle.

You can update your Personal Learning Plan at anytime throughout your studies.

IF I ENROL, AM I GUARANTEED A PLACE?

Places in this program are offered on a first come basis.

Enrolments are processed in the order in which they are received, and places are allocated in the order in which fees are received. You get to nominate when you would like to begin, but if that particular month is fully subscribed, then we will let you know and invite you to select another month, or we can keep your application active in case someone else changes out of that month.

The only exception here is people who come to us by word of mouth- they get to start whenever they want, and we reserve places especially for them.

WHY DO YOU LIMIT PLACES IF YOU WANT TRAINING TO BE MORE ACCESSIBLE?

This is a difficult issue. Although the majority of work involved in this program is undertaken by students, there is still time and effort involved in managing and administering our Registered Training Organisation. We will never allow ourselves to get to the stage where we have more students than we can cater for.

WHO IS FORTRESS LEARNING? ARE YOU ACCREDITED?

The Fortress Learning is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), and our registration details are publicly available at training.gov.au. Our registration number is 31974.

The TAE10 Certificate IV in Training & Assessment is on our Scope of Registration. This means that the course that we deliver to you is nationally recognised as part of the National Training Framework, and that it adheres to the requirements of the Australian Qualifications Framework.

We must adhere to the same requirements as any other Registered Training Provider, be it TAFE or someone else.

In simpler terms, Fortress Learning is a Partnership between Chris Gribble and Bryan West, which sits within the GWF Pty Ltd company (if you didn’t work it out, GWF stands for Gribble West Families).

As well as being an RTO, we provide consulting services to other organisations. In recent times, this has included:

• Supporting a personal fitness studio to become a Registered Training Organisation that delivers Certificates Ill and IV in Personal Training

• Developing a suite of online resources to enable disengaged young people in Cape York communities to gain the Certificate I in Work Readiness

• Constructing an online induction program for a Queensland organisation who has a large and dispersed workforce

• Designing websites and other corporate identification material, content management systems and learning management systems for several RTOs and other education and training institutions

• Undertaking a research project to determine the return on training investment for one of the national Industry Skills Councils

PART ONEFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FORTRESS LEARNINGTAE40110 CERTIFICATE IV IN TRAINING & ASSESSMENT

What worked for you?

“I was a little apprehensive about studying online at the start, however, it was an easy process and all the training materials I required were readily available to me. If I ever needed any help, I knew that I could make a quick call and I would be speaking with one of the trainers and they would spend the time talking to me to ensure I got the help I needed.”

PART ONEFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FORTRESS LEARNINGTAE40110 CERTIFICATE IV IN TRAINING & ASSESSMENT

WHAT DO I ACTUALLY LEARN IN THE COURSE?

The central focus of the TAE10 Training and Assessment Training Package is the learner and the learning process. You will learn how to:

• Create a meaningful learning environment which includes the application of inclusive work practices, responsiveness to diversity, developing a culture that supports learning, ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment, developing and maintaining knowledge of the vocational education and training system, maintaining currency.

• Design learning processes and learning products that enable the learner to learn.• Manage, guide, facilitate and monitor the learning process and to provide meaningful learning

experiences.• Measure progress in learning and judge whether competence has been demonstrated.

The Learning Design Field addresses competence in designing learning processes and learning products that enable the learner to learn.

The Delivery and Facilitation Field addresses the skills and knowledge needed to manage, guide, facilitate and monitor the learning process and to provide meaningful learning experiences. The Assessment Field addresses the competence of measuring progress in learning and judging whether competence has been demonstrated.

IS IT HARD?

This is an important question, because it really gets to the heart of another question that people have:

Certificate IV: what does it mean?

According to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), Learning Outcomes from a course of training at the Certificate IV level would possess the following characteristics:

• Breadth, depth and complexity of knowledge and competencies would cover a broad range of varied activities or application in a wider variety of contexts most of which are complex and non-routine.

• Leadership and guidance are involved when organising activities of self and others as well as contributing to technical solutions of a non-routine or contingency nature.

• Performance of a broad range of skilled applications including the requirement to evaluate and analyse current practices, develop new criteria and procedures for performing current practices and provision of some leadership and guidance to others in the application and planning of the skills. Applications involve responsibility for, and limited organisation of, others.

PART ONEFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FORTRESS LEARNINGTAE40110 CERTIFICATE IV IN TRAINING & ASSESSMENT

If you are competent in a Certificate IV then you can:

• demonstrate understanding of a broad knowledge base incorporating some theoretical concepts apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems

• identify and apply skill and knowledge areas to a wide variety of contexts, with depth in some areas• identify, analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources• take responsibility for own outputs in relation to specified quality standards• take limited responsibility for the quantity and quality of the output of others

So, to answer the question of how hard it is, you can have a think about that list of things - if that seems doable, then so is this course.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO IN THIS COURSE?

Being a self-paced program that is delivered online, you will need to read material that is provided, watch brief explanatory videos and demonstrations that are provided, and practise using both the knowledge and skills that they introduce.

The course is assessed through a combination of short-response tasks (that assess your knowledge) and projects (that assess your skills). More detailed information about how you will be assessed is included in Part Two.

If you are like most of our students, then you will include at least a small portion of your work-based activity as part of your course. This is worked out as part of your Personal Learning Plan, and it means that you will need to collect some evidence of what you have done.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME?

Experience tells us that self-paced students can complete the course in as little as 3 months, and wehave had one woman complete it in 2 weeks. However, the average length of time would be about 6months.

While the course is notionally 300 or more hours in length, the way that we have created an almost seamless single course of study instead of 10 separate topics means that you could do it more efficiently. Successful students tend to allocate a night or two a week, and the occasional weekend, and regular allocation of time and a disciplined approach are needed to improve your chances of success.

We can provide you with a study programme that gives you a schedule of what to do each week inorder to complete the course in 3 months, 6 months or 12 months.

What worked for you?

“Pretty much all of it – especially the fact that the course was done all at my own pace.”

CAN I GET RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING? DO I GET A DISCOUNT?

All students are eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), and information about this isprovided once you have enrolled.

Because the course is already heavily discounted, there is no further discount for students wanting toapply for RPL. For us, RPL is just as – if not more – time consuming as the full course.

There is a place on the Enrolment Form to indicate that you are interested in RPL, and the Personal Learning Plan survey that we ask you to complete before beginning will give you the chance to tell us more about the sorts of things that we might be able to “recognise”.

Because so many students do not actually know what they could include as RPL, we look at this for youas a part of developing your Personal Learning Plan.

I DID THE BSZ AND/OR TAA CERTIFICATE IV IN WORKPLACE TRAINING ANDASSESSMENT. WHAT ELSE DO I HAVE TO DO?

Because we need to be certain that you are competent on the day that we award the qualification, we will consider not just when you completed your other qualification, but what you have been doing since then. To help you work out which upgrade option is most suitable for you, we have developed a decision making flow chart, which you will find at www.fortresslearning.com.au.

I HAVE TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS? WHAT ELSE DO I HAVE TO DO?

Teachers tend to receive RPL for about half of the course. This means that some teachers have only 4-6 units to complete in order to be awarded the TAE qualification.

Once enrolled, we will walk you through this process.

There is a place on the Enrolment Form to indicate that you are a teacher.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO DO THE COURSE?

You are able to enrol for 6 months or 12 months, with extensions of time available at an additionalmonthly fee.

HOW DO YOU CATER FOR MY OWN LEARNING STYLE?

We designed our course so that there were always a few different ways of doing things. For starters, the Personal Learning Plan allows your course to be developed to reflect your requirements. Also, every element of our course has been assembled so that you don’t have to go through the course in the same way or the same order as someone else.

One of the things that underpinned our design process for this course was an understanding of some common learning styles. One tool we use to help us develop your Personal Learning Plan is our Learning Styles Inventory. We made this ourselves to ensure that you could more efficiently make your way through your own course in a way that best suited you.

You can take a look at the Learning Styles Inventory and discover how your studies with us might reflectyour needs here: http://fortresslearning.com.au/Learning_Styles/main.html

PART ONEFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FORTRESS LEARNINGTAE40110 CERTIFICATE IV IN TRAINING & ASSESSMENT

IF I CANNOT START NOW, CAN I START LATER AT THE SAME PRICE?

Yes and no. If you enrol now, you can do so at this price, and then choose to commence at any time in thenext 12 months. If you do not enrol now, then there is no guarantee that you will be able to enrol at a latertime for the current price. Just like an airline, we have a limited number of places available at the currentprice.

We expect our prices to rise once the quota is met.

WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?

There are a number of reasons, ranging from philosophical to ethical and economic and pragmatic.

Philosophically, we believe that business should support the values held by a society. As a progressive liberal democracy, it is important that we as a business accept our responsibility to uphold basic rights. Article 26 of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights makes clear that education should be made “generally available … and equally accessible to all on the basis of merit”.

Ethically, we are not comfortable with the idea that students should be charged as if they do require more time and effort than they actually do.

Economically, Fortress Learning was from the outset established using a very low cost business model. This means that the fees you pay to study with us do not keep us in fancy cars, big offices and long lunches. Also, we built our whole business model by starting with our target price and subtracting our required margin of return: this led us to control costs and expenses to ensure that we could offer what is called value innovation. A simple example of this in practice is that our online mode of delivery means that you do not need to pay for training rooms that you will never see.

Pragmatically, we have a challenge. Our TAE is different from others. We are probably personally a bit different from others. Chris has a Masters in Education (Online Learning) and Bryan has a Doctor of Philosophy. Between us, we have a few decades of experience in making learning happen. We are concerned about how the Certificate IV can be designed for delivery to people – and people are not the same.

So, the way people go about doing the course should likewise be not the same. We do not require people to all jump through a series of hoops in the same order and at the same time. Instead, we bring the course to people so that you are able to connect its skills and knowledge with your own world – that’s what your Personal Learning Plan is about. In short, our focus is learning. But, if we charge the same as other providers, then people seem to expect the same from us that they have come to expect from others.

So, we have a choice. We can make our prices three times higher than the average to reflect our quality. The problem with that approach is that it doesn’t match our philosophy, ethics and economics. Thealternative as we see it is instead to make our prices three times lower and take the opportunity to explainto people that the reason why we are so far removed from what everyone else is charging is because weare so far removed from what everyone else is doing.

PART ONEFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FORTRESS LEARNINGTAE40110 CERTIFICATE IV IN TRAINING & ASSESSMENT

What worked for you?

“Because it was offered as an online course and for its low cost.”

Michala

HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT YOUR COURSE IS COMPREHENSIVE AND YETCHARGE A THIRD WHAT MANY TAE COURSES COST?

It seems almost human nature to judge quality based on price. We are comfortable with that. After all, our face to face courses start at $4000 per person. Without exception, those students tell us that at $4000, this fee is still good value, but their courses are based on a different economic model to this online offering. However, we think with something like nationally accredited training, we are better off comparing what is delivered with what the Training Package says should be delivered.

As part of being a Registered Training Organisation, we need to collect information and each year we send a report to the national authorities. One of the things we need to report on is Learner Engagement, and above are our results for 2013. This table was just cut out of the same report that gets sent to ASQA.

We tend to think these results speak for themselves.

Also, we can easily show exactly where in our course the mandatory components of each of the 11 Units of Competency are embedded. We can easily show how every page and every task and every project has been mapped to the Elements and Performance Criteria of each of these Units.

For us, we cannot help but wonder if a better question is to ask why it is that some TAE courses cost somuch but actually deliver so little?

WHAT IF I NEED LONGER TO DO THE COURSE? OR NEED TO TAKE A BREAK?

Just let us know about your circumstances and we will do what we can to accommodate your needs. We understand that your studies with us will be just one of many commitments in your life. Not surprisingly, lots of people want to know what they have to do to be assessed in this course. In simple terms, there are two types of assessment: Assignments and Short Answer Questions. Because our course is so highly integrated, so too are its assessment items. This is called holistic assessment.

It doesn’t seem to happen much in Vocational Education & Training, which is strange since it actually teaches us that assessing in this way is precisely what we should be doing.

Let’s have a look at each form of assessment that you will be likely to experience.

1. Projects

There are three main groups of assignment. Each relates to one of the three fields of study in the course: Design, Delivery and Assessment.

Depending on the precise nature of your Personal Learning Plan, you may need to complete all, some or one. In some cases, we also create alternate tasks, but we will talk about that once you have commenced.

The projects are as follows:

Projects 1a, b and c - Plan some accredited and non-accredited training to meet a client’s needs

Projects 2a, b and c - Prepare and deliver a training session, a series of consecutive training sessions, and an individual and/or workplace learning event.

Projects 3a, b and c - Prepare and execute an Assessment Plan, and participate in the validation of your Plan.

Project 4 - Identify the LLN requirements of a learner, of some training, and develop strategies to address gaps between the two.

Depending on your particular Personal Learning Plan, you may be required to complete all of these, only some, or maybe none at all.

2. Short Answer Questions

Short Answer Questions allow you to demonstrate your underpinning knowledge and some underpinning skills from across the whole course. There are around 80 tas ks, in each of which you will find a link to one or two online pages. The tasks are organised in such a way that you progress logically through the entire course. Depending on your particular Personal Learning Plan, you may be required to complete all of these, only some, or maybe none at all.

3. Our Commitment to Quality

Every assessment task includes a Have Your Say box at the end. For us, it is one of the most important parts of our assessment design. It is actually a r equirement o f t he Standards for NVR Registered Training Organisations that we collect al l sorts o f data and information a s pa rt of o ur continuous improvement processes.

We realised very quickly that one of the common places where students get stuck is in the assessment tasks – by collecting feedback from students at every task, we can quickly discover anything that needs to be changed or clarified or improved so that the next student who comes along will not encounter the same problem. Actually, it is because of this level of feedback that we are confident that most students do not actually need much assistance, and why we are able to confidently offer this low support delivery model. You will be required to complete some of your tasks in an actual or simulated workplace.

PART THREEWHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

Why did you choose to do the course with Fortress Learning?

“The price initially and the convenience of doing it at home while I was pregnant. I had much practical experience already so I figured I should be able to do the online version. I started doing the face to face course and found it very boring and I had already learned the content in my BEd hons degree many years ago.”

What worked for you?

“The fact that I could do it in my own timeframe, the clear instructions provided when relevant. The encouraging words from staff members, the well laid out questions and coursework.”

Lisa

“I would strongly recommend Fortress Learning as a company for an online study program. They live by their work standards and it is clear the ‘practice what they preach’. They are professional and extremely cooperative…I always felt that I was being supported to complete the qualification and positive that they would help me whenever I needed help. Overall it was a positive experience and great value for money.”

Carol

What worked for you?

“Being committed to doing the course as doing online can be hard if you don’t make yourself the time to do it and being disciplined which I am it helps a lot.”

Pauline

Why did you choose to do the course with Fortress Learning?

“Fortress was recommended by a number of TAFE colleagues.”

Is there anything else you’d like to include?

“Great organisation, good communication and terrific support.”

PART THREEWHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

“I found the people of Fortress Learning to be very supportive, flexible and understanding. They are very aware that not all students are the same and very diverse situations. Responses to assessment submissions and emails were very quick and helpful and submitting assessments via the dashboard was very efficient. I found the work challenging and very rewarding and I finished with a great sense of achievement and excitement.”

Jo

What worked for you?

“I highly recommend this course to anyone considering it. Although I am involved with training as part of my current job, by doing the course I learnt a lot that I was previously unaware of.”

Amy

“It is painless and easy to navigate the Fortress website. Any questions that may arise are answered promptly.”

Michele

What worked for you?

“Having guidance from my trainer Scott. Assisting me with RPL questions and many emails about the units to complete. With his support it was easy to keep focused and complete the course on time.”

Janette

What advice would you give to others considering studying this course in this way?

“Do it! There is support available all the way through and the flexibility makes it so easy to tick off the tasks. My tutor was great in answering my questions and although you are not in the classroom you do not feel isolated.”

PART THREEWHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

“How long does it take? - that’s up to you, I intend to spread it over a year. There is a lot of work involved so if you want to do it in a month prepare for a full on commitment. How hard is it?- it takes you out of your comfort zone so it depends how flexible you are and how willing to engage with new topics. It is not a walk in the park.

Easy to navigate? - like all web stuff it is trial and error. If you have used online learning tools before it should not be to difficult.

How long does it take for someone to get back to me if I have a question?- email responses are prompt.

Turnaround time for marking? - excellent.

How flexible is it if I need to take time off ? - very, you can work at own pace and fit it around other commitments.

Is the course a ‘real’ course, are there any hidden costs? - no hidden cost so far and yes it is definitely a real course.”

“I was impressed with the professionalism of any staff member I spoke to or was in contact with at Fortress Learning. The response timeframes were excellent as was the timeframe I received my Certificate. Well done to Fortress Learning, many other RTOs could ‘take a note out of your book’! Thanks Luke.”
