1670 by John Pawson, a merchant of the city of Yorke, England. ◦ "Came John Pawson of the County of Anne

Arundel merchant and proved right to five hundred acres of land for transporting … Adam Shipleigh (+9 others)… in February, 1668”

The Shipley Name Anglo-Saxon Recorded in the Domesday Book Used prior to present form of English

language Shipley is most common spelling. Variants: ◦ Shipleigh Shipeley Shaplie ◦ Sheplie Shepley Chipley

Cambridge Dictionary of English Place-Names ◦ scīp ('sheep', a Northumbrian dialect form,

contrasting with the Anglian dialect form scēp which underlies modern English sheep) ◦ lēah ('open ground, such as meadow, pasture, or

1675 “Before Charles Calvert, came Adam Shipley of Anne Arundel Co. Maryland, and proved his right to Eoden du fifty (50) acres for his time of service performed in the Province. Warrant then granted to Adam Shipley for fifty acres of land due him as above.”

THE FIRST, on Elk Ridge (near Columbia) Marker dedicated 1987 to commemorate

the 300th anniversary of the first large land grant in what is now Howard County.

Founding- The First Gathering Formed October 4, 1925, at Bethesda Methodist Church,

Gist, Carroll County MD. Organized by ◦ Robert H.H. Shipley, farmer, school board member, postal employee ◦ Ulysses Hayes Shipley, farmer and school teacher who perceived

the desirability of pursuing ties of kinship beyond local boundaries ◦ Larkin Amos Shipley, historian and lawyer noted for his absorption

in genealogy and historical facts

Heavy rain curtailed attendance to about 125 Meeting began with a devotional service followed by lunch,

talks about family origins, and a musical program So enjoyable and informative decided on yearly gatherings

Founding Shipleys outnumbered others in attendance,

but related families included ◦ Barnes, Bennett, Conaway, Creswell, Davis,

Dorsey, Dudderer, Easton, Farver, Flater, Fleming, Gallion, Gorrell, Haines, Myerly, Niner, Parrish, Pool, Shreve, Thompson, Warehime, Zepp

"Excelsior" was adopted as motto (ever upward)

Green and gold were chosen as colors Four-leaf clover chosen as official flower

Purpose is to provide repository for records, artifacts, items, and memorabilia pertaining to Shipleys of Maryland history and genealogy. ◦ HSCC will place items from the Dorothy Shipley Granger

Collection in the room ◦ Other records, artifacts, items, and memorabilia belonging to the

Shipleys of Maryland (or individual members) and relevant to Shipley family history or genealogy may be included in the room for display, storage and reference
