The Trust held a successful AGM attended by 22 people on 24th Septem-

ber . As usual the main business was to adopt The Directors’ Annual Report

and Annual Accounts. Steven Bews, Simon Meason and Andy Spence-Jones,

previously co-opted board members, stood down having indicated that they

would be willing to stand for election and were duly elected.

After the formal business was over Nic Thake, Service Manager, gave a short

talk about his role and what he hopes to achieve in the forthcoming year. A

short discussion followed and a number of helpful suggestions were made by

members.

Any members who were not able to attend the meeting would be welcome to

visit the office to see the relevant documents. If not yet a member please con-

sider joining us.

After the AGM the new board comprising John Rodwell, Steve Bacon, Steven

Bews, Simon Meason and Andy Spence-Jones met to elect office bearers for

the coming year. These are as follows: Chair, John Rodwell; Vice Chair, Andy

Spence Jones and Treasurer, Steve Bacon. The board then confirmed Debbie

Sarjeant’s reappointment as Company Secretary.

New Role by Nic Thake

At the start of September I took up my new, three-day-a-week, position at the Development

Trust as Service Manager. For me it has been a month in which I have listened a lot and learnt a

great deal. Yesterday evening, at the AGM I was I able to give a short presentation about my

role; during it I made a promise that I will keep listening and keep learning – learning from you.

My core role, as defined in my job description, is to “support the board in meeting the needs of

the community – by taking a partnership approach to the management of the Trust”

My key responsibilities as part of this partnership are:

Community Engagement

Continuous Improvement

Networking with other agencies

Networking with stakeholders

Managing staff and outsourced providers

Over the last year I have been lucky enough to spend a lot of my time studying how other island

communities manage their affairs. As a result I arrive in my new post full of ideas and eager to

find a practical use for my time spent in study. However, the direction in which I apply these

ideas is down to you. Y ou need to tell me what's needed, what's concerning you - what's right

about the Trust's work, what the Trust is missing out and even what the Trust is getting down-

right wrong. Continuous improvement can only come from a continuous conversation. I hope

that can start now.

Over the coming year I will try to create as many opportunities for consultation and engagement

as I can – and the first step towards this is to improve the flow of information to you. At the

next directors meeting, scheduled for 8th October, I have been asked to present proposals to im-

prove 'engagement'. I hope that my piece for Shapinsay Sound next month will be about that.

In the month ahead I shall also be spending some time looking at transport and especially how

the Trust communicates availability and cancellation. I will also be working on plans for the

boathouse with a report to the board on the 8th and follow-up after that. That will give me mate-

rial to prepare an information spread for comment. I have a three month deadline to prepare

plans.

An opportunity which I am eager to learn more about is the North Isles Landscape Partnership –

see elsewhere for details of the meeting on 9 October. From what I have learnt about the project

so far there may be opportunities for anyone interested in land use, heritage, artistic endeavour

and tourism to contribute to the planning process. It strikes me that is a pretty inclusive list and

that the project could lead to nature trails, heritage networks – perhaps even an opportunity for a

ranger for the island. What else I wonder?

On all of the above please let me know what you think.
