The Sewing Machine Buzz By Jeff Vogel NEW Loyalty Program Starts January 1st, 2016 Welcome to 2016! I am excited to announce a new Loyalty Program for Hi Fashion customers. I learned about this program at the Baby Lock Convention, and dealers that use it say their customers love it. We keep track of your six purchases, and on the seventh purchase you receive a nice savings. • Every customer is eligible, just ask for a card and start filling in boxes for a savings of 10% of the total all six purchases. • All purchases up to $1,000 qualify (even sewing machine purchases and service). Purchases must be 1 hour apart. • Your card will have 6 boxes. We will fill in a purchase amount (including sales tax) in each box and after the sixth purchase, the total of all six boxes will be added up and the savings calculated. That savings amount is available to use toward your next purchase. Even sale items apply. The savings are NOT transferable to other customers. • The cards will be kept in a filing system in the front of the store. The customer will select their card prior to check out, and the total will be filled in, initialed and returned to the file by store staff. • Multiple cards may be active at the same time. There is no limit on how many cards per year a customer can fill up. • Sew Savvy members will receive a special color card and a 15% savings rate on all qualified purchases as long as they are current members. • Machine and cabinet purchases over $3,000 will receive a 15% savings card for 3 years, and a special color card. • Special promotions will occur though out the year such as FREE BOX or DOUBLE BOX days. Watch your emails and Facebook. • This program will replace existing incentives and discounts such as; guild discounts, senior discounts, crazy eights, and non-profit. Any crazy eight cards started will be honored until filled up and used, limit one per customer. You still receive a discount; it just takes a loyalty of only 6 purchases. Our Sew Savvy club also has a few changes starting in 2016. The annual membership will remain $60. Members will receive 15% off on their loyalty card qualified purchase. On Sew Savvy meeting dates, Thursday thru Saturday, they will receive Double Boxes on their loyalty cards. Instead of two free classes you will receive two coupons for $25 each toward any class for twelve months. The discount feature is replaced with the loyalty program. The other benefits and incentives will continue as they were in 2015. Welcome 2016! We quilters would like a little extra time in our sewing worlds; a little more time to express our creativity and just play. I want to play with my wonderful sewing machine and all the pretty fabrics, let’s just forget about the “stressful stuff” and sew! Am I right? 2015 was a great year, a milestone in my life! Sometimes we tend to focus on the negative things in life as they seem to stand out more, in the news, in the neighborhood. If you let it, it can really wear on you. You start to wonder... ”What is wrong with people”? Then BAM! Some of my quilter friends do

something amazing! I mean really amazing; the kind of thing that rebuilds your faith in the kindness of people. I am so thankful to be part of a community of quilters.

Quilters have big hearts. It’s hard not to when you spend time with beautiful colors changing their shape into something that is 100% one of a kind. Heather’s Hangout...Hello again! I hope that you all had a wonderful Holiday Season and enjoyed time with your family.

I was able to be home for a few days at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and I enjoyed being in my sewing room working on projects for 2016. I have several fun classes planned for 2016.

BERNINA has wrangled me for another year, so I will be on the road again in 2016. I am enjoying my job and the experiences that I am having. Who knew a girl from a small town could have a job like this. I am blessed. I do, however, miss my customers from the store. When I am able to make it into Hi Fashion, it is always nice to see everyone, and even surprise a few of you by taking a class, not teaching it!

2016 will be full of fun and challenging classes hosted by me. I have classes planned for Hi Fashion that include the Mystery Quilt, Pinterest Party, Stash Busters, and a few fun bags. I will also be hosting a few classes that will be invitation only for some of our advanced students using the BERNINA Software.

Bobbin AlongLately we’ve been seeing a lot of the wrong bobbins being used in machines. We try to suggest the correct ones. But why does it matter?

First, some terms. The bobbin is what the thread is wound on and feeds off into the bottom of a sewing machine. The bobbin case is what the bobbin goes in and supplies the tension to the bobbin thread. The bobbin case normally can be removed from the machine, but not always.

The old days…

A “bullet” bobbin case and bobbin.

BobbinsMany bobbins seem to fit in a bobbin case. But that doesn’t make them the correct bobbin. If they’re too big around in diameter, they can rub up against the bobbin case, causing more tension than you want. If they’re too small around, they can wobble and spin erratically, which can cause jams.

If they are too big top to bottom they can rub against the hook driver or the bobbin case, again causing too much tension. If they’re too short, they can move up and down on the bobbin case spindle, causing erratic tension. Also, too short bobbins may force the thread to feel off at too sharp an angle, causing extra tension.

If you’re not sure what the correct bobbin is for your machine, bring in your bobbin case and your machine make and model. Or even better, just bring in your machine. We’ll make sure you get the correct bobbin for it!

Also, make sure your bobbins are in good condition. If they are metal, make sure they aren’t bent, nicked, or rusty. Nicks or cuts on plastic bobbins can catch thread, causing all kinds of problems. Just get rid of them! New ones are inexpensive.

Winding your bobbin properly is important. You want the thread to flow off the bobbin smoothly. Make sure there’s enough tension when you wind the bobbin (usually through a little spring loaded peg on the top of the machine). Take an extra turn around it, it won’t hurt anything. The bobbin should wind smoothly top to bottom. If not, bring your machine in to be adjusted. Be sure the bobbin doesn’t wind past the outside edge. That is adjusted with the bobbin stop. On many machines that can be adjusted by you.

Only wind ONE thread on a bobbin. Winding one thread over another existing thread on the bobbin can cause poor tension or worse, it can jam your machine! One bobbin, one thread.

One other important thing in winding a bobbin; the tail that you have when you start off winding the bobbin should not stick out of the bobbin. Cut it off as close to the bobbin as you can. If a tail

tech corner By Brian Davis

gets under the bobbin or around the edge it can rub on the inside of the bobbin case and create extra tension.

Pre-wound Bobbins: If you must use them (we’re not big fans), look online for thread pre-wound on PLASTIC bobbins. Paper pre-wound bobbins can shrink or expand due to humidity. They can tear, get bent or just have the outsides plain fall off. We’ve seen paper pre-wound bobbins with misshaped center holes. The potential problems are not worth the few yards of extra thread you get. I feel you should wind your own bobbins. Then you know exactly how they’re wound. The only machines that I know of that call for pre-wound paper bobbins are Baby Lock and Brother 6 and 10 needle embroidery machines, and they are very specific as to which brand to use.

Bobbin Cases and Bobbin Case TensionThe bobbin case is what supplies the tension to the bobbin thread. So it’s important to keep it clean. When doing your general cleaning (every two bobbins full) wipe out the inside of the bobbin case with a Q-tip. Don’t forget to run the Q-tip up the center hole if there is one. If you have a top loading machine with a black bobbin case, take it out. Clean it. If it’s outside the machine you can blow it out. And clean under where it rides!

Many sewers do machine embroidery as well as sewing. That means a different tension on your bobbin case. The same is true if you’re sewing with a really light weight bobbin thread and then switching to something like an upholstery bobbin thread. Your bobbin case tension needs to be adjusted.

An easy solution if you’re using one kind of thread for sewing and another thread (or even the same kind) for embroidery is to have two bobbin cases. One set for sewing tension and one set for embroidery tension. Many bobbin cases come set for those uses, or they have a way to thread them for extra tension.

If you sew with a wide variety of thread on your bobbins, you need to learn how to adjust your bobbin case tension. Rather than trying to explain how to do that here (as many bobbin cases are different), bring in your bobbin case, and a bobbin, and we’ll show you how to adjust it. No charge!

If you are ever in doubt of your bobbin tension, bring in your bobbin case with a bobbin full of the thread you want to use. If your bobbin case doesn’t come out of the machine, then bring in the machine. We’ll set the tension for you. Still, no charge! We want you to have the proper tension for sewing. You’ll be a happy camper if you do!

Bobbins--like needles and thread--are the least expensive part of your sewing projects. Don’t scrimp with these items. Use quality thread. Change your needle often. Use the correct needle for the project.

And use the correct bobbin. You’ll be glad you did!
