Page 5: The Seven Natural Wonders of Colombia

The Tatacoa’s Desert or Sadness Valley, as it was called by Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada in 1538, is not exactly a desert, but a dry tropical forest. In this place there is a lot of erosion, and few animal life and plant life, which adapted to the minimum conditions oh humidity and the high temperature. There, we will find animals such as: turtles, rodents, serpents, alligators, and eagles.

Plant life in this zone adapts to the weather conditions through horizontal roots up to 30 meters long, which obtain the access to water. The zone is crossed by dry canyons, which are developed in the winter. Those mysterious shapes create in the surface big mazes which can have a depth of 20 meters.

In addition, in this place it is possible to observe the 88 constellations, and also appreciate phenomenon like meteor rain. Because of its awesome landscape and because it is a good place for astronomic observation, this is the first of the seven wonders of Colombia.
