Big brother to the Ag-Boss, the Penetrator incorporates all the features of our lightercultivators/tilthers plus all the strength and tyne breakout required in a heavy dutyprimary tillage implement.

Designed from the ground up, the Penetrator is at home in controlled traffic, direct drill/minimum tillage and conventional cultivation. With this one versatile implement, today’sfarmer can plant small seeds with precision or in those tough years search down deepwith minimum till spear points - getting seed into the moisture band.

This vertically adjustable,multifunction shank with fullyproduction forged foot piece can beused in conjunction with spear pointassemblies, bolt-on spear probes,slim wedge systems and standard sweeps.

Standard specifications. The Penetrator can be supplied with edge-on curvedshaped or straight vertical tynes and either a mechanical spring or hydraulic jumpmechanism. Tyne break-outs range from 500 lbf in spring version, with a hydraulic tyneversion up to 650 lbf breakout. The fully production-forged 50x25mm edge-on tyne shanks(straight & curved) are suitable for 430, double bolt sweeps (2x1/2” UNC bolts).

MALCOLM DOOLIN, NORTH STAR, NSW.Among the most successful chickpeagrowers in the 2002 season was MalcolmDoolin of ‘Glenhoma’, North Star who wasselected as ‘Chickpea Farmer of the Year2002’ by Pulse Australia.

Malcolm uses a Gyral 12 metre PenetratorScari-chisel with a Quad Cart Seeder to

farm his 9,300 hectares. He direct drills, using curved tynes,500 lbf breakout and a controlled traffic configuration on 2metre centres, Malcolm uses the Penetrator to plant all hiscrops, which include wheat, barley, chickpeas, sorghum andfaba beans.

His 2002 winter crop was planted deep, seeking out whatmoisture was available. He planted into moisture, ataround150mm, knowing that with vigorous seed and the rightequipment he would get a good strike. Malcolm says that if itwasn’t for the Penetrator he would not have had all his plant-ing done at his preferred time. It allowed him to plant hischickpeas in mid May, which helped the crop escape some ofthe hot spring conditions.

It was Malcolm’s attention to detail that gained him the cropjudge’s attention, that, and a winning crop yield of 2.5 tonnes/hectare - excellent for the season and above average for thearea.

than waiting for planting rains, and then taking a chance onwhat seed is available.”

Andrew Hirst uses his Gyral Penetrator to plant into theavailable moisture at the correct time for the variety. This notonly gets the best out of the variety but also gets better resultsfrom any subsequent rainfall.

Andrew’s 12 metre Penetrator Scari-chisel is fitted with 500 lbfbreakout, curved tynes on 333mm spacing and in-frame presswheels to improve seed/soil contact. The unit is used in conjunc-tion with a Gyral Quad Cart SR pneumatic seeder.

Andrew is “stoked” with the rig’s ability to maintain accuratedepth and has found that the Penetrator’s higher breakoutpressures are ideal for direct drilling into tough field conditions.

In late 2002, Andrew planted sorghum in a paddock that hadsuffered severe pugging damage with 200 cows and 200weaners grazing sorghum stubble in the muddy conditionsfollowing 75mm of rain at Easter. Before a fall of some 75mmin early August the ground had been so hard “you couldn’t geta moisture probe into it.”

The versatility of the Penetrator came into its own with revers-ible chisel points fitted to initially bust the clay pan, and laterfitting sweeps to smooth the ground over. Planting on 15mmrainfall in early October resulted in a near perfect strike ofdouble skip row sorghum.

Andrew sums up the effectiveness of his Gyral by saying “Ifyou can get the seed down into moisture, you just know it’ll getout of the ground.”
