    everyoneknowswhatthismeans.Gardeningseasonishereagainandmostpeoplewillspendalotoftimedo-ingyardwork(likerakingupthoseleavesleftoverfromlastFall),preparingthegar-denbedsforplantingandstartageneralclean-uparoundthe

    house.Aswell,thehandymantypeactivitiesarealsoscheduledtobedone,suchaspaintingfences,pushinglawnmowers,trimmingthehedgeandweedingthegarden.

    Theseactivitiescantaketheirtollonyourback.ChiropractorstreatmanygardeningenthusiastsandhandytypepeoplewhoinjurethemselveseverySpring.Manyofyoumayreadthisandthinkbeenthere,donethat!

    Itisimportant,thatyoudonottakeontoomuch,toosoon.Besuretoorganizeyourdayandlistthetaskswhichyouwouldliketoac-complish.Hint:Figureouthowmuchtimeyouthinkitwilltaketodothesetasksthendoubleit.Youwillndthatthelargertimeframeislikelymoreaccurate.

    Startoffwithsomeofthesmallerandlessphysicallydemandingjobsaroundthe

    houseandyard.Youmaynditbettertostartaneasytnessprogram;perhapsevenstarttakingabriskwalkeveryday.Besuretoimproveyourphysicalconditionbeforeyoutakeontoomucharoundthehouseandgarden.Gentlestretchingexercisesbefore,duringandafterphysicallydemandingwork,arerecommended.

    Besurenottoremainbentoverorstoopedfortoolong.Thisfatiguesthemusclesinyourbackandcancausebackpainorpre-disposeyoutoaninjury.Thisisapositionthatyourbackisnotusedtoanditwilltellyouso.Afterbeing

    bentforwardforalongperiodoftimebesuretostandupstraightandarchbackwardstoeasethestrainonyourback.Beingbentoverforalongperiodoftimeisverysimilartoholdingyourarmouttothesideforanequallylongtime.Asyouallknow,your

    shouldermuscleswillgettired,andyouwilllikelyexperiencesomepainordiscomfortinthemuscle.Thatisasignthatthemuscleisfatigued.

    Whenyouareoutside,besuretowearproperclothing.Dontoverdressorunder-dressfortheweather.Itisgenerallybesttodressinlayers.Itisalsoimportanttowearproperfootwear. Make sure your feet staydry(especiallyinthemuddygardenintheearlySpring)andalsomakesurethattheoldshoes(whichmostofususeinthegarden)doprovidepropersupport.Hint:Keepanextrapairofdrysockshandy.

    Manyofthegardeningtoolsarenowmadewithlongerhandles,andtheycanbepurchasedwiththickerhandlescoveredwithfoam.Hint:Ifyouhaveashovelorgardeningtoolwhichisstillingoodshape,butduetoarthritisyoundithardtogrip,justbuysometubularfoamwhichisusedasinsulationaroundwaterpipes.Thiscanbetapedontoyourgardentoolsandshouldmakegrippingmucheasier.

    Whenyouareweedingthegarden,itisbesttobedownonallfoursorkneel,usingonekneeatatimeandchangingpositionsfrequently.Kneepads,oranoldpieceoffoamwillhelptoreducethepressureonyourknees.

    Whenliftingorshoveling,besuretouseyourlegstotakethestrain;donotstrainyour

    back!Switchhandsfrequentlywhenyouareraking,hoeingorshoveling.Thishelpstoreducethestrainononesideofthebody.

    Earlyinthegardeningseason,itisnotuncommonforpeopletoexperiencejointormusclesoreness.Restthearea(donttrytocompleteallthetaskswhichyouhadsched-uledfortheday)andrelaxwithanicepack.Icepacksplacedonthearea(withacloth

    ontopoftheskin)for15-20minutescoupleofhours)isoftenquitebeneci

    Dietarysupplementsincludingshoil,multivitamins,calciumandvitaminDarein-

    creasinginpopularity.Somepeopletakethesesupple-mentsattheirdoctorssug-gestion,othersatapharma-cistssuggestion,othersreadan advertisementand somepeople take supplementsattheir friends suggestion.CoenzymeQ(CoQ10)ranks

    inthetop5ofdietarysupplementsanditsuseisrapidlygrowing.

    Briey,CoQ10isessentialforlifebecauseithelps cellsto use oxygentogeneratetheenergyneededforlifefunctions.

    CoQ10ismostlyfoundinmitochondira,asmallorganellethatexistswithinmostofourcells.Youcanimaginethatmitochondria,ttingwithineachcellareverysmall,andtheamountofCoQ10withinthemitochondriaisconsequentlysmall.Liver,kidneyandheartaretheorgansinourbodiesthatuselotsofen-ergy,soitisnotsurprisingthatCoQ10isfoundinhigherconcentrationsintheseorgans.

    Somepeople,believethatanythingthathelpsyoutomakeenergywillhelpyoutofeelandbehaveinamoreenergeticway.TheybelievethattakingCoQ10willhelpthemfeelandbehaveinamoreenergeticway.Weknowhoweverthatitisoftendifculttopredicthowsubstanceswillinuenceyourhealth,evenwhenweknowhowtheymightwork.DoesCoQ10helppeople?Ifsowho?

    Benefts and Harms o CoQ10Rare Mitochondrial Disease: CoQ10

    helpssomepeople,withraremitochondrialdiseases.Theseconditionsaresouncommonthatmostfamilydoctorswillnotseeacaseinalifetimeofpractice,andthefrequencyoftheseconditionsisnotsufenttoaccountforthewidespreaduseofCoQ10supplements.

    Heart Disease: Heart ailureoccurswhentheheartisnotabletopumpbloodef-fectively,leadingtoswellinginthelegsandshortnessofbreath,partlyfrombloodpoolinganddecreasedcirculation.Thereissuggestive,butnotdeniteevidencethatCoQ10mightbehelpfultosomeheartfailurepatients,thestudieshavenotbeensufcientlystrongtosupportadenitiveanswer

    CoQ10mightreducehighbloodpressure,unfortunatelythestudiessupportingthisposi-tionarenotconclusivebecauseofthesmallnumberofpatientswhohavebeenfollowed.

    Cholesterol and cholesterol loweringdrugs:Drugsthatimpairtheproductionofcholesterol(statinsarethemainexample)alsoimpairthebodysabilitytogenerateCoQ10andlevelsofCoQ10arelowerinpeopletakingstatins.Patientstakingstatinsmaygetmusclecramps,andtakingCoQ10asasupplementleadstoadecreaseinthemusclecrampsthatsomepeopleexperienceoncholesterolloweringdrugsandthisseemstobethebestunderstooduseofthesupplement.

    Researchershaveproducedsuggestive,butnotconclusiveevidencethethesupplementmighthelppeoplewithhighbloodpressureassociatedwithdiabetes.Patientswithsometypesofgumdisease,havelowlevelsofCoQ10andthereisasuggestionthatthecom-

    poundmightfacilitategumrepairbuttherearenoconclusivestudies.CoQbeendiscussedasaremedyforawidevofotherconditions,buttherearefewtionswith conclusiveevidence that boutweighsharms.

    Side Eects:Itishardlysurprisiadrugthatinterfereswithenergyprodcouldproduceinsomniaorfatigue,anofthesesideeffectshavebeenreporte

    Otheradversereactionsincludeskintions,dizzyness,nausea,andabdominheadachesandheartburn.

    GenerallythesupplementCoQthoughttobebenignandnotusuallyful.

    However, aswithotherdietary smentsCoQ10canandwillreactwithdrugsinavarietyofpredictableandunpableways.InteractionsincludeinterfewiththebodiesresponsetobloodthinYoushouldtellyourdoctorifyouarethis or otherdietary supplements bedietarysupplements,aswellasconvenmedications,mayinuencepeopleinudictableways.

    Clearly,wehavelotstolearn.PemoreprojectsmustbedonetofollowtofpeopletakingCoQ10(andotherdrugwhenwasthelasttimeyourpharmacistyoutoaskhowyouweredoingonthesupplementtheysoldtoyou?

    Thecontinuingcaresectorrepresentsasignicantandintegralpartofourhealthsys-tem.Continuingcareprogramsandservicesareofferedoutsideofthehospitalsetting,eitheron along-termor short-termbasis.Thiscanbeinthehomeoraresidential-basedfacility.Whatmaynotbecommonlyknown

    isthatcontinuingcareprovidersarealsoac-tiveinthecommunity,helpingpeopletolivetheirlivestothefullestintheplacethattheycancallhome.

    Manycontinuingcareorganizations,suchashomecareagenciesandnursinghomes,offerarangeofprogramsintheirlocalcom-munities.Forexample,NorthwoodinHalifax,offersTelecare.ThisisafreedailycalltoseniorslivingaloneintheHalifaxRegionalMunicipality.NorthwoodalsoprovidesAdultDayprograms. The programsoffer asafe,therapeuticdaytimeenvironmentfor depen-dentadultsovertheageof50withadiagnosisof: AlzheimerDisease, dementia, stroke,

    ParkinsonDiseaseorwhomaybephysicallyfrail.WithlocationsthroughouttheHalifaxRegionalMunicipality,theAdultDayprogramoffers caregiversa daytimebreak from thedailystressesofcaregiving.

    SeniorHomeCheck,andAssistedTransporta-tion.ThedollarsraisedwillalsohelpVONCanadaprovidecommunity servicesacrossthecountry,includingadultdayprogramsforpeoplewithfrailtiesorcognitiveimpairment,transportationprograms,homecareprogramsforhome-boundadults,andmanymoreser-vicesthatallowpeopletoliveindependentlyintheirownhomesandcommunities.

    Inadditiontoofferingoutreachprogramsandraisingfundstosupportcharitablepro-gramdelivery,anumberofcontinuingcareorganizationsandtheclientstheyservearealsoactiveparticipantsintheirlocalcommu-nities.Therearemanystoriesaboutnursing

    homeresidentsgivingbacktotheircommunityfromsewingChristmasquiltsfordonationtotheIWKto taking partin theAlzheimerMemoryWalk.Someresidentsremaincon-nectedwiththeircommunitiesandthepeopletheyhaveknownforyearsbycontinuingtotakepartinneighbourhoodevents.Forex-ample,theresidentsandstaffatOceanViewManorinEasternPassage,NovaScotia,areinvolvedin someof the events heldduringtheannualEasternPassageSummerCarnival,includingtheparade.OceanViewManor

    entersaoatandthefacilityisdirectlyparaderoute.Residentsgatherinthegareaoftheproperty,watchingmarchingclowns,baseballteams,aswellasmembusinessandcommunitygroupspassbywiththebeautiful,scenicAtlanticOcthebackdrop.

    So,clearly,continuingcareorganiareanimportantpartofNovaScotian

    MayisSpeechandHearingAwarenessmonth.Whenwasthelasttimeyouhadyourhearingchecked?AccordingtoStatisticsCanada1in10Canadianshasahearinglossand50%ofCanadiansovertheageof65havesomedegreeofpermanenthearingloss.

    Unfortunately,hearinglossoccursgradu-allyandoftengoesunnoticed.Mostpeoplewaitanaverageofsevenyearsaftertheonsetofhearinglossbeforeseekingtreatment.Dur-ingthistimecommunicationcanbecomeverydifcultandfrustrating.

    Theconsequences ofuntreatedhearinglossareserious.Mostofusareawarethat

    hearinglosscancauseseverecommunicationdifculties.However,hearinglossalsohasaprofoundimpactonqualityoflife.Hearinglosscanleadtoisolationaspeoplewithdrawfromsocialinteractionswithfamilyandfriends.Overtimesuchisolationcanleadtostrainedrelationships,anxiety,anddepression.

    toyourheart.Whenwewalk,thecontractionandrelaxationof thecalfmusclehelpstheveinsmovetheblooduptheleg.Thereareone-wayvalvesintheveinsthatonlyallowthebloodtoowinonedirection.Whenthevalvesintheveinsarenotworkingproperlybloodisabletoowintheoppositedirectionwhichincreasesthepressuresintheveinsandcausesspiderveinsorvaricoseveins.Notonly

    maythesebeanissuecosmeticallytheymayalsobethecauseofyourtired,heavy,achinglegs.

    thelungs.ADVTcanalsodamagethevalvesinthedeepveinswhichcanleadstohighpres-suresandresultinvaricoseveins.

    TheRover,aprivateeroutofLiverpool,NovaScotia,sailedintothepagesofmaritime

    historywhen she defeatedfourSpanishgunboatsafteraercegunneryduelatseaagainstoverwhelmingoddsduringtheNapoleonicWar.

    ABrigof100tons,theRoverwasbuiltinLiverpoolbySnowParkerandlaunchedinAprilof1800,shecarried

    16fourpoundersandhadacrewof60men.ShewasownedbyaconsortiumofLiverpoolbusinessmenheadedupbySimeonPerkins.

    HerrstskipperwasCaptainAlexanderGodfrey,whowasborninChatham,Massa-chusetts,in1756,andmovedtoNovaScotiain1791.Oversixfeetinheight,CaptainGodfreywasdescribedashavingaquietdemeanor,andamodestretiringdisposition.

    TheRoverreceivedherLetterofMarque,permissionbythegovernmenttoraidenemy

    shipping,onMay20,1800,andthefollowingmonthshesailedoutofLiverpoolharbour

    toraidSpanishandFrenchshippingontheSpanishMain.

    DuringJuly,Godfreyandhiscrewat-tackedaFrenchconvoyofsevenships,cap-turedthree,anddroveofftheremainingfour.Hereturnedtoportbrieywithhisprizes,thensailedagainonJuly16.

    OnSeptember9, whilecruisingoffthecoastofVenezuelahuntingforenemymer-

    chantsships,aSpanishtradingschoonerwassentoutasadecoyandtheRoverwentafterher.TheSpaniardsrantheshipagroundandranintothenearbywoods.TheRoverlaunchedaboattocheckforusablecargobutndingthehulkemptytheysetthevesselonre.

    Thenextday,theSpanishschooner SantaRitaandthreearmedgalleyssailedoutofPuertoCabelloHarbourtoattackandendtheprivateeringwaysoftheRover.

    TheSanta Ritahadacrewof125seamenandmarineswith10sixpounders

    andtwocannonades.Eachgalleycarriedasinglesixpoundermountedinthebowand

    wasmannedby25marinesandacrewofblackslavestopulltheoars.

    TheRoverengagedtheSpanishegunbattlethatlastedalittleoverthreeAsthetwomainboatscametogether,CGodfreywithswordinhandleapedonSpanishschoonerwithsomeofhiscrefollowingclosebehind.TheyranaloschoonersdeckshoutingwhiletheSpathrewdowntheirweaponsand struccolours,theseabattlewasover.

    ThethreegalleysregroupedandtumovetowardstheRoverbutwhentheringcrewonboardtheprivateerredhepounders,thegalleysturnedawayandhfortheirhomeport.

    TheothermorningImadearuckustryingtogetmychronicallylateteenagerupintimeforschool.ShepleadedforjustanothertenminutesbutIyelled,screamedandthreatenedwaterboardinguntilIgotherupandintothebathroom.ButwhenshehadntsurfacedahalfhourlaterIpeekedintondhercurledupon

    theooroftheshower,sleeping,orpretend-ingtosleep.Shewasgoingtogetthoseextratenminutesonewayoranother.Mydaughterwastreatingmetoatasteofpassiveaggressivebehavior;bettersaid,shewastreatinghersel,becausepassiveaggressionisnotonlyoneofthemostunderratedtoolsinourarsenal,itsalsooneofthemostsatisfying.(Moreaboutthatlater.)

    Forthoseofyouwhoarenotregularusers,passiveaggressioncanbestbedescribedasastatementoractthatappearsonthesurfacetobeinnocentorevensweet,butisactuallymotivatedbyhostility,containingahiddenbarbofsomesortasugar-coatedpillwith

    areallybadaftertaste.Thiscompliment,forexample,fromaslimwomantoaheavyone:Howbraveofyoutowearleggings!Itsthekindofbehaviourthatcharacterizestheso-calledmeangirls.

    So,meangirls,meanwomen,howdidwegettobethatway?Afterall,evolution-arypsychologiststelluswereprogrammedtobepleasers.Whenthecavemenwentofftohunt,thewomenstayedbehindtocareforthekids,bondingtogetherinthefaceofdangerandndingsafetyinnumbers.Theyhadlittlechoiceawomaneeingfromasaber-toothtigerwithaninfanthangingfromherbreastandatoddlerintowwasnotlikelytoachieveapersonalbestforthe400meterrun.

    Exclusionfromtheprotectionoftheclanposedanexistentialthreatyoucouldstarveorbeeatenbypredatorssothecavewomenlearnedto getalong, spritzing each otherwithoxytocinandbecomingBFFs.Andtheylearnedtoexpressangerinsafe,subtleways.Sincetheoutrightexpressionofhostilitywasdangerous,passive aggressionwasborn tollthegapbetweenmutecomplianceandrebellion.

    Myfamilyrecentlypresentedmewithyetanotherexcellentexampleofpassiveaggres-sion.(Apparentlyweareverygoodatthis.)Mymotherhadjustlearnedthatshehadbeen

    excuded fromthebirthdaypartyof Joan,amemberofhersocialcircle.Truthbetold,shewasnotoverlyfondofJoanand,infact,ratherdislikedher.Nonetheless,shefeltsnubbed.Iwaswithmymomwhensherstheardaboutthisandasshemulledoverthesituation.Afterawhilesheannounced:IthinkIllgetheranicepresent.

    Onthesurfacethiswouldappeartobe

    agenerousimpulse.However,knowingmymother,thiswasnotaselessgesturebutthestrokeofamastermanipulator.Shecouldhaveoptedfordirect,honestconfrontation,butthatwouldhavebeenpotentiallydisruptivetothebalanceofrelationships.Equallyimportant,itwouldhaveallbeenovertoosoon.

    WoodyAllenoncedescribedadebateheandhiswifehadaboutwhethertousetheirsavingstotakeanicevacationortogetadi-vorce.Theyoptedforthedivorce,reasoningthatavacationisoverinaweek,butadivorceissomethingyoullalwayshave.Openag-gressionislikeanicevacationmomentarilysatisfyingbutthen,youknow,itsoverandyoureleftwithaheftybill.Butthepleasuresofpassiveaggressiongoonandon.

    Toillustrate,thescenariobetweenmymotherandJoanmightplayoutlikethis:Mymotherwouldpretendnottoknowaboutthepartyandsenda thoughtfulgift. First,shewouldenjoyimaginingJoansdiscomfortuponreceivingthepresent.Then,Joanwouldcall

    andthankher,feelingobligedtoexteinvitetotheparty,therebyallowingmthefurtherjoyofturningherdownwithsweetinsincerityshecouldmuster.Ortmightthicken.JoancouldsendathanotebutfailtoproffertheexpectedinviThenmymotherwouldhavetowonderJoanontoherandretaliatinginkind,shetherarewomanthatwassimplyimm

    Morethan70yearslater,Prowserecallsthatherinterestinpoliticsbeganatanearlyagebecause,Iwasbroughtupinafamilykeenlyawareof,thoughnotactiveinpoliti-

    callife.Shereadilyacknowledgesthatshenever

    dreamedsomedayinthefuture,politicalandsocialissuesinanothercountrywouldplayaveryimportantroleinherlife.

    WhenshegraduatedfromhighschooltheSecondWorldWarwasstilldevastatingBritainandlikehercountrymen,shewascopingwithairraidsandbombsheltersandmanyterriblecircumstances.Onewartimeexperiencethatremainsmostvividforheris,ThenightwelostourfamilyhomeandwerebombedoutagainthenextnightwhileIwasstayingatafriendshouse.Shechucklesalittlewhensheadds,Buttherewerenotearswejust

    hadacupoftea!!Prowsedisclosesthattheyearsthatfol-

    lowedwerefarlessmemorable.IworkedforashorttimeasatelephoneoperatorandalsoatPlymouthsTreasuryofce.

    Butitwasin1948,whenshemarriedherhusbandGerrythatherlifebegantoundergoamajortransition.Hewasaboatandyachtbuilder and initiallywehad decided toim-migratetoNewZealand.Whenthisdidnthappen,wemadethedecisiontomovetoNovaScotiawherehisskillswereindemand.OurrstchildDavidwasonlythreeandahalfwhen,in1953,thetwoofusjoinedmyhus-bandwhowasalreadylivinginHalifax.Two

    yearslater,oursecondsonChriscompletedourfamily!

    Sheadmits,inCanadainthelateearly1960sshewasnotcommittedtoanypoliti-calpartybutshoppedarounduntilIfoundtheonethatattractedme.ItwastheNewDemocraticParty.

    TheyearsthatfollowedhadahugeimpactonProwsesdailylife.Almostovernight,she

    foundherselfplayingasignicantroleinthepartysdemandingagenda.Thisincludedagreeingtoallowthepartytosetupanofceinherbasement,becominga provincialsec-retaryandin1963makinghistorybybeingtherstwomaninNovaScotiatobecomeanNDPcandidatein aprovincialelection.Prowsewasdefeatedthatyear,andagainin1967.Amazingly,despitethepartysstruggletoserveintheprovinciallegislature,sheneverallowedthisfrustratingdilemmatodiscourageherfromparticipatinginitsdeterminationtosomedaywinseats.

    Today,Prowseremainsaverymodestwomanwhoisclearlyreluctanttoaccepttheaccolades shedeserves. Fewwill disagreethatshehasrepresentedanexceptionalrolemodelforCanadianwomen.SheisonlythesecondwomantobeelectedasaNationalVicePresidentofthefederalNDP.AlsoshewasappointedamembertotheNDPswomencouncilandfrequentlydemonstratingthatshewasdeterminedtomakeherpartymoreresponsivetoitswomenmembers.

    In1971,Chatelainemagazinefeatureda

    proleofProwseinanarticle,whichincludedheramongitslistof105potentialwomanMPs.Itnotedthatshewascurrentlyservinghersec-ondtwo-yeartermasanationalvice-presentoftheNDP,andthatforthreeyearsshehadbeenthechairmanoftheboardofdirectorsattheConsumersCo-op.Itpraisedherspecialinterests,whichincludedtheconstructionofbetterhousingforCanadiansandeliminatingpoverty.

    Whatthearticledidnotincludewasthein-

    formationthatProwsehadbeenanextrpopular keynotespeaker at conferacrossCanadahostedbytheco-opemovement.ItalsodidntdisclosethatsheldthepositionofSecond-VicePresidCo-opAtlantic,beenamemberoftheCCommitteeoftheInternationalCo-Ope

    AllianceandsecondVicePresidentoCo-operativeUnionofCanada.

    AbiographyaboutPeggyProwsealsorevealthatformorethan20years,writtenbyhertoeditorswereoftenpubinanumberofnewspapers.Inherarticorrespondence,shechampioned coucauses includingdeploringhousingctionsthatshedescribedasbeingappaandadisgrace.Shealsoexpressedismayaboutwagesthatprovidedlittlethanbareexistence.And,in1971,onelettersspokeofherbeliefthatparamnursepractitioners,betterhomecarcommunityclinicsshouldbeplayinga

    importantroleinourhealthcaresystemofherlettersremainamosttangiblemonyofhertrulyhighprinciples.

    In2011,asProwsenownearsthehereighties,shereactsratherphilosophwhenonetellshersheshouldbeveryofherextraordinarylife.Sheis,howreluctanttoacceptthesuggestionthanowtimeforhertobeofciallyhonThosewhoknowandrespectherwiyoucategorically,thisislongoverduecolleagues,herfriendsandherproudfwouldalsobemorethanpleasedtoasseshedeservestobehonoured,notonlyfoingmadeourcountrymuchmorerespo

    towomensequalityissues,butalsofoferventcommitmenttoimprovingthebeingofherfellowCanadians.

    Withoutquestions,thelateToDouglas,whowasabelovedmentoroandwhoforanumberofyearsoftenwcollaborativelywithher,werehestillwouldbethemostappropriatepersontoProwsepraises.Nodoubt,hewouldemphaticallythatshehasbeen,incouways,amongCanadasmostunderapatedsocialactivist.

    WhatalsoneedstobehighlightedthisneNovaScotianwomanisthemobservationthatshehasalwaysbeena

    fuladherenttotheinspiringidealofCage,myfriendsitsnottoolatetobbetterworld.

    This,indeed,iswhatPeggyProwsalwaysstrivedfor!

    Acadian RaconteurWar Hero Joe Maloneyhas a passion to educatethe public on the Partisanmovement

    IntheDecember/JanuaryissuewehadafeatureonMajorWilliamJonesandhowheandthePartisanMove-menthadhelpedtorescuesomedownedairmenwhohadtobailoutoverGerman-occupiedYugoslavia duringWorldWarTwo.OneoftheairmenwasJoeMaloney,87years,wholivesinYarmouthN.S.Originallyhewasfrom

    theUnitedStatesandhadjoinedtheU.S.Armyin1943,andwouldlaterbecomeattachedtothe15thAirForce,basedinItaly.

    In1944,MaloneysbigB-24BomberhadbeenshotandtheentirecrewhadtobailoutoverSlovenia,Yugoslavia.TailgunnerMaloneyandhisfellowairmenreunitedonthegroundandweresoonwiththePartisans,who,withoutadoubtsavedtheirlives.ThePartisanswalkedthem,sometimesrunningfortheirlives,throughSlovenia,Croatia,andBosniatoPetrovacnearthecoastwheretheywereownbyaC-47,aGooneyBirdtoBari,Italy,andsafety.

    JoeMaloneywasthemostgratefulmanonearthafterthisrescueandhasmadeithislifespassiontoeducatethepubliconMajorWilliamJonesandthePartisanmovement.

    AfterthewarourheroreturnedtoCon-necticutandmarriedhiswife,FloraAnn,onApril7,1947,(incidentally,thesamedaythatindustrialistHenryForddied).Joewentbacktoworkandlater,verysuccessfully,established hisown contracting company,eventuallyretiringasa licensed real estatebrokerandappraiser.

    AfterretirementtheMaloneysmovedtoYarmouth,N.S.wherethepacewasslowerandquieter.Thismovewouldchangetheirlivesforever;nallyJoewouldlearntherestofthestoryonwhathadtranspiredaftertheyhadbailedoutovertheBalkans.Untilthen,andforforty-sixyears,heonlyknewhehadbeenshotdownoverYugoslavia.TheParti-sanshadwarnedthemnottoknowanyoneor

    anyoftheplacestheypassedthrough;incaseofcapture,theGermanswouldhavetorturedthemandforcedoutinformationbeforeelimi-natingthem.

    In1990,ataSt.PatricksDaypartyatthehomeofDr.ShelaghLeaheyinYarmouth,JoeMaloneymetAnaBrodarec,fromZagreb,Croatia,whowasvisitingherson,Ivo,alocaldoctor.DuringthewarAnahadbeenanine-teen-yearoldmemberofthePartisans.What

    acoincidence,JoeandAnacomparednotes,andJoepickedhismemoryoftheterrifyingexperience,thevillages,mountains,placeshehadseenalmosthalfacenturyearlier.BitbybittheyputthepiecestogetherandthroughMrs.Brodarec,withherconnectionsfromCroatia,Joewouldbeabletotellhiswarstoryasithadhappened.OnesurpriseforMaloneywasthatMajorJones,hishero,wasfromBear

    River,DigbyCounty.

    AnareturnedhomeandcontactedMr.EdiSelhaus,formerPartisan,authorandphotogra-pherlivinginSlovenija.InoneofhisbooksonUnitedStatesairmensavedbythePartisans;theyfoundthenameJoeMaloney.BackinYarmouthN.S.JoehadmetRayZinck,veteranawardwinningjournalistandpartownerofradiostationCJLS.Mr.Zinckwas

    verymuch interested inwritingon thtimesurvivalandescapeexperiencesMaloney.Whenthebookwaspublis1998,thetitlewasTheFinalFlightogiesDrawers,thenameofMaloneyLiberatorthatcrashedoverCroatiaWorldWarTwo.

    Whileresearchingforthisbook,wImhappytohaveinmylibraryasagif

    RayZinckandwouldrecommendtoatheauthoraccompaniedJoeandFlorMaloneyonaighttoSlovenijaandamwithSelhausandanotherauthorwhowPartisanactivities.WiththehelpofhifriendsJoewasabletoreturntoPodgrretracehisstepsofwhereithadallJoewasabitembarrassed,atrst,wrecognizedverylittlewhileaciviclunwasheldinhishonor.

    Soon,however,Joerecognizedtheandtherectorynextdoorandtheoldwthesideoftheroadwherehehadstayrstnight.ThepeopleofPodgradbasthewarmthoftheirfriendJoe,therstd

    airmanevertoreturnthere.Theyshhimwheretheplanehadcrashed,verremainedbuthewasgivenapistonvalvtheplaneasasouvenir.

    peoplelookingfor,andndingbargainsandsuperdealseverytimetheyboughtanaban-donedstorageunit,orpickedaprospectsomewhereinthatlandofopportunity-theUSofA.Weareabouttondoutifsuchop-portunitiesexistnorthoftheborderforus,hereinCanada.

    Ihavedonemanythingsinmylifewhichwerenotwhatgoodbehaviourdemands,

    butfew,ifany,IfeelImustapologizefor.

    Somethings,startingbackwhenIwasveryyoung,thatwerestrictlyagainsttherulesofgoodconduct,Ilookbackonnowwithgreatsat-isfactionandalittledelightknowingthatIhad,atthe

    time,thecouragetogoagainstconvention.Formanyofmytransgressions,ifyouwanttocallthemthat,ledtosuccessesinmylifethatIrecallnowwithhappinessandabsolutelynoregret.

    TherstexamplegoesbacktowhenIwasonlythree.MyfatherwasanavidcigarsmokerandhesmokedonlythebestCubancigars.ThearomaofthesecigarssofascinatedandattractedmethatonedayItookoneofthecigarsandaboxofmatchestothecellarunderourhomeatNo.1PrincessRoad,Chinley,inDerbyshire,England,tondoutwhymyfather

    alwayslookedsocontentwhensmoking.Ihadonlyjustbeguntondoutwhenmyfatherappearedbehindme.Hewasntmad,simplytoldmethatImustsmokethecigaruntiltherewasnomoreashtofalloff.

    LongbeforethatmomentarrivedIwasviolentlysick.Ifeltasthoughtheendoftheworldwasabouttohappen.Itwasthen-estthingmyfathereverdidforme.Fromthatdaytothisthethought

    ofsmokingsickensme.Perhapsallfa-thersshouldmaketheiryoungstersdoasIdidthatdayandwewouldstampoutsmokingforever.

    WhenIwasonlyfourIdecidedthathav-ingtostayhomewhilemysister,Pat,thenseven,wasabletoat-tendChinleyCouncilSchool,wasveryun-fair,soIwasonmyway,unofficially,totheschool,aboutamileawayfrommyhome,walkingdownthemid-dleoftheroadwhenIwashitbyacar.

    Iwasntreallyhurt,rathermoreannoyedthatmydeterminationtoattendschoolhadbeenthwartedbytheratherlargedignied-looking gentlemanwithabeardwhowasapassengerinthecar.Itwasthisgentlemanwhopickedmeup,putmeinthecarandin-structedhischauffeurtotakemetotheaddressIgaveasmyhome.

    Thebeardedgentlemanwhounexpect-edlyseemedtobetreatedbymymotherwithmorethanrespectthanmeasthevictim,satbymybeduntilthelocaldoctorarrivedandpronouncedmeuninjured.ItwasntuntillaterthatdaythatIdiscoveredmyrescuerwasnoneotherthanKingGeorgetheFifth.ThathewasinChinleyvisiting,unofcially,thegorgeousyoungwidow,LadyPorter,ourmostfamousresident,Ihadnoideaatthetimebecauseatfour,suchthingswerenotinmybookofthoughts.

    WhenIwasinchargeofpublicityforJackKentCookesRadioCKEYinTorontoin1958,avisitorarrivedinmyofce.Heaskedmetoplaya45RPMdischehadmade.Hehoped,ifIlikeditIcouldpersuadethesta-tiontoplayit.IlovedtherecordbutcouldntconvinceDonInsley,ourprogramdirector,oranyoneelsetogiveitjustoneairing.SoIdidwhatoneisneversupposedtodo.IwentovertheheadofeveryonebycallingJackCookeathisTorontoofceatLibertymagazine.IaskedhimtocometotheDonMillsstudioandlistentotherecord.ItoldhimIknewIshouldntbegoingovertheheadofhisbrotherHal,thestationmanager,butthatIbelievedintherecord.

    JackCookecametothestation,lovedtherecord,andnotonlyoverruledhisbrotherandeveryoneelsebydemandingtherecordbeplayed,butalsoconvincedQualityRecordstomakecopiesofthediscandtosignthesingertoacontract.

    HetoldmetogetHarold Jenkins,thesinger,tochangehisname,whichIdid,andasaresulttherecordbecameNo.1 rstatCKEYinToronto,thennationallyandtheninternationally.SoIhavenoregretsaboutrenamingthesinger,oringoingovertheheads

    ofeveryoneatthestation,becauseItsOnlyMakeBelievebyConwayTwitty,becamesuchamonsterworldwidehit.

    WhenConwayplayedinMonctonattheColiseumafewyearsagomydecisionwasfortiedwhenheannouncedfromthestagethathaditnotbeenformydeterminationtobreaktherulesingettinghiscareerstartedhemightneverhavebecomeastar.

    WhenIwasjustthirteenIwasatBuxtonCollege,havingwonascholarshipintendedforstudentsatleastseventeen.Sowhy,aftersuchagreatstart,doIthinkrunningawayonlyayearlatertojoinacircuswasnotabadblunder?

    WherewouldIhaveendedinlife?Idontknow,butleavinghome,hidinginthelionscagestoavoidbeingfound,andmeetingsomeofthegreatestpeopleIhaveeverknownincludingtheKingoftheRomanys,GypsyPetulengro,15-year-oldaerialistGinaGinotti,andanimaltrainerBillySmart,providedmewithalookatlifeIwouldneverhavefoundanywhereelse.

    Ihadnomoreeducationafter13.Thatis,ifyoucalleducationwhatyoulearninschools.WhatIlearnedinthecircuswastorespectpeople,loveanimals,andtowriteblurbsonanoldtypewriteraboutthewondersofthecircuswhichwesenttonewspapersineverytownaheadofourvisit. Itwasat thatmo-ment,whenIwasthirteen,Ibecameawriter!Runningawayabigmistake?Itstartedmyentirecareer.

    Butthegreatestnonoofmylifewas

    surelywhenIwasputinchargeofMarilynMonroeduringherrstvisittoLondontomakethelm,ThePrinceandtheShowgirl.ThememorablemorningwhenIarrivedatherrentedmansioninEngleeldGreentopickherupandtakehertothestudio,onlytondherstillasleepinbed,wasthemomentwhenImadeadecisionthatsurelyshouldnothavebeenmade.

    WhenthismajorstarrefusedtogetoutofbedIranthewaterinthebathtub,returnedtoherroom,yankedtheclothesback,andliftedher,wearingnothingbutChanelNo.5,intothebathroom,whereIdumpedherunceremoni-ouslyintothetub.

    Sheshouldhaveredme,butfromomentwebecamefriendsforlife.needsomeonetotellmewhatImusshesaid.

    playingguitarandasmanyboysdidatthattimeheranawaywithacircus.HewassoonbackhorneandattheyoungageoffourteenopenedabarbershopinButler.AtsixteenheleftagainwithabandfromHawaiicalledTheRoyalHawaiiansplayingbothsteelguitarand

    ukulele.Duringtherstworldwarhewasonethatisrareandvaluableishis1931recordofNightTimeInNevada.Durlate1920sJohnnywasmainlypopandFmainlycountrybutoccasionallythetogether.OnGetOutAndGetUndMoonbyNatShilkretsOrchestrathetheduet.FrankiewasoneofthersttocJimmieRodgerssongwhenherecordedYodel#IinJune1928.

    theircitywasfoundedin753beforetheChristian,orcom-mon,era.Reckoningbythatmethod,Halifaxin2011,ismarking262a.u.c.Inhumanhistorythatisnotverylong,althoughbythestandardsofEnglishCanadaweliveinavenerablecity.Thereisvery

    littleleftofourbuiltheritagethatdatesbackto1749/1752:St.PaulsChurch,probablytheOldDutchChurch,andjustpossiblypartofwhatwasformanyyearstheCarletonHotelonArgyleStreet.Itappearsthat,insimilarfashion,thedescendantsoftheoriginalHa-ligonianshavedisappearedlikewaterpouredintohotsandonasummerafternoon.

    Aseverygenealogistknows,manypeopleliketodrawattentiontothefactthattheyhadancestorsamongthefounders,therstsettlers,ofcommunities.MakeevenapassingvisittotheHectorCentreinPictouandyourealizethatitisamatterofpridetobeabletonameaforebearwhocrossedintheHectorin1773.NorthAmericanswhocanclaimanancestoramongthepassengersoftheMayowerin1620happilyacknowledgethefact.Somuchcachetattachestosuchthingsthatitsometimesseemsthatthosesmallshipscarriedmanythousandsofpeopleapiece.Therealityisthattherewerefewerthan300peopleinboththoseshipstogether.

    AndthenthereisHalifax,theoldestcom-munityinEnglish-speakingCanadawhichhasbeenatownfromitsfounding.Wherearethedescendantsofthose2,576pioneerHali-gonians?Havethesandsoftimeswallowedthemupwithoutatrace?

    PartoftheexplanationisburiedinthemyththatthepopulationofHalifaxwasde-pletedbyanepidemicintherstwinterof1749/50.Writingin1971,GeorgeTBatesputthelietothat.Hisarticlewasentitled

    TheGreatExodusof1749,or,theCornwallisSettlersWhoDidnt.Byusingeveryavail-ablecontemporarysource,Batesshowedthat,betweenthearrivalintheharbouron21June1749and8August1749,approximately50days,1,391peoplehadremainedinHalifax.Thatwasadropof1,185,or46%.Evenifafewdozenhaddiedandahundredsoldiersortwohadbeensentelsewhere,westillareleftwiththefactthattherewerenow1,391po-tentialfoundersofHalifaxfromwhomtherecouldbedescendants.Whatsmore,JunetoAugustisnotwinterasthemythclaimsasthetimewhenan epidemicthinnedouttheranksofrstsettlers.Peopledesertedinlargenumbers;simpleasthat.Measurestakenatthetimeshowthatthelocalauthoritieswereveryconcernedabouttheabscondingsettlers,recruitedandbroughthereatthetaxpayersexpense,andattemptedtostoptheexodus.

    ThepolltaxrollspreparedinHalifaxin1792,and1793,weretherstgenerallistsofheadsoffamiliesinthetowninfortyyears.Thestrikingthingaboutthepolltaxreturnsistherelativeabsenceofpeoplewiththesamesurnamesasthosewhocamein1749/1752,andwhowereofthesamefamilies.Somefamilies,suchastheMoreaus,bythenlivedinLunenburg,theSibleysinCornwallis,StaplesinOnslow,andWellnersinNewport.ThosewhoturnupinHalifaxwerefewindeed,andonceweomitthefamiliesthatdisappearedfromHalifaxinthegenerationortwoafter1793,thelistseemstoreducetothenamesCreighton,StevensandPiers.ThereweretheFordsandSlayterswhocametothenewtownwithinmonthsofitsfounding;theyhadbeenamongtheBritishgarrisonplacedinLouisbourgafteritsseizurein1745,andwhowereevacuatedwhenthefortresswasreturnednearlyfouryearslatertothosewhobuiltit.

    TheBritishgovernmenthiredtheScottishmerchant,JohnDickofRotterdam,torecruitsettlersincontinentalEurope.GermansandSwisswerefavouredinpartbecausetheHali-faxauthoritiesnoticedthatsuchpeopleweresteadyandindustrioussettlers.Mostofthose

    whobecameknownastheForeignPtantswenttobeginLunenburgin1753fewstayedinHalifaxorreturnedverysSomeveryoldHalifaxnamesgobacktoSwissandGermanswhoinhabitedHalthe1750sand60s:Artz,Bauer,BayerHurshman,Jost,Longard,Metzler,RuTriderandTurplearesomewhosefnamesarestillinthecity.Numbersoffromthefoundingyearshaddescendantwherewhomovedbackintothecityindecadesfromallovertheprovince.Mthe largerLunenburg families fallintcategorywhichisobviouswhenyoulodirectoryandcountalltheConrads,LanBoutiliers,Mosersandsoforth.

    SofarasIknowthereisnostigmaatttohavinganancestoramongtheresideHalifaxinitsfoundingyears1749-175theotherhand,thereisaresoundingsonthepartofanyonetoclaimsuchancSurelyamongthe900,000peopleoprovincetheremustbesomewhocantrancestorwholivedinthoserstfewyeHalifax.Itwouldbeinteresting,bothglogicallyandintermsoflearningwhewherepeoplemovedintheearlyyearsofScotia,tohearfromsomeoftheirprogeanyonereadingthiswhohasastoryto

    WhenIwasachildtherewasnomorewel-comesymbolofspringinNovaScotiathanthe

    robin.Itsbiologicalname,Turdus migratorius migrato-rius,registersitasamemberofthe songbird familythatfollowsregularmigration

    but,moreandmoreitseems,anumberofrobinsareseenthroughoutthewinter.TheAmericanrobiniscommoninthesummerandrarerin

    thewinterbut,becausetheyareconsideredahalf-hardyspecies,mostthatchoosetostayonforthewintersurvive.

    ForthemajorityofthosethatdogoasfarasMexicoforthewinter,theystarttoar-rivebackinNovaScotiainMarch.Perhapstheyknowsomethingaboutourweatherthattheyrekeepingsecret.InShelburneCounty

    thereisabeliefthatrobinsthatlingerlateinthefallareasignofamildwinter.But,alatespringsnowiscalledrobinssnowandissaidtobenatureswaytomoistentheearthandcausethewormstocometothesurfaceofthegroundandprovideearlyproteinforthenewarrivals.

    Robinsarebeautifulbirdsespeciallymalesbutbothsexessportthedistinctive

    brick-redbreastfeathers.Robinsnestsaresomeofthemostcommontobebroughtintotheclassroomandtheirlovelyazureeggshaveevenconjuredatoneonmanycolourcharts-robinseggblue.Butitisintheeldoffolklorethattheyaremostprominent.Fewbirdshavesomanyfolklorictalesaboutthem.Manytrytoexplainwhythisbirdacquireditsredbreast.

    OneofthevariantsofaMikmaqtaleoftheoriginoftherobinsredbreasttellshowrobinandsixotherbirdswerehuntinginthespringwhenabearwasleavingherden.Sev-eralofthebirdstriedtoshootthebearwiththeirarrowsbutonlyrobinwassuccessful.

    Beingtheonetomakethekill,robingotthersttasteofthemeatandwassoravenousafterthelongwinterthathedoveonthebearscarcassandbegantoeatitraw.Afterhisfeastrobinewtoanearbytreeandattemptedtoshakeoffthebloodspatteredonhisbody.Someofitewontotheleavesandthatiswhytheleavesturnbloodredinthefall.Robin

    wasabletoshakeoffalltheremainingexceptforthatonhischest.Thatexplairobingothisredbreast.

    AChristian-basedorigintaleisthrobinreceiveditsredbreastwhenittopullthethornsfromthebloodiedonChristsheadashehungonthecroScottishbeliefexplainsthateachdaythcarriesadropofwatertohelltoputo

    amesandsingesitsfeathersonthetheunderworld.Therearenumeroustalesofchildr

    inthewoodsandbeinghelpedbyrSadly,manyofthesetalesendwiththeoftheseLostBabesand,inmany,itrobinwhocoversthebodieswithleavewonderthenthatrobinshavebeenreverrespectedbymanycultures.

    AsachildinSherbrooke,IwastoldrobinslawthatitisillegaltokillrThisprobablyharkedbacktotheearlymtorybirdtreatysignedbetweentheUStatesandCanadain1916-1917.Wenothingofthis;forusitwouldhavebe

    lucktokillarobin.Perhapsitwasmancestrythatmadeusprotectrobins.Abeliefstatesthatifyoukillarobinthyouusewillbecomeuseless.

    inland,whichofferspectacularvistasateachturn.

    Westartedoffon theSouthShoreTrail,walkingalongclifftopsthatoverlookaseriesofsmallcovesandrockyislets,withaccesshereandtheretopebblybeachesbelow.Attheaptly-namedSeaLionPoint,wesawsealionsandharboursealsbaskingonthebeachandonlowrocksdottedthroughoutthecoves.TheSpanishnamedthepointforloslobosmarinos,orseawolves,astheycalledthesealions.Unfortunately,wedidntspotanyoftheelusiveseaottersthatfrequentthecoastsextensivebedsofgiantkelp.

    WenexttooktheCypressGroveTrail,probablythefavouriteofmostvisitorstothepark.Itwindsthroughoneofthelasttwostandsofnaturally-growingMontereyCypresstreesintheworld(theotherisnearCarmel).Infact,PointLoboswasoriginallyestablishedasareservetoprotectthesegnarledtrees.Theoutermosttreesclingtothecliffsides,surviv-ingwindandsaltspray,manyofthemcoveredwithvelvety,greenalgaethathasturnedor-angeduetothepresenceofcarotene.

    Weweregettinghungrybynow,andsinceClinthadntcomeouttomakeourday(inanycasethetownlookedtooexpensiveforourbudget)wedroveashortdistancetoMontereyforlunch.Thetownisnotedfortheabundanceanddiversityofitsmarinelife,manyofwhicharehousedintheMontereyBayAquarium,oneofthelargestonthecontinent.

    MontereywasimmortalizedbyauthorJohnSteinbeck,wholivednextdoorinPacicGroveforseveralyears.ThetownfeaturesinhisnovelsCanneryRow,TortillaFlatandEastofEden,aswellashisplay,OfMiceandMen.

    TodayFishermansWharfisapopulartouristattraction.Whereoncetonsofsardineswereshippedfromitdaily,itnowhousesgiftshops,seafoodrestaurants,artgalleries,tackleandbaitshopsandharbourcruiseconcessions.AlthoughImnormallyleeryofeatingintouristyareas,ourhostessandguideassuredusthatthefoodwasgoodhere.Shewasright;wehadanexcellentlatelunchatanicetableoverlookingthewaterbeforewereturnedtoSanJos.

    Wehadalreadydecidedthatthenextday,Sunday,wouldbeourSanFranciscoday,sowhenweawoketoheavy rainwewerenotdissuadedandoffwewenttothecitybythebay.Apparently,SanFranciscoisalovelyplace;Illhavetotakethewordofothersforthisasthedownpourcontinuedthroughoutourentiretimethere,accompaniedbythickfog.

    WedroveoverabridgethatwassignedastheGoldenGateBridge,butvisibilitywassolimitedwe could see neither thewaterbelownorthetopofthebridgetowersaboveus.Itwassowindyataviewingparkacrossthebridgethatitfeltasifwecouldbeblownawayatanyminuteaswetriedtosnapafewphotos.

    WerecrossedthebridgeandheadedfortheharbourfrontviaLombardStreet,bestknownforitsone-waysteepsection(downhill)whichboastseighthairpinturnsalongasinglecityblockandissometimescalledthecrookedeststreetintheworld.RainhadmadeLombardextremelyslick;thankgoodnessfor four-wheeldrive!

    TherestofourSanFranciscoexperienceconsistedofwalkingalongthatcitysFisher-mansWharfandtryingunsuccessfullytoseeAlcatrazthroughthefog.Later,wehadlunch

    atawaterfrontstaple,theBoudinSourdoughBakery&Cafe,wheretheirdeliciousclamchowderisservedinuniquesourdoughbreadbowls.

    WereturnedtoSanJosviathehugeandramblingcampusofStanfordUniversityatPaloAlto.SituatedabouthalfwaybetweenSanFranciscoandSanJose,theprivateuni-versityhasmorethan15,000studentsand,at8,200acres,isthesecondlargestanywhereintermsofcontiguousarea.StanfordisoneoftheworldstopuniversitiesandwasakeyplayerintheestablishmentofSiliconValley.

    Thenextday,asWillieNelsonsings,wewereontheroadagain,headingsouth.WerstdrovetoGilroy,proclaimedastheGarlicCapitaloftheWorld.ItsannualGarlicFesti-valfeaturesvariousgarlickyfoods,includinggarlicicecream.

    Unfortunately(!),weweretoolateforthefestival,butwedidstopattheGilroyOutletMall,hometo145stores.AlthoughImnotashopper,outletmallsintheUnitedStatesareabsolutelyamazingplacestondbargainsonbrandnamegoods.Asaresultofthatstop,wemadeseveralmembersofourimmediatefamilyveryhappyonChristmasDay.

    Tip o the Trip:WhentravelingUnitedStatesbycaritdenitelypaystaroundforgasoline,aspricescanvarygbetweenservicestations,eventhoseacrstreetfromeachother.
