Fall greetings to all of you! We certainly had a busy summer here at the COA,
lots of great trips and activities going on; our plans for October will keep the
fun rolling. Check out some of our programs coming up:
During the month of October we’ll celebrate Oktoberfest, a great German
tradition celebrated this time of the year. Our Dinner Night Out will be themed
around Oktoberfest, which should be a lot of fun, be sure to sign up for that
one! Keeping with the party theme, join us for the tailgate party in Sturgis and
Three Rivers; spend some time with friends and talk some football. We won’t
have beer but I guarantee the food will be great!
Our plans for the senior center and senior housing in Three Rivers are moving
along! In the next couple of months we will have a meeting to invite
community involvement in the planning of the site. I can tell from the number
of people stopping by my office that people are still very excited about the plan
and anxious to give input. Watch for postings at our senior centers, on our
website and in the newspaper. We want our senior citizens to be involved right
from the start!
Hope you all have a great October and find some time to join us at the COA!

5 Our Seniors Ham it Up at Murder Mystery Night
Sturgis Night Rescheduled for Wednesday, October 11
We had a ton of fun at our most recent Murder Mystery Night in Three Rivers which took place on Thursday, September 14. Our actors
pretended they were from a big, but not so happy Italian family that left us wondering who killed patriarch Pepi Roni. Was it his beloved
wife, Rosa, his daughter Angel, or perhaps, Father Alfredo? We were kept in suspense until the very end.
Guests enjoyed watching the show while dining on Baked Ziti, Italian Sausage and Peppers, Tossed Salad, Bread and Cannoli Poke Cake.
We had to reschedule the Murder Mystery Night in Sturgis and it is set for Wednesday, October 11 with the fun starting at 5 p.m.
If you would like to play a part (we still have an opening for one more actor), or you just want to come and have a good time, please call
and make a reservation by Monday, October 9.
A big thank you to our actors in Three Rivers! Pictured from left to right: Kay Ralston, Julie Linn, Babs Garrison, Alice Kielau, Laurel Cordes,
Rick Cordes, Kathy Rowe and Karen Schreiber-Perlberg. You all did a great job.

Community Partnerships
Make COA Project a Reality
After a group of adult services professionals
identified accessibility of housing as one of the
greatest needs for older adults in the County, the
COA and the Area Agency on Aging initiated a
program to build ramps for seniors. It’s been a
concern in the County for some time so the goal
was to try to pool together resources to assist
with this issue. There are other programs available
for people to build ramps, such as low interest
loans and some grants through the USDA; the COA
initiative is trying to help people that don’t qualify
for those programs. It took some time to gather
the resources and gather the necessary permits,
but on September 14, the COA and several community partners were able to build a ramp in the County for one of our
senior citizens. The St. Joseph County community really came together to make this happen, said COA Executive
Director Tim Stoll. Local contractor Steve Persing helped with getting permits; Tomlinson Lumber provided discounted
materials and volunteers from Messiah Lutheran and the Congregational Church in Constantine built the ramp.
“It was great to see how everyone contributed to help,” Stoll said. “The senior that got the ramp recently came home
from rehab and uses her wheelchair as her primary source of mobility. She doesn’t qualify for some of the other
programs that can assist with ramps and was very much in need of the accessibility. This ramp will vastly improve her
quality of life as she will be able to better access transportation and other supports that she needs outside the home.”
Stoll said he hopes they will be able to complete three ramps this building season and then continue to grow the
program in future years.
The Commission on Aging offers a Farm to Table meal each year as a way to celebrate the bounty our farmers provide to so many. Close to 500 meals were served August 25 to seniors throughout the county at our three meal sites in Sturgis, Three Rivers and Kline’s Resort. This number also includes the many seniors who receive meals delivered to their homes by our Meals on Wheels program. All of the food prepared that day was produced by St. Joseph County farmers.
The Commission on Aging could not provide this meal without the generous support of the following businesses and individuals. A big thank you to all of our donors this year:
Carls Farms II, Centreville
Corey Lake Orchards, Three Rivers
Byler’s Farm Markets, White Pigeon

SUMMER FUN AT THE COA
Social Security Express The COA is excited to partner with the Social Security Administration in
a new project called Social Security Express. This is a new service
delivery model that allows you to conduct Social Security business
online using our public access computers. Each computer contains a
shortcut on the desktop that allows you to access a variety of Social
Security online services in English or Spanish. An icon image for each
online service will automatically direct you to the appropriate Social
Security Internet page. We hope this provides you with a flexible, easy
and time-saving solution to conduct your Social Security business all in
one place.
In Sturgis the icon can be found on both computers in the Quiet Room.
In Three Rivers, we have installed the icon on a laptop that is available
for any senior to use. If interested, please ask Pat in Reception.
We Need Your Help! Did you know that the COA operates a program called Friendly
Reassurance? This is a wonderful service where volunteers
provide reassurance to seniors in their homes by calling to
check in, visiting occasionally or writing a letter to assure the
senior that he or she is being thought of.
There is not a huge time commitment when it comes to being
a Friendly Reassurance volunteer - all it requires is a few hours
each week and the impact you will have on someone’s life will
be so appreciated.
“This program is so vital to keeping our seniors independent
and in their homes for as long as possible,” said COA Nutrition
Manager Katie Hughes. “The goal is to reduce feelings of
isolation and it really helps recipients feel safer and more
connected to their community.”
Please consider being a Friendly Reassurance Volunteer. If you
are interested, please call the COA at 279-8083.
Creating Confident Caregivers An empowering, educational program for individuals
caring for a loved one with memory loss or dementia.
The program runs for six weeks and with a two-hour

loss can be arranged so you may attend all six sessions.
Classes begin Tuesday, October 24 and run through
November 28. The classes take place from 6pm - 8pm at the
Thurston Cares Adult Day Center located in the Sturgis
Enrichment Center, 306 N. Franks Avenue.
There is no cost to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

How is Medicare Funded?
Medicare covers roughly 55 million people age 65 and older, as well as folks with certain disabilities. You may have already known that though, but have you ever wondered how Medicare is funded?
Medicare operates through two trust funds which are held by the United States Treasury department. The sole purpose of these funds is to be used for Medicare. The first trust fund is the hospital insurance (HI) trust fund, also known as Medicare Part A. This trust fund is primarily funded through payroll taxes that you and your employer contribute to, as well as folks that are self-employed. As you earn wages, you and your employer will each be responsible for 1.45% for Medicare taxes. If you are fortunate enough to be self-employed, you will pay both the employee and employer portion for a total of 2.9%. It has been reported that the hospital insurance trust fund has collected $275 billion dollars in 2015 and had roughly a balance of $205 billion in 2015.
The second trust fund is called the Supplemental Medical Insurance Trust Fund(SMI). This trust fund helps finance two voluntary Medicare Programs. The first program is Medicare Part B, which helps covers doctors services and medical supplies. The second program is Medicare Part D, which is a newer program. The difference between the Hospital Insurance (HI) fund and the Supplemental Medical Insurance Trust Fund (SMI) is that (SMI) does not receive any payroll taxes. The primary funds that help support (SMI) fund come from individual taxes, corporate taxes, and excise tax as well as from premiums for Medicare Part B and Part D. Source: www.cms.gov
