THE SECURITY OF A PEDIATRIC PACIENT THROUGH THE MEANS OF HAND HYGIENE

Objective

Verify If the hygiene of hand realized before the procedure of the administration of medication

or fluids to the patient, by the nursing professionals follows the rules established by

the World Health Organization

Methodology

This is a quantitative exploratory type study wish

collection of data was implemented through the means

of observation, in a pediatric unit, of a University

Hospital in Florianópolis, Brazil, during the period of July

to August of 2010. Therefore, an instrument of

observation was elaborated based on the Guide to implementation – A Guide to the Implementation of WHO Multimodal Hand Hygiene Improvement Strategy (2009).

This instrument was applied in 150 procedures.

Methodology

The data obtained were placed in a table form and submitted to descriptive statistic analysis. The study

was realized in five stages. This study was approved by the ethics committee, protocol 388/08.

Results

Verify that many professionals did not realize the hygiene of hands before the procedure of administration of medication.

While those that wash their hands, many realize the technical in an inadequate way. Apart from this, we observe

also, that the institution offer material support and infrastructure minimum for the realization of this procedure.

Conclusions

The results shows the need for the capacity of professionals with washing of their hands, and adequate the unit as related to material and infrastructure for the

realization of this procedure, once that this action is constituted in one of the basics principle of quality health

assistance.
