Mother and Child Care

Good health is essential for leading a productive and fulfilling life and the right of

all women to control all aspects of their health, in particular; their own fertility is

basic for empowerment.

More than half of all child deaths are associated with

malnutrition, which weakens the body's resistance to illness. Poor

diet, frequent illness, and inadequate or inattentive care of young children can lead to

malnutrition.

If a woman is malnourished during pregnancy or if her child is under-nourished during the

first two years of life, the child's physical and mental growth and development may be

slowed. This cannot be treated when the child is older – it will affect the child for the rest of

his or her life. Children have the right to a caring, protective environment and to nutritious

food and basic health care to protect them from illness and promote growth and development.

Malnutrition in children is not affected by food intake alone; it is also influenced by access to

health services, quality of care for the child and pregnant mother as well as good hygiene

practices. Girls are more at risk of malnutrition than boys because of their lower social

status.

Malnutrition in early childhood has serious, long-term consequences because it impedes

motor, sensory, cognitive, social and emotional development. Malnourished children are less

likely to perform well in school and more likely to grow into malnourished adults, at greater

risk of disease and early death. Around one-third of all adult women are underweight.

Inadequate care of women and girls, especially during pregnancy, results in low-birth weight

babies. Nearly 30 per cent of all newborns have a low birth weight, making them vulnerable

to further malnutrition and disease.

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies also affect children’s

survival and development. Anemia affects 74 per cent of

children under the age of three, more than 90 per cent of

adolescent girls and 50 per cent of women. Iodine

deficiency, which reduces learning capacity by up to 13

per cent, is widespread because fewer than half of all

households use iodized salt. Vitamin A deficiency, which

causes blindness and increases morbidity and mortality among pre-school, also remains a

public-health problem.

In our society old aged people suffer the most. They are the most neglected person.

There are so many programmes for different section of the society but very few for the

old aged people. They who gave their best of time, effort, and sacrifice their life for the

family, but most of the time their own children throw them out of the house. There are

several cases. Poritranseva have a separate team to monitor and identify old aged

person in need and see that the get proper medicine, care and a small stipend to fulfill

their needs. This programme is in Baruipur, Kolyanpur, Basanti, and various parts of

Kolkata. We gave sari, Blanket and soap as a gift to 50 such persons.

Each month our organization provides pensions for 25 old aged people. This small

amount helps them to meet their requirements. This programme is running successfully

in Baruipur, Kolyanpur, Sonapur, Garia and other parts of Kolkata. We also take care

in

Family Welfare is a sustainable programme. Once a month all the family who suffer

different problems, like family dispute, in-laws problems, Drunkard husband, dowry,

torture on wife or on girl child and many different problems are dealt through

counseling. We have expert men and women counselors having experience more than

15 to 20 years and have successfully solved many family problems.

One of the participants witnessing about the peace established after attending the

programme. She had a family problem for many years. After joining the programme

and counseling session for few months, now there is peace in the family. At this old

age she is now very happy with her daughter-in laws and grand children.

She also gives thanks to the team of the caterer for preparing a tasty food for all the

participants.

The vice-president of the society gave thanks to all the volunteer for their effort and

hard work. Every month average 150 families take part in this programme. So yearly

1800 family are benefited from this programme. People come from different castes and

creed. They come from Baruipur, Kolyanpur, Krishnagar, Pakur, DumDum, Canning,

Basanti and different part of West Bengal.

Volunteers celebrate after the end of the programme .More such programmes are

requested by the different states so the number of beneficial will increase. Mrs. Aparna

Cardrick, president of the society among the participants encouraging the entire family

member to feel free and at home.

Lunch in the afternoon and refreshment in the evening served to every participant.

Food prepared by the Anthony Caterer.

Maheshpur, of Basanti Block have

very few roadways. From one village

to another often becomes very

difficult. It takes a very rote to reach

the destination. With the help of the

villagers and the village Panchayet

making of brick road was planned.

The problem was who will allow his/

her land to use as roadways. During

the meeting with villagers each family

agreed to allot 3 feet of their land for

the road. The foundation for the road

within the village was laid down. At least an auto-van could easily ferry if there is any

emergency. Local unemployed youth have

been given opportunity to earn through labor

work. It took 15 days to complete. The work

finished on 17th

May 2011.Maheshpur is a

village in the Basanti Block and is

undeveloped because it is in the interior part

of Basanti. People are very poor and depend

on their living by catching crabs from the

nearby river. At present due to climatic

changes they get nothing. They often starve,

cannot support their family. This roadway

will help them reach to Basanti market in

short time and get alternative works to earn.

Due to shortage of fund this road was made

in 2 phase each 50 meter length. Thanks to

the local Gram Panchayet and the local

youths who have come forward to make this

development a success. There is nearly one

kilometer road which has to be completed.

During rainy season people often fall in the

pond because the mud road gives away, washed out in the heavy rain making pond and

road at same level. Last year a 5 year old child died by drowning during the rain not

knowing where he stepped, thus fell into the pond.

Maheshpur has no safe drinking water. After meeting the BDO permission was taken

to put up a water tap at the interval, this safe drinking water tap has been installed.

Several families are benefiting from this water connection. Hope to install more such

taps at regular interval of the village.

Every year thousands of rupees is

spend on agriculture. Many have been

trained to use organic method of

agriculture. Many farmers have done

the organic agriculture successfully. It

all began during the seminar held in our

school hall. Now the Poritranseva

school hall is used as different training

centre. More than 800 sq ft of space,

with electricity and toilet facility has

made the place an ideal spot for

training.

The villagers have come forward to implement the programme and bring awareness

among the other villages of south 24 Parganas. There are all together 13 village. Twice

a year the awareness programme is held. Due to rain the crops have been affected. New

method is been tried to save and store water. Soon there will be at least 3 times crop

harvesting in a year. The experiments have been done at different level to use organic

pesticide. The crops grown at our field are given to the poor family of the village.

The vegetables cultivated with organic fertilizer.

Free from synthetic poison.
