BUSINESS WOMAN

RANJAN DHIRAJLAL GADA

It all started about 20 years ago, when her family lost everything as one of the banks collapsed and all their savings were gone within a day. That’s when she decided to turn her passion for cooking into a Home based Business and started making Savoury snacks. As days passed the demand for her snacks started increasing, and to meet the demands she used to start her work every day as early as 4.00am. From the beginning her husband had always supported her.

To meet the ever increasing demand for snacks, in 2012 she opened Royal Snacks Limited. From hereon it became a family business, and her hobby had now turned into a very good business platform for her family.

She gives all this credit to God for giving her the determination towards the work and her esteemed customers for always showing their trust and support.

Today Ranjan and Royal Snacks are a brand name in most households for her delicious Snacks.

VANITA KISHOR SHAH

At a young age Vanita wanted to make an impact, her real challenge started when she became a single mum. She came to realise that not only her entrepreneurship but entrepreneurship of her life was required to help her sons achieve their dreams. This (her goal) was so strong that she couldn't let anything exterior affect her.

She started her business Humpty Dumpty Gift Shop which dealt with confectionery items and ladies footwear. She had to grow as a leader in all aspects - spiritually, health, selfimage, networking, financially, and social consciences. It wasn't just about growing the business but duplicating the right values and principles to her sons too. Her past experiences got her to where she is today by tackling the challenges and becoming the woman that has inspired many and made herself a better person today. When she saw her older son graduated with honors in Chemical Engineering in the

States and recruited in the United States Military, and her younger son in Canada and running a successful business, she definitely feels that her struggles have paid off.

“We can all make a difference in the lives of others in need because it is the most simple gestures that make the most significant differences.” (Miya Yamanouchi)

Helping others was an intrinsic value nurtured from birth by her mother who has been her role model.

Getting married into a family that also believes in the same values helped strengthen it.

Her own journey started as a volunteer at a hospital in London.

Returning to Kenya in 2009, she became part of a group that started a school in Athiriver for orphans and single parent children.

She has been actively managing the school on behalf of the group, which saw it flourish from one class of 25 to seven classes with 150 children.

Three years ago she also started a feeding program on Sundays whereby a hot nutritious lunch is served to under privileged children.

Priti is grateful to God for giving her an opportunity to be able to make a difference.

We try and suffice them with their basic needs such as bedding, clothing and food & education which is a vital part of this young generation. Not only do we support the local community but also support the community we belong in, Visa Oshwal Community. BHIMJI DEPAR SHAH

Bhimji Depar is the founding Chairman of Bidco Africa, East Africa's largest and most vibrant manufacturer of edible oils and hygiene products. A household name across Africa and the world.

At 86 years of age, B D Shah as he is widely known is at the office everyday but his elevated status at Bidco is only one side of his remarkable story. Born in Mombasa, BD Shah's rise to corporate titan is one of hard work, resilience and self-belief. It is a story of sacrifice, patience and the refusal to give up. It is a once in a generation kind of story. With his education curtailed for the lack of school fees, BD Shah begins his professional life at the Port of Mombasa as a casual labourer- a porter carrying goods on his back at the age of 14. Even at that young age BD feels the stirring to be an entreprneur and even after leaving the port- he only takes one more job. Then begins a life of entrepreneurship. Over the 25 years BD Shah tried his hand at numerous businesses: retail; oil and gas, fashion and his favourite-farming. When the textile sector was liberalised allowing for the

importation dealing a deathly blow to the Bidco Garment Factory. With his two sons already out of University; BD Shah was having to start all over again with no money but still with hard work, self-belief and a can do attitude.

The rest as they say is history. A humble soap making operation was started in 1985 and despite the banks refusing to fund him BD and his sons were able to build the company and make into East Africa's largest homegrown FMCG manuafcturer employing tens of thousands of Kenyans and nourishing generations in the process. BD is a living example of how far a positive mindset can take you and the value of not giving up.

B. D Shah has supported tens of Oshwal entrepreneurs start their own businesses. He has contributed greatly to the causes of the Oshwal Community. B.D Shah was named by Forbes Africa as the Wealthiest individual in Kenya-together with his sons Vimal and Tarun.
