Flesh as Food

“From the beginning it was not so”

The diet appointed man in the beginning did not include animal food. In choosing man’s food in Eden,

Yah Allah showed what was the best diet; in the choice made to the children of Abraham He taught the

same lesson. He brought the children of Abraham out of Egypt, and undertook their training, that they

might be a people for His own possession. Through them He desired to bless and teach the world. He

provided them with the food best adapted for this purpose, not flesh but manna, “the bread of

Heaven.” It was only because of their discontent and their murmuring for the flesh-pots of Egypt that

animal food was granted to them, and this only for a short time. Its use brought disease and death to

thousands. Yet the restriction to a non-flesh diet was never heartily accepted. It continued to be the

cause of discontent and murmuring, open or secret, and it was not made permanent.

The children of Abraham were prohibited the use of swine’s flesh, as also other animals and of birds and

fish whose flesh were pronounced “unclean”. The eating of blood and fat was strictly forbidden. No

creature that was torn, that had died of itself, or its carcasses were forbidden to touch. By departing

from the plan divinely appointed for their diet, the children of Abraham suffered a great loss. They

desired a flesh diet, and they reaped its results. As a result, the children of Abraham have failed to

reach Yah Allah’s ideal of character or fulfill His purpose. Yah Allah “gave them their request, but sent

leanness into their soul.” Ps. 106:15. They valued the earthly above the spiritual, and the sacred

preeminence which was His purpose for them they did not attain.

Reasons for Discarding Flesh Foods

Those who eat flesh are but eating grains and vegetables at second hand; for the animal receives from

these things the nutrition that produces growth. The life that was in the grains and vegetables passes

into the eater. We receive it by eating flesh of the animal. How much better to get it direct, buy eating

the food that Yah Allah provided for our use!

Flesh was never the best food; but it use is now doubly objectionable, since disease in animals is so

rapidly increasing. Those who use flesh foods little know what they are eating. Often if they could see

the animals when living and know the quality of the meat they eat, they would turn from it with

loathing. People are continually eating flesh that is filled with turberculous and cancerous germs.

Tuberculosis, cancer and other fatal diseases are thus communicated.

The tissues of the swine swarm with parasites. For example, of the swine Yah Allah said, “it is unclean

unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass.” Deut. 14:8. This command was

given because swine’s flesh is unfit for food. Swine are scavengers, and this is the only use they were

intended to serve. Never, under any circumstances, was their flesh to be eating by human beings. It is

impossible for the flesh of any living creature to be wholesome when filth is its natural element, and

when it feeds upon every detestable thing.

Often animals are taken to the market, and sold for food, when they are so diseased that their owners

fear to keep them longer. And some of the processes of the fattening them for market produce disease.

Shut away from the light and pure air, breathing the atmosphere of filthy stables, perhaps fattening on

decaying food, the entire body soon becomes contaminated with foul matter.

Animals are often transported long distances and subjected to great suffering in reaching a market.

Taken from the green pastures, and traveling for weary miles over hot, dusty roads, or crowded into

filthy cars, feverish and exhausted, often for many hours deprived of food and water, the poor creatures

are driven to their death, that human beings may feast on the carcasses.

In many places fish and all the sea creatures become so contaminated by the filth on which they feed as

to be a cause of disease. This is especially the case with fish come in contact with the sewage of large

cities. The fish that are fed on the contents of the drains may pass into distant waters, and may be

caught where the water is pure and fresh. Thus when used as food they bring disease and death on

those who do not suspect the danger.

The effects of a flesh diet may not be immediately realized; but this is no evidence that it is not harmful.

Few can be made to believe that it is the meat they have eaten which has poisoned their blood and

caused their suffering. Many die of diseases wholly due to meat-eating, while the real cause is not

suspected by themselves or by others.

The moral evils of flesh diet are not less marked than are the physical ills. Flesh food is injurious to

health, and whatever affects the human body has a corresponding effect on the mind and the soul.

Think of the cruelty of the animals that meat-eating involves, and its effect on those who inflict and

those who behold it. How it destroys the tenderness with which we should regard these creatures of

Yah Allah!

The intelligence display by many domesticated animals approaches so closely to human intelligence that

it is a mystery. The animals see and hear and love and fear and suffer. They use their organs far more

faithfully than many human beings use theirs. They manifest sympathy and tenderness toward their

companions in suffering. Many animals show an affection for those who have charge of them, far

superior to the affection shown by some of the human race. They form attachments for man which are

not broken without great suffering to them.

What man with a human heart, who has ever cared for domestic animals, could look into their eyes, so

full of confidence and affection, and willingly give them over to the butcher’s knife? How could he

devour their flesh as a sweet morsel?

Changing the Diet

It is a mistake to suppose that muscular strength depends on the use of animal food. The needs of the

system can be better supplied, and more vigorous health can be enjoyed, without its use. The grains,

with fruits, nuts, and vegetables, contain all the nutritive properties necessary to make good blood.

These elements are not so well or so fully supplied by the flesh diet. Had the use of flesh been essential

to health and strength, animal food would have been included in the diet appointed man in the

beginning.

When the use of flesh food is discontinued, there is often a sense of weakness, a lack of vigor. Many

urge this evidence that flesh food is essential; but it is because foods of this class are stimulating,

because they fever the blood and excite the nerves, that they are so missed. Some will find it as difficult

to leave off flesh-eating as it is for the drunkard to give up his dram; but the will be better for the

change.

When flesh food is discarded, its place should be supplied with a variety of grains, nuts, vegetables, and

fruits that will be both nourishing and appetizing. This is especially necessary in the case of those who

are weak, or who are taxed with continuous labor. In some countries, where poverty abounds, flesh is

the cheapest food. Under these circumstances the change will be made with greater difficulty; but it can

be effected. We should, however, consider the situation of the people and the power of lifelong habit,

and should be careful not to urge even right ideas unduly. None should be urged to make the change

abruptly. The place of meat should be supplied with wholesome foods that are inexpensive. In this

matter very much depends on the cook. With care and skills, dishes may be prepared that will be both

nutritious and appetizing, and will, to a great degree, take the place of flesh food.

In all cases, educate the conscience, enlist the will, supply good, wholesome food, and the change will

be readily made, and the demand for flesh will soon cease.

Is it not time that all should aim to dispense with flesh foods? How can those who are seeking to

become pure, refined, and holy, that they may have companionship of heavenly angels, continue to use

as food anything that has so harmful an effect on soul and body? How can they take the life of Yah

Allah’s creatures that they may consume the flesh as luxury? Let them, return to the wholesome and

delicious food given to man in the beginning, and themselves practice, and teach their children to

practice, mercy toward the domestic animals that Yah Allah has made and has placed them under our

dominion and protection and care.

All Prophets Most Agree

Hazrat Mahdi Eliyahu is the Interpreter of the Law as recorded by the prophets and ancient sages.

THE HIDDEN WISDOM OF HAZRAT MAHDI

Abdullah asked: So what is the wisdom behind his knowledge of the spiritual world? The imam answered: “... Like the wisdom behind what Khidr (as) did when erecting the wall… the wisdom behind that will also be apparent when he appears. It was not clear who would go until they left with the Prophet Musa (as). O son of Fazl! This is the work of Allah and the secret and wisdom behind his knowledge of the spiritual world is one of the secrets and wisdom of Allah. IN THE SAME WAY WE BELIEVE THAT ALLAH IS OMNISCIENT, WE MUST ALSO BE CERTAIN THERE IS WISDOM BEHIND ALL THAT HE (HAZRAT MAHDI [AS]) DOES. EVEN IF WE ARE UNAWARE OF THE DETAIL OF THAT WISDOM, WE MUST STILL ACT ACCORDINGLY.” *Molla Bakr Majlisi, Jila-ul-Uyun, 3/157]

HAZRAT MAHDI THE INTERPRETER OF THE SACRED SCRIPTURES OF THE PROPHETS Jabir Ibn Yazid al-Jo'fi narrates from Imam Muhammad Baqr: "...The reason why Hazrat Mahdi (as) is known as Hazrat Mahdi (as) is this; he will be directed toward a secret matter, will extract the Torah and other Divine books from a cave in Antioch and will RULE AMONG JEWS WITH THE TORAH AND AMONG CHRISTIANS WITH THE GOSPEL. (Al-Mahdiy al-Mawud, Vol. 1, pp. 254-255) "The reason why he is called Hazrat Mahdi (as) is that he will head to one of the mountains in Sham. From there HE WILL PRODUCE THE (TRUE) BOOKS OF THE TORAH AND RAISE EVIDENCE AGAINST THE JEWS.” (Suyuti, al-Hawi al-Fatawa, II. 81) Harun Ibn Maruf narrates from Zamra Ibn Rabia from Abdullah Ibn Shawzab: "It is certain that Hazrat Mahdi (as) is known as the ‘Mahdi.’ (as) Because he will be directed to salvation to one of the mountains of Sham, FROM WHERE HE WILL EXTRACT THE BOOKS (VOLUMES) OF THE “TORAH” AND WILL ENTER INTO DEBATE WITH THE JEWS ON THE BASIS OF THESE AND (EVENTUALLY) A GROUP OF JEWS WILL BECOME MUSLIMS BY HIS HAND. The reason he is called the ‘Mahdi’ (as) is this. HE WILL EXTRACT THE BOOKS OF THE TORAH from inside one of the mountains of Sham where the Jews go on pilgrimage, AND ONE COMMUNITY FROM THE JEWS WILL BECOME MUSLIM BY HIS HAND. (Hadith from Jalaluddin As-Suyuti’s Commentary, Portents of the Mahdi of the End Times Muallif Ali Ibn Husammaddin al Muttaqi, Kahraman Publications, p.77) We sent down the Torah containing guidance and light, AND THE PROPHETS WHO HAD SUBMITTED THEMSELVES GAVE JUDGMENT BY IT FOR THE JEWS – AS DID THEIR SCHOLARS AND THEIR RABBIS – BY WHAT THEY HAD BEEN ALLOWED TO PRESERVE OF ALLAH’S BOOK TO WHICH THEY WERE WITNESSES. Do not be afraid of people, be

Imam Mahdi (as) will rule the people of the Torah with the Torah, the people of the Injil with the Injil, the people of the Psalms with the Psalms and the people of the Qur’an with the Qur’an. Counsel from Torah by the Prophet Moses (PBUH)

Prophet Moses (PBUH): And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face

of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it

shall be for food. Genesis 1:29

Prophet Moses (PBUH): It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood. Leviticus 3:17 “Or if any one touch any unclean thing, whether it be the carcass of an unclean beast, or the carcass of unclean cattle, or the carcass of unclean swarming things, and be guilty, it being hidden from him that he is unclean;” - Leviticus 5:2 “And by these ye shall become unclean; whosoever toucheth the carcass of them shall be unclean until even.” - Leviticus 11:24 “And if any beast, of which ye eat, die, he that toucheth the carcass thereof shall be unclean until the even” – Leviticus 11:29(30) “And if any one sin, and do any of the things which the L-RD hath commanded not to be done, though he know it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.”- Leviticus 5:17

Prophet Samuel (PBUH): “And Samuel said: 'Hath the L-RD has great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, as in hearkening to the voice of the L-RD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” 1 Samuel 15:22

Prophet Jeremiah (PBUH): “Of what use to me is frankincense that comes from Sheba, or sweet cane from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor are your sacrifices pleasing to me.” - Jeremiah 6:20

“Thus saith the L-RD of hosts, the G-d of Israel: Add your burnt-offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat ye flesh. For I spoke not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt-offerings or sacrifices;” Jeremiah 7:21-22 “To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto Me? saith the L-RD; I am full of the burnt-offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he-goats.” Jeremiah 1:11

Prophet Isaiah (PBUH): “What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? Says the Lord; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. When you come to appear before me, who asked this from your hand?” - Isaiah 1:11-12 “When you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed ...” - Isaiah 1:15-17 A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick; Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine's flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels; Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day. Isaiah 65:3-5 “He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he broke a dog's neck; he that offereth a meal- offering, as if he offered swine's blood; he that maketh a memorial-offering of frankincense, as if he blessed an idol; according as they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations;” Isaiah 66:3

Prophet Daniel (PBUH): And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king. (Dan 1:5) But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. (Dan 1:8) Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse. (Dan 1:16) And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king. (Dan 1:19) And in all matters of wisdom and understanding that the king enquired of them he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm. (Dan 1:20) – Daniel 1:5, 8, 16, 19-20

King David (PBUH):

“For Thou delightest not in sacrifice, else would I give it; Thou hast no pleasure in burnt-offering.” Tehilim 51:16 (51:18) “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the L-RD; but the prayer of the upright is His delight.” Proverbs 15:8 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all that is in it is mine. Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?” - Psalm 50:12-13

King Solomon (PBUH):

"A good man takes care of his animals, but wicked men are cruel to theirs." - Proverbs 12:10

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Protect the rights of all who are helpless." Proverbs 31:8 “Do not be among winebibbers, or among gluttonous eaters of meat.” - Proverbs 23:20 “To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the L-RD than sacrifice.” - Proverbs 21:3

Prophet Micah (PBUH):

“'Wherewith shall I come before the L-RD, and bow myself before G-d on high? Shall I come before Him with burnt-offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the L-RD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?' It hath been told thee, O man, what is good, and what the L-RD doth require of thee: only to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy G-d.” Mikah 6:6-8 “Guard thy foot when thou goest to the house of G-d, and be ready to hearken: it is better than when fools give sacrifices; for they know not that they do evil.” Ecclesiastes 5:1 (4:17)

Prophet Hosea (PBUH):

“For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of G-d rather than burnt-offerings.” Hosea 6:6 “Though they offer choice sacrifices, though they eat flesh, the Lord does not accept them. Now he will remember their iniquity, and punish their sins...” - Hosea 8:13

Prophet Amos (PBUH): “I hate, I despise your festivals, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and meat offerings, I will not accept them; and the offerings of well-being of your fatted animals I will not look upon. Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to the melody of your harps. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” - Amos 5:21-24

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch explained, "You may not in any way weaken your health or shorten your life. Only if the body is healthy is it an efficient instrument for the spirit's activity....Therefore you should avoid everything which might possibly injure your health.... And the law asks you to be even more circumspect in avoiding danger to life and limb than in the avoidance of other transgressions." - Rabbi Samsom Raphael Hirsch, Horeb, Chapter 62, Section 428 G-d repeatedly exhorts us to take care of ourselves: "Do not commit suicide!" "Do not injure yourself!" "Do not ruin yourself!" "Do not endanger yourself!" "Do not weaken yourself!" "Preserve yourself!" - Ibid., Section 427 According to Maimonides, "Since maintaining a healthy and sound body is among the ways of G-d - for one cannot understand or have knowledge of the Creator if one is ill - therefore one must avoid that which harms the body and accustom oneself to that which is helpful and helps the body become stronger." - Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Deot 4:1

AFTER THE DESTRUCTION OF THE TEMPLE 70 C.E.

“When the temple was destroyed, the number of those who practiced abstinence in

Israel increased; they neither ate meat nor drank wine. ” (Talmud, Baba Batra 60 b) COMPASSION TOWARDS ANIMALS FROM TORAH:

In Exodus, G-d insists that "If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee laying under its burden, thou shalt surely not pass by him; thou shalt surely unload it with him." - Exodus 23:5

Indeed, the welfare of animals is so important that the fifth commandment mentions them specifically, and they too must be allowed to rest on the Sabbath. - Exodus 20:8-10, Deuteronomy 5:12-14

The Talmud futher insists that "A person should not eat or drink before first providing for his animals."- from Deuteronomy 11:15

In Deuteronomy, the Torah instructs us not to take the mother bird and its young together. - Deuteronomy 22:6-7

"The righteous man regardeth the life of his animal."- Proverbs 12:10

"God's tender mercies are over all His creatures." (Psalms 145:9).

COMPASSION TOWARDS ANIMALS FROM THE SAGES: While our teacher Moses was tending the sheep of Jethro in the wilderness a lamb ran away from him. He ran after her until she reached Hasuah. Upon reaching Hasuah she came upon a pool of water [whereupon] the lamb stopped to drink. When Moses reached her he said, "I did not know that you were running because [you were] thirsty.

You must be tired." He placed her on his shoulder and began to walk. The Holy One, blessed be He, said, "You are compassionate in leading flocks belonging to mortals; I swear you will similarly shepherd my flock, Israel." (Exodus Rabbah 2:2)

"Here you are faced with G-d's teaching, which obliges you not only to refrain from inflicting unnecessary pain on any animal, but to help and, when you can, to lessen the pain whenever you see an animal suffering, even through no fault of yours." (Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, Horeb, Chapter 60, Section 416)

The Code of Jewish Law states, "It is forbidden, according to the law of the Torah, to inflict pain upon any living creature. On the contrary, it is our duty to relieve pain of any creature, even if it is ownerless of belongs to a non-Jew.” - Rabbi Solomon Granzfried, Code of Jewish Law, New York: Hebrew Publishing Co., 1961, book 4, Chapter191, 84.

As Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch wrote, "Here you are faced with G-d's teaching, which obliges you not only to refrain from inflicting unnecessary pain on any animal, but to help and, when you can, to lessen the pain whenever you see an animal suffering, even though no fault of yours."- Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, Horeb, Chapter 60, Section 416

The Hebrew term nefesh chaya ("living soul") was applied in Genesis (1:21, 1:24) to animals as well as people. Moses and King David were deemed suitable for leadership because of their compassionate treatment of sheep in their care. Rebecca was judged suitable as Isaac's wife because of her kindness in watering the ten camels of Eliezer, Abraham's servant Rabbi Judah, the Prince, redactor of the Mishna was stricken with pain by the hand of Heaven for many years for his callous treatment of a calf on the way to slaughter.

ANIMAL BAITING AND BLOOD SPORTS: The rabbis further demonstrated their concern for animals by so strongly disapproving of sport hunting, that the Talmud prohibits even association with hunters.- Avodah Zorah 18b

PEOPLE’S ROLE TO ENHANCE THE WORLD:

"co-partners of G-d in the work of creation" (Shabbat 7a)

"The earth is the L-rd's and the fullness thereof." (Psalm 24:10)

created it. Think upon this and do not destroy and desolate My World, For if you corrupt it, there is no one to set it right after you."' (Midrash Ecclesiastes Rabbah 7:28)

When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your hands, The moon and work which you have established, What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You do care for him? Yet you have made him little less than G-d, and do crown him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet.... Psalm 8:4-7

COMMANDMENT TO WORK THE LAND And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corner of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleaning of thy harvest. And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather the fallen fruit of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and for the stranger; I am the L-rd, thy G-d. - Leviticus 19:9-10

As a reminder that "the earth is the L-rd's," the land must be permitted to rest and lie fallow every seven years (the sabbatical year): And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and gather in the increase thereof, but the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lay fallow, that the poor of thy people may eat; and what they leave, the beast of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with the vineyard, and with thy oliveyard. - Exodus 23:10-11

COMMANDMENT TO PRESERVE THE TREES When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shall not destroy (lo tashchit) the trees thereof by wielding an ax against them; for thou mayest eat of them but thou shalt not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of thee? Only the trees of which thou knoweth that they are not trees for food, them thou mayest destroy and cut down, that thou mayest build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it fall. - Deuteronomy 20:19-20

It is forbidden to cut down even a barren tree or to waste anything if no useful purpose is accomplished. - Sefer Ha-Chinuch 530

"Whoever breaks vessels or tears garments, or destroys a building, or clogs up a fountain, or destroys food violates the prohibition of bal tashchit". Kidushin 32a

"regard things as G-d's property and use them with a sense of responsibility for wise human purposes. Destroy nothing! Waste nothing!" - Horeb; Vol. 2, p. 282

Two men entered a shop. One ate coarse bread and vegetables, while the other ate fine bread, fat meat, and drank old wine. The one who ate fine food suffered harm, while the one who had coarse food escaped harm. Observe how simply animals live and how healthy they are as a result. - Ecclesiastes Rabbah 1:18

Ancient Texts concerning Issa Al-Masih

Issa Al Masih (PBUH): But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Mat 9:13 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. Mat 12:7 “Is it not written: My house shall be called a house of prayer for all people? But you have

made it a den of robbers.” - Mark. 11:17

'Thou shalt not kill any living thing,' for life is given to all by God, and that which God has given, let not man taketh it away. ~Jesus, Gospel of the Holy Twelve, (earliest known recorded words of Jesus) “I came to end the animal sacrifices, and if you do not stop making sacrifices, the wrath of God (the law of cause and effect) will not leave you alone.” - Epiphanius, Panarion 3:16

End the Abominable Blood Sacrifices: “Verily, I say to you, I Am come into the world, in order to put an end to all blood offerings and to the eating of the flesh of animals and birds that are slain by men.”

“This Is My Word” Chap. 75:9, p. 788 “This original gospel is one of the oldest and most complete early fragments and is preserved in a Buddhist monastery in Tibet, where it was hidden by members of the Essene community, in order to protect it from the hands of falsifiers.”

Blood Sacrifices take away sin? 1. Jesus taught His disciples in the outer court of the temple, and one of them said to Him, “Master, it is said by the priests that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Can then the lawful blood sacrifices take away sins?” 2. And Jesus answered, “No blood sacrifice of animal or bird or man can take away sins. For how can a guilt be paid off by shedding innocent blood? No, it will increase the guilt. 3. The priests indeed receive such offerings as an appeasement from the faithful for the violations against the law of Moses; but for the sins against the law of God, there is no forgiveness except by repentance and a change for the better. (Chap. 33), “The Gospel of Jesus,” Verlag DAS WORT,Rottweil 1968

Eating Meat is Unlawful: 4. Is it not written in the prophets: Take your blood sacrifices and your burnt offerings, and away with them. Stop eating meat; for I did not speak of this to your forefathers, nor have I commanded them to do so when I led them out of Egypt. But this is what I commanded them:

5. Obey My voice and walk the paths that I have commanded of you, and you will be My people and things will go well for you. And yet they were not so inclined and did not listen. 6. And what did the Eternal command you, other than to practice justice and mercy and to walk humbly with your God? Is it not written that, in the beginning, God ordained the fruits of the trees and the seeds and the plants to be food for all flesh? 7. But they have made of the house of prayer a den of thieves and, instead of the pure offering with incense, they have stained My altars with blood and have eaten the flesh of slain animals. 8. But I say to you: Shed no innocent blood and eat no flesh. Be upright, love mercy and do right, and your days will endure in the land for a long time. (Chap. 33) - “The Gospel of Jesus,” Verlag DAS WORT,Rottweil 1968 9. Verily, I say to you, I Am come into the world in order to put an end to all blood offerings and to the eating of the flesh of animals and birds that are slain by men. (Chap. 75). - “The Gospel of Jesus,” Verlag DAS WORT,Rottweil 1968

Issa Al-Mashi Protector of the Animal Kingdom: 6. As Jesus went with some of His disciples, He met a man who trained dogs to hunt other animals. And He said to the man, “Why do you do this?” And the man answered, “Because I live from this. What sorts of use have these animals? These animals are weak, but the dogs are strong.” And Jesus said to him, “You lack wisdom and love. Behold, every creature that God has created has its meaning and purpose. And who can say what good there is in it or what use it is to you or to mankind? 7. And for your living, behold the fields, how they grow and are fertile, and the fruit-bearing trees and the herbs. What more do you want than what the honest work of your hands will give you? Woe to the strong who misuse their strength. Woe to the crafty who hurt the creatures of God! Woe to the hunters! For they themselves shall be hunted.” 8. And the man was very astonished and stopped training the dogs to hunt; and he taught them to save life, not to destroy it. And he embraced the teachings of Jesus and became His disciple. (Chap. 14) “The Gospel of Jesus,” Verlag DAS WORT, Rottweil 1968 1. And it happened one day, after Jesus had finished His speaking, that, in a place near Tiberias where there are seven wells, a young man brought Him live rabbits and doves, that He might consume them with His disciples. 2. And Jesus looked at the young man lovingly and said to him, “You have a good heart and God will enlighten you; but do you not know that in the beginning God gave man the fruits of the earth for food and by this did not make him lower than the apes, or the oxen, or the horse or the sheep, that he may kill his fellow creatures and consume their flesh and blood? 3. You believe that Moses commanded such creatures to be offered in sacrifice and consumed and so you do this in the temple; but see, One greater than Moses is here and He comes to abolish the blood sacrifices of the law and the orgies and to restore the

pure offering and the bloodless sacrifice as it was in the beginning, namely, the grains and the fruits of the earth. 5. Therefore, let the creatures go free, that they may rejoice in God and bring no guilt to man.” And the young man set them free and Jesus tore apart their cages and their fetters. 6. But see, they were afraid to be taken captive once more and did not want to leave Him. But He spoke to them and sent them away and they obeyed His words and departed full of joy. (Chap. 28), “The Gospel of Jesus,” Verlag DAS WORT, Rottweil 1968 1. And it came to pass that the Lord departed from the city and went into the mountains with His disciples. And they came to a mountain with very steep paths. There they met a man with a beast of burden. 2. But the horse had collapsed, for it was overladen. The man struck it till the blood flowed. And Jesus went to him saying, “You son of cruelty, why do you strike your animal? Do you not see that it is much too weak for its burden and do you not know that it suffers?” 3. But the man retorted, “What have You to do therewith? I may strike my animal as much as it pleases me, for it belongs to me; and I bought it with a goodly sum of money. Ask those who are with You, for they are from my neighborhood and know thereof.” 4. And some of the disciples answered, saying, “Yes, Lord, it is as he said, we were there when he bought the horse.” And the Lord rejoined, “Do you not see then how it is bleeding, and do you not hear how it wails and laments?” But they answered saying, “No, Lord, we do not hear that it wails or laments.” 5. And the Lord became sad and said, “Woe to you; because of the dullness of your heart, you do not hear how it laments and cries to its heavenly Creator for pity; but thrice woe to the one against whom it cries and wails in its torment!” 6. And He went forward and touched the horse, and the animal stood up, and its wounds were healed. But He said to the man, “Go on your way now and henceforth strike it no more, if you, too, hope to find mercy.” 7. And seeing the people come to Him, Jesus said to His disciples, “Because of the sick, I Am sick; because of the hungry, I go hungry; because of the thirsty, I suffer thirst.” 8. And He also said, “I have come to put an end to the sacrifices and feasts of blood. If you do not cease to offer and consume the flesh and blood of animals, the wrath of God will not cease to come upon you, just as it came upon your ancestors in the wilderness, who indulged in the consumption of flesh and were filled with rottenness and consumed by pestilence. (Chap. 21); “The Gospel of Jesus,” Verlag DAS WORT, Rottweil 1968 12. Jesus went to Jerusalem and came upon a camel with a heavy burden of wood. The camel could not haul its load up the hill and the driver beat it and treated it cruelly, but could not get the animal to move. 13. And as Jesus saw it, He said to him, “Why do you beat your brother?” And the man retorted, “I did not know that it is my brother. Is it not a beast of burden, made to serve me?” 14. And Jesus said, “Has not the same God created this animal and your children who

serve you from the same material and have you not both received the same breath from God?” 15. And the man was very astonished by this talk. He stopped beating the camel and freed it from a part of its burden. And so, the camel went up the hill and Jesus went before it and it no longer stopped until the end of its day’s journey. 16. The camel recognized Jesus, for it had felt the love of God in Him. And the man wanted to know more of the teachings and Jesus taught him gladly and he became His follower. (Chap. 31), “The Gospel of Jesus,” Verlag DAS WORT, Rottweil 1968 1. And some of His disciples came to Him and spoke to Him about an Egyptian, a son of Belial, who taught that it is not against the law to torment animals if their suffering brings profit to people. 2. And Jesus said to them, “Verily, I say to you, the one who derives benefit from the injustice that is inflicted on a creature of God cannot be righteous. Just as little can those whose hands are stained with blood or whose mouths are defiled with flesh deal with holy matters or teach the mysteries of heaven. 3. God gives the grains and the fruits of the earth as food; and for the righteous man, there is no other lawful nourishment for the body. 4. The robber who breaks into a house built by man is guilty; but even the least of those who break into a house built by God are the greater sinners. This is why I say to all who want to become My disciples, keep your hands free from bloodshed and let no meat touch your lips; for God is just and bountiful and has ordained that man shall live by the fruits and seeds of the earth alone. 5. But if an animal suffers greatly, so that its life is a torment for it, or if it becomes dangerous to you, release it from its life quickly and with as little pain as you can. Send it to the other side in love and mercy and do not torment it, and God, your Father, will show mercy to you, just as you have shown mercy to those who were given into your hands. 6. And whatever you do to the least of My children, you do to Me. For I Am in them and they are in Me. Yes, I Am in all creatures and all creatures are in Me. In all their joys, I, too, rejoice and in all their afflictions, I, too, suffer. This is why I say to you: Be kind to one another and to all the creatures of God.” (Chap. 38), “The Gospel of Jesus,” Verlag DAS WORT, Rottweil 1968 1. And as Jesus was going to Jericho, He met a man with young doves and a cage full of birds which he had caught. And He saw their misery, as they had lost their freedom and, furthermore, were suffering hunger and thirst. 2. And He said to the man, “What are you doing with these?” And the man answered, “I earn my living by selling the birds which I have caught.” 3. And Jesus said to him, “What would you think, if someone stronger or more clever than you would capture and shackle you, or would throw your wife or your children and you into prison, in order to sell you for his own profit and to earn his living from this? 4. Are these not your fellow creatures, only weaker than you? And does not the same God, Father and Mother, care for them as for you? Let these, your little brothers and sisters, go forth into freedom and see to it that you never do such a thing again, but that you earn your bread honestly.”

5. And the man was astounded at these words and His authority, and he let the birds go free. As the birds came out, they flew to Jesus, sat upon His shoulders and sang to Him. 6. And the man asked more about His teachings and he went his way and learned basket weaving. He earned his bread from this work and broke his cages and traps and became a disciple of Jesus. (Chap. 41), “The Gospel of Jesus,” Verlag DAS WORT, Rottweil 1968

Animal Kingdom is the Family of Man:

7. Jesus came into a village and saw there a stray kitten, and it suffered from hunger and cried out to Him. And He picked it up, wrapped it in His robe and let it rest at His breast. 8. And when He went through the village, He gave the cat to eat and to drink. And it ate and drank and showed Him its thanks. And He gave it to one of His disciples, a widow called Lorenza, and she took care of it. 9. And some of the people said, “This man takes care of all the animals. Are they His brothers and sisters, that He loves them so?” And He said to them, “Verily, these are your fellow brothers from the great family of God, your brothers and sisters who have the same breath of life from the Eternal. 10. And whoever cares for the least of them and gives it food and drink in its need does this to Me, and the one who deliberately allows that one of them suffer privation and does not defend it when it is ill-treated allows this evil to happen as if it were done to Me. For just as you have done in this life will it be done to you in the life to come.” (Chap. 34), “The Gospel of Jesus,” Verlag DAS WORT, Rottweil 1968

The Holy Twelve:

"Verily I say unto you, they who partake of benefits which are gotten by wronging one of

God's creatures, cannot be righteous; nor can they understand holy things, or teach the

mysteries of the kingdom, whose hands are stained with blood, or whose mouths are

defiled with flesh.”

"God giveth the grains and the fruits of the earth for food; and for righteous man truly there is no other lawful sustenance for the body....”

your fathers in the wilderness, who lusted for flesh, and they ate to their content, and

were filled with rottenness, and the plague consumed them.

"And I say unto you, though ye be gathered together in my bosom, if ye keep not my commandments I will cast you forth; for, if ye keep not the lesser mysteries, who shall give you the greater?

"He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much." "A disciple of Jesus asked him a question, saying 'Master, if there come to us any that

"And Jesus said unto him, 'Let such abide in the outer court till they cleanse themselves from these grosser evils; for till they perceive, and repent of these, they are not fit to receive the higher mysteries.'" "For of the fruits of the trees and the seeds of the herbs alone do I partake, and these are

changed by the Spirit into my flesh and my blood. Of these alone and their like shall ye

eat who believe in me, and are my disciples, for of these in the Spirit, come life and

health and healing unto man."

Counsel from Christianity

Testimonies of the Apostles: But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. 1Co 10:20 But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: 1Co 10:28 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. The Writings of the Apostles

Ancient Writings from the 1st Century to 321 CE CHAPTER 15 – The Giants “But from their unhallowed intercourse spurious men

sprang, much greater in stature than [ordinary] men, whom they afterwards called

giants; not those dragon-footed giants who wage war against GOD, as those

blasphemous myths of the Greeks do sin, but wild in manners, and greater than men

size, inasmuch as they were sprung of angels; yet less than angels, as they were born of

women. Therefore GOD, knowing that they were barbarized to brutality, and that the

world was not sufficient to satisfy them (for it was created according to the proportion

of men and human use), that they might not through want of food turn, contrary to

nature, to the eating of animals, and yet seem to be blameless, as having ventured

upon this through necessity, the Almighty GOD rained manna upon them, suited to

their various tastes; and they enjoyed all that they would. But they, on account of their

bastard nature, not being pleased with purity of food, longed only after the taste of

blood. Wherefore they first tasted flesh. (The Clementine Homilies, Pg. 144 – The Writings of the

Apostolic Fathers, down to 325 AD)

CHAPTER 65 – Sacrifices “But that He is not pleased with sacrifices, is shown by this

that those who lusted after the flesh were slain as soon as they tasted it, and were

consigned to a tomb, so that it was called the grave of lusts. He then who at the first

was displeased with the slaughtering of animals, no wishing them to be slain, did not

ordain sacrifices as desiring them; nor from the beginning did He require them. For

neither are sacrifices accomplished without the slaughter of animals, no can the firs-

fruits be presented. But how is it possible for Him to abide in darkness, and smoke, and

storm (for this also is written), who created a pure heaven, and created the sun to give

light to all, and assigned the invariable order of their revolutions to innumerable stars?

Thus, O Simon, the handwriting of GOD – I mean the Heaven – shows the counsels of

Him who made it to be pure and stable. (The Clementine Homilies, Pg. 77 – The Writings of the

Apostolic Fathers, down to 325 AD)

CHAPTER 8 – The Best Merchandise “Many form of worship, then, having passed away

in the world, we come, bringing to you, as good merchantmen, the worship that has

been handed down to us from our fathers, and preserved; showing you, as it were, the

seeds of plants, and placing them under your judgment and in your power. Choose that

which seems good unto you. If, therefore, ye choose our wares, not only shall ye be

able to escape demons, and the sufferings which are inflicted by demons, but yourselves

also putting them to flight, and having them reduced to make supplication to you,

forever enjoy future blessings. (The Clementine Homilies, Pg. 152 – The Writings of the Apostolic

Fathers, down to 325 AD)

CHAPTER 9 – How demons get power over men “Since, on the other hand, you are

oppressed by strange sufferings inflicted by demons, on your removal from the body

you shall have your souls also punished for ever; not indeed by GOD’s inflicting

vengeance, but because such is the judgment of evil deeds. For the demons, having

power by means of the food given to them, are admitted into your bodies by your

own hands; and lying hid there for a long time, they become blended with your own

souls. And through the carelessness of those who think not, or even wish not, to help

themselves, upon the dissolution of their bodies, their soul being united to the demon,

are of necessity borne by it into whatever places it pleases. And what is most terrible of

all, when at the end of all things the demon is first consigned to the purifying fire, the

soul which is mixed with it is under the necessity of being horribly punished and the

demon of being pleased. For the soul, being made of light, and not capable of bearing

the heterogeneous flame, is tortured; but the demon, being in the substance of his own

kind, is greatly pleased, becoming the strong chain of the soul that he has swallowed up. (The Clementine Homilies, Pg. 152 – The Writings of the Apostolic Fathers, down to 325 AD)

CHAPTER 10 – How they are to be expelled “But the reason why the demons delight

in entering into men’s body is this. Being spirits, and having desires after meats and

drinks, and sexual pleasures, but not being able to partake of these reason of their

being spirits, and wanting organs fitted for their enjoyment, they enter into the bodies

of men, in order that, getting organs to minister to them, they may obtain the things

that they wish, whether it be meat, by means of men’s teeth, or sexual pleasure, by

means of men’s members. Hence, in order to the putting of demons to flight, the most

useful help is abstinence, and fasting, and suffering of affliction. For if they enter into

men’s bodies for the sake of sharing *pleasures+, it is manifest that they are put to flight

by suffering. But inasmuch as some [demons], being a more malignant kind, remain by

the body that is undergoing punishment, though they are punished with it, therefore it

is needful to have recourse to GOD by prayers and petitions, refraining from every

occasion of impurity, that the hand of GOD may touch him for his cure, as being pure

and faithful. (The Clementine Homilies, Pg. 153 – The Writings of the Apostolic Fathers, down to 325 AD)

SECTION 2:20 – On the formation of the Character of believers, and on giving of thanks

to GOD. Now concerning the several sorts of food, the LORD says to thee, “Ye shall eat

the good things of the earth;” and “All living things [such as vegetations] shall ye eat,

as the green herbs;”… but “do thou eat the fat of the land with righteousness.” For “if

there be anything pleasant, it is His; and if there be anything good, it is His. Wheat for

the young men, and [fresh] wine to cheer the maids.” For “who shall eat or drink

without Him?” Wise Ezra does also admonish thee, and say: “Go your way, and eat the

fat [of the land], and drink the sweet *of the fresh grape juice+, and be not sorrowful.” (The Apostolic Constitution, Pg. 184-5 – The Writings of the Apostolic Fathers, down to 325 AD)

The Gospel of the Egyptians, written ca. 110 A. D. “Eat every plant; do not eat those afflicted with bitterness.” (cited from Clemens of Alexandria, Stromateis 3:9 & 66)

The Gospel of Thomas, written ca. 150 A. D “Become peaceable, so that you do not [also] become cadavers and are eaten.” - the Gospel of Thomas

Clemens of Alexandria (150-215) “For within a moderate simplicity is there not a diversity of healthy foods: vegetables, roots, olives, herbs, milk, cheese, fruit and many kinds of dried foods? – Among the foods one should favor those that can be directly eaten without the use of fire, for they are always ready for us and are the simplest. – Accordingly, the apostle Matthew lived from seeds, hard-shelled fruits and vegetables, and ate no meat. And John, who practiced modesty to the utmost degree ate the buds of leaves and wild honey. – I think that the bloody sacrifices were invented solely by those people who sought an excuse for eating meat, which they also could have had without such idolatry.” - Clemens of Alexandria, Paidagogos II

Quintus Septimus Tertullianus, written ca. 160-221 A. D. Tertullianus appeared several times for the defense of the Christians when they were accused of making human sacrifices. “How shall I describe it, that you believe we are thirsty for human blood, for you do know that we loathe the blood of animals.” - Apol. Chap. 9; quoted from Robert Springer, p. 292

Theophilus of Antioch 2nd half of the 2nd Century: “Wild animals get their name from their wild nature, not because they were created evil from the very beginning ...; instead, the sins of man made them bad. For since man was diverted from the path, they also followed him ... If now man again raises himself to an existence fitting to his nature and no longer does evil, they, too, will return to their original gentle nature.” - Theophilus of Antioch 2nd half of the 2nd Century

Basilius the Great (329-379) “The body that is burdened with meat foods is plagued by illnesses; a moderate style of life makes it healthier and stronger and cuts off the root of evil. The vapors of meat foods darken the light of the spirit. It is hard for one to love virtue when one is gladdened by meat dishes and festive meals.” - Basilius the Great, Enkarpa, 1884 “Meat is a contradiction to food and it belongs to the world of the past.” - Clementine Homilies III, 45 “The Christians abstained from every kind of meat.” - Plinius in a letter to Trajan, Ep. Lib. X. 96 “In the earthly paradise, there was no wine, no one sacrificed animals and no one ate meat.” - From the epistles of Basilius the Great (329-379) cited from Carl Anders Skriver, “The Forgotten Beginnings of Creation and Christianity” p. 161 “As long as one lives frugally the luck of the house will increase; the animals will be safe; no blood will be shed, and no animal will be killed. The cook’s knife will be useless; the table will only be set with fruits which nature offers to us, and one will be satisfied with that.” - From the epistles of Basilius the Great (329-379) cited from Carl Anders Skriver, “The Forgotten Beginnings of Creation and Christianity” p. 161

Hieronymus (348-420): “It is better that you eat no meat and drink no wine. For drinking wine started with eating meat, after the great flood.” Hieronymus, Adversus Jovinanum 1:30 “Innocent foods are foods acquired without letting blood.” Hieronymus, Adversus Jovinanum 1:30 “Consuming meat, drinking wine and overfilling the stomach are the cradles of greed.” - Hieronymus, Adversus Jovinanum 1:30 “The consumption of animal flesh was unknown up until the great flood; but since then we have had the fibers and the stinking juices of animal flesh stuffed into our mouths ... Jesus Christ, who appeared when the time was fulfilled, again spanned the bow from the end to the beginning, so that we are no longer allowed to eat animal flesh...” – Hieronymus (Adversus Jovianianum 1:30)

John Chrysostomus (354-407) “No streams of blood flowed at their place; no flesh was slaughtered and cut to pieces ... One does not smell there the awful vapor of meals of meat ... one hears no racket and terrible noise. They eat only bread, which they earn through their work, and water that a pure spring offers them. When they want a lavish meal, then indulgence consists of fruits, and they find thereby higher enjoyment than at the royal tables.” - Homil. 69 "Flesh-meats and wine serve as materials for sensuality, and are a source of danger, sorrow, and disease. - John Chrysostom (D. 407), in his homily on Matthew xxii, 1-14

Aurelius Augustinus (354-430) Church father and greatest Latin Church teacher of antiquity, Augustinius also lived solely from plant foods. He attributed the ruinous passions of man to the eating of meat. In one of his works, he quoted Paul (Rom. 14:21), where Paul recommended that one eat no meat and drink no wine. - De vera Religione II, 161, 168

Gregory of Nazianz, Church father from Kappadozien

“But the seed of a good house father is the good wheat, from which he bakes bread ... The indulgence in meat dishes is a disgraceful wrong and I desire that you may strive to offer your soul nourishment that lasts eternally." - Robert Springer 1884

"Essene prophets who were attuned to the will of the Almighty, by virtue of their Holy

meditations and their lifestyle of Righteousness, prepared for generations for the arrival

of the Messiah of Peace. Genealogies were consulted and candidates were chosen and

raised to a holy life. Pure diet, free of the taint of death and blood, as well as training in

the Essene mysteries, brought forth children of a Holy nature, from which new

candidates were chosen." - "The Essene Path", Rev. Michael Robinson.

"The Essenes lived on the shores of lakes and rivers, away from cities and towns, and

practiced a communal way of life, sharing equally in everything. They were mainly

agriculturists and arboriculturists, having a vast knowledge of crops, soil and climatic

conditions which enabled them to grow a great variety of fruits and vegetables in

comparatively desert areas and with a minimum of labor." - Enoch to the Dead Sea

to distribute to the needy." - Enoch to the Dead Sea Scrolls, Edmond Szekely.

"Thou shalt not kill",' for life is given to all by God, and that which God has given, let not man take away. …. And the flesh of slain beasts in his body will become his own tomb. For I tell you truly, he who kills, kills himself, and whoso eats the flesh of slain beasts, eats of the body of death. For in his blood every drop of their blood turns to poison; in his breath their breath to stink; in his flesh their flesh to boils; in his bones their bones to chalk; in his bowels their bowels t o decay; in his eyes their eyes to scales; in his ears their ears to waxy issue. And their death will become his death. - The Essene Gospel of Peace.

Kill not, neither eat the flesh of your innocent prey, lest you become the slaves of Satan. For that is the path of sufferings and it leads unto death. But do the will of God, that his angels may serve you on the way of life. Obey, therefore, the words of God: 'Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is breath of life, I give every green herb for meat. - The Essene Gospel of Peace.

Emperor Constantine I gave preferential treatment to the Christian Church, gave it freedom of religion and in the year 324 finally made it de facto a state religion. For this, the church even made him a saint. However, in obsession with power, despotism and cruelty, Constantine lagged behind his predecessors in nothing. He waged many wars. Under threat of torture, the Early Christians who wanted to remain true to their pacifist ideals were now forced to go to war for the emperor. It was said that under the orders of Emperor Constantine, melted lead was poured down the throats of those who did not want to eat meat. “They should taste it and thus overcome themselves, if they wanted, but if they showed disdain not even to try the meat mixed with vegetables ... they should be removed from office.” (Quotation from Johannes Schümmer, The Old Christian Fasting Practice, Münster, 1933, p. 32).

Council of Nicösia (325) “Christians were now officially forced into military duty, into eating animals and drinking alcohol.” At the Council of Nicösia (325) Constantine forced through his ideas of Christianity. He tailored to fit the spirit of the times then. The “correctors” were deliberate falsifications of the Gospels were carried out at the Council of Nicösia.

Word of Counsel from the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH)

STATUS OF ANIMALS: All creatures on earth are sentient beings. "There is not an animal on earth, nor a bird that flies on its wings - but they are communities like you." (The Quran, 6:38)

It is not their flesh, nor their blood, that reaches Allah; it is your righteousness {piety and spiritual volition} that reaches Him….Their flesh will never reach Allah, nor yet their blood, but your devotion will reach Him (Qur'an 22:37).

COMPASSION TOWARDS ANIMALS: “When you will show mercy on an animal, God will show mercy on you.” —Al-Hakim

"The Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked by his companions if kindness to animals was rewarded in the life hereafter. He replied: 'Yes, there is a meritorious reward for kindness to every living creature'." (Bukhari) It comes under the saying of the Prophet(s) 'God has ordered us to be kind to everything' (Inna'l-laha Kataba-'l-ihsan 'ala kulle Shay'in). (The History of Azhar, Cairo; 1964; pp. 361-363)." 'Who has hurt the FEELINGS of this bird by taking its young? Return them to her'. (Narrated by Abdul Rahman bin Abdullah bin Mas'ud. Muslim. Also Awn (Ref. No. 32) Hadith No. 2658. Also "Guillaume' (Ref. No. 57); p. 106).

"a man once robbed some eggs from the nest of a bird. The Prophet(s) had them restored to the nest." (id).

'yes, there is a reward for acts of charity to every beast alive.' (Narrated by Abu Huraira, Bukhari,

3:322. Also Muslim, Vol. 4; Hadith No. 2244. Also Awn (Ref. No. 32), 7:222, Hadith No. 2533. Also Mishkat al-masabih,

Book 6; Chapter 6.

'A good deed done to a beast is as good as doing good to a human being; while an act of cruelty to a beast is as bad as an act of cruelty to human beings' and that: 'Kindness to animals was promised by rewards in Life Hereafter.' (Mishkat al-Masabih; Book 6; Chapter 7,

8:178.)

The Prophet(s) told his companions of a serf who was blessed by Allah for saving the life of a dog by giving it water to drink and quenching its thirst. (Narrated by Abu Huraira. Muslim,

Vol. 4, Hadith No. 2244. Also Bukhari, 3:322. Also Awn (Ref. No. 32); Hadith No. 2533, and others).

Hazrat A'ishah herself narrates: "I was riding a restive camel and turned it rather roughly. The Prophet(s) said to me: 'it behooves you to treat the animals gently'. (Narrated by A'ishah. Muslim, Vol. 4, Hadith No. 2593. Also Awn, 7:155, Hadith No. 2461; (Ref. No. 32)).

"The Prophet(s) was seen wiping the face of his horse with his gown (jullabiyah). When asked why he was doing that, he replied: 'Last night I had a reprimand from Allah

regarding my horse for having neglected him'. (Narrated by Yahya bin Said. "Malik bin Anas al-

Asbhahi". Also Al-Muwatta, (in English); Divan Press, Norwich, England; 1982; p. 205.)

"When we stopped at a halt, we did not say our prayers until we had taken the burdens off our camels' backs and attended to their needs." (Narrated by Anas. Awn (Ref. No. 32); 7:223;

Hadith aNo. 5234. Also 'Guillaume' (Ref. No. 57); pp.106, 107).

When you journey through a verdant land, {go slow to} let your camels graze. When you pass through an arid area, quicken your pace {lest hunger should enfeeble the animals}. Do not pitch your tents for the night on the beaten tracks, for they are the pathways of nocturnal creatures. (Narrated by Abu Huraira. Sahih Muslim - Kitab-ul-Imam (Ref. No. 53); Vol. III; Chapter

DCCVII; Hadith No. 4724; pp. 1062, 1063.

The Prophet(s) once passed by a lean camel whose belly had shrunk to its back. 'Fear God' he said to the owner of the camel, 'in these dumb animals and ride them only when they are fit to be ridden, and let them go free when it is meet that they should rest. (Narrated by Abdullah bin Ja'far. Awn (Ref. No. 32); 7:221; Hadith No. 2532).

PHYSICAL INJURY: "The Holy Prophet (PBUH) forbade the beating or the branding of animals. Once he saw a donkey branded on its face and said: 'may Allah condemn the one who branded it'." (Muslim) Jabir told that God's Messenger(s) forbade striking the face or branding on the face of animals…The same companion of the Holy Prophet(s) reported him as saying, when an ass which had been branded in its face passed him by: 'God curse the one who branded it.' (Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah. Muslim, Vol.3, Hadith No. 2116. Also Awn al-Ma'bud Sharh Abu Dawud (hereafter

referred to as Awn); 7:232, hadith No. 2547. Also The Lawful and Unlawful in Islam (in Arabic); Yusuf el-Kardawi; Mektebe Vahba, Cairo; 1977; p. 293. Also 'Robson' (Ref. No. 15); p. 872).

Narrated by Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah (r.a.a.): "The Messenger of Allah (s.a.s.) forbade tormenting any kind of animal to death." — Muslim

ANIMAL BAITING AND BLOOD SPORTS: Narrated by Ibn ‘Abbaas (r.a.a.): "The Prophet (s.a.s.) said: 'Do not take anything in which there is a soul as a target.' "

"The Holy Prophet (PBUH) forbade the setting up of animals to fight against each other." (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi) "The Holy Prophet (PBUH) condemned those who pinion or restrain animals in any other way for the purpose of target shooting. (Al-Masburah and Al-Mujaththamah)." (Muslim) The Prophet(s) condemned those people who take up anything alive as a mere sport." (Narrated by Abdullah bin 'Omar. Muslim, Vol. 3, Hadith No. 1958).

The Prophet(s) forbade blood sports, like the Bedouins. (Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Abbas. Awn, (Ref. No. 32); 8:15, Hadith No. 2603. Also 'Robson'; p. 876 (Ref. No. 15, but it does not mention 'Bedouins').

The Prophet said: 'Do not set up living creatures as a target'. (Narrated by Abdullah bin Abbas. Muslim Vol. 3, Hadith No. 1957. Also 'Robson'; p. 872 (Ref. No. 15).

The Prophet(s) condemned those who use a living creature as a target." (Narrated by Abdullah bin'Omar. Bukhari and Muslim. Also 'Robson' p. 872 (Ref. No. 15)).

The Prophet(s) forbade an animal being made a target." (Narrated by Anas. Recorded by Riyad. (Ref. No. 28); Hadith No. 1606; p. 272.

The Prophet(s) was reported as saying: 'Do not make anything having life as a target'." (Narrated by Ibn Abbas. Sahih Muslim - Kitab-us-Said Wa'dh-Dhaba'ih; Chapter DCCCXXII, Vol. III; Sh. Muhammad Ashraf, Lahore, Pakistan, 1976; Hadith No. 4813; p. 1079; (hereafter referred to as Kitab-us-Said).

The Prophet(s) passed by some children who were shooting arrows at a ram. He told them off, saying: 'do not maim the poor beast'." (Narrated by Abdallah bin Ja'far. An-Nasai, 7:238).

CAGING: "The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said: 'It is a great sin for man to imprison those animals which are in his power'." (Muslim) The Prophet(s) told his companions of a woman who would be sent to Hell for having locked up a cat; not feeding it, nor even releasing it so that it could feed herself."

(Narrated by Abdullah bin 'Omar. Bukhari, 4:337; recorded in Riyad (Ref. No. 28), Hadith No. 1605; p. 271. Also Muslim, Vol. 4, Hadith No. 2242. English translation by Abdul Hamid Siddiqi; Sh. Muhammad Ashraf, Lahore, Pakistan; 1976; Vol. 4, Hadith No. 5570; p. 1215. (According to the English translation, this Hadith was also narrated by the Abu Huraira and by Naqi who had heard it from Abdullah); Hadith No. 5573; p. 1215.) This Hadith has been recorded by almost all the authentic books of hadith, as the Re. No. 53 will show)

VIVISECTION:

There are numerous Islamic laws forbidding vivisection (Al-muthia) on a live animal. IBn Umar reported the Holy Prophet (PBUH) as having condemned those who mutilate any part of an animal’s body while it is alive. (Ahmad and other authorities) The Prophet(s) said: 'Do not clip the forelock of a horse, for decency is attached to its forelock; nor its mane, for it protects it; nor its tail, for it is its fly-flap'. (Narrated by 'Utbah ibn Farqad Abu Abdillah al-Sulami. Abu Dawud. Also Awn, 7:216, 217, Hadith No. 2525 (Ref. No. 32).

Counsel of Wisdom by Joseph Smith – (1805-1844)

In 1833 Joseph Smith, Jr. received by divine revelation of the health code that came to be known as the Word of Wisdom and was established to be part of a religious observance in the first place.

10 And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man— 11 Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving. 12 Yea, flesh also of [domestic] beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of [service of] man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly; 13 And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine. 14 All grain is ordained for the use of man and of beasts, to be the staff of life, not only for man but for the beasts of the field, and the fowls of heaven, and all wild animals that run or creep on the earth; 15 And these hath God made for the use of man only in times of famine and excess of hunger. 16 All grain is good for the food of man; as also the fruit of the vine; that which yieldeth fruit, whether in the ground or above the ground— 17 Nevertheless, wheat for man, and corn for the ox, and oats for the horse, and rye for the fowls and for swine, and for all beasts of the field, and barley for all useful animals, and for mild drinks, as also other grain. 18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones; 19 And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures; 20 And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint. 21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.

Counsel concerning Flesh Diet by Ellen Gould – (1827-1915)

Ellen Gould Harmon, a visionary woman of the 1800’s under the direction of Yah Allah, she was given extensive revelations concerning proper healthful diet and the danger behind the flesh diet.

Mental and Moral Effects Meat Eating -

461. If we subsist largely upon the flesh of dead animals, we shall partake of their nature.--Testimonies , V. II, p. 61.

462. A meat diet changes the disposition, and strengthens animalism. . . . To educate your children to subsist on a meat diet would be harmful to them.--Unpublished

Testimonies, Nov. 5, 1896.

463. Its use excites the animal propensities to increased activity, and strengthens the animal passions. When the animal propensities are increased, the intellectual and moral powers are decreased. The use of the flesh of animals . . . benumbs the fine sensibilities of the mind.--Testimonies , V. II, p. 63.

464. It is impossible for those who make free use of flesh meats to have an unclouded brain and an active intellect.--Testimonies , V. II, p. 62.

465. Eating much flesh will diminish intellectual activity. Students would accomplish much more in their studies if they never tasted meat. When the animal part of the human nature is strengthened by meat eating, the intellectual powers diminish proportionately.--Unpublished Testimonies, Nov. 5, 1896.

466. Meat eating deranges the system, beclouds the intellect, and blunts the moral sensibilities.-- Testimonies , V. II, p. 64.

467. Such a [meat] diet contaminates the blood and stimulates the lower passions.

It prevents vigor of thought and enfeebles the perceptions, so that God and the truth

are not understood.--Unpublished Testimonies, Jan. 11, 1897.

In order for us to enjoy the natural appetite, which will preserve health and prolong life,

God restricts the appetite. He says, Beware; restrain, deny unnatural appetite.--

Testimonies, V. III, p. 63, – Ellen Harmon.

Physical Effects Meat Eating -

443. We do not hesitate to say that flesh meat is not necessary for health or strength.-- Testimonies , Vol. II, p. 63.

444. One of the great errors that many insist upon is that muscular strength is dependent upon animal food. But the simple grains, fruits of the trees, and vegetables have all the nutritive properties necessary to make good blood. This a flesh diet cannot do.-- Unpublished Testimonies, Nov. 5, 1896.

445. Speaking in support of this diet, they said that without it they were weak in physical strength. But the words of our Teacher to us were, "As a man thinketh, so is he." The flesh of dead animals was not the original food for man. . . . Since the flood the human race has been shortening the period of its existence. Physical, mental, and moral degeneracy is rapidly increasing in these last days.-- Unpublished Testimonies, Jan. 11, 1897.

The eating of flesh meats has made a poor quality of blood and flesh. Your systems are in a state of inflammation, prepared to take on disease. You are liable to acute attacks of disease, and to sudden death, because you do not possess the strength of constitution to rally and resist disease.-- Testimonies, V. II, p. 61, – Ellen Harmon.

446. The weakness experienced on leaving off meat is one of the strongest arguments that I could present as a reason why you should discontinue its use. Those who eat meat feel stimulated after eating this food, and they suppose that they are made stronger. After they discontinue the use of meat, they may for a time feel weak, but when the system is cleansed from the effect of this diet, they no longer feel the weakness, and will cease to wish for that for which they have pleaded as essential to strength.-- Unpublished Testimonies, Aug. 30, 1896.

447. You may think that you cannot work without meat; I thought so once, but I know that in his original plan God did not provide for the use of the flesh of dead animals as a diet for man. It is a gross, perverted taste that will accept such food. To think of dead flesh rotting in the stomach is revolting.-- Unpublished Testimonies, Feb. 17, 1884.

449. The physical powers are depreciated by the habitual use of flesh meat. Meat eating deranges the system.-- Testimonies , Vol. II, p. 64.

450. The use of the flesh of animals tends to cause a grossness of the body.-- Testimonies , V. II, p. 63.

451. Their meat diet, which was supposed to be essential, was not necessary, and as they were composed of what they ate, brain, bone, and muscle were in an unwholesome condition because they lived on the flesh of dead animals. Their blood was being corrupted by this improper diet. The flesh which they ate was diseased, and their entire system was becoming gross and corrupted.-- Unpublished Testimonies, Aug. 30, 1896.

452. When we feed on flesh, the juices of what we eat pass into the circulation. A feverish condition is created, because the animals are diseased, and by partaking of their flesh we plant the seeds of disease in our own tissue and blood. Then, when exposed to the changes of a malarious atmosphere, to prevailing epidemics and contagious diseases, these are more sensibly felt, for the system is not in a condition to resist disease.-- Unpublished Testimonies, Nov. 5, 1896.

453. Because those who partake of animal food do not immediately feel its effects, is no evidence that it does not injure them. It may be doing its work surely upon the system, and yet the persons for the time being realize nothing of it.-- How to Live, Chap. 1, p. 59.

454. The liability to take disease is increased tenfold by meat eating.-- Testimonies , V. II, p. 64.

455. The practice of eating largely of meat is causing diseases of all kinds,--cancers, tumors, scrofula, tuberculosis, and other like affections.-- Unpublished Testimonies, Jan. 11, 1897.

456. The mortality caused by meat eating is not discerned. If it were, we should hear no arguments and excuses in favor of the indulgence of the appetite for dead flesh.-- Animals are diseased, and by partaking of their flesh we plant the seeds of disease in our

own tissues and blood.--Unpublished Testimonies, Nov. 5, 1896.

457. Her system is full of scrofulous humors from the eating of flesh meats. The use of swine's flesh in your family has imparted a bad quality of blood. -- Testimonies , V. II, p. 62.

458. Cancers, tumors, and various other inflammatory diseases are largely caused by meat eating. From the light which God has given me, the prevalence of cancers and tumors is largely due to gross living on dead flesh.--Unpublished Testimonies, Nov. 5, 1896.

459. Cancers, tumors, diseases of the lungs, the liver, and the kidneys, all exist in the animals that are used for food.--Unpublished Testimonies, March, 1896.

460. When a limb is broken, physicians, recommend their patients not to eat meat,

as there would be danger of inflammation's setting in.--Unpublished Testimonies, Nov.

5, 1896.

The prevalence of cancers and tumors is largely due to gross living on dead flesh.--Unpublished Testimonies, Nov. 5, 1896.

The practice of eating largely of meat is causing diseases of all kinds,--cancers, tumors, scrofula, tuberculosis, and numbers of other like affections.--Unpublished Testimonies, Jan. 11, 1897.

The meat is served reeking with fat, because it suits the perverted taste. Both the blood and the fat of animals is consumed as a luxury. But the Lord has given special directions that these should not be eaten. Why?--Because their use would make a diseased current of blood in the human system. Disregard of the Lord's special directions has brought a variety of difficulties and diseases upon human beings. . . . If they introduce into their system that which cannot make good flesh and blood, they must endure the results of the disregard of God's word.-- Unpublished Testimonies, March, 1896.

The eating of pork has aroused and strengthened a most deadly humor which was in the

system. --Testimonies, V. II, p. 94 – Ellen Harmon.

Cook meat with spices, and eat it with rich cakes and pies, and you have a bad quality

of blood. The system is too heavily taxed in disposing of this kind of food. The mince

pies and pickles, which should never find a place in any human stomach, will give a

miserable quality of blood. . . . Flesh meat and rich food and an impoverished diet will

produce the same results.-- Testimonies, V. II, p. 368 – Ellen Harmon.

Simple grains, fruits, and vegetables have all the nutrient properties necessary to make good blood. This a flesh diet cannot do.--Unpublished Testimonies, Nov. 5, 1896, – Ellen Harmon.

Meat is not essential for health or strength, else the Lord made a mistake when he

provided food for Adam and Eve before their fall. All the elements of nutrition are

contained in the fruits, vegetables, and grains.-- Review and Herald, 1883, No. 19 – Ellen

Harmon.

Flesh meats will depreciate the blood. Cook meat with spices, and eat it with rich cakes and pies, and you have a bad quality of blood. The system is too heavily taxed in disposing of this kind of food. --Testimonies, V. II. p. 368, – Ellen Harmon.

The eating of flesh meats has made a poor quality of blood and flesh. Your systems are in a state of inflammation, prepared to take on disease. You are liable to acute attacks of disease, and to sudden death, because you do not possess the strength of constitution to rally and resist disease.--Testimonies, V. II, p. 61 – Ellen Harmon.

Spiritual Effects of Meat Eating -

468. O, if everyone could discern these matters as they have been presented to me, those who are so careless, so indifferent in regard to their character building, those who plead for indulgence in a flesh meat diet, would never open their lips in justification of an appetite for the flesh of dead animals.--Unpublished Testimonies, Jan. 11, 1897.

469. A religious life can be more successfully attained and maintained if meat is

discarded; for this diet stimulates into intense activity the lustful propensities, and

enfeebles the moral and spiritual nature.--Unpublished Testimonies, Nov. 5, 1896.

Satan sees that he cannot have such a controlling power over us as he could if appetite

were indulged.--Testimonies, V. III, p. 569, – Ellen Harmon.

As our first parents lost Eden through the indulgence of appetite, our only hope of

regaining Eden is through the firm denial of appetite and passion. . . . The controlling

power of appetite will prove the ruin of thousands, when, if they had conquered on

this point, then they would have had the moral power to gain the victory over every

other temptation of Satan. But those who are slaves to appetite will fail in perfecting

believer’s character. . . . As we near the close of time, Satan's temptation to indulge

appetite will be more powerful and more difficult to overcome.--Testimonies, V. III, p.

491, – Ellen Harmon.

Diseased Meats,

470. The meat diet is a serious question. Shall human beings live on the flesh of dead animals? The answer, from the light that God has given, is, No, decidedly no. Our health institutions should educate on this question. . . . They should point out the increase of disease in the animal kingdom. The testimony of examiners is that very few animals are free from disease.--Unpublished Testimonies, Jan. 11, 1897.

471. Disease of every type is afflicting the human family, and it is largely the result

of subsisting on the diseased flesh of dead animals.--Unpublished Testimonies, March, 1896.

472. Those who subsist largely upon flesh cannot avoid eating the meat of animals which are to a greater or less degree diseased. The process of fitting the animals for market produces in them disease; and fitted in as healthful a manner as they can be, they become heated and diseased by driving before they reach the market. The fluids and flesh of these diseased animals are received directly into the blood, and pass into the circulation of the human body, becoming fluids and flesh of the same. Thus humors are introduced into the system. And if the person already has impure blood, it is greatly aggravated by eating of the flesh of these animals.--Testimonies , V. II, p. 64.

473. The very animals whose flesh you eat are frequently so diseased that, if left alone, they would die of themselves; but while the breath of life is in them, they are killed and brought to market. You take directly into your system humors and poisons of the worst kind, and yet you realize it not.--Testimonies , V. II, p. 405.

474. There are but few animals that are free from disease. Many have been made to suffer greatly for the want of light, pure air, and wholesome food. When they are fattened, they are often confined in close stables, and are not permitted to exercise, and to enjoy free circulation of air. Many poor animals are left to breathe the poison of filth which is left in barns and stables. Their lungs will not long remain healthy while inhaling such impurities. Disease is conveyed to the liver, and the entire system of the animal is diseased. They are killed, and prepared for the market, and people eat freely of this poisonous animal food. Much disease is caused in this manner. But the people cannot be made to believe that it is the meat they have eaten which has poisoned their blood, and caused their sufferings. Many die of disease caused wholly by meat eating, yet the world does not seem to be the wiser. . . . It may be doing its work surely upon the system, and yet the person for the time being realize nothing of it.--How to Live, Chap. 1, p. 59.

475. Animals are frequently killed that have been driven quite a distance to the slaughter. Their blood has become heated. They are of full flesh, and have been deprived of healthy exercise, and when they have to travel far, they become exhausted, and in that condition are killed for market. Their blood is highly inflamed, and those who eat of their meat, eat poison. Some are not immediately affected, while others are attacked with severe pain, and die from fever, cholera, or some unknown disease. . . . Some animals that are brought to the slaughter seem to realize what is to take place, and they become furious, and literally mad. They are killed while in this state, and their flesh is prepared for market. Their meat is poison, and has produced, in those who have eaten it, cramps, convulsions, apoplexy, and sudden death.--How to Live, Chap. 1, pp. 59, 60.

476. Swine have been prepared for market even while the plague was upon them, and their poisonous flesh has spread contagious diseases, and great mortality has followed.--How to Live, Chap. 1, p. 60.

477. Meat eating is doing its work, for the meat is diseased.--Unpublished Testimonies, Aug. 30, 1896.

478. The flesh which they ate was diseased, and their entire system was becoming gross and corrupted.--Unpublished Testimonies, Aug. 30, 1897.

479. Death was caused by the abundant eating of meat which at the last was tainted.--Unpublished Testimonies, Nov. 5, 1896.

480. Pulmonary diseases, cancers, and tumors are startlingly common among animals. It is true that the inspectors reject many cattle that are diseased, but many are passed on to the market that ought to have been refused. . . . Thus unwholesome flesh has gone on the market for human consumption. In many localities even fish is unwholesome, and ought not to be used. This is especially so where the fish come in contact with the sewerage of large cities. . . . The fish that partake of the filthy sewerage of the drains may pass into waters far distant from the sewerage, and be caught in localities where the water is pure and fresh; but because of the unwholesome drainage in which they have been feeding, they are not safe to eat.--Unpublished Testimonies, Jan. 19, 1895.

481. The fact that meat is largely diseased should lead us to make strenuous efforts to discontinue its use entirely. . . . It will be hard for some to do this, as hard as for the rum drinker to forsake his dram; but they will be better for the change.--Unpublished Testimonies, Nov. 9, 1896.

When we feed on flesh, the juices of what we eat pass into the circulation. A feverish

condition is created, because the animals are diseased; and by partaking of their flesh

we plant the seeds of disease in our own tissue and blood. Then, when exposed to the

feels their effects; it is not in a condition to resist disease.-- Unpublished Testimonies,

An Intelligent Decision.--As Daniel and his fellows were brought to the test; they placed themselves

fully on the side of righteousness and truth. They did not move capriciously, but intelligently. They

decided that as flesh-meat had not composed their diet in the past, it should not come into their diet in

the future, and as wine had been prohibited to all who should engage in the service of God, they

determined that they would not partake of it. The fate of the sons of Aaron had been presented before

them, and they knew that the use of wine would confuse their senses, that the indulgence of appetite

would be-cloud their powers of discernment. These particulars were placed on record in the history of

Understanding Manna – A Vegetarian Meal

The Torah introduces the story of the manna with the following Divine message which Moses was to convey to the Israelites in response to their concern about what they would eat in the desert:

Num 11:4 - Diet Modified Disposition, Activated Mind.--The state of the mind has largely

to do with the health of the body, and especially with the health of the digestive organs.

As a general thing, the Lord did not provide His people with flesh meat in the desert,

because He knew that the use of this diet would create disease and insubordination. In

order to modify the disposition, and bring the higher powers of the mind into active

exercise, He removed from them the flesh of dead animals. He gave them angel's food,

manna from heaven (MS 38, 1898). {1BC 1112.8}

According to Isaac Arama (1420-1494), author of Akedat Yitzchak, and others, after the Israelites left Egypt, God tried to establish another non- meat diet, manna. - See Rabbi Elijah J. Schochet, Animal Life in Jewish Tradition (New York: K'tav), 1984, p. 290; also see S. Clayman, "Vegetarianism, The Ideal of the Bible," The Jewish Vegetarian (Summer, 1967): 136- 137, and Hebenstreit, Kivrot Hata'avah, p. 7.

God said to Moses, "Behold! I shall rain down for you food from heaven; and the people

shall go out and gather a certain portion every day . . . “(Exod. 16:4).

Manna is described in the Torah as a vegetarian food, "like coriander seed" (Num. 11:7).

The rabbis of the Talmud stated that the manna had whatever taste and flavor the eater

desired at the time of eating. It must also have had sufficient nutrient value because

Moses stated that "It is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat" (Exod. 16:15).

Rabbi J. H. Hertz comments on the manna: "God in His ever-sustaining providence fed Israel's host during the weary years of wandering in His own unsearchable way." - Hertz,

Pentateuch and Haftorahs, p. 276.

A vegetarian diet was provided for the Children of Abraham: "They gathered out an omer, and he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; everyone according to his eating had they gathered" (Exodus 16:18).

The Children of Israel unsatisfied & complained of the diet of Manna

"Would that we were given flesh to eat." (Num. 11:4)

They said they remembered the fish and other good food that they believed they had

had in Egypt, but now they had only manna to eat. The Lord was very displeased and

Moses was displeased, as well. Finally, a storm of quail came into the camp, which was

brought by a wind from the sea. While the flesh was in their mouths, before it was

chewed, the anger of God was kindled against the people; He struck them with a great

plague (Num. 11:4-33).

The Lessons of Manna: (1) God knows the best for humanity and provides for our needs; manna was available

for each day's requirements. (2) God wanted the people to be sustained on manna diet; He was very displeased

when they cried for flesh to eat.

(3) The plague broke out among the people and this incident was a result of breaking the law of nature and taught the people that they should not eat meat, and if they

did, it would have very negative consequences to their body.

THOU SHALT NOT KILL The exact Hebrew wording of this biblical phrase is lo tirtzack. One of the greatest scholars of Hebrew/English linguistics (in the Twentieth Century) -Dr. Reuben Alcalay - has written in his mammoth book the Complete Hebrew /English Dictionary that "tirtzach" refers to "any kind of killing whatsoever." The word "lo," as you might suspect, means "thou shalt not."
