Mr. Quast, Mr. Trozzi and some fourth grade students got to school early on Friday, November 30 to pack the bus with the toys and take them to Robinson Township where they were donated to the 96.1 KISS Stuff-A-Bus toy drive. In addition to the recently completed food drive at South Park Middle School, students who attended the Allegheny County Camp Cadet last summer, with the help of Mr. Chris Stoicovy, led the Sweats for Vets collection. In total, 104 sweatshirts were collected in just four days for veterans in our area. The generosity of South Park grows every year. Thank you to those who contributed! DATES TO REMEMBER

THE SEASON OF GIVING:SOUTH PARK SCHOOLS HELP THOSE IN NEED

The holiday season has just started; however, South Park students already have made a difference in our community by making the holidays a little brighter for those in need.

At South Park High School, students, faculty, staff and community members donated hundreds of toys for local children. The gift collection is led by the Interact Club and sponsors Mr. Mike Surovchak and Mrs. Christine Weston. Members of the Interact Club, along with Mr. Surovchak and Mrs. Weston, loaded a bus with the presents on Thursday, November 29 to donate them to children in our area who are in need.

THANKSGIVING PROVIDES LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS

HIGH SCHOOL MAKES DONATION TO TREE OF LIFE SYNAGOGUEIn light of the recent tragedy at Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill, South Park High School students decided to collect and donate money for the victims’ families and Tree of Life Synagogue. Junior class president Danielle DeProspo launched the idea into immediate action when she proposed it to the student council on the Monday following the tragedy.

Danielle’s action brought about an impressive response from the student body. The high school students were able to raise $535 for the families and Tree of Life Synagogue. An additional $1,000 is being donated from the South Park High School Student Council. The money was donated through Pittsburgh Gives, a nonprofit organization.

Second grade students used their creativity to create colorful holiday cards recently. Those cards will be sent to children in need in Africa, Australia and Uganda.

STUDENTS’ HOLIDAY CARDS TO BE SENT THOUSANDS OF MILES FROM SOUTH PARK

Students in Mrs. Baldigowski’s social studies classes spent the days before Thanksgiving learning about the holiday. The sixth graders explored a virtual tour of Ellis Island and learned about the obstacles many immigrants faced coming to America.

The students also explored a web quest of the first Thanksgiving where students had to find facts based on primary source documents. The students used the skills of historians to peel away the layers of myth and misconception surrounding the “First Thanksgiving” and to discover what may have really happened during the fall of 1621.

Students also reflected on their own lives and the many areas for which they could be thankful. Students shared traditions surrounding the holiday in their families and the people and things for which they are most thankful. Students composed letters of thanks to a family member to be personally delivered on the Thanksgiving holiday to culminate the week’s activities.

ARTIST VISITS SOUTH PARK MIDDLE SCHOOL MURAL CLUB STUDENTS

Artist Bernie Wilke visited members of the South Park Middle School Mural Club on Wednesday, November 28. Wilke shared his views on the importance of art with the students. He also discussed his artwork and his artistic process for creating a mural.

Wilke also led a group drawing activity with the students around the topics of growth and change in a community.
