The Season of Advent November 30, 2014 9:30 AM
The season of Advent is a time of reflection on the gift that comes at Christmas and an anticipation of the Second coming of Christ.
Today the color on the altar and on the banners is blue. Advent, a preparatory time of waiting and watching, communicates the message of hope. Our Christian faith rests on the hope that Christ, who came in history assuming our flesh, will also return on the last
day of time from that same blue sky he ascended into long ago. Blue, the color of the sky, helps convey that powerful message.
PASTORAL WELCOME
We also welcome today those joining our service via our Live Web Stream on the Internet.
SHARING OF GOD’S PEACE
GATHERING HYMN “The Advent of Our King” LSB #331
We focus on the Processional Cross and Light as they are brought forward in worship, symbolizing the presence of Jesus among us.
INVOCATION
P: We gather in the Name of the Father and of the Son and
of The Holy Spirit.
C: Amen!
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the
truth is not in us.
C: But if we confess our sins, God , who is faithful and
just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all
unrighteousness. 1 John 1: 8-9
A Time of Silence for Personal Confession
P: Holy and gracious God,
C: I confess that I have sinned against You. Some of my sins I
know - the thoughts and words and deeds of which I am
ashamed - but some are known only to You. In the name of
Jesus Christ, I ask forgiveness. Deliver and restore me that I
may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of
Your Holy name. Amen.
About the Service
Processional Cross: These
crosses have been used since the 4th
century. They signal the focus of our worship and the
presence of Christ as we gather and
depart.
Confession: An acknowledgment
of sorrow for those things that
we have done contrary to God’s
will.
Readings: Each worship service is
grounded in scripture.
Readings are appointed to be read each week. The collection of
readings is known as the
“lectionary.”
2
Why 3 Readings? It is customary to
have three readings: One from the Old
Testament, one from the New
Testament and one from the
Gospels.
Prayers: The prayers are
intercessions offered to God
on behalf of the Church, the
world, and of all people.
Creeds: There are 3 ecumenical
statements of faith. They date
from the 4th century.
Offering: Throughout scripture the
people of God gave their first
fruits or the best of the harvest to
the Lord. Your offerings ensure the mission and ministry of the Lord continues
in this place. Thank you!
P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to
die for you, and for His sake forgives you all our sins. As
a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His
authority, I forgive you all of your sins in the name of the
Father, and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen!

SENDING HYMN “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” LSB #357 (Verses 1, 3, 5, 7)
Pastor: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord!
People: Thanks be to God!
Scripture: The English Standard Version, All music reprinted with permission. CCLI #1533343.
Hymns: “Hymn” comes from the
Greek for Song of Praise. We sing
praise to the Lord for He is good and His love
endures forever.
Why is singing
such a important part of our
worship? Singing has been part of worshipping God for thousands of
years. Paul shares in the New Testament:
Ephesians 5: 19: speaking to one
another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing and making melody
with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ to
God.
Benediction: Latin for blessing. The benediction
is a way of bestowing God’s blessings on all
gathered as they prepare to leave.

Service 1 (Peace of Christ) is based around Isaiah 40:1-2 and highlights for us that true peace comes only through Jesus Christ and the forgiveness that he brings. He is our one and
only Prince of Peace.

FEAST DAY
St. Andrew, Apostle
November 30th
This feast was observed in the fourth century by the Eastern church and in the sixth century in Rome and elsewhere. Andrew and John were the first apostles to follow Christ (John 1:35–40), and the former’s name always appears next to the first three in the lists of the apostles. After Pentecost he is supposed to have preached in Palestine, Scythia, Epirus, and Thrace, and the Greek church particularly held him in him honor. Tradition states that he was martyred November 30 on a special kind of cross which has ever since borne his name, and that his body, together with that of St. Luke, was taken to the church of the Holy Apostles, Constantinople (A.D. 357), and later removed (A.D. 1210) to Amalfi in Italy. Quite early, certain of his relics were taken to St. Andrew’s church, Fife, and Andrew thus became the patron saint of Scotland. Prayer of the Day for St. Andrew, Apostle: Almighty God, as the apostle Andrew readily obeyed the call of Christ and followed him without delay, grant that we, called by your Holy Word, may in glad obedience offer ourselves to your service; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
