The sea, landscapes, canneries, dryers, fish markets, lighthouses, handicraft, pilgrimage shrines and its people. They are some examples of what you will be offered along this route through the heart of Costa da Morte. You will get to know first-hand from one of the three female lighthouse keepers in Spain the importance of their labour in one of the coasts with more shipwrecks in the world. You shall stroll along the streets and admire the colorful houses of the coastal villages of great fishing tradition. You will be told of legends, traditions and customs, as old as curious. And you will conclude the day totally amazed with the sunsets over Western Europe, at the time that fishermen cast their nets to the "sea of ink water" and then giving way to total darkness, only lit by the stars, when the "burning light", is seen as if it were the blazing sea. In the village of Camelle you will see the Eden of fantasy and solitude of Manfred Gnädinger, a German who came to Camelle in the 1960s, and settled in a small house in the breakwater of Camelle, where he lived until his death in total communion with nature. Manfred died a few days after the shipwreck of the Prestige and the environmental disaster that triggered. In the museum dedicated to his work, built from crebas (remains bringing the sea), you will get to see his own view that this singular artist had of this coast and the sea. Do come in and be mesmerized by his spectacular work!

During your visit to Cabo Vilán, you will discover the intimate relationship between this coastal area with shipwrecks, from the hand of one of the first three female lighthouse keepers (the fareras) in Spain. Through a guided tour to the lighthouse, you will see what the work is about and the particularities. You will also visit the Information Centre of the shipwrecks, the lighthouses and the maritime signals, where you will learn more about the history of this essential resource.

CAMARIÑAS AND THE MUSEUM OF BOBBIN LACE

In addition to the marine environment and the landscape of the Costa da Morte, the best-known aspect of the Camariñas village is the handmade bobbin lace work. Within its urban core is the The Lacework Museum (Museo do Encaixe). Visit it! It has two exhibition halls on the bobbin lacework, where you will see both the processed products from various periods, as well as a number of utensils and materials that are used.

And before any canning processing existed there was the drying one! In Muxía, you will get to know how the people learned to turn the persistent wind from the Northeast into their main co-worker. There, next to the seashore, you will see the last handmade dryers which are still in use for drying the conger eel. Come and see them! If the wind blows, the eel pieces will move as sheets hung on a line. Here, the town smells a little more like the sea!

And you cannot miss, at the entrance of the Camariñas estuary, the Virxe da Barca Shrine, a place full of legends surrounded by other elements, such as the set of stones symbolizing boat parts. As legend goes, Virgin reached the area on a boat, thus the symbology of those stones (Pedra dos Cadrís, Pedra de Abalar...). Be enveloped by their stories and mystery. Get to know emblematic places such as the Punta da Barca, the Dryers’ Shrine, and enjoy the sea atmosphere as well as the beaches.

And before saying farewell to Muxía you cannot pass up the opportunity to get to the Touriñán Cape, the westernmost point of Galicia and of the Peninsular Spain. Finally, in this beautiful fishing village you will be able to visit the old San Carlos Castle, now converted into a Museum of the Sea. A small exhibition will help you understand the Galician fishing all over the world to the present day. And, your guide, a retired former diver, will introduce to you the patrimonial, cultural and ethnographic value that was generated around the exploitation of marine resources in the area, as well as the evolution of the different techniques of extraction and fishing, some of which, continue to be used today. Can you tell why the Octopus enters the clay pots that serve as traps? Listen carefully to his evocative explanations, and sure you shall discover a lot of things that you had no idea of. In addition, if you have time go to the Fisterra lighthouse. It is probably one of the most visited on the continent due to the connection with Santiago’s Way (Camino de Santiago), considered to be the final point of the Camino. That is the end of the world!

VILLAGE OF FINISTERRE

FISTERRA´S HARBOUR AND FISHMARKET

The Fisterra Harbour is the one with biggest activity of the village and its market place, the first tourist one in Galicia. Enjoy the views of a small coastal fleet, which uses different fishing gear. At any time of the day you walk by the Harbour, you will find fishermen who are either going fishing or coming back from fishing. Or, they will be repairing their nets or at the fish market auctions. Try to decipher what you see and hear, and guess who will get the best price. You will be amazed by the language and codes involved in this traditional auction!
