The Coalition of Homeschoolers across Lancaster County (CHALC) is an umbrella organization serving homeschool groups, with a combined count of over 600 families. CHALC publishes this online newsletter in which member homeschool groups advertise their activities, such as field trips, meetings, and learning cooperatives. CHALC also provides liability insurance for publicized activities, a web site for each group, leadership breakfasts and other events, as well as a variety of discounts.

Over the years, CHALC has strived to pass along accurate information of interest to the homeschool community, including educational developments, legislative bills, and local resources. CHALC endeavors to encourage homeschool families by sponsoring the annual CHALC graduation, publishing homeschool family experiences, and recognizing student achievement in The Scrawls.

The various positions on the CHALC Board are filled by fellow volunteer homeschool parents. If you would like to learn more about the Board and it’s activities, please contact us at [email protected].

CHALC Homeschool Group Membership for the 2019/2020 school year is just $25 a family! If a family is in more than one CHALC homeschool group a rebate is offered.

LITITZ HOME EDUCATORSCATORS

Lititz Home Educators (LHE) is a Christian field trip community that is open to any home-schooling or cyber-schooling family from the Lancaster area. We are a dedicated group of families who connect by supporting each other on our journeys, fostering friendships among the children and nurturing connections between families by experiencing life and lessons together. Our group is founded on Jesus’ example of servanthood, and every LHE family contributes by hosting an activity such as a field trip, a class, a show-and-tell, a park day, a mother’s gathering or an experience that brings joy to your family and that you would want to share with ours. Many of our activities occur in the northern and eastern areas of Lancaster County, but LHE welcomes families from anywhere. Membership in LHE offers the benefits of asking questions from seasoned homeschooling families, finding resources, buying/selling/borrowing, and discovering opportunities. Please consider gathering with us for encouragement and to strengthen connections. For detailed information about becoming a member, please contact Jill Gormley at [email protected] or visit our website.

Book Club & Presentation Time

All ages are welcome! We hope this group will allow your family to bond over literature and find friendship and community with other like-minded home educating families. Children (& parents!) may dress up as the book characters and are welcome to bring snacks relative to the book. Books should be read prior to the gatherings. In addition to book discussion and narration, time is provided for the children to practice public speaking or performing while presenting any projects they’ve been working on in any area of study. Please sign up via the LHE website calendar. All location details will be listed there as well. Email [email protected] with any questions.

Friendship Community Service Project: Carnival Night

Calling all families...this is an opportunity to serve our community in a fun way! I am organizing a Carnival Game Night for the intellectually disabled individuals at Friendship Community (FC). Our mission will be to provide and supervise easy games for the individuals to enjoy (for example: beach ball bowling, water sponge toss, potato and spoon races, etc.). The Team Members who work with the individuals will be responsible for assisting them. This will be an outdoor event at the main FC Campus (1149 E. Oregon Rd., Lititz) on Monday July 13th at 6:30pm (back-up date: July 27th). Please contact Jill to sign up: [email protected].

Bible Quizzing

Interested in joining Bible Quizzing for the 2020-21 school year? If your pre-teen/teen enjoys memorization and good-natured competition, they will enjoy quizzing! For more information about joining a quiz team or starting a team of your own, contact Debbie Spangler at [email protected]. Watch for details for 2019-20 End of year Dessert/Awards Celebration – Date and location TBD

Annual LHE Informational Meeting

Join us on June 25th from 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm as we discuss our plans for the upcoming school year, membership contribution requirements, and spend time reconnecting with each other. The meeting

is for parents only (nursing babies welcome, of course). See LHE calendar for location details.

Our Groups: M.A.C.H.

Elementary Students:

• Receive teaching of history from K- 6th grade, with a 4th grade emphasis on PA History. • Are taught all areas of science, with class time ded-icated to lab work, “hands-on-activities”, and special in-depth unit studies. • Participate in year-long gym classes, and are in-structed in a variety of group sports, learning team-work, listening skills, coordination, and agility. At-home physical fitness is also encouraged. Log sheets and tests are optional but make great additions to the homeschool portfolio. • In addition to the morning classes of history, sci-ence, and gym, students may choose to participate in afternoon electives such as art, life skills, Lego club, music, and drama.

Junior & Senior High Students:

• Students completing our regular rotation of morn-ing courses, will receive all the credits needed to fulfill the homeschool law in the area of Science, English, and Social Studies. • Areas of science which are taught: Earth Science, Life Science, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology • Social Studies rotation includes: Early American History, Renaissance & Reformation, World Geography, Modern World History with World Religions, Personal Finance (economics), Government/Civics, & Psychology. • Our English rotation includes a strong writing com-ponent in the junior high years, including instruction in writing a research paper. Grade appropriate novels are read and analyzed. Students will also learn speech skills and give oral presentation. High school students rotate through the following three courses: English with an American Literature emphasis, English with a British Literature emphasis, and English with a World Literature Emphasis. High schoolers will continue to sharpen their written communication skills, as well as their oral communication skills through both individ-ual and group presentations. • Students may participate in additional afternoon electives, such as art, debate, volleyball, and music/dra-ma. Math classes are also available at this level.

What does this mean for you as a parent?

Having a continuous rotation of classes gives par-ents the assurance their student is receiving all the teaching and instruction needed to fulfill the homeschool law. It helps eliminate the guess-work and stress of wondering if your child is learning all they need to know!

Those interested in pursuing membership with MACH should contact our New Member

Coordinator, Kim Groff ([email protected] or 717-572-3821) or can visit our website:

Did you know, last June, Pennsylvania passed House Bill 1615, which changes the compulsory school age from ages 8-17 to ages 6-18? Beginning in the 2020/2021 school year, homeschool parents will need to provide an affidavit, compile a portfolio, and have an evaluation done for any child 6 years or older. At MACH we provide academic classes for all ages. Our classes are on a scheduled rotational basis, so you know your child will receive all the necessary training in science, history, physical education, and in the secondary grades, English Writing & Literature. Elementary Classes Elementary classes vary from year to year. Our member's interests and tal-ents dictate the subjects and topics taught. Our elementary classes are designed to supplement your home curriculum--not replace it. Therefore, most of the work will be done in class. Our upper level classes include "for credit" academic courses as well as "enrichment" options.

Elementary classes are only available through co-op track membership.

Anatomy & Physiology with Leigh Ann Rohrer (Spring Semester, 9th-12th grades) Concepts covered in this class will include terminology, anatomy (structures) and physiology (functions) of the human body. A&P will provide a basis for understanding how changes in structure and function can lead to injury and disease. Practical and hands on labs to help students understand how our bodies work. Prerequisite: Biology (may be taking biology concurrently)

Chemistry with Mark Campbell (Year-long, 9th –12th grades) This high school level course will be designed to give a broad sampling of the subject of chemistry and its importance in every-day life. Key aspects of chemistry such as atomic structure, stoichiometry, gas laws, and acids/bases will be covered. The course will also include lab work, lab reports, weekly homework assignments, and four tests in order to gain a full understanding of the material. The goal for this course will be to give a full sampling of all that Chemistry has to offer to every student, while still pre-paring any student interested in pursuing a college degree in the sciences with a good base for taking future college courses. We will use PDESAS standards as a guide for content and discuss the compatibility of science and scripture. We will, as much as pos-sible, individualize instruction to meet each student's needs and abilities. Church History (Part 1 & 2) with Ellen Campbell (Fall, Spring or Year-long, 7th-12th grades) This course will begin with events leading up to the birth of Jesus and will continue until present day. We will cover a variety of influential people, documents, and decisions that pertain to the history of Christendom. Students will be expected to be pre-pared to participate in weekly discussions on the historical topics and take short notes on the provided note sheets. There will be several projects assigned throughout the semester such as two short research papers and presentations. There will be two tests each semester. French Foundations 1st Year with Rachel Vos (Year-long, 7th-12th grades) “VENCH”-URE INTO FRENCH! Beginning-level French, Laying a Solid Foundation through Real Communication and Step-by-step Understanding: Learning a foreign language enriches us in many ways, from brain-building to character-building. It gives us an important window into other cultures, which in turn helps give perspective and insight into our own language and culture. French is a great choice, not only because it is a beautiful language, but also because it is used world-wide, spoken in 53 countries. In this class, students will: develop a love for language in general, gain confidence in speaking a foreign language, develop cultural awareness, and begin to communicate with people who ‘live in French’ rather than English Introduction to Meteorology with Ian Turner (Fall semester, 11th-12th grades) The course will start with a review of the atmosphere and how it works relating to weather. Then we'll discuss topics such as temperature, humidity, condensation and types of precipitation. The next section will focus on wind and air pressure, and cover topics such as the role of the jet stream and global wind patterns. Subsequent sections of the course will focus on weather fronts, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes. We'll conclude with a study of the Earth's climate, weather forecasting, and a review of weather patterns in Pennsylvania. Spanish I with Kimberly Paine (Year-long, 9th-12th grades) This is a high school level Spanish 1 course. We will use AOP Spanish 1 Lifepacs. The AOP curriculum is a grammar-based work-book series that interweaves listening and speaking practice by native Spanish speakers with the grammar exercises.
