The construction industry touches every part of Scotland’s economy, our communities and society. It shapes the quality of our environment; our schools, hospitals, homes, roads and railways, the places in which we live and work.

The industry makes a huge contribution to Scotland’s economy in its own right, generating £21.4billion per year, and is also an important driver of the wider economy due to its impact on other sectors.

Importance to Scotland:

Employed: 170,000 (10% of total Scottish jobs)•

Businesses: 31,000•

GDP: £21.4billion•

GVA: £8.7billion (10% of Scotland’s GVA)•

Multiplier: for every £1 spent on construction output, a further £2.94 is generated in the economy•

Top 5 markets: UK, Western Europe, Middle East, USA, Canada•

Sources: SQW/ONS/CS Survey

The current and future challenges facing the construction sector are significant. Now more than ever, there is a need for industry to come together and work collaboratively to overcome the many problems which exist. Construction Scotland has undertaken the role of providing a single voice for the industry which will demonstrate a unity and focus for the sector as it develops in the coming years.

The structure of Construction Scotland is intended to be flexible and fluid. This is important in its communications with Scottish Government, the industry organisations, academia and research. In order to address the objectives of the Industry Strategy, Construction Scotland uses its position to ensure that all stakeholders are involved in its operations at the relevant levels, and in its communications across the sector. The Industry Strategy is owned by Construction Scotland, and therefore the industry as a whole. It is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure that the Scottish Construction Industry delivers against the objectives of the strategy.

Peer to peer equipment hire P2PLocal is the first website platform of its kind: an online technological and legal contracting solution to facilitate peer to peer hiring of under-utilised equipment, machinery, plant, and other resources between businesses.

Research indicates that equipment, machinery, and other resources are being under-utilised and are therefore unlikely to be providing an adequate return on investment or value for money.

Ecobuild 2014 marks the first official public launch of P2PLocal, and we want to introduce this innovative technology to like-minded businesses who are interested in new or alternative solutions to improve efficiency, sustainability, and more responsible business operations.

How it works (in just a few clicks)

Owner lists equipment•

Hirer selects equipment and submits offer•

Owner accepts offer•

P2PLocal concludes contract•

Service Description

P2PLocal features and potential benefits include:

easy access• to equipment listings arranged by industry sector, equipment category, manufacturer, and location (postcode)

helping the Construction sector improve overall efficiency• , sustainability, and promote more responsible business operations by maximising use of under-utilised equipment, machinery and other resources

helping owners achieve a greater return• on investment by minimising idle time, increasing usage rates, and generating revenue to offset against fixed overheads such as maintenance and storage costs

opening up new markets• / project opportunities for hirers restricted by a lack of access to specialist equipment

helping hirers reduce the risk• of project delays and down-time by providing 24/7 access* to the member listings database

simple “traffic-light” real-time availabilit• y checks using the P2PLocal integrated calendar

greater control over project challenges• such as equipment delivery timings and costs using the P2PLocal interactive map-based location finder

reducing project carbon footprint• by increasing the potential for more localised delivery

managing legal and practical risk• through the use of standardised legal terms and conditions governing hire contracts which can be reviewed in advance and personalised with members’ supplementary terms

helping the Construction industry to collaborate• in a more effective way through the use of feedback, discussions, and suggestions for continuous improvement using the integrated, members-only discussion forum.

ReAqua Systems

Reaqua Systems have developed a simple and effective proven product which reduces domestic and commercial water consumption by 30%. Very simply, the system collects greywater from baths and showers, passes it through a filtration and disinfectant process, then reuses it for flushing toilets.

The reAqua system has two variants:

the • reAqua which is a greywater filtration and reuse system

the • reAqua+ which offers the additional benefit of reduced energy bills by recovering the heat from the greywater prior to flushing. A heat exchanger in the tank extracts heat which can be used to pre warm the cold feed to a combi-boiler or conventional hot-water cylinder. This reduces demand on the existing central-heating system.

Products List:

reAqua+ (Gravity Feed Toilet) - Main Unit (without distribution pump), reAqua Clean 10L, Wall Brackets, 8L Expansion Tank, Pressure Gauge, Remote LED, Heat Exchanger & Supporting Legs

reAqua+ (Distribution Pump) - Main Unit (with distribution pump), reAqua Clean 10L, Wall Brackets, 8L Expansion Tank, Pressure Gauge, Remote LED, Heat Exchanger & Supporting Legs

In addition to loose joist floors, we offer a range of floor cassette solutions, in open, closed and insulated formats. Solutions include pre-fitted insulation, edge wrapped cassettes and pre-formed service holes, which ensure the building fabric performs and is easy to build.

Separating floor solutions

We offer a range of pre-assembled floor cassette build ups with decking and a range of floating floor treatments.

Roof solutions

We offer a variety of roof solutions, to suit the varying needs of individual projects, roof shapes and performance requirements. Our conventional trussed roof system utilises conventional roof trusses, gable panels and verge ladder frames. These come prefabricated, complete with all structural fixings and bracing requirements.

Party wall spandrel panels can be presheeted with limited combustibility boards easing installation of plasterboards within the roof spaces. We also offer ceiling cassette systems such as our horizontal ceiling cassette system. This is particularly attractive for fast completions, roof mounted equipment and room-in-roof options.

Continued pressure to reduce energy usage and the cost of energy at home and work, has resulted in the development of many unique innovations. Not the least of these is a high power heat battery from Sunamp that is between 4 and 16 times smaller than hot water thermal stores, and delivers space heating and hot water on-demand.

Sunamp was formed to respond to the need for low to zero-carbon heating, cooling and hot water systems in both domestic and commercial Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) applications. The Sunamp patented high power heat battery has many benefits:

Stack to fit any space and are fully configurable, upgradeable and •super-compact

Ideal for storing heat from heat pumps, solar thermal, biomass •boilers, conventional boilers and combined heat and power

Cost-efficient, being priced to compete with hot water thermal •store-based systems and reduces the cost of operation below current systems

More responsive than hot water thermal stores, deliver hot water •more quickly to the tap and respond quickly to a heating system’s ‘call for heat’

As a result, these high efficiency heat energy stores can deliver considerable energy savings in both domestic and commercial environments.

Sunamp is currently providing systems using its Heat Batteries to trial customers, utilities and major own-equipment-manufacturers for evaluation.

Ecobuild 2014 is the launch event for Sunamp’s ground breaking PV Heat Battery, which for the first time offers customers with PV and a combi boiler a way to save gas using free electricity from their roof.

Thermaflow

THERMAflow Ltd is based in Cumbernauld, Glasgow and was formed in 2004 to provide a solution to rising energy costs. Combining tried and tested technologies with innovative design we have created a range of unique electric combi boilers have become the most efficient type of electric storage system available. Our products have unique renewable energy options and have been fitted by a diverse range of customers throughout the UK. The company, which has 29 European patents, is also seeking to extend its business to international markets.

Product List:

Electric Combi Boilers

Solar Central Heating and Hot Water systems

All models are 100% efficient and are easy to install, easy to maintain

When used with cheaper off peak tariffs such as the E10/Economy 2000/E7 tariffs, our products achieve significantly lower running costs compared to other electric boilers on the market.

Uniquely all models link with solar thermal and wood burning systems to provide both hot water and space heating. The development of solar energy in particular is a major boost to the company’s business, and it now produces a full range of Solar Central Heating and Hot Water packages.

Our products also link to micro wind turbines to store and convert energy.

By storing cheaper rate energy (or free solar energy) efficiently for use when required, Thermaflow’s boilers reduce running costs and energy use.

The Thermaflow boiler is the outstanding alternative especially in off gas areas or when having to replace obsolete electric boilers. Cleaner and more efficient than Oil, LPG, and Solid Fuel systems, it is the most efficient type of electric storage system available.

With the vessel guaranteed for 25 years our products are designed to last 2 or 3 times longer than most gas or electric boilers, making them a great investment, especially for Social Landlords, Building Contractors.

The company model range covers properties from 1 bedroom apartments to 5 bedroom houses. We expect to launch 6 light commercial 3 phase models in 2014.

Val-U-ThermVal-U-Therm is the hybrid closed-panel building solution delivering exceptional thermal insulation and class-leading environmental sustainability in a cost-effective package. Jointly developed by two of Scotland’s largest timber frame manufacturers Walker Timber & Scotframe, Val-U-Therm utilises the best of SIPS and timber frame technology combined with advanced materials science.

Over 2,000 homes have been built using Val-U-Therm since its launch on 1st June 2011. It has been used for a broad spectrum of size and performance including one-off homes, schools and small to large volume private & affordable developments.

By sharing its R&D costs between many factories, Val-U-Therm offers highly cost-effective load-bearing structural envelope solutions with thermal insulation having a lambda declared of 0.025 W/mK providing U-values ranging from 0.09 to 0.23 W/m2K. This factory injected and quality controlled insulation is derived from recycled, renewable vegetable oil. The building system is third-party accredited under BBA certificate number 12/4892 and will last for the life of the building, durable for a minimum 60 years.

Val-U-Therm has a network of three factories manufacturing the product and 15 sales offices offering UK-wide service. Val-U-Therm will contribute towards providing solutions for ‘A’ rated Energy Performance Certificates, the new Fabric Energy Efficiency Standard, the highest levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes and PassivHaus. Delivering proven, future-proof solutions for low and zero carbon buildings is at the very core of our business activity.

Products List:

Wall Panels - external wall panels providing a structurally robust, easy-erect, high-value load-bearing solution. A wide range of panel sizes are available and windows, external doors and other elements can be factory fitted. The walls can be adapted to any architectural style (even curved walls) and used with any external treatment or internal finish.

Floor Panels - a 21st century version of the traditional, timber suspended ground floor. They allow long floor spans and provide a highly-insulated solution that is cost-competitive when compared with low U-value masonry systems.

Roof Panels - provide a very high-performance solution for both flat and pitched roofs. They can achieve long unsupported spans of up to 12m and the conventional vaulted ridge-to-eaves configuration. They are ideal for room-in-the-roof designs where the goal is to maximise floor space and create higher-than-standard ceiling heights.

Fire Mitigation - A new special version of Val-U-Therm for fire resistance during construction has been independently tested by HSE/STA and achieved the best Category C result.

Infill Panels - Val-U-Therm panels can also be used as high performance in-fill panels in any other building system such as concrete frame, steel frame, etc.
