Jewel Sturgis’ Inspiring Story of Determination and StrengthThe Passion That Drives August26thwillbeadaythatJewelSturgis,aWestsidesophomoreandshootingguardforthevarsitybasketballteam,willneverforget.Itwasadaythatchangedherlife.Itwasalsoadaythathasgivenheranewstrengththatwilllikelyneverfadeaway.

JewelSturgisisarisingbasketballstarintheCSRA.ShehasbeennoticedandrecognizedbymanyintheCSRA.TheScorenoticedJewelandherimpressivestatsinAugustofthisyear.Weoriginallyweregoingtodoastoryonherplayandhowshehasbeenabletorackupthestatsthatshealreadyhasaccumulatedinherfreshmenyear.Whenwecalledtodotheinterviewwefoundoutthatshewasinthehospital.

Jewelhasplayedbasketballsinceshewasinthe1stgrade.Shesaysthatshestartedplay-ingbecauseofheruncle.“InfirstgrademyUncleMickeyusedtotakemeoutsideandweplayedbasketballallthetime.Iwantedtobeathim,becausehewouldalwaysbeatme,soIstartedprac-ticingtogetbetter.”AccordingtoJewel,ittookseveralyearsforthatdreamtocometrue.Asshepracticedshefoundinspirationinawell-knownbasketballfigure.“IlikedtowatchMichaelJordanplayandafterseeingwhatheaccomplishedafterbeingcuthissophomoreyearfromhisvarsityteam,Ijustalwayswantedtobelikehim.”ShemovedonfrompickupballwithheruncletoplayingforIm-maculateConceptionandthenWestside.Shewassogoodthatshestartedonthevarsityteamherfreshmanyearandreceivedmanyaccolades,includingbeingnamedtheGeorgia-CarolinaNumber1ThreePointShooterandgaininganHonorableMentionfromtheAugustaChronicle.Astheseasonended,Jewelwasconfidentthathersophomoreyearwouldbeanevenbiggersuccess,butthentragedystruck.

Thedayoftheaccidentstartedoutlikeeveryotherday.Whenshecamehomefromschool,Jewelwentinthekitchenandstartedtocookfries.Whilethegreasewasheatingshebecamedistractedassheandhermotherwatchedseveralvideosofagamethattheyhadfilmed.Whenshesmelledsomethingburning,sheandhermotherrushedtothekitchen.Thingswereinflames!Inhereffortstoextinguishthefiremattersbecameworse,theflamingpotfelltothefloorandcaughtJewel’sclothesonfire.Shedroppedandrolledbutreceivedthirddegreeburnsbeforehereffortsweresuccessful.Sherealizedthathermotherwastrappedintheburningkitchenandinthemidstofherhorriblepain,sherantoaneighbor’shomeandgothelp.Inthemeantimehermotherescapedfromthekitchenandwaslookingforher.Anambulancewascalled,buthergrandfathertookmat-tersintohisownhandsanddrovehertoDoctor’sHospital.Jewelhadreceivedburnsover27%ofherbodyandwashospitalizedforseveralweeks.

“Iwasnotallowedtoseemyselfforseveraldays,”Jewelsaid,butsheeventuallycaughthermirroredreflectioninheripod.“IcouldnotbelievewhatIsaw,butIdidnotreallycareabouthowIlookedjustaslongasIwashereandabletoplaybasketball.”Withsuchanamazingdriveandloveforthegame,Jewelsaidthatoneofthefirstthingssheaskedwaswhetherornotshewouldbeabletoplaybasketballthisyear.Shewasdeterminedtogetbackinthegame.

Jewel’srecoveryhasbeenverydifficult.Aftermultiplesurgeriesandrehab,shereturnedtothecourtthreedaysintothisyear’spracticesea-son.“Ihavehadtohaveskingraftsandevenlearnhowtowalkagain,”saidJewel,addingthat“thingsdonotgoasfastastheyusedto.Itjusttakesmesolongnowtodonormalthings,likegettingreadyforschooleverymorning,withallofthelotiontreatmentsandcompressionpadsthatIhavetouse.”Shehasfoundstrength,though,throughherfriendsandfamily.“Mymom,dad,granddad,grandmomandallthepeoplearoundmegivemestrength.ItwasveryemotionalformebecauseIdidnotlikehowIlookedandIwouldgobackandlookatpicturesandsayIdon’tlooklikethatanymore.”Butherlovedoneswouldalwaystellherthatshewasgoingtobejustthesameandthatnobodyshouldjudgeherbecausetheyhadnotbeeninhershoes.“Itisthosepeoplethatkeptencouragingmetogoonwhogavemestrength”. Jewelwouldalsofindstrengthinthegamethatshelovedsomuch.“Ijustwantedtogoplayagain,”Jewelexplained.Herreturntothegamehasnotbeenwithoutitsownchallenges.Thefirstgameoftheseasonshethoughtthatshewouldnotbeabletoplaybecauseanofficialquestionedthelegalityofherplayingwithcompressionpads.“Iwasupsetandwentintothelockerroomandjustcried.”AfterbeingconvincedbyCoachMorristhatthematterwouldberectified,shecamebackoutandwasabletoplay.Jewelalsofindsdifficultyshootingtheball,whichhasalwaysbeenhergreatestskill.“Thefingersonmyshootinghanddonotbendliketheyusedtoandthecompres-sionglovemakesitdifficulttoshoot.”ButJewelisconstantlyworkingtoimproveherflexibilityandgeneralskills.

ThereisnodoubtthatJewelhasbeenchangedbythistragedy.Herrecoveryisfarfromover,butherpassionforbasketballandlifeitselfhasbeenstrengthened.Inherrecovery,Jewelhasbeenaninspirationtoallofthosewhoknowher.Shehasalsobeenaninspirationtoherschool.CoachKevinWatersstatesthat“whatshehasbeenthroughtogetbackisagreatstoryandveryinspiringtome.”Butbestofall,shehasfoundthemotivationwithinherself,helpfromthosearoundher,andthegameofbasketball.Whenaskedhowthegamehasbroughthercomfort,Jewelsaysthat“whenIamoutthereplayingandIhearthesamepeoplescreamingmyname,thatmotivatesmetodobetter.”

SowheredoesJewelgofromhere?ShestillhopestoplayintheWNBAoneday,butfornowJewel’snumberonepriorityistoattendUNCChapelHill,majorinbiologyandbecomeanor-thodontist.Withthedriveandfortitudethatshepossesses,theskytrulyisthelimitforJewel.

North Augusta Yellow Jackets Coach Young’s Team Finds Ways to Win

TheNorthAugustaYellowJacketshavehadtoovercometheirfairshareofchallengesalreadythisbasketballseason.Butfromthestart,theteamwasconfidentthatthisyearcouldbeagoodone,aslongastheyoungerplayerslearnedfastandleanedontheexperi-enceoftheirthreeveteranseniors,AustinDavis,JessiePernellandJaylonMyers.

TheJacketsgotofftoafaststartwithtwowinsoverEvansandgoodperformancesinthetournamentstheyplayedinNovember.GoingintotheARCgameathomeonDecember14th,theJacketswereconfidenttheycouldwin.AvictoryoverARCandthenGreenbrierthreedayslaterwouldgivetheJacketsa7-1start.IntheirgameagainstARC,theJacketsledinthefirstquarter21-14andwentintothehalfleading36-33.NorthAugustalookedsharpinthefirsthalf,movingtheballandshootingwellagainstARC,hittingten“3pointers”(AustinDavis3,JessiePernell3,JaylonMyers3,DevontezRouse1).Comingintothe3rdquarter,NorthAugustacontinuedtokeeppacewithARC,butfellbehindinthe4thquartertoloseinanail-bitingfinish,67-70.ItwasatoughlossfortheJackets,buttheyweredeter-minedtobounceback.

Theirnexttestandlasthomegameof2010wouldbeagainstasolidGreenbrierteam.Earlyinthesecondquarter,trailing20-16,JaylonMyershadtoleavethegamewithaninjuredwrist.Withoneoftheirleadersoutandtheteambehind,NorthAugustahadtoanswerthecall.That’swhenAustinDavisreallysteppeditup.Davis,whoscoredtwentypointsinthegame,hadnineofthosepointscomeinthe2ndquarter.Heat-tackedthelanewitheaseandhisteammatesfedhimtheballintransition.Twokeyback-to-backthreepointersmadebyDeVontezRouseandMarcelleMcClureinthefourthquarterhelpedNorthAugustapullawayandsealthevictory51-64.CoachYoungmentionedearlyintheseasonthattheYellowJacket’sdefensiveplaywouldhavetoimproveinorderforthemtobecomeagoodteam.AgainstGreenbrier,thedefenseprovedtobethekeytowinningthegameandkeepingtheWolfpackatbay.

NowtheNorthAugustaYellowJacketswillentertheBi-LoTournamentwitha6-2recordandridinghighofftheirvictoryagainstGreenbrier.Inspiteofthechallengeofteamrebuildingthisyear,theseniorplayersarehelpingtoleadNorthAugustatoawinningseason.Withasolidstart,theyhavehighhopesforfinishingstrongin2011.

Likeotherlifts,performingthesquatmovementwithincorrecttechniquecancauseinjuryandpreventathletesfromreceivingthefullbenefitoftheexercise.Themostcommonconditionsassociatedwithpoorsquattingmechanicsareanteriorkneepainandlowerbackpain.

Anteriorkneepainsuchaspatellatendonitisorpatellofemoralsyndromeandlowerbackpainfromlumbarstrainorintervertebraldiskinjurycanbecausedbyseveralmechanicalflaws.Limitedhiporankleflexion,excessivekneeflexion,oracombinationofbothcancausecompensationmovements.Oneofthemostcommoncompensationmovementsistoallowthekneestomoveforwardbeyondthetoescreatingadditionalstresstothepatellatendonandpatellofemoraljoint.Lowerbackinjuriesareusuallycausedbybendingforward,straighteningthenaturalcurveofthelowerbackcausingthelowerbackmusclestolengthenandstrainduringthelift.

Noticethepropersquattechniquediagraminwhichthesubjectisnotallowingthekneestomoveforwardpastthetoes.Thesubjectisalsonotbendingexcessivelyforwardwiththebackbutmaintainingaproperlumbarcurvethroughoutthelift.

Inthegirl’sbracket,LaneyadvancedtothechampionshipafterbeatingCrossCreekandButler.AikenCountyad-vancedafterwinsoverJoseyandHephzibah.LaneywouldgoontobeatAikenCountyandwinthegirl’stitle,70-58.TheLadyWildcatshadahugethirdquarterperformancefrom#10,MykalaJones,whoscoredanastonishing14ofthe26pointsscoredinthethirdquarter.Hereffortsinthe3rdgaveLaneya14pointleadtheywouldnotrelinquish.

Greenbrier Swim Team Excited About SeasonIt’s All About Speed

CoachJasonLucyhascoachedGreenbrierHighSchool’sswimteamforfouryears.Heisconfidentthatthisyear’steamisthebesthe’severcoached.Itisnotonlythetalentthathefeelsmakesthisteamspecial,butalsotheeffortandpotentialthattheyhaveshownleadinguptothisseason.Thesefactorscombinedwitharegionchangemaybetheperfectrecipeforsuccess.

Inyearspast,Greenbrierwasassignedtoregion2-AAAAA,whichmeantthattheywerecompetingagainstschoolswithmuchlargerstudentpopulations,andyettheystillwonmanymeets.Thisyear,theswitchtoregion2-AAAAhasplacedtheswimteamonamuchmorelevelplayingfield.CoachLucyisexcitedaboutthepossibilities.“Itwasanunbelievableswitch,because5Amadeusrealizehowgoodwehavetobe,butnowbeingin4Aandseeingsomeoftheresultscominginmakesusrealizehowgoodweare.”

Greenbrier’steamisalsofulloftalentedswimmerswhoarerealteamplayers.ManyhighschoolswimmersintheareaaremembersofAik-en-AugustaSwimLeague,soinadditiontoschoolcompetition,theycompeteyearround.Greenbrieronlyhasfivethatfallintothatgroup.Lucyisamazedbyhowwellhisteamhasdonegiventhisfact.“Forthisgrouptobecuttingtimeoffofrelayseverysinglemeetsaysalotaboutthegroup”andheattributesthattotheirteamchemistry.Onthemen’steam,thathasbeenmodeledbyitsleaders,oneofwhomisNickBrown,ajunioratGreenbrier.

Nickisnotnewtoswimming.AftermovingtoAugustahejoinedGreaterAugustaSwimming(GAS)andthenmovedontoAiken-AugustaSwimLeague(ASL).Nickhasfocusedhiseffortsinthe200IMandthe500IM.Whenaskedwhyhefeelsstronginthoseevents,hesaysthatitisallabouttraining.“WithASLwetrainsomuch,wedosomuchyardageandgetcloseto8000yardsadayandtheintensityatwhichwedoitmakesthedistanceseasier.”Asaveteranswimmer,Nickalsohasgrowntounderstandtheimportanceoftheteaminhighschoolswimming.“Itisdiffer-entthaninyearround,becausethereyoufocusonyougettingcertainqualifyingtimes,butinhighschoolitisateameffort.”ThateffortshouldhelppropelGreenbriertothestateswimmingfinals.Nickisveryconfidentthattheywillbeabletoachievethatgoal.“Everyonejustneedstoswimtheirheartoutandjuststepitup,”Nicksays.NickfeelsthattheonethingthatwouldhelpthemmoreatStatewouldbeforeveryonetohavefunandberelaxed,addingthat“fastswimmingisfunswimming.”Nick’sperformancewilldefinitelyhelp.Hecontinuestoshaveofftimeinallofhisevents,suchasbreakinghisownpreviousstatequalifyingtimeof50.40witha49.91onDecember9thinthe100freestyle.

Onthewomen’ssideofthisGreenbrierteam,KateClarkleadstheway.KatehascontinuallyimprovedandhashelpedtopushtheGreen-brierladiestonewheights.Sheshavedofftimeinthe100minthesamemeetby4tenthsofasecond,clockinginatablazing55.43.Shealsoimprovedhertimeinthe100yardbackstrokewithatimeof1:03.55,beatingherpreviousstatequalifyingtimeof1:04.06.

TheGreenbrierswimteamisdefinitelyateamthatisonthemove.Teamchemistry,maturityandleaderssuchasNickandKatewillmakethisteamhardtobeatin2011.

Forthelastsixyears,Laney’swomen’sbasketballteamhasbeentheteamtobeatunderthedirectionofCoachOtisSmart.Smarthashadconsistentwinningrecordsformostofthisdecadeandhopestokeepthattraditionalive.Sofarthisseason,theLadyWildcatsareofftoagoodstart.TheWildcatscurrentlyhavean11-1record,withtheironlylosscom-ingagainstDutchFork.Theteamhascontinuedthetraditionofbeatingmostoftheiroppo-nentsbylargemargins.Infact,theyhaveoutscoredtheiropponentsbyatotalof376pointsalreadythisseason.Sowhatmakesthisteamsogood?

ThefirstweaponinLaney’sarsenalisthepressdefensetheLadyWildcatsusetospeedupthegame.HavingsuchasoliddefenseallowsSmart’steamtoplayfast,presshardandcreateturnovers.TheWildcatssimplyweartheiropponentsdownbytheendofthegame.Withsixreturningseniorsandeightjuniors,anotheradvantagetheyhaveisexperi-ence.SeniorCiaraMorris,whoplayssmallforward,saysthat“wereallydon’thaveanof-fensewithoutagooddefense.”Ciaraalsosharesthattheteamplayswelltogetherandtheyallhavegreatawarenessonthecourt.
