Local Vendor Profile

Ananda Organics produces all-natural handmade soaps, lip balms, massage oil, whipped shea butter, lotion bars, chest rubs, essen-tial oil blends and even an herbal periwash tea for new moms. It’s no wonder that sales of their budding local product line are taking off, as owner Emily Laetsch has been using, learning about and working with essential oils at least half her life. Emily remembers her mother using essential oils around their home from the time she was in middle school. In her early 20’s Emily worked at Basics, before moving on to massage school where she studied essential oils and aromatherapy. She then spent several years learning more about herbs, essential oils and holistic healing while working at the former Naturopathic Family Clinic and practicing massage. Emily and her husband now work together to produce and market her signature line of organic per-sonal care, and even her 10-year old daughter helps with wrap-ping the soaps- “especially if mom offers pay, of course, because she’s 10”, Emily says with a smile.

Ananda Organics products are made with all organic oils, fair trade shea butter, and pure essential oils- no “phony fragrances”. The lotion bars, one of Ananda’s first products, remain popular for cracked skin on hands and feet. The two newest products are herbal aid lip balm and chest rubs that came out just in time for cold season. The lip balm contains tamanu oil and shea butter for healing, with a protective herbal infusion including licorice root, lemon balm, and marshmallow root, and an essential oil blend including those known to help prevent and soothe cold sores. The chest rubs are made with essential oils in a simple base of beeswax, olive and sunflower oils. Breathe Easy chest rub is safe for the whole family, including babies 6 months and older.

Ananda Organics products can be found throughout the Health & Beauty department at Basics, and chest rubs in Aisle 5. Local massage therapists at Path to Wellness and Health in Hand use Ananda Organics oils in their practices. New products to watch for at Basics include a Coconut Milk Shampoo Bar, aromatherapy roll-ons and an aluminum free deodorant. “Ananda”, translated roughly from Sanskrit, means “a state of perfect bliss” – and Ananda Organics is sure to help you get there with their growing line of restorative organic personal care and fragrant aromather-apy blends.

Did You Know?

What Are“Natural Flavors?”

According to the CFR – Code of Federal Regulations Title 21, Volume 6, revised as of April 1, 2014:“The term natural flavor or natural fla-voring means the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydroly-sate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or veg-etable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavor rather than nutritional.”

Essentially, a natural flavor is an ingredient derived originally from food that comes from nature- but the extraction process or highly refined result may still be of con-cern to some. As always, if you are con-cerned you should buy certified organic- the natural flavors allowed in organics DO still have to comply with all USDA organic standards.

According to the Vermont Organic Farm-ers, LLC, a USDA organic certifier, this means the natural flavors in organics must not be from synthetic sources, may not be produced using synthetic solvents, may not contain any synthetic carrier systems

or any artificial preservatives including synthetic emulsifiers or antioxidants, and Genetically Modified Organism(GMO) products may not be used at any stage in the process of making them.

Individuals with the 8 most common food allergies should not be concerned, as long as you are label-reading - since 2006 man-ufacturers are required to declare on the label if one or more of these are contained in a natural flavoring: milk, egg, fish, crus-tacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts and soybeans.

As most of our customers are food label readers (YAY for informed consumers!) you have likely noticed the term “natural flavors” in the ingredients listing on some natural or organic products. But what is or is not considered a “natural flavor”?

Many longtime members of our commu-nity have fond memories of the beehive located in the Basics store on Memorial Drive! The hive was introduced and cared for by Basics’ very own beekeeper, Wally Brown. Wally scrupulously supplied honey to Basics from the store’s early days more than 35 years ago, all the way to 2014. Sadly, this past spring, Wally passed on to the Eternal Hive after a brief but coura-geous battle with a brain tumor.

Wally cared for bees with knowledge and passion, developing techniques and even building proprietary equipment to curate the high-quality local honey we have relied on for years. His reputation in the local beekeeping community continues to be influential.

For much of 2014 your Co-op had the honor of working with Lonnie Brown as she cared both for Wally and for his hon-ey farm. She kept Basics stocked through September with the honey Wally had pro-duced the previous summer. As Wally’s illness progressed, conversation naturally began regarding what would happen to the honey farm.

Wally was the go-to referral at the UW Ex-tension back when Mike and Robyn Koe-hler called in 2009, interested in a profes-sion as beekeepers. Mike and Robyn had always wanted to get into farming, but the initial investment was too high. After a 45 minute conversation covering a list of questions, Wally had suggested that they meet. They soon became great friends.

When the time came for Lonnie to pass on Wally’s legacy, Mike & Robyn Koehler stepped forward, willing and ready. The lo-cal honey now sold at Basics is the product of Mike & Robyn Koehler’s guidance and effort, using all the same Bee yards that Wally used, the same equipment and the same techniques!

According to Mike Koehler, “Wally has been our mentor since 2009 – and he still is.” You can find Koehler’s honey in our bulk honey bucket and in the sweetener section. What a rare and beautiful legacy of quality and care for bees, the land, and our food supply.

Our holidays have come and gone. The consequences of over-eat-ing and the lack of regular exercise during that time can raise havoc with dietary, weight loss and workout progress made in the previous months.

At a recent symposium held at Gunderson Lutheran Medical Cen-ter in La Crosse, Dr. Peter Wilson, Director of Laboratories for the famous, long-running Framingham Heart Study in Boston said that obesity and diabetes are at epidemic levels, with Wisconsin leading the way. Research shows diabetes doubles the risk for death from coronary artery disease and obesity compounds the risk of developing heart disease, according to Wilson. “If you’re fat and diabetic, you are going to get heart disease,” he said.

Dr. Wilson conceded that most people don’t want to make lifestyle changes to help themselves. Instead, they prefer to take drugs. For many seniors, prescriptions for lowering cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure take a significant percent of their limited fixed monthly income. Losing weight and getting regular exercise becomes more important after age 55 to lower ones risk of dia-betes. Giving up smoking will improve health status almost im-mediately.

Less expensive than most prescriptions are dietary supplements. Three B vitamins, folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 improve clin-ical outcomes in heart patients, according to a recent report in the Journal of the American Medical Association (2002;288:973-9). Although numerous studies have suggested that these vitamins might promote heart health, this new study may be the best and most definitive one to date.

The protection gained by these nutrients against heart disease may be due in part to their ability to reduce homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is a byproduct of amino acid metabolism that is believed to promote the development of coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease. Evidence indicated that el-evated homocysteine may promote atherosclerosis by damaging the inner lining of arteries and promoting blood clots.

Using additional study data from the Framingham study indicates a strong association between elevated homocysteine levels and

the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Study information suggests that the elevation in homocysteine levels preceded the onset of dementia. Studies continue to research the effect of hy-perhomocysteine levels on overall health status. The U.S. govern-ment now mandates folic acid and vitamin B6 fortification of the food supply. Dietary sources of homocysteine include: enriched cereal-grain products, fruits and green leafy vegetables, wheat germ and meat.

The best gift that you could give your special Valentine (or your-self) is to begin today to make heart healthy lifestyle changes. You can do it!

*Regular physical activity is defined as 30 minutes daily. Do not begin an exer-cise or dietary program without first checking with your physician. Never stop taking prescription drugs or begin dietary supplements until you’ve discussed your situation with your healthcare provider.
