HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2006

QUALITY PEOPLE

• The quality of student intake remained very high with a median ENTER score of 94.30.

• The quality of University staff is recognised through prestigious awards and the election of 11 staff as fellows of learned societies.

• Staff receive recognition for excellence in teaching through Carrick Citations and Awards.

LEARNING & TEACHING

• The Melbourne Model was adopted, providing for three year undergraduate degrees, followed by a professional or research masters degree, and the option of a PhD. Core principles for the Melbourne Model degrees were established.

• Six new Melbourne Model undergraduate degrees in Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Environments, Music and Science will be offered from 2008. Graduate degrees will be phased in from 2008.

• Melbourne achieved a top ranking and the highest grant of $8.9m in the Commonwealth Learning and Teaching Performance Fund.

• Staff received an exceptional nine Carrick citations for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning and two Carrick Awards for Australian University Teaching.

• Design and development of collaborative learning spaces and multi-purpose student learning hubs is underway to enhance student experience.

RESEARCH & RESEARCH TRAINING

• Since 1996 Melbourne has ranked first or second on national research indicators of total research income, research publications, RHD student load and completions.

• Melbourne recorded the largest number of research higher degree enrolments and completions nationally with continued improvement in the completion rate.

• Assessments of all faculties and departments placed more than 90% of academic units in the top three in Australia, with around half ranked as No 1

• Seven internationally outstanding researchers were awarded Federation Fellowships at the University.

• Australia’s largest biopharmaceutical company, CSL, entered into an innovation partnership providing for 50 of its scientists to relocate to the University’s Bio21 Institute.

• The University joined an elite international group of universities teaching Veterinary Science after winning accreditation by the American Veterinary Medicine Association.

INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENT

• The international standing of the University as judged by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University institutional rankings continued to improve with a ranking of 78. The University was ranked No 22 in the world by the Times Higher Education Supplement Study 2006.

• The University was admitted as a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. Membership is based on academic excellence, research intensity, global outlook and innovation.

• International student load increased, with international student numbers exceeding 10,000 and representing 25.9 % of student load.

• The Confucius Institute was established with support from both the Victorian and Chinese governments. It is part of a global network facilitating the teaching of the Chinese language and culture.

Science is an international discipline which thrives on collaboration that brings together people from all over the world. Science at Melbourne is an enriching experience for staff and students from local, national or international backgrounds.

For over 100 years, the health sciences, science and engineering at Melbourne have made an exceptional and significant contribution to our reputation as a leading Australian research organisation. Today, we are consistently ranked among the top universities in the world for science:

No 1 in Australia for Biomedicine (7th in the world)

No 1 in Australia for Engineering & Technology (16th in the world, ahead of Harvard, UCLA, and Princeton)

No 2 in Australia for Science (27th in the world, all sciences)

Science, engineering and technology teaching staff are among the most internationally recognised in Australia. This is demonstrated by the uninterrupted success in the Australian Government ‘Federation Fellow’ program. The research grants awarded by this program, rank among the most prestigious in Australia and reward scientific excellence. Currently, the University of Melbourne has 12 ‘Federation Fellows’ across different branches of science, engineering and technology.

The School of Physics >To advance the knowledge and understanding of physics for the benefit of society, science and the environment by continually achieving excellence in teaching and research. Our aim is to be one of the best Physics Schools in the world.

The School of Physics is one of the oldest and largest in Australia. It houses approximately 200 teaching & research academic staff, research staff, professional staff, postgraduate and 4th year Honours students. The School is justifiably proud of its internationally competitive and comprehensive undergraduate and research programs, particularly with the Honours, Masters and PhD programs.

The major research strengths of the department staff span a diverse range of interests including astrophysics, atom optics, cosmology, condensed matter physics, experimental particle physics, medical physics, nanotechnology and materials science, theoretical particle physics, quantum information science, X-ray and imaging optics. The breadth and depth of interests is reflected in the undergraduate teaching programs.

The School enjoys excellent international reputation in research with its collaborators in CERN (Switzerland), KEK (Japan), Advanced Photon Source (USA), Argonne Lab (USA), Hubble Telescope (USA), NASA, NIST, National Oakridge Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories, and many top universities in Europe, North America and Asia.

In addition, the School locally collaborates with researchers at other Australian facilities such as Anglo-Australian Telescope, APAC, Austin Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, Parkes Telescope, Australian Synchrotron, Walter & Eliza Hall Institute, Howard Florey Institute, CSIRO as well as laboratory facilities within the University of Melbourne Schools and Departments of Biochemical & Microbiology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Medicine, Pathology and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering.

The School has an outstanding record of achievement in attracting external research funding including grants from the Australian Research Council (ARC), Australian Academy of Science, Victorian Government and USA government bodies.

Guided by the University of Melbourne’s strategy of Growing Esteem, our staff and students continue to contribute strongly in each of the three important elements of the University’s strategic directions:

Research – Researchers operate at the highest levels internationally. Areas of research from key fundamental questions in astrophysics, cosmology and particle physics, through to important problems applying known laws of physics to complex systems or in innovative new applications. The training of students to international standards is a key driver of the School’s research activities. The upcoming Research Quality Framework will focus our attention on what we have achieved and future goals.

The School continues to contribute to the design and construction of the ATLAS experiment soon to commence at CERN, to the new radio-astrophysics MWA array in Western Australia, and to various instrumentation projects at the Australian Synchrotron. The School is leading the establishment of a large computing facility for the analysis of data from CERN. Learning & Teaching – with the new Melbourne Model aims at attracting the best and brightest students from around Australia and internationally. The School is preparing for the 3-year undergraduate program followed by a 2-year MSc that promises advanced graduate coursework and projects that are not possible in the current curriculum. Knowledge Transfer – the School continues to engage the public through an outstanding outreach program, through a re-invigorated alumni and friends program, and through a new University-encouraged engagement of business and industry.

The work of an academic department takes many forms but teaching and research are at its heart. In the pages of this report you will find a snap-shot of our research and teaching activities in 2006. In doing so, we celebrate the achievements of our students, including those who have won academic prizes and those who have completed degrees.

The report also celebrates the achievements of our staff, including the papers they have published and the research grants they have been awarded. We celebrate the diversity of our staff and students, their interests and backgrounds. We are passionate in our commitment to highest standards in teaching and research in physics.

The School currently hosts the Melbourne node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computing Computer Technology, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science and Quantum Communications Victoria (QCV). The School houses a suite of premier research laboratories and facilities including:

a clean room complex equipped with advanced instrumentation for materials fabrication, characterisation and analysis including focused ion beam microscopes, UHV AFM/STM scanning probe system, UV Ramanspectrometer, and a pulsed laser deposition system.

a particle detector development and construction facility comprising clean rooms, precision wirebonder detector development, ssembly and evaluation capabilities.

advanced X-ray, laser, microscopy and atom optics laboratories

a 5 MV Pelletron accelerator providing source of MeV ion beams in 5 beamlines used in nuclear microprobe systems

excellent library with extensive collection of journals , books and texts (mostly on-line) to service the teaching and research activities ofthe School (as well as external institutions)

EXECUTIVE MANAGER'S REPORT

The Teaching and Research effort of the School has been well supported again this year by excellent professional staff. Staff were employed in two new centres, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science and QCV; Quantum Communications Victoria. We welcome Tania Smith, Rosslyn Ball, Joanne Gajewski and Stacey Watts to the school. Joanne Kuluveovski was promoted to Research & Communications Manager in recognition of her support for the School’s research effort and her additional secondment to MRIO. Cilla Gloger's skills were also acknowledged in a secondment to the USP Publications Module deployment. We were also fortunate to have Michelle Geil join us as the new PA to the Head, replacing Kristine Philipp.

Within the IT group, we farewelled the manager Will Belcher who was replaced by Tim Dyce. Peter Fuggle also left the team to take up a position outside the university.

Jude Prezens and Stephen Marshall joined Nick Nicola in the undergraduate laboratories, while Michael Gangoiti moved to IT Central Services.

Building works this year have included the refurbishment of the MARC area on Level 2, an upgrade of the Part II undergraduate laboratories, completion of the Geoff Opat Seminar Room, modification to research space in the basement and air conditioning for the server room.

An impressive area of offices and meeting space was also developed on Level 2 for the new ARC Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science.

NUPP Summer School (2 - 6 February 2006)

Hosted by the AIP Nuclear and Particle Physics group (NUPP) and organised by Professor Bruce McKellar, a summer school was held at the School of Physics, featuring guest lectures from Professors Burce Barrett (Arizona), Wally Melnitchouk (Jefferson Laboratory), John Ellis (CERN) and Roland Crocker (Adelaide). ASTROPHYSICS

PROF RACHEL WEBSTER

The Astrophysics group has had a particularly successful year with strong recognition of its research and research training program.

Dr Stuart Wyithe was awarded the Woodward medal of the University of Melbourne for the most significant research achievements in the past year in science and engineering. This award, following the Research Award from the Dean of Science earlier in the year, was a major achievement for an early career researcher. Stuart continued his very productive studies of the ‘dark ages’ and luminous sources at the time of the Epoch of Reionisation.

Dr Andrew Melatos has built a strong group of postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows working on his models of gravitational waves from accreting neutron stars. In addition, this group is becoming deeply involved with both Australian and international efforts to compute templates for the detection of the first gravitational wave signatures in LIGO data. Andrew chaired the SOC and LOC for the Texas Symposium in December at Melbourne University. This was an enormous task and resulted in a highly successful conference, which bought great credit to the School of Physics.

Professor Rachel Webster continued her work on the microlensing of lensed quasars, with the successful completion of Gemini observations of about ten systems. This data is being analysed and modeled to determine the sizes of the quasar emission regions. Professor Webster was winner of the inaugural Nature mid-career award for creative mentoring in science.

Prototype of MIRA Widefield Array (low frequency radio telescope) in Boolardy, WA

At the end of 2006, the Melbourne group and its Australian collaborators were awarded an ARC LIEF grant to start the construction of the Low Frequency radio array in WA. This project was also strongly supported by NCRIS. With collaborators, MIT, Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics and Raman Research Institute, the group is gearing up to start construction in the latter part of 2007.

The Melbourne group continued to support the Australian Virtual Observatory, with Dr Catherine Manson completing her work in late 2006.

One PhD was awarded in the group in 2006: Dr Meryl Waugh. In addition, two MSc degrees were completed: Travis Stenborg and Alpha Mastrano. Alpha achieved a very high score for his thesis and was subsequently awarded an IPRS scholarship.

The academics of the EPP group are Elisabetta Barberio, Roger Rassool, Geoff Taylor and myself. Our activities span Experimental Particle Physics, detector development, computing grid development and Science Education outreach. The cornerstones of our research are the ATLAS and Belle experiments at CERN in Switzerland and KEK in Japan respectively. In 2006 we secured funding for the next 4 years to continue this research through a series of grants from the ARC and DEST.

ATLAS

ATLAS is an experiment designed to study Electroweak symmetry breaking in the energy regime above 100 GeV via observing proton collisions at 14 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva. Substantial progress on both the construction of the LHC and the ATLAS experiment was achieved in 2006. A large fraction of the ATLAS experiment was installed in the underground cavity around the LHC collision point and succeeded in fully reconstructing cosmic ray tracks which span the entire detector. These are currently being employed for detector calibration.

The EPP group completed the installation of Patch Panel-3 signal conditioning boards in 2006. We also invested substantial effort on software tasks. These include: electron track reconstruction, electromagnetic calorimeter calibration, detector alignment and data analysis. Within the data-analysis effort, we are working in the Higgs to tau tau, Higgs to four electrons and the search for SUSY groups. Tom Atkinson also submitted his PhD thesis in this area.

Belle

Belle is a experiment at the KEK asymmetric electron-positron accelerator which provides the world highest luminosity collider used to make copious numbers of B-mesons in a clean environment. Belle has made numerous discoveries since it commenced data collection in 1999, including the observation of CP violation in B-meson decays, the first such measurement outside the neutral kaon system.

The Physics highlights of 2006 from Belle are world’s first measurement of the purely leptonic decay, B→τν and an improved analysis of the rare decay B→dγ . The B→τν decay mode is sensitive to the fundamental parameter of the Standard Model, |Vub| and to New Physics beyond the Standard Model. The new analysis of rare decay B→dγ significantly reduces the uncertainty

on its branching ratio. The result is nicely complementary to the recent measurement of Bs mixing at the CDF experiment at Fermilab.

Within the Australian group, Dr Elisabetta Barberio, from the University of Melbourne, organised a workshop on |Vxb| analyses from B-meson decays in Melbourne in February 2006. This was attended by about 20 world experts who studied the prospects for improvements in the experimental measurements and theoretical interpretation of studies sensitive to |Vub| and |Vcb|. Phillip Urquijo made presentation to the prestigious 23rd International Conference on High energy Physics. "Moments of the electron energy spectrum and partial branching fraction of /// decays at Belle". In which he presented our work to make the world’s most precise measurement of the fundamental Standard Model parameter, |Vcb|. Jeremy Dalseno also submitted his PhD thesis.

Grid Computing

When ATLAS begins operation in late 2007 it will produce roughly 15 million gigabytes of data per year, equivalent to 3 million DVDs or 1% of the total global digital information output. The Worldwide LHC Computing grid (WLCG) is a massive, distributed, international computing infrastructure designed to enable analysis of this enormous data set. It coordinates and shares processing power, data, applications and network resources from many thousands of linked computers. The EPP group has played a leading role in the development of grid in Australia and have deployed a grid infrastructure across 300 computers at 5 facilities in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide. In 2006 we developed a prototype Tier 2 site which has been incorporated into the WLCG computing grid. The WLCG itself has become a real working system which processes over 50,000 jobs per day.

Instrumentation

The EPP group has been involved in the commissioning of the Australian Synchrotron through the development of extremely high speed photon detectors, the PILATUS pixel silicon detectors via collaboration with Christian Broennimann and his group from the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Switzerland and PET detector developments in collaboration with the University of Wollongong and the Austin Hospital.

The Microanalytical Research Centre (MARC) is a member of the Australian Research Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computer Technology. The Centre aims to position Australia as a leader in quantum computer technology, a field which will play a crucial role in the future of information technology. MARC is also a partner in the Nanostructural Analysis Network Organisation (NANO) which is a Major National Research Facility. In addition to these major national consortia MARC houses an emerging international program on quantum diamond which has spun out Quantum Communications Victoria (QCV) thanks to a grant from the State Government of Victoria. We also enjoy a close collaboration with Applied Physics at RMIT, the Australian National University and other research groups worldwide.

Together with Lloyd Hollenberg, his theory team and our partners in the Centre for Quantum Computer Technology, we made several important breakthroughs in 2006 with the quantum computer project. We successfully produced a new class of quantum dots using a self-aligned process based on ion implantation to produce both the dots and the leads used for control. This was an important milestone because it showed our ability to fabricate, control and analyse devices based on single electrons. Our work on these devices was published in several papers in Applied Physics Letters , Nanotechnology etc. We have also continued to develop the method of implanting single atoms into silicon and one of our students (Toby Hopf) spent several months at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in California installing this equipment on their ion beam system. Other students spend extended stays in laboratories in Europe and the USA where they worked on different devices containing single atoms implanted in Melbourne.

In the diamond research project we concluded a long study on the most important aspect of diamond as a promising material for microelectronic devices: the transport of electric charge. Using our nuclear microprobe to scan synthetic diamonds at high temperature, we were able to obtain detailed images of charge transport through this very complex material. These images allowed us to formulate a universal theory for charge transport and this was published in the Journal of Applied

Physics . Our work , on making micro- and nano-scale gadgets in diamond also attracted a lot of attention. This work, which uses a highly unusual method based on focused ion beams to carve complicated devices from diamond, has applications to the development of sources of single photons for secure communication systems and quantum information processing. Some of these applications were described in a major international review prepared by Andrew Greentree .

Work on the quantum computer project also kept the group in very high demand for presentations at conferences and workshops during 2006. Many of our staff and students gave talks on their work at the first International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology 2006 (ICONN2006) and the 17th Biennial Congress of the Australian Institute of Physics, both held in Brisbane in July and December 2006. Our work also formed the topic on several public lectures given by our personnel at various places around Australia. Our personnel were also in high demand by other institutions. The end of 2006 saw several of our postdoctoral staff leave to take up permanent appointments at other Institutions and Universities in Australia: Jim Rabeau to Macquarie University, Chris Pakes to LaTrobe University and Sergey Rubanov to Bio21.

We look forward to many new upgrades to our facilities in 2007. These include a significant enhancement in our abilities to make our own devices based on our ion beam physics expertise with the arrival of a mask aligner and e-beam evaporator into our clean rooms as well as a significant development of our quantum measurement capabilities with a new cryogenic low temperature measurement system. We are grateful to the ARC for providing funds for this new equipment. We are also grateful to the School of Physics for the extensive renovation of our office space in 2006. This has created a very comfortable environment for all our staff and students.

Following its establishment in July 2005 via a State Government of Victoria Science, Technology and Innovation grant, Quantum Communications Victoria (QCV) has been operating successfully for over a year within the School of Physics. The progress of the QCV during this time has been excellent with key milestones met.

The QCV has assembled a team of expert research and engineering personnel across the fields of photonics and material science and established a business development and marketing program. During this time there have been a number of procedures put in place and internal and external relationships developed in order to ensure the effective running of the program. The QCV has an Executive Board who meet quarterly and an Industry Advisory Group (IAG) to provide valuable advice and direction to the QCV. The Executive Board and IAG draws together significant expertise and experience from industry, academia and government.

The research efforts of the QCV continue to focus on the research and development of a device capable of producing single packets of light (photons) which can be transmitted in optical fibre. Such a device will resolve the existing issues of single photon generation in current quantum communication systems. The QCV device is a diamond-based Single Photon Source module suitable for optical fibre based quantum communications.

In the later part of 2006 QCV was joined for six months by Dr James Butler, Head Gas/Surface Dynamics Section, Chemistry Division, Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC. Dr Butler has extensive diamond knowledge and during his time with the QCV has made substantial contributions to furthering the research and development program.

The first QCV annual report was produced for the financial year 2005/2006 and received an overwhelmingly positive response to the quality and content. Furthermore, through out the year the QCV has carried out various promotional activities, and continued to promote the School of Physics and the QCV via internal and external avenues which include competitions, conferences and media announcements.

Dr Shane Huntington was a winner of the 2006 Young Tall Poppy award from the Australian Institute of Policy and Science which aims to promote awareness of Australia’s intellectual achievements. Additionally, the QCV entered the ICT Secrets of Innovation Competition, an initiative of the Federal Government. This award recognises innovation in science that will have an impact on information communication technology across the areas of commerce, health and communications. The QCV entered the Single Photon Source module as the innovation and was announced as a finalist in the security division. The winners of the awards will be announced in 2007.

The QCV out reach program continues to aim at educating and informing school teachers and students as well as the general public. The QCV participated in the University of Melbourne open day with an interactive stand at the School of Physics, which was well attended by members of the public. The first QCV newsletter was also distributed to a broad audience of more than 500 school teachers and students in early December 2006. The QCV will continue to produce and distribute the newsletter on a quarterly basis. Additionally, the QCV hosted a lunch time media forum and two media training workshops which were aimed at educating academics in how to communicate effectively with the media. The forum and workshops were well attended by staff and post graduate students from the Faculty of Science and received an overwhelmingly positive response. The QCV will again be running these workshops in 2007.

The industry engagement program continues to work towards establishing and maintaining links with related industries and forming strategic relationships with specific companies and organisations. These activities aim to inform Australian industry of the implications of quantum communications and to enable new avenues of competitive benefits for current industries in Australia, particularly Victoria.

and are recognised as the new standard for testing theoretical models of atomic and solid structure. Chris Chantler was successful in receiving an ARC Discovery Grant ‘Critical Tests of Quantum Electro-Dynamics (QED) in heavy atomic systems,’ to extend our leadership in fundamental tests of atomic physics. Chris was also Guest Editor of the journal Radiation Physics & Chemistry, Volume 75, Issue 11 (2006).

Rob Scholten and his students have been making excellent progress on a number of fronts. In particular, the team has made an extension of their diffractive contrast imaging methods, from the imaging of ground-state ultracold atoms to imaging of atoms in specific excited states. Imaging the excited-state atom distribution will be used to optimise photo-ionisation of cold atom samples, to generate intense electron bunches which will then be used for a new source of coherent X-rays. The imaging is also a component of our ARC DP funded research project, 'Quantum and classical imaging with light and atoms'. Laser control of the atomic quantum state is used to actively control the refractive index of the cold atoms which are being imaged. Future work will use that control to enhance or suppress the image, for example to demonstrate imaging of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) for the first time.

EIT was used as the basis for a new scheme to lock the frequency difference between two lasers to the energy separation between two hyperfine levels of an atom. The hyperfine splitting is the basis of atomic clocks as used in GPS systems and cell phone base stations. Many leading-edge experiments in atomic physics now rely on having two lasers with precisely that frequency difference, for example in producing Bose-Einstein condensates, generating slow light, demonstrating quantum qubits with atoms, and measuring atto-Tesla magnetic fields such as those produced by human brain activity.

The group is also having an impact beyond academia and a laser controller developed in the lab was commercially launched, and a new company (MOG Laboratories Pty. Ltd., ABN 42 125 895 025) established to further develop and market the design. The University is now in the late stages of licensing the IP to international laser and instrumentation companies.

Rob and Ann appointed Dr Stefania Castelletto to work with them. Stefania joined us from the Italian Institute of Metrological Research on quantum and classical two-beam imaging.

OPTICS

The group has had a very successful year with many developments and recognition of group members.

Ann Roberts and her colleagues have been concentrating on producing novel metallic nanophotonic structures. In collaboration with researchers at the Australian National University and members of the MARC, we have produced patterned metallic films that resonate in the near-infrared. This research was presented at ETOPIM in Sydney in July, AOS/ACOFT, the annual SPIE meeting in San Diego in August and NFO9 in Lausanne in September. We also made advances in the application of phase microscopy to imaging complex three dimensional structures. This research was reported at a number of international and local meetings during the year. The collaboration with the Department of Physiology into applications of phase microscopy to live cell imaging continues and we have recently obtained striking images showing the birefringence of heart cells.

We were delighted that Dr Nicoleta Dragomir was successful in attracting an ARC Discovery grant and an Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship which she commenced in July, and Ann was awarded an Edward Clarence Dyason Universitas 21 Fellowship and a grant from the Australian Academy of Science to visit Europe in 2007. Ann’s student, Shannon Orbons, was presented a prize as one of the best three student presenters at ETOPIM and also received an SPIE scholarship to attend the annual meeting in San Diego in August. Xiao Ming Goh was awarded the CiSRA prize for best poster at the AIP Congress in Brisbane in December.

Chris Chanter and his colleagues and students continued their development of synchrotron experimental techniques and research into atomic, chemical, bioactive and condensed matter systems. Chris has had a very successful years and we were delighted that he was awarded the International JARI Enterprise Award for 'outstanding work in the radiation sciences', the nature of the research being recognised to be of a leading and challenging nature,’ at the International Symposium on Radiation Physics in Portugal. He was also co-winner of the national David Syme Rearch Award for ‘original research making an important contribution to the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Geology or Physics’ by an Australian researcher. Furthermore, Martin de Jonge was awarded the Chancellor’s Prize for the best Doctoral Thesis at the University of Melbourne in 2006, in Science or Engineering. These are all extremely prestigious awards and very notable achievements.

The most recent measurements by this team are almost two orders of magnitude more accurate and precise than all previous literature,

Keith Nugent has been almost exclusively involved in the establishment of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science. However he has had many other demands on his time, including chairing a committee developing a ten year strategic plan for synchrotron-based science in Australia and chairing the committee seeking to appoint the Science Director for the Australian Synchrotron. He has also been working with the company IATIA on taking over an ARC linkage project with the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, a project that has been relinquished by the previous commercial partner. This process will see Alaster Meehan move to a scholarship funded by this project and taking on an enrolment that also involved the Department of Optometry and Vision Science. Keith has also continued his activity as a member of the Board of Directors for IATIA Ltd, a company that continues to develop.

Funding for CXS arrived at the beginning of 2006, although the Centre had been functioning as a collaboration from the middle of 2005. The administrative structure of the Centre has been put into place and is functioning well, with Executive Meetings held every two months; and annual meetings of the Advisory Board, Scientific Advisory Board and the Intellectual Property Sub-Committee.

CXS was officially declared open by the University of Melbourne Vice Chancellor, Professor Glynn Davis, at a ceremony on April 19; the date of the first Advisory Board Meeting.

Among the 42 Referred publications produced by CXS members, one featured as a cover article in Nature Physics. All our publications were in the fields of theoretical and condensed matter physics, optical and laser physics, biophysics, quantum chemistry, biochemistry, and radiation and matter.

CXS members were invited to speak at 25 national and international symposiums, conferences, universities and research facilities. We were host to 11 international visitors and conducted four interdisciplinary workshop of our own.

Media and commercialisation activities have commenced, with articles on CXS research appearing in Nature Physics and the La Trobe University Bulletin. A series of articles also appeared in the CXS newsletter, In Coherence, as part of our media initiative. Presentations to school and media exposure has added to the public’s awareness of CXS, and we made eight presentations to outside organizations.

CXS has broadened its funding base with members attracting over $2M in additional support.

The purchase of the Ultra Fast Laser System, used in the investigation of the nature of non-linear physical processes in laser-molecule interactions, was completed. The laser system and the XUV momchromator are housed at Swinburne University of Technology. Translation Stages and the CCD Camera package were also purchased to accompany the Ultra Fast Laser System.

The Experimental Methods Program at La Trobe University has established a new microfabrication facility including: basic labware and chemicals, water purification and convection oven, spin coater, ultrasonic bath and fume hoods, and computer controlled dual sputtering and RIE system was obtained to complement the existing Electron-Beam Lithography System.

The new Coherent Scattering Studies Laboratory, located in room D013 (basement) of the School of Physics at the University of Melbourne, is now operational.

Research carried out within the TCMP group in 2006 can be classified into two general areas: imaging of condensed matter systems and the dynamics of dilute gas BECs. This work has resulted in eight publications in international refereed journals and ten conference contributions. Assoc Prof Les Allen delivered invited talks at the 19th Australian Conference on Microscopy and Microanalysis in Sydney and at the workshop on Electron Microscopy: Fundamental Limits and New Science at Cornell University. Les Allen was also an invited lecturer at a summer school on the fundamentals of electron microscopy organized by the Kavli Institute at Cornell. Dr Andy Martin gave three invited University seminars (University of Bristol, University of Birmingham and the University of Nottingham) and one contributed talk at the AIP 17th National Congress. In addition Dr Nick Parker presented the groups work at an invited seminar at the ANU as well as giving a contributed talk at the AIP 17th National Congress. Dr Scott Findlay delivered an invited talk at a congress in Chicago, Illinois on Materials Research in an Aberration Free Environment.

The group was funded by two continuing Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Projects worth $145,000 in 2006. The DP grants have enabled the continuing appointment of two postdoctoral research fellows in the group, namely Dr Scott Findlay and Dr Nicholas Parker.

Strong international collaborations have been a feature of the research done. Links are in place with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the SuperSTEM Facility at Daresbury, Trinity College Dublin, Nottingham University, Imperial College London, McMaster University, The University of Otago, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (with the group of Nobel Prize winner Prof. W. Ketterle) and the University of Durham.

At the end of 2005, the TPP group and the School of Physics said a kind of farewell to Dr Girish Joshi as he entered “retirement” after about 35 years service. By late 2006, we began anticipating the impending “retirement” of Professor Bruce McKellar also. In both cases the word “retirement” is enveloped in scare quotes, because they both shall remain very active in research. Indeed, in Girish’s case the activity is not only in research but also in teaching as he continues to lecture Honours year level general relativity. To celebrate their remarkable and long careers, we organized a two-day Festschrift that was held on 29 and 30 November 2006 at the School of Physics. Attended by about 35 colleagues and former students from Australia and abroad, we enjoyed a programme of stimulating talks concentrating on theoretical particle physics but also crossing over into condensed matter physics and quantum computation. We were also fortunate to hear a fascinating public lecture by Professor Rajaraman of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi on nuclear disarmament in South Asia. The proceedings will be published by World Scientific both as a book and as a special issue of International Journal of Modern Physics A.

The first stage of life after Bruce and Girish saw the arrival of Dr Nicole Bell as a new Lecturer at the end of December 2006. Nicole is an expert on particle cosmology and astrophysics, with particular expertise in neutrino physics and dark matter. She also maintains an interest in straight particle physics. After completing her PhD in the School in 2000, she spent three years in the theoretical astrophysics group at the Fermilab accelerator laboratory near Chicago, and the last two years as a Sherman Fairchild Postdoctoral Scholar at Caltech. Along the way she picked up a number of prestigious awards, including the Bragg Gold Medal for Excellence in Physics from the Australian Institute of Physics for the best physics PhD thesis authored at an Australian university in 2000, a second prize at the Young Researchers Competition in Honor of John Archibald Wheeler in Princeton, the Alvin Tollestrup Award at Fermilab and the Michelson Postdoctoral Prize Lectureship at Case Western Reserve University. Her post-postdoctoral career has started quickly as she is already supervising a PhD student and an Honours student. We welcome her, and look forward to great achievements in the future. The second stage of life after Bruce and Girish depends on

the appointment of a third continuing academic within the group. An offer has been made, and we are awaiting the outcome.

We congratulate both Kristian McDonald and Catherine Low who completed their doctoral theses in 2006. Kristian is now a research fellow in the School, while Catherine has moved back to her native New Zealand to pursue a high school teaching career. We also welcome Dr Archil Kobakhidze, who joined the group as a research fellow in October 2006.

Research-wise, the group continues to thrive. Topics active during 2006 included orbifold symmetry breaking, brane-worlds and extra dimensions, B-physics, high-energy neutrino astrophysics, many-body neutrino physics, extensions of the Standard Model and leptogenesis.

PPSS >POSTGRADUATE PHYSICS STUDENT SOCIETY (PPSS)

DR STUART WYITHE

Within the School of Physics, postgraduate research is an integral part of all research areas. Physics postgraduates are therefore integrated into School life at all levels. For example, the crucial role played by students in the research success of the School is highlighted during the weekly postgraduate seminar series. This series serves to inform the School as a whole of individual research programs.

In addition, the seminar series offers our students valuable experience in scientific and oral presentation skills. Postgraduate students are also integrated into the day-to-day workings of the School through representatives on each of the Schools committees. Postgraduate student participation on School committees is coordinated by the Postgraduate student society, and aims to ensure that postgraduate student needs are met at all levels.

The School aims to assist postgraduates with the skills they will need to successfully complete their degree and to move forward in the future. To prepare postgraduate students to make the most of their time within the department, the School conducts an induction day, where the roles and perceptions of students and supervisors alike, as well as the requirements of postgraduate study are discussed.

The School organises a focus day for senior postgraduate students to assist with the transition out of postgraduate study. The School also recognises the importance of bridging the gap between undergraduate and postgraduate study. To this end the School organises a Postgraduate student research exhibition. This exhibition showcases the work of our postgraduates to interested second and third year physics students.

Each of the above activities was undertaken during 2006. As a new initiative in 2006, the School expanded the postgraduate seminar series to include a full colloquium by final year students, describing the work presented in their thesis. This final colloquium provides the opportunity for the School to celebrate the achievements of postgraduate students.

Postgraduate Physics Students Society Ball, 2006

ANDREW MARTIN (PPSS President 2006)

The Postgraduate Physics Student Society (PPSS) is an association of which each postgraduate degree student is automatically a member. It is affiliated with the University of Melbourne Postgraduate Association, which formally provides funding for the range of activities the PPSS undertakes, though the School of Physics significantly supports the PPSS both financially and logistically.

The purposes of the PPSS are to enhance the academic and professional life of its members, encourage social interaction of students within the School, to co-ordinate representation of School of Physics Postgraduate students on School committees and to represent School of Physics Postgraduate Students to the Science Faculty and University. Additionally, the PPSS creates leadership positions for its members, enhancing skills prior to entering formal employment.

In 2006, these goals were achieved by running numerous social events, including a BBQ, a trivia night, pool competition and a soiree. A large number of postgraduate students in physics participated in these events, making them a great success. On the more formal side, student attendance at the various School committee meetings was high, indicating the enthusiasm of postgraduate students to participate in the running of School and the business of the University that affects the School.

In 2007 the PPSS aims to continue fulfilling these duties, and with the enthusiastic group of volunteers in office bearer roles and on committees, the coming years should be quite productive.

PHYSICS IN SERVICE DAY

This professional development day consists of 5 sessions relevant to teachers of VCE Physics. It is designed to keep teachers aware of developments in physics, expand their horizons, and assist them in keeping up to date with the current high schools physics syllabus.

The new study design for VCE Physics has seen the inclusion of special relativity, the synchrotron and photonics to the syllabus, areas traditionally outside the experience of many teachers. The In-service provided specialist speakers in these areas along with recent PhD graduate teachers who discussed their approaches to these topics.

MUPPETS

MUPPETS stands for Melbourne University Physics Promotion, Education &Teaching Services

From July 10-14, 2006 the WARP team hit Traralgon, entertaining hundreds of Grade 5/6 children within a 100km radius.

We set up at the St Paul’s Campus of Lavalla Catholic College on Grey St, using their fabulous auditorium.

During the week of August 21 – 25 a dedicated team of physics graduate students and staff took the WARP Physics and Laser Show to the western suburbs. The “Out West Tour” was located at the Altona North campus of Bayside Secondary College, and about 1500 year-5/6 students from 22 local schools were bussed in.

The show was presented in inimitable style by Roger Rassool, who was assisted by Chris Witte. Nick Nicola and Steve Mitchell did an excellent job keeping the equipment intact and working, and an enthusiastic group of graduates and senior undergraduates composed the off-stage support.

It was, as usual, a delight to see the absolutely positive response of the students to the demonstrations. It is clear to the team that we not only succeed in showing that Science can be fun, but that the students leave on a high, with a better understanding of some basic physics phenomena.

Each school was presented with a “show bag” containing, amongst other things, a collection of simple experiments for the teacher use in class, and the components of a diffraction-grating spectrometer for each student to build.

We believe that the program is achieving its aim of interesting students in Science at an early age, so as to broaden their choices as they progress through the school system. The program continues to be supported through the Colonial Foundation. In total, over 5000 students have taken part in such activities for 2006.

Alumni & Friends >DAVID CARO BUILDING

In December 2006, the School of Physics was renamed the David Caro building in honour of Professor David Caro (AO OBE FInstP, FAIP, FACE) whose valuable life-long contributions to national university life and the international physics community were formally acknowledged.

David Caro was made professor of experimental physics and Head of School in 1961 during the days when Physics was still located in what is now known as Old Physics. He oversaw the design and planning of the "new" physics building at its current site.

Along with Assoc Prof John Rouse, they were the first to design a variable energy cylcotron, the first of its kind in Australia. This spearheaded the research in experimental particle and nuclear physics in Australia and was instrumental in providing the country with a talented crop of highly trained experimental physicists over the next decade.

DONATIONS and SUPPORT

The School continues to acknowledge the support of the Mr Andrew Brookes of the Colonial Foundation. They have generously provided $360,000 over 3 years to expand Dr Roger Rassool's and Assoc Prof Max Thompson's Outreach activities.

The School was also pleased to announce two new postgraduate prizes: Klein Prize in Experimental Physics and the CiSRA Prize in Physics.

The Klein Prize was set up by Emeritus Professor Tony Klein (former Head of School 1987-1995), Victor and Fleur Spitzer and Naomi Kaldor.

The CiSRA Prize was supported by Canon Information Systems Research Australia by Dr Stephen Hardy and Dr Ian Gibson.
