PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Over one thousand students from 337 public, parochial, and private schools, from grades 7 through 12, competed for recog-nition in The Scholastic Art Awards of New Hampshire on January 6th and 7th. This prestigious program recognizes the impor-tance of fostering creative expression and artistic achievement in our schools.

The program celebrates its eighteenth year under the administration of a newly formed non-profit organization and is a regional affiliate of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, Inc., and has become a significant part of New Hampshire school art education programs. The National Association of Secondary School Principals also recognizes the 2017-2018 Scholastic Art Awards of New Hampshire.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were established in 1923 by Maurice Robinson, founder of Scholastic Inc., an educational company. Supported by grassroots ef-forts of 116 regional organizations, the Awards have grown into the largest and longest running recognition program for young people in the United States. In 2017, young artists and writers were granted over $1,000,000 in scholarships and prizes through the program. Alumni of the Awards include some of the coun-try’s leading artists and writers, including Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Joyce Carol Oates, Sylvia Plath, Philip Pearlstein, Paul Newman and Richard Avedon.

Students from all over the United States submit work in each region in sixteen visual art categories, with the regional GK recipients forwarded to New York in mid-February for national judication. The National Awards ceremony and exhibition will take place in June in New York City with a Gold Medal ceremony in Carnegie Hall.

In the New Hampshire Regional competi-tion, seven panels of three adjudicators rec-ognized 946 individual awards, including 263 Gold Key awards, which will represent New Hampshire at the national competi-tion. 296 Silver Keys and 387 Honorable Mentions were also awarded. The three divisions for students entering work are Group 1: Grades 7 and 8; Group 2: Grades 9 and 10; and Group 3: Grades 11 and 12. All individual pieces of art, and the art and photography portfolios, are submit-ted in digital form for adjudication.

Each panel previews all of the work, projected as digital images, during a silent adjudication period to guage the overall standard of the submissions. Each piece of art is then projected individually to the panels. A majority vote by the panel during a blind and silent adjudication process is needed for a work to receive award recognition.

1. ORIGINALITYJurors look for works that reveal an original approach to process, concept and subject matter. Jurors look for work that transcends the parameters of a “classroom assignment.” Exploration of materials, techniques and/ or themes reflects the in-put of the student in the creative process.

2. TECHNICAL SKILLJurors look for mastery of a particular medium. Technical proficiency may vary by the medium, grade group, and by the quality of the overall group of works sub-mitted for adjudication.Jurors look for inventive application of techniques and are sensitive to works that demonstrate the artists’ willingness to take risks and to experiment with materi-als, form and content.

3. EMERGENCE OF PERSONAL STLYE OR VISION

Jurors look for evidence of theemergence of an individual’s ar-tistic vision or style and the visual ex-pression of tone, form, critical thinking and conception. Jurors look for work that represents a sense of the student or works that are individualistic in their presenta-tion, execution or ideas. Jurors might ask, “Seeing this work, do I feel I can under-stand something about the artist who created it?”

THE GOLD KEY PORTFOLIOSThe criteria for judging portfolios is the same as for individual entries. In addi-tion, judges select portfolios that that represent a series of eight distinct works that communicate a single cohesive idea or visual investigation. Works can be from one category or any combination of indi-vidual categories; include a solid core of work; make a personal statement and/ or demonstrate the student’s level of artistic development. All nominated portolios will be sent to the national competition in New York City where they will compete for addional scholarships.
