Gig on the GrassOn Sunday 26th April, our first mini festival ‘Gig on the Grass’ was held on our Newton Rigg Campus. Students from Penrith and Lancaster turned up to enjoy the event as well as music lovers from the local community. A garden stage was set up outside on the grass and an acoustic stage was set up inside our student bar The Gin Case. The sun came out and the day ended up being very enjoyable to all. Organisers had done a great job finding all of the talented bands and solo artists from around the area who played during the day. The night was carried through to a late night set from Carlisle’s Lockdown DJ’s. We would like to say a huge thanks to all the bands and artists who played, and also to everyone who made the day such a success! Lets hope we have more events like this to come.

ALWAYS REMEMBER.......We, The University of Cumbria Students’ Union are here to enhance the student experience for ALL students . If you have any ideas of what you want to get up to pop into your nearest S.U. office and have a chat with us about it.

Volunteering opportunities

We’re looking to launch READ Book Project (Cumbria) at the University of Cumbria in October 2009. The READ Book project is a very new, national award winning, student founded and entirely student volunteer-led project operating at university campus’s around the UK.

We will collect books from secondary schools throughout the North West of England during the 2009/10 academic year. We’ll sort them and send the most relevant and best quality to school kids in Tanzania, in Summer 2010. We’ll aim to collect 40,000 books and ship 25,000 books. We will need to run fundraising events to raise enough cash to achieve such an awesome project. We’ll be

aiming to raise £7,500 by Summer 2010. We will also deliver school workshops and presentations to schools.

We’re looking for outgoing, fun, driven, and motivated students to take on this project and launch it at University of Cumbria. You’re probably interested in International Development, education/teaching and maybe even, wouldn’t mind the idea of actually going to Tanzania in August 2010 to do the distribution.

Please email Emma at [email protected] if you are interested

Dear Trish

“ How do I figure out my degree grade?”

Generally speaking, half of your module marks (not usually including your first year marks) need to be in the classification group and the average of all the marks also needs to be in that group.

70% plus = First (I)60%-69% = Two one (II i) 50%-59% = Two two (II ii)40%-49% = Third (III)

So, for example, if you have 16 modules in your second and third year, and at least 8 of your marks are between 50 and 60 and an average

of all your marks are between 50 and 60 then it is likely that you will gain a Two two class degree. If you are confused and want to talk about your degree classification further then please don’t hesitate to contact the Students’ Union advice Service on [email protected]

If you want to ask Trish about any of your problems please contact her on any of the following methods.

UCSU Sport

The university of Cumbria Student’s Union, Carlisle, Men’s basketball team claimed the 2008/09 BUCS Basketball league championship with a 76-63 victory over the University of Sunderland Men’s 2nd team at a packed Fusehill Street sports centre.Carlisle surged to an early lead through precise attacking and the brilliant defending of Andrew Piper and Nessan McQuaid. The game featured inspiring attacking performances by Curt Stansborough and Craig Bourner, who racked up 34 and 20 points respectively. The team needed a win against Sunderland to guarantee the championship.Sunderland did well to put up a fight towards the end of the game but Carlisle proved to be to strong for them in what turned out to be a brilliant team performance.A win for the University of Sunderland

would have seen them finish joint first with Carlisle and the University of Durham, leaving the championship to be decided by points difference. In any such case Durham would have been the probable winners as they have racked up more than 200 more points than their rivals. The win hasn’t guaranteed

promotion for Carlisle. Two teams have been relegated from BUCS’s Northern Conference Premier division so play offs will be necessary for all the promotion places.

Martin Dodd, Student Executive Officer

Carlisle, said, “Doing what they have done on their first season has been astounding and many associated with the Student Union sports teams from all campuses has passed on their congratulations today”
