COVER STORY

By Adam Donaghey

As you walk into The Green Parrot a maze of painted dockscover an ocean floor and the walls are plastered with seascapemurals. Local artist Gary Holman, who's responsible for wall artall over Clear Lake and Houston, painted the restaurant fromtop to bottom. The wood flooring, painted to look like theocean, was added during the post-Ike restoration process―fit-ting, given the establishment flooded with six feet of waterduring the hurricane.

As you follow the wooden pathway through the main din-ing area, you pass through a set of French doors and findyourself inside the bar area, complete with a huge horseshoebar and a full-sized darts area. Saddle up to the bar and enjoydollar drafts or $5 pitchers all day, everyday. Tuesday thru Sat-urday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and all day Sunday, enjoy $2longnecks and $3 wells. Additional Sunday specials include $5Jagerbombs and $2.50 Margaritas. Join in for Texas Hold'emevery Tuesday and Thursday or catch sporting events on theeasy-to-see flat screen.

The bar also features direct service to a large backyard patio, opening up the restaurant to the sunny weather. Sit outside

and enjoy live musicevery weekend, withacoustic sets everySunday from 1 p.m.to 5 p.m. and variouslive bands every Fri-day and Saturdayfrom 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.During the evening, when the area is reallyrocking the patio turnsinto a dance floorwhere you can moveunder the stars. Withplenty of room for thekids and comfortableoutdoor seating, theprivate patio is a popu-lar spot to share apitcher of beer or sipon tropical drinksamidst the beautifulsunny weather.

Amazing art, exoticambiance and mouth-watering drinks aregreat for a long, lazyafternoon. But at somepoint, hunger painsstart to kick in. Tuesday

thru Saturday enjoy $5 lunch specials, with a different featureddish every day, plus new, every day lunch prices. Favoritedishes available all the time include half-pound cheeseburgersmade to order, shrimp, chicken fried steak, rib-eye, and seasonalcrawfish.

Expanded menu coming soon in mid-June will include ahuge seafood platter, perfect for sharing, with local, wildcaught fried Gulf catfish, fried shrimp, coconut shrimp, crabballs, and fried crawfish tails. Or order most platter items sepa-rately, as appetizers. Additional new seafood items include crabcakes, cold boiled shrimp and shrimp cocktail; new sandwichesinclude the patty melt and pulled pork sliders; and other newappetizers include stuffed jalapenos and chicken, beef, cheese,or chili nachos.

Summer is here so take full advantage of The Green Parrot'stropical facility. Private parties and group functions are alwayswelcome and there's designated parking for bikers! The GreenParrot is Located on the San Leon peninsula at 2233 EastBayshore Drive. For more information, please call 281-339-1392or visit the MySpace page at www.myspace.com/green_par-rot_bar_grill.

LOOSE NOTES From Page 57

HOLY MOLY:We got our orders fromthe assignment desk to check outPinches and about the same time,Manny (the Ronnie Wood of events) in-vites us out to a "party" they're having.Gadzooks! With over a ton of street fightcrawfish and nearly 400 of his closestfriends and friend present, the annualJason Danforth soiree outgrew previousvenues and took over the Pinche's park-ing lot. Folks, it is *serious* when NewOrleans natives come here for theircrawfish. Get the idea? Musically, theGuppies from Outer Space did just thatputting their twist on familiar hits musiclovers appreciate. They need a livealbum to go along with Mark May's Livein Texas CD for our cruising collection. Ifthe scene wasn't over the top enough,Marty Monte and Magazine serenadedthe masses with an acoustic play list thatwas totally new to us. Marty says play-ing acoustic allows him more songs tochoose from, which they do exactly.Three days into the busiest weekend ofthe month, plops the exclamation pointat the annual Oleanders party hosted byAndy and Vicki Upchurch. With 300+ oftheir closest friends and neighbors drop-ping by, this annual celebration was a fa-vorite of the late Jim Shortt – and ours, too – as a place for making new friendsand visiting with friends of old amidstthe music. Winter might have wonkedthe flora this last year but the music wasbetter than ever with Andy and theDreamsicles, Funksion, andWhat Is Hip.All of this gets back to our coastal loveand mention that down the road, willbe the annual Parrot Head's Riddles inthe Sand July 22 through 25 in Galve-ston, and the Zone 504 Island PartyJune 19th. Loose Notes by Andy EngWhew, what a wild spring! Weather had things cooking in-

doors and out. Free and breezy was the day with Southbound(Steve Johnson & Jim Jones) at the Hilton Pool. Over on EgretBay, all the snowbirds returned home and the Cockeyed Seagullwas cranking it outand loud with TailDraggers, Abra-ham's Tree, and theThursday NightJams. The Boda-cious Tata's grandslammed the placewith Chris Elliott, Sal-vador Trevino andthe percussion mon-ger duo of BryanBroussard and HollyThrailkill strongerthan ever. Keep anear out, last year'sHourglass show at the Seagull was a good one and word isthey'll be out in the area again soon. Hey, if you're ever rundown and needing a boost, go find Madigan. This month, theywere flipping everybody's frenzy switch into overdrive at Sher-lock's. Come to think of it, these folks seem to do this every-where they go. Complete with one of the finest traveling soundand light crews in the area, these shows are continually tops.Scout Bar treated a full house to something completely differentwith the Memorial Day Hellapalooza Show. Over at Cullen's Liveon Thursday nights the bands are battling for house gig honorsand *really* getting after it. Thiswill be going on a few moreweeks, so check it out. The newvenue on the beat this month isJudge's. We ordered food anddrink and got that plus; a greatview, sand between our toes, breezy music from Island Partyand super swell service.

LOOSE NOTES Continued From Page 58

We want to thank Marcia and the Alibi's for treating us tosee the Leon Russell show, with the Zach Tate Band opening,at the 18th Street Pier. Leon doesn't dance on the piano like heused to but the man still has a set of pipes. Better yet, Leon'sgot got a super bunch of fans on the SCENE and amongst thebest to hang out with.

ABOUT THE SONG: Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) said rock &roll cycles 15 years before repeating. Fast forward to now, artists

are ever tinkeringthe genres into whatwe hear today. Start-ing with a solidblues, Otis Futher-mucker filled theWood & Wind'sKemah Jam with a"Ghengis Khan Lib-eral" interpretationof the blues -- Hearthitting, respectful in-your-face lessons, leaves you loving it.Later in the evening,T-Bone's own KatieMuccilli made herstage debut withsome of the betterlyrics I've heard yetfrom local writerslately, save ChrisCrump, who so far isone of our highwater marks. Ob-serving good song

writing develop over years is cool, and we partook of this at KellyMcGuire's Up Close and Personal show with Michele and JohnLaw returning from Canada to Club Classic. We puzzled placingthe Laws until Michelle Hill clued us on "Believe our Love" fromtheir first album. From there, the duo solidifies and carries forth in

subsequentalbums,"Two" and"Ride it Out"-- Instrumen-tally melodi-ous, lyricallycoherent, alltogether co-hesive, notmany songwritersdemonstrate this. (Side note: Brad has the place looking good. We'll be back!) No surprise folks, we enjoy Paul Thorn's musicand story. With an ever-growing Houston fan base, the "gen-

uine Southern paradox"from Tupelo stopped by foran evening at Houston'sHouse of Blues. We arrivedearly scoping out the neigh-borhood, eateries, architec-ture and recommend thisitinerary to those from the

Lake. The Mighty Orq was theopener and of course the eveningincluded teasers from his upcoming album "Pimps and Preach-ers". Speaking of good lyrics, Scout Bar delivered nicely bringingin FUEL with Bret Scallions back on lead vocals. With Tennesseeroots, this American alternative hard-rock post-grunge band

PACKED the Scout Barwith "mainstream" likefans ;-). FUEL song-writer, Carl Bell may havemoved on, yet his songsplay on.

The Texas Beer Enthusiast | Enjoying, Brewing & Selling Beer in the Lone Star State

Texas Beer Enthusiast

Usually someone shouldering an icechest into a hotel bar is as welcome as aHappy Meal at a steak house.

For many entering the hotel off Bay AreaBoulevard in Webster on a Tuesday in May,the cooler isn’t a devil-may-care attitudethat provides individualized transportationvia the blue taxi or opens doors to jail cells. The cooler holds a higher sense of self, oth-erwise known as home brew.

The group known as the Mashtronautshas staged its monthly coup d’etat, takingover the hotel bar for their meeting wheretwo speakers can barely be heard over thecrowd’s murmur. Disrespect for what theyhave to say isn’t the case; it’s what’s beingshared in a case of glasses which providesthe vessels for the evening’s offerings.

Whilevery fewpeoplewouldbring beerinto a bar,an evensmallernumberwould besothoughtfuland for-ward-thinkingto bringglasses.

This is not a crowdthat settles for asleeve of plastic cupsor swilling beer fromsleek, over-marketedaluminum or plasticbottles. Their beerdoes not come fromlarge factories, a cor-porate product withadvertising worthmillions. The pre-cious cargo comesfrom their homes, made by their ownhands based on arecipe surely tweakedand labored over.

These are the Mashtronauts, whosemembership includes some who have ca-reers in aerospace, chemical engineeringand the realm of finance. What makesthem a tribe is their unquenchable passionfor their beers, ales and pilsners that rivalspeople who get paid to do so.

“For other groups, the goal is to becomea brewmaster and work somewhere; formost of the people here, they’d have totake a pay cut,” said Michael Wiley, whohelped found the club back in 1991.

The membership came from a bunch ofaerospace workers who were transferredto the NASA Johnson Space Center from allacross the country. A by-chance gatheringat a wine-making establishment gave birth

to a brew clubwhen many ofthe newbies toTexas vocalizedan urgent needfor home brew.

“That place –Wines Etc. -- ex-panded intohome brew be-cause of the de-mand,” saidWiley. “It wasDecember of

1991 when wefirst made mead.”

Wiley is known as “The Force” because ofhis status as an original and his job of be-stowing nicknames upon members. Unlike“Animal House,” there are no D-Days, Floun-ders or Pintos here. All the names usuallyhave a link to JSC, Star Wars or technology, especially the group’s officers: Mission Com-mander, Pilot, Payload Specialist, Capcom,Data Input Specialist and Science Officer.

For guys content with the current stateof your man cave, business operationsmanager Scott Riehm has a 1,000-squarefoot “man apartment.” It’s all about the beerin the space above his garage, where hehas four taps, a 26 cubic-foot freezer forcold storage and two fermentation freezersfor his lagers. If that wasn’t enough, he canalways fall back on the two taps that hehas inside the house.

Launching off with the Bay Area MashtronautsHouston... we have beer!

Caesar Gonzalez, John Hearn and KennethAucoin relish the evening's samplings.

“I’ve probably got about 50 gallons ofbeer at the house that’s tapable,” he said.

With his frayed LSU cap, the affable “X-Box” knows he’s got it good. His wife -- “an absolute angel” – doesn’t even drinkand she lets him brew every three weeksfor friends and neighbors.

“Where I used to live – I just moved re-cently – I’d open my garage and myneighbors would go in and out gettingsome beer after working in the yard allday,” Riehm said.

“It’s a way to make friends and becomefamily.” Or perhaps become the most pop-ular neighbor around.

Home brewing is a family affair for hus-band Hugh Lomas and his wife NormaBrake who have been members for thelast few years but making their own forthe last 30. Lomas, who works in the aero-space business, said home brewing pro-vides a much needed outlet from the dayjob. He’s not like some of the Type A per-sonalities here, he said.

“Let me tell you, after making really bigdecisions during the week, I am not goingto get wrapped around the axle over abottle of beer,” said the mustached bigman.

Even as he describes his involvement inhome brew, the need to comment on apoured sample interrupts his ownthoughts in an interjection that was almostrude to himself: “Oh my gosh, was thatraspberry pecan?”

Proper protocol is always respected forthe inter-center competition that has takenplace for the last four years, courtesy of thevideo conferencing software from the JetPropulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. This is non-NASA business with a lot of per-sonal pride on the line.

As some of those Type A’s would have it,a brewing competition takes place via livestreaming video from JSC and the God-dard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt,Maryland. Enough beer is provided to JSCand Goddard from the entrants at Ames,Marshall and Glenn centers.

“They watch and we judge,” said

Lomas.

The trophy, which was won by theMashtronauts, is a mini-diorama, seem-ingly of the gray lunar landscape. The fig-ure of an astronaut approaches the foot ofa lunar lander that on second glance is ac-tually an outhouse.

“That’s actually the traveling trophy,”Lomas said. “The real trophy should be achamber pot – something functional anddecorative.”

On July 31, the Mastronauts hope toget their mitts on the state title for the thirdtime in a row at their own Lunar Ren-dezbrew XLVII. The group’s only fund-rais-ing event will be at the Bay AreaCommunity Center at Clear Lake Park. Awin on the penultimate event of the LoneStar home brew Circuit would clinch athree-peat that Pat Riley or Augie Buschwould be proud of.

For many members, prepping for theevent will mean getting a few batches inahead of time for most don’t brew afterJune. The heat makes it too tough to con-trol conditions.

Unless you’re Jeff “Stumpy” Oberlin, a

self proclaimed “chemist by training and achemical engineer by faking it.”

Some call home brew a hobby; I call it alifestyle,” said Oberlin, who is far fromStumpy. Having earned many brewer ofthe year titles throughout the state, he hasan unwavering focus on making beer.

His commitment to beer has kept himfrom building his house because he saidhe needs a six-car garage with room fortwo cars and the rest for beer.

Oberlin goes as far as to rebuild waterand utilize heat exchange to craft hisaward-winning creations. He utilizes a re-verse osmosis system, redesigns pots andpumps and ferments at different tempera-tures, often controlled to the degree.

“I do thing that breweries can’t because Ihave smaller amounts,” he said. “They lookfor profit and I am looking for perfection.”

For the Mastronauts, beer is an excuseto get together or perhaps an opportunityto reach for the stars. That person carryingan ice chest into a hotel might not be anover-aged frat boy but a perfectionist try-ing to get back control in his life one bottleat a time.

GOOD KARMA MENTION: Several super benefitswere happening around the SCENE this month. We wit-nessed great support at the Brenda Terry Benefit at Katie'sand for the Dallas Webb Fundraiser at Hugh and Jeff's.Interestingly, these benefits were for those who have con-sistently given their time and service helping others, makes this mention neat. Thrill Hill and the Real Deal,Bennie Brasket, the Katie's House Rockers, 4 Barrel Ram-blers were bands we spotted where it was about the giv-ing. Over at Heads & Tails, the Sam Trevino KidneyPalooza Benefit was going strong with friends and familyarriving from across the nation. Area band Mama Tried andEqual People from Corpus Christi put forth inspired sets of ben-efit magic. Vallejo and Stage 11 traveled in from the farthest

In lieu of worshipping the sun to createthat golden tan, try a spray-on tan. Theyare wonderfully easy to use and the color isrich and not unnatural looking. Mystic Tanand Versa Tan both use a bronzer and DHAcombined to get an instant glow that getsdarker over 4-6 hours. They have minimalodor, and allow you to choose 3 differentlevels of color making this the perfect toolfor those who want to stay out of the sun! Many tanning salons also provide moisturiz-ers to help extend your tan for 5-7 days. I

use California Sunless Tanning spray for in-between maintenance.

Here are my tips for making sure you geta great spray-on tan that lasts!

• Shower, shave and exfoliate the bodyand apply lotion the day beforehand. TheDHA in these products work on your outerlayer of skin, so sloughing off old skin willhelp it remain longer.

• Wear black, loose fitting clothing toyour tanning session. Bronzer can get onclothing, but it will wash out since it is notactual dye.

• Apply barrier cream to your hands andfeet and keep your palms facing away fromthe sprayer. Be sure to wear little slippers onyour feet so your soles don’t turn brown.Dry off your face and the back of your legsfirst, then rest of body. Air dry for about 5minutes before getting dressed.

• Wait at least 4-6 hours before shower-ing. Rinse. Apply a shimmery lotion, andAHHHH!!!!!! Gorgeous skin!

Take care of the skin you’re in, you onlyget one shot! Have a safe, healthy andhappy summer!

Anita’s Cut Above introduces Brazilian Karatin TreatmentAnita’s Cut Above, located at 2660 Marina Bay Drive in

League City, recently began offering the Brazilian Karatin Treat-ment.

This all-natural treatment does not use chemicals. Keratin is anatural substance, which comprises approximately 88 percentof our hair. This system penetrates the hair repairing internaldamage and coats the hair preventing further damage result-ing in smooth, silky, shiny, frizz free hair.

The process takes about two hours (depending on length ofhair), and is affordable bringing the price of silky straight, frizz-free locks down. It can be used on any type of hair – dyed or high-lighted – no problem. Though, it’s recommended that you color orhighlight your hair prior to this treatment.

This system is gentle enough, it can be used on children. It doesnot require neutralizer or immediate rinse, and blends naturallywith the growth of hair. Because of this, it is not meant to be per-manent, and it does require reapplication approximately every

three months.

On July 1, Anita’s Cut Above will choose one lucky winner intheir Brazilian Karatin give away. Call, email or stop by to learn howto enter.

For more information on Anita’s Cut Above, call 281-334-3000or email [email protected].

Sort of a filmmakers and industry onlyclub, mumblecore describes naturalistic, highly improvised low-budget films thatstarted popping up at SXSW circa 2005.COLD WEATHER marks a different ap-proach to the oddly coined genre in thatit's shot beautifully on the RED ONE andmixes in a mystery element, giving the filma richer, more intense, feel. At the sametime, the mystery element is really, and bril-liantly, beside the point―this film is reallydealing with personal relationships of“mumbly” twenty-somethings.

Austin filmmaker and mumblecore actor,Mark Duplass stars in MARS, a film by UTprofessor Geoff Marslett. MARS is an ani-mated feature about a group of laid backastronauts on a mission to land on the redplanet, MARS, amidst a world who doesn'treally care about space travel anymore. Anominous tale of what's to come; basically,it's pretty darn close to the world we live innow. With Kinky Friedman playing himselfas the President of the United States andquirky sub-genius characters playinghighly-skilled astronauts, the film is defi-nitely Austin-based. Marslett actually devel-oped the method of animation used in thefilm. The film has not yet been acquired.

After leaving Maryland this time around,I was greeted at the airport by my sweet-heart and we drove home to Kemah. In anweird sense of justification for the choicesI've made, I've recently become attached toseveral other projects coming up through-

out the year. Even weirder, however, is thefact that AUDREY THE TRAINWRECK, whichpremiered earlier this year at SXSW, will behaving its hometown premiere in Chicagoat the Gene Siskel Film Center this month;while the company I represented doingstorm restoration is also currently inChicago selling exterior services after a hail-storm ravaged the northwest suburbs. I'mreally not sure what that means; but I amcertain I'm too busy to worry about it.

THE SCENE JUNE 201023

By Adam Donaghey

Pizza for me is not just a meal; it's an event. I've always beenprone to shared eating environments as opposed to stand alonedishes. Certainly, a couple of specialty pies and a pitcher of beerwith friends is a social gathering success. You can guess that when Iwas asked by The SCENE to go check out Al Capone's Bar & Grill inWebster, I hopped all over it.

At first glance, Al Capone's looks like your average pizza joint withhalf the establishment being a dining area and the other half a bar.One expects there to be a kitchen with just a pizza oven and a mi-crowave to heat up pub grub apps. But take a look at the menuand you're in for a treat. Sure, there's all sorts of pizzas to whet yourappetite; but also a vast array of Italian appetizers, traditional dishesand sandwiches. Suddenly you realize this is more than a pizzajoint―it's a full-service Italian restaurant. The dishes are made fromscratch, the sauces and dough made in-house, and the quality in-gredients are fresh and delicious.

Al Capone's owner, Rena Head, is no stranger to fine Italian din-ing. An immigrant from the former Yugoslavia, Rena relocated toAmerica forty years ago; but you couldn't tell―her accent is asstrong as ever. Her story here in Galveston started in 1999 whenshe and legendary Tuscan chef, Luigi Ferre, opened up Luigi's onthe Strand. Ten years later, her friend and mentor constructed amenu and shared his secrets before her grand opening of AlCapone's on Saint Patrick's Day in 2009 while Luigi's was undergo-ing repairs from Hurricane Ike.

Just over a year old, today Al Capone's is locally known for itsunique specialty pizzas and delicious pasta. Crowd favorites includetraditional Lasagna, Spaghetti and Meatballs, the Tuscan ChickenSalad, and the heavily hyped, ultimate specialty “Al Capone's SecretVault” pizza. Unlike Geraldo Rivera, this mouthwatering pizza deliv-ers. Toppings include pepperoni, salami, onions, peppers, olives, tomatoes, pineapple, Canadian bacon, mushrooms, jalapenos, gar-lic and Greek pepperoncini.

Summer is heating up, and it’stime once again to get out to thebeach or on a boat to enjoy thesummer sun. The sun can wreak havoc on your skin and if youdon’t take precautions to protect it, you will look older than youryears well before you should! Most of the damage done to yourskin is done in your teens and twenties, it just doesn’t start toshow up until your 40s. Take care of your skin now, it’s never toolate. Sunscreen should be a daily chore just like brushing yourteeth. Men and women alike should apply it to the face, and thehands. The invention of mineral cosmet-ics has sent trends in makeup looks andskin care in a new direction, giving usthe visibly younger, dewy complexions ofthe photos in the magazines. The glowthat these minerals give to the skin is un-paralleled, and it proves that we canwear minimal amounts of make up andstill look refreshed and well rested.

The priming of the skin should be themost important step in your skin care rit-ual. No matter how much make upyou are going to wear on a given day,you should still prepare the skin the same way. This will notonly keep your make up in place much longer, but it will giveyou a softer, younger and more healthy appearance. Primingthe skin each day will allow your natural glow to shine throughso follow these steps each day to ensure that you have asmooth, taut canvas to work with.

1. Pluck and shape stray brows. A cleanly arched browmakes us look rested and groomed.

2. Cleanse the face using cosmetic wipes. Wipes can dou-ble as an exfoliant due to the texture. They also remove all tracesof leftover makeup or the oils that collect on our pillows at night.

3. Rinse and tone. Even the wipes leave traces of surfac-tants that can easily be removed with a quick swipe of toner.Toner also hydrates and refreshes.

4. Smooth on a hydrating or moisturizing creme tosooth dryness and give the skin a velvety surface.

5. Take care of your lips! Use a vitamin E stick or balm tosmooth edges, infuse with vitamins and add sheen. Finish offwith a little lip plumper for full, shiny lips.

6. Lastly, use a skin retexturizing product (like HeavenlySkin Retexture) which are silicone-based skin protectants that fillin lines, pores and wrinkles while the smooth-as-glass surfacewill allow make up to glide on with out tugging or blotching.

Lights ... Camera ... Action!It's now officially been a year since I

upped the ante and started doing filmfull time. Oddly enough, the MarylandFilm Festival, which takes place in May,accurately marks this decision. Last year,ST. NICK screened at the festival and Iflew in from Huntsville, Alabama. Uponmy return, I immediately packed my be-longings and drove back to the ClearLake Area. Partly due to the fact that Iwanted to be closer to my sweetheartand partly because the passion for sellingstorm restoration services (yep, that'swhat I used to do) had completely fizzledout and died. Since then, I haven'tlooked back.

This year, EARTHLING, LOVERS OFHATE and MY MOM SMOKES WEED allscreened in Maryland. One of the coolestfilmmaker hangout festivals in the coun-try, the Maryland Film Festival knowshow to show its filmmakers a good time. This year, I got in early enough on Thurs-day to enjoy some of the sights in theMount Vernon Historic District beforeslamming headfirst into films and parties.Strolling through the historic square, Itook a gander at the (original) Washing-ton Monument and ducked into TheWalters Art Museum before meeting upwith friends (including fellow Houston-ian, Kelly Sears!) for a relaxing dinnerwhere I sampled famous Maryland crabcakes and cream of crab soup.

As most of you know already, I'm quitea food lover; and Maryland certainly de-livers. Golden West Cafe once againcatered “Tent City”―the center of festivalhappenings―where the filmmakerslounge and most importantly, where allthe eats and drinks are located. Nonstopcomplimentary made-to-order food anddrink service from around noon to nine isalways a plus. I believe I engulfed three

rare buffalobacon burgers inthree days. Othercomplimentaryfood opportuni-

ties included smoked salmonand mussels at the filmmakers'champagne reception and agluttonous feast of good ole'fashioned barbequed brisketat the closing night party.

Along with gorging myself,I happened to catch some re-ally great films as well. Thescreenings of my films allwent really well and the re-sponse during Q&A was posi-tive. Maryland is anoncompetitive festival and totally laidback, so it's a really great forum to hangout with other filmmakers and see lots offilms you haven't had a chance to checkout. I used this festival to play catch-upand see some films by friends or acquain-tances of mine that I hadn't had achance to catch at Sundance or South BySouthwest.

DADDY LONGLEGS, a film by Joshand Benny Safdie―ultra-DIY filmmakerswith no concern for things like permis-sions or permits―premiered at Cannesand stars fellow filmmaker and friend,Ronnie Bronstein, as Lenny, a fatherwho's mastered the art of making life asdifficult as possible. Needy, helpless anddownright impossible to deal with,DADDY LONGLEGS takes us through ashort annual two week period where thiscompletely devoted yet utterly hapless fa-ther has custody of his two kids. Most in-triguing is the fact that Lenny's characteris based on the Safdie's real-life father. And so, the film is both a subtly empa-thetic character study and a disturbinglysentimental portrait of a reckless and irre-sponsible individual. Distributed throughIFC Films, DADDY LONGLEGS is currentlyin theaters and on demand.

Also picked up by IFC was Aaron Katz'COLD WEATHER, which bowed at SXSWthis year. Katz is often attributed to the es-oteric genre “mumblecore.”

Hilton • From Page 14The lobby’s new floor will be a sparkling

white polished Mamaro marble – the perfectcanvas for the cool blue and gray accentpieces.

The waterside area will be landscaped toproject a seaside feel and the pool area isslated to be renovated this fall.

“We’re opening up a new bar at the poolwhich is almost complete,” says Wev. “We’llhave great drink specials, good food and livemusic.”

Adjacent to the pool you will find theManor Lawnwhere the Manor House previ-ously stood. It is a perfect venue for outdoorweddings and events. “We are the only hotelout here sitting smack dab on Clear Lake sothe views are outstanding,” says Wev.

BetweenWev, Michael Blum (GeneralManager), Rick Galyean (Food and BeverageDirector) and Chad Laundry (Executive Chef),they bring decades of experience to theHilton enterprise.

Luna’s nautical decor has given way to amore modern, open feel with blues andgrays dominating the dining room that offersa water view from every vantage point.

“Our style of cuisine is regional,” says Wev,“but everything has a modern twist. For ex-ample, our Chicken andWaffles. We takesweet potato waffles with candied jalapeno-stuffed grilled chicken and smoked bacon;then top with jalapeno maple syrup.”

On the horizon: Wine dinners and tequiladinners. “Tequila is an artisan drink just likewine,” explains Wev, “and the food courseswill reflect this. We want to give people theopportunity to try new things as well as localwines.”

Luna’s extensive menu and wine list is com-parable to the finest restaurants in the area.On both the lunch and dinner menus youwill find an array of delicious choices. The

trademarked “Hilton Eat Right” section wasexclusively designed to offer exceptional, nu-tritional choices like the Pan-seared BeefMedallion (in tarragon sauce atop a bed ofwild mushroom and barley risotto) as well asthe Grilled Ginger Salmon (with roasted bellpepper, couscous and grilled asparagus).

“We want to become an integral part ofthe community,” says Wev. “We want peopleto think of us as their local place to go. Tocome and enjoy the restaurant, to have theirfriends from out of town stay here. Peopleused to dine at hotels frequently, and we’dlike for that to come back in style. Plus, wehave the best view on the lake.”

Specialty: I specialize in creating robust flavor in dishesranging from fresh seafood to homemade desserts. I pridemyself in my ability to make traditional dishes in a way thatmakes them pop with soul.

Signature Dish:My guests love a variety of dishes frommy menu, but I think that both my Bubba-Q sauce servedover slow-cooked baby back ribs and my New Orleans-styleBBQ shrimp are particularly note worthy. The Bubba-Qsauce is made from scratch and is a house favorite. TheNew Orleans style BBQ shrimp is a combination of corn, potatoes, and gulf shrimp all exploding with sizzling Cajunflavor.

Have you ever prepared a meal for anyone fa-mous or infamous? I've had the honor of cooking formany famous people in my 54 years; although, I do takejust as much pride seeing a regular family loving my food. The following is a list of people I have cooked for andwhere I was when I cooked for them: Coach Bill Walsh and

Joe Montana atBrady's Landing inHouston; BarrySanders, DeaconJones, and theGovernor of Col-orado in Denver atBaby Doe's;Micheal Jordan,Scotty Pippin, David Robinson, and Tim Duncan at the OldSan Francisco Steakhouse in San Antonio; Clay Walker andfamily at Avery's Bayside Cafe in Galveston; Governor RickPerry at Joe's Crab Shack in Galveston and the 1999 MissAmerica beauty pageant.

Please share one special cooking tip or tech-nique with our readers:Most people under seasontheir food when they are cooking and rely on salt and pep-per to bail them out. I recommend trying some fresh spicesand seasonings which are out of your comfort zone. Youcan find suggestions for seasoning combos online. This al-lows you to acquire a repertoire of tastes that will have youcooking with more confidence more frequently. Challengeyourself to eradicate blandness without having to rely solelyon salt and pepper.

Nassau Bay • Continued From Previous Page

“We are in the process of completing our comprehensive five-yearplan right now,” says Reed, “and we are taking a broader look at ourtax base. We might be adding more retail, restaurants, and hospitalprofessionals. MD Anderson has expanded with St. John’s to open itssecond radiation bunker. Their mission is to treat 95% of cancers atthe St. John’s location. Also, they have a fully operational bloodbank.”

Typically done in-house, this is the first time the city has out-sourced their comprehensive five- year plan. But due to the after-math of Ike, the state of the economy and pending NASA budgetcuts, this is one of the most important comprehensive plans to date.

“We’ve had a series of community meetings and more are sched-uled” says Reed. “It’s about a six-month process and we’re about amonth into it.”

A lot of the NASA layoff talks are still up in the air, so the situation isup and down right now. Nassau Bay is primarily comprised of an of-fice/commercial base, which is very much NASA related. Therefore, all businesses that support the NASA programs will be affected.

“We are in a wait and see position right now,” says Reed, “but wecan’t just lie down and give up. We have to look at different ways todiversity our tax base. If that happens (the NASA layoffs) office/com-mercial just won’t be our niche anymore, so we are taking a broaderlook at our tax base and examining what we may need to do to ad-just our plans.”

Griffin Partners is the developer of Town Square and they are en-tirely committed to the project. Reed elaborates: “Prior to NASAbudget cuts announcements, the developer was close to inking thefirst office building, however, the retail/commercial part that you seeup front is already in progress, which is something you rarely see goin first – is usually last. They (Griffin) are developing the commercialend upfront to stimulate the entire project.”

Only eight months into his position, Reed says that manygood economic development tools were put into placelong before he arrived. “Once we get the five-yearplan kicked off and we decide on how we aregoing to diversify, we will be on our way, andthat is exciting!” he proclaims. “We’ve got a lotof incentives to lure new businesses. It’s im-portant to be diverse in a community. Youdon’t want to have too much of onething.”

Although a high percentage ofretired citizens reside in Nassau

Bay, Reed says they are seeing a trend of more children com-ing into the community, so they are looking to expandyouth-related activities. Perry YMCA has been slated totake over the city’s recreation programs. “Their core val-ues are consistent with our community,” says Reed.

“We still have the feel of the ’60s with big frontyards and all the homes have their own individualcharacteristics,” says Reed. “It’s an outgoing commu-nity where people walk their dogs, wave to oneanother and enjoy riding around in golf carts. Our residents appreciate the fact that we haveour own EMS, police department and volun-teer fire department. A city of this size thatis able to maintain that is pretty amaz-ing.”

“For 30 years, I lived and worked in Houston, and my company'sresident training center was located across NASA Parkway fromNassau Bay. During occasional week-long training assignments, Iexplored the community on morning jogs. When I retired in1998, I wanted to move away from the hectic city, and NassauBay was the first place I looked. Now, as then, it has the feel of awell-kept small town. Biking or walking through the community, people wave and often stop to speak. And nearby, we have allthe recreational amenities of Galveston Bay.” - Carl Miller

“We have lived in the bay area for over 30 years and decided tomove to Nassau Bay in 1998. We love it for its convenience towork and shopping; we don’t have to hassle with traffic and it’s agreat place to come home to. It’s quiet, peaceful and pretty withlots of trees and parks. We particularly like being on the lake, see-ing its wildlife, and having the amenities of big city living nearby. The people can't be beat.” - John & Jean Rudnicki

State of the Lake:

Nassau Bay, Still Maintaining its Charm

Luna Restaurant Sets the Trend For Hilton’s New Look

By Sue Mayfield Geiger

The little hamlet of Nassau Bay is about to get bigger. And bigger. And bigger.

But according to City Manager, Chris Reed, one thing is certain:“We won’t lose our charm!”

With the new NASA Bypass heading right into Nassau Bay off I–45and the development of Town Square, big things are happening.Town Square is a 31-acre mixed-use development with three officebuildings, a 176-room Marriott hotel and a 313-unit multi-familyapartment complex for young professionals (60 plus leases have al-ready been signed). Thus far, Town Square will also include: NassauBay City Hall, Texas Citizens Bank, Wings-n-More, Bay Area HoustonEconomic Partnership, Marble Slab, Bullritos, Bakers Street Pub, Five

Guys Burgersand Verizon. “Theidea is that peo-ple can work, live and play in the same area,” says Chris Reed, City Manager.

There will be an identical retail development on the other side of Saturn Lane. Asfor the shopping center on Upper Bay, Reed says they are hoping a revitalization ofthat will happen soon.

Also, the Hilton, (now known as “Hilton Houston NASA Clear Lake”) one of thetop hotels in the area, is in the process of an overhaul. Their new General Managerhas some great innovative ideas, which include making better use of their water-front surroundings. Picturesque Nassau Bay is known for its vast amount of greenspace and parks: Howard Ward Park off Upper Bay; Lake Nassau Park (offering recy-cling containers) with a nearby pocket park; Swan Lagoon Park and Nassau Penin-sula, a 76-acre wetland area and nature preserve. The city sits across the street fromJohnson Space Center, is home to several churches, 19 restaurants, three hotels andhosts many special events, including the upcoming July Fourth fireworks display onthe peninsula.

“The Hilton name is a standard we have to uphold,” says Matt Wev, Luna Restau-rant’s Food and Beverage Manager. “Conrad Hilton set so many trends in the hotelbusiness, so when you carry that flag of being a leader in the industry, you have tokeep your standards high.”

The Hilton in Nassau Bay is living up to those standards as it transitions itself fromtop to bottom with the completion set for the fall of 2011.

From mechanical to electrical to esthetics, this is the biggest overhaul in ten years. The second floor ballroom and Luna Restaurant already have a new look. Work inprogress includes the lobby, first floor ballroom, poolside and grounds.

The 10,000 square foot basement area will house a fitness center and nine meet-ing rooms. The first floor ballroom can accommodate up to 400 whereas the secondfloor ballroom has a more intimate feel and has proven to be a lovely setting for wed-dings due to the panoramic windows showcasing Clear Lake.

Since October of last year, new owners of DickinsonBar~B~Que & SteakhouseKeith and Holly Lilley havetaken great care in creatinga Hill Country environmentright here in the GalvestonBay Area. From little touchesto the stylized Fredericks-burg decor to mouth-water-ing, scratch-made recipes,The Lilleys have reshapedthe establishment into aone-of-a-kind, family diningdestination. Choice cuts atreasonable prices and super-friendly customer serviceround out the experience atthis family-owned and -oper-ated restaurant.

Former president of South-western food chain giant, Cafe Express, Keith Lilley is nostranger to the food service industry. Leaving his secure posi-tion in an effort to fuel his entrepreneurial spirit, Lilley immedi-ately jumped at the opportunity for self-employment in his ownback yard. Taking a hands-on approach, customers will fre-quently see the apron-clad owners buzzing around the restau-rant greeting guests and serving food, ensuring a qualitydining experience in a relaxed, casual atmosphere.

The palette available at Dickinson Bar~B~Que is distinctive andplentiful. It's Texas BBQ is uniquely slow-pecan roasted, providinga mild, sweet flavor. Using the indigenous state tree gives thesmoked meats a genuine Texas feel, packed with rich, complexflavors. Meats include slow smoked sliced or chopped brisket, St.Louis rack ribs, Czech sausage, turkey breast and ham. Pairedwith its regular sauce gives the meat a spicy kick; though amilder sauce is available for a more traditional style and in theworks is a hickory sauce, which will use local wildflower honey.

Not your typical BBQ joint, DickinsonBar~B~Que is a full-fledged steakhouse as well, offering hand-cut, USDA Choice Rib Eye and NewYork Strip steaks, center-cut pork chops, and Nor-wegian salmon filets. Additionally, find Angusburgers, along with a variety of sandwiches, onthe menu. Home-style cooking options for thoselooking for comfort food include hand-battered,chicken-fried steak or chicken, chicken tenders, steak fingers and a catfish platter.

A plethora of fresh, homemade side dishes areoffered and include your basics like coleslaw, potato salad, green beans and baked beans; but also items like jalapeño pintobeans, black-eyed peas, macaroni salad, turnip greens, roastedgarlic mashed potatoes, twice baked potatoes, real mac-n-cheese and other daily and seasonal specials. Add on a gardensalad topped with dressings made in-house or a bowl of a freshmade soup for a full meal. Some daily soups include sausagechicken gumbo, chicken tortilla and homemade chicken anddumplings. And with a chef devoted solely to creating an assort-ment of scratch-made pies, cakes, cobblers, bread and bananapudding, you'll certainly want to leave room for dessert!

Family friendly, Dickinson Bar~B~Que offers “Little WhipperSnapper” meals available for the kiddos for about the cost of aHappy Meal; and there are exterior picnic tables so you andyour family can enjoy the weather outside. Serving food cafete-ria-style allows the entire family to sit back and relax, and itsaves money all around. And you won't want to leave afterhearing an eclectic musical mix of old, classic country, Texasrock and blues.

For the grown-ups, a selection of domestic and importedbeer and wine are available. Having toured Hill Countrywineries extensively, Lilley features some of the finest Texaswines available – including Blanc du Bois from Santa Fe'sown Haak Vineyards.

The museum-like front dining room – complete with redcedar ceiling, handmade shutter boxes and artwork by localmuralist Gary Holman – can be closed off from the rest of therestaurant and is the perfect Hill Country setting for wine tast-ings, private gatherings and special events.
