A Letter from the Headmaster and Chairman of the Board

Dear Friends:

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill

Welcome to Robert Land Academy’s annual Scarlet Parade Gala in support of the Founder’s Scholarship Fund. Over the past nine years, the generous spirit of so many friends of the Academy has provided numerous students with much needed tuition assistance through the Scholarship Fund. We thank you for your attendance this evening and your willingness to “give” to a mission designed to inspire young men to reach their potential. We are grateful to the individuals and organizations that have donated either cash or goods and services for the live and silent auctions, and to our many corporate sponsors. Your commitment to the Academy is truly appreciated. We would also like to acknowledge the volunteers and staff who have willingly given of their time and energy to ensure the Gala’s success. Your loyalty to, and labour on behalf of, the boys of Robert Land Academy does not go unnoticed. We hope that you have an enjoyable evening and, once again, thank you for your ongoing support. With LOYALTY, LABOUR, COURAGE, COMMITMENT and HONOUR, we remain, Respectfully yours,

G.S. Bowman, LCol (Honorary) Founder & Headmaster

J. Markson Chairman of the Board

event shall it be responsible for the correctness of description, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty of description, authenticity, or condition of the property or services sold; no statement in the catalogue or made at the sale or in the bill of sale or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty or representation or an assumption of liability. 11. There can be no tax receipts issued for any items purchased.

12. Individuals must be at least 18 years of age to bid in the silent or live auction, or to purchase raffle tickets.

LIVE AUCTION RULES

1. In order to enter a bid, you must raise your bid paddle high and attract the attention of the auctioneer. This must be repeated each time you initiate or increase a bid. Each bid legally obligates the bidder to pay his or her bid price in full if the bid is deemed the high bid at the final call of the auctioneer. The auction will be fast paced so the bids must be made quickly.

2. You may use the services of the bid spotters to attract the auctioneer's attention. Remember, however, that notifying a bid spotter of your intention to bid does not constitute a bid until the auctioneer recognizes that bid. Avoid the disappointment you'll feel if someone else buys the item on which you thought you were the high bidder. Be aggressive and make sure that the auctioneer sees you and knows that you are bidding.

3. If the auctioneer determines that an opening bid or any subsequent bid is not commensurate with the value of the item(s) offered, he may reject the same and withdraw the item(s) from sale, and if having acknowledged an opening bid, he decides that an advance thereafter is not of sufficient amount he may reject the advance. The auctioneer retains the right to add or delete any item. The auctioneer reserves the right to announce conditions of sale at any time. In the event of any dispute, the auctioneer will have sole and final discretion in these matters. The high bidder will be acknowledged by the auctioneer.

4. At the final call of the auctioneer, title to the item and/or service will pass to the highest bidder who, thereupon, assumes full risk and responsibility thereof.

SILENT AUCTION RULES

1. Each item in the silent auction has a bid sheet attached to it, or on a table nearby. Persons desiring to bid may do so by writing in their paddle number beside a corresponding bid on the bid sheet.

2. Each possible bid amount is pre-printed on the bid sheet. Bids may not be overwritten pre-printed bids, unless authorized by an auction official.

3. An auction official may disqualify the bid of a person blocking a bidder's table prior to the closing of a booth.

4. Only an auction official may nullify a bid.

5. Under no circumstances may a bid sheet be removed from the tables by anyone other than an auction official.

6. The silent auction tables will be open for bidding at 5:00 p.m. and will close at various intervals throughout the evening. Closing times are posted in the auction area. The closing bid circled by the auction official constitutes the winning bid.

7. In the event that two bidders are in the process of bidding on the same item when the auction official attempts to circle the winning bid, the official may conduct a mini live auction between those two bidders. He/she shall determine the winning bidder. In the event of a dispute, an auction official shall act as the final authority and shall determine the winning bidder. His/her decision shall be final.

The Life of Robert Land

Robert Land (1736 - 1818) was an adventurous, loyal frontiersman who served with the 79th Gordon Highlanders of the British Army. He fought with General Wolfe on the Plains of Abraham and saw action in the Battles of Louisbourg and Fort Detroit. In 1763, Robert and his wife Phoebe and their nine children settled in the

outlying village of Cushatunk. Here, the Land family had immediate contact with the local native peoples and, while hunting, found a wounded aboriginal and carried him home to be nursed to health. This kindness was to serve him well when he came to rely heavily on his native friends as a British Agent and spy during the American Revolution.

Robert Land remained loyal to the Crown when the American Revolution broke out. He was saved from a fiery death when a native companion warned him of danger only hours before the rebel militia razed his home with the intent of taking him and his family hostage. The Land family fled to New York. Robert Land continued in dangerous missions for the British, leading troops through unmapped, otherwise hostile native Indian territory to attack rebel strongholds.

At the end of the hostilities, Captain Robert Land crossed the Niagara River. It was here, after so many hardships, that the Land family settled under the British flag of Upper Canada and were the first settlers of what is now the City of Hamilton. Robert Land died in 1818 at the age of 82.

Lieutenant Colonel (Honourary) G. Scott Bowman, the founder and Headmaster of Robert Land Academy, is a direct descendant of Robert and Phoebe Land.

In its inaugural year (1978) the Academy enrolled 28 young men. Since then, Robert Land Academy has enrolled more than 4,000 Cadets. Its 168 acre campus includes a fully equipped gym, residences, classrooms, workshops, playing fields and more.

Robert Land's life as a frontiersman, soldier, father and magistrate personified the values of labour, loyalty, courage, commitment and honour. These values are the central pillars upon which the Academy exists. They have and will continue to be a part of our great heritage.
