But on the other hand, they have no recollection of living in a safer world, the one before September 11 th , Al Qaeda and ISIS. It is an eerie flashback to the days of the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. In those dark days, mainly after Kristallnacht, ships of European Jewish refugees tried to escape the Nazis—only to be denied access to safe shores around the world. They were forced to go back to the death camps in Europe. The story of the S.S. St. Louis in 1939 is only one of many. The ships captain, Gustav Schröder, planned to save the lives of more than 900 Jewish refugees from Germany: by taking them first to Cuba with the hope of ultimately getting to America. After they were denied entry to Cuba, America not only refused their entry but even fired a warning shot to keep them away from Florida's shores. After a failed attempt of clergy and academics in Canada to persuade the authorities to provide sanctuary to the ship's passengers, the St. Louis had to cross the Atlantic again on its way back to Europe. When I look at the pictures of the dehydrated and starving Myanmar refugees on dilapidated boats—all begging Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia to take them in, but instead being pushed back to sea—I know that we, the post- Holocaust generation, failed miserably. Yet as I was looking at the idealistic and bright young men and women of our Confirmation Class I felt somewhat better. I realized that our failure to keep those promises will not discourage them. On the contrary, it will motivate them to work harder so they can turn the world into a better place for the next generation. BShalom, Rabbi Alon Levkovitz

On May 15th we followed a 200-year-old tradition as we had an extraordinarily meaningful and joyous Confirmation Service, led by thirteen 10th graders from our congregation. These talented, creative and devoted teens led us in traditional and contemporary prayers, and also spoke about the meaning they find in being Jewish. While it didn’t come as a surprise, I was nonetheless tremendously proud and moved by their eloquence and the depth of their ideas and thoughts. Earlier that week when I considered my message to them I was wondering if the world that they live in is better than ours, their parents, when we were their age. On one hand they have all the knowledge and entertainment at the tips of their fingers, and they

The scariest thing is that the same atrocities, followed by indifference, are happening right now. Take for example the plight of Myanmar's Rohingya “boat people” in Southeast Asia. It is an eerie flashback to the days of the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. FROM THE PRESIDENT

Mark Slifkin

WOW, it is summer already. You would think that this is the time of year for your TBA staff to relax. Actually just the opposite happens since this is a very busy time: getting ready for the new HaMakom Religious School curriculum; your Voluntary Financial Commitment forms will be mailed around June 10; the Summer Pool Party on July 12th, preparations for the High Holy Days is extensive; and then maybe some vacation time. So I tip my hat to our great staff both existing and new. See Melanie’s article in this Scribe.

NEED YOUR HELP: We urgently need volunteers to work on and lead our Caring Community effor ts. This is a critical service we provide to our members. Please send me an email or call if you can help.

NEED YOUR HELP: We are looking for help on the Chidush Project during design and implementation. We need a Mechanical Engineer and someone familiar with project management software and tracking of the schedule and costs. We really want to use members with these skills and avoid hir ing an outside firm to help manage this project. Please give me a call!

TICKETS ARE NOW AVAILABLE – GOING FAST: The show - our own Cantor Jessica and the Joe Scott Trio performing at the Maltz titled “Jewish Life In Music” on JANUARY 2, 2016, 8:00pm. I know it is a long way off but please purchase your tickets through the Temple early so we can properly plan this special event (your check is your reservation-see details elsewhere in the Scribe). We have reserved the Green Room, so look for additional announcements in the near future.

Congratulations: To Alissa Frankel on her promotion to Education Director of our Religious School. If you were not at Temple on Sunday May 17th to hear all about the new and exciting HaMakom (“The Place”) curriculum or the ability to sign up on line during the summer, please call the office.

Welcome: – Danna Cohen has joined Alissa Frankel’s staff as the Jewish Life Activities Director. She will be working on activities for ALL ages from Kindergarten through our nonagenarians. So look for Danna at all those activities in our upcoming calendar.

UPDATE ON OUR SKIING STAR: Lacie Greenwald won the 12-13 age group NASTAR event out of 128 competitors. This is the 3rd year in a row on the NASTAR podium. Gee and no snow in Florida – how does she do it?

HIGH HOLY DAY RECOGNITION: Dur ing last years’ High Holy Days we recognized 43 families who generously gave, in the spirit of Kulanu, and met the requirements for one of these categories; Chazonim-Visionaries ($18,000 or more), Circle of Tzadik ($10,000-$17,999), L’Dor V’Dor ($5,400-$9,999), or Tikkun Olam ($3,600-$5,399). There is still time, before June 30, 2015, to meet the requirements. If you are close to one of these categories you will be receiving a call, or if you want to know where you are just call Melanie Goldsobel.

CONGRATULATIONS: Melanie Goldsobel, our Director of Administration, has done it – we thank you. At the Religious School open house May 17 we have introduced Chaverweb – our online registration, bill payment and sign up system. We are star ting with HaMakom (what is that you ask – see Alissa Frankel’s ar ticle). You will be able to register on line for Religious School. Soon you will be able to pay your yearly membership Voluntary Financial Commitment, fees, registering for events etc., all on line behind a very secure system.

SUPPORT TBA WITH AMAZON PURCHASES: Thanks to Melanie Goldsobel & Carol Sleeper, here is an easy way to do your shopping AND have Amazon make a contribution to TBA. All of us buy from Amazon – right? Just go to www.templebetham.com, click on the link & and do your ordering as you normally would. Select ‘Reform Temple of Jupiter-Tequesta’ (that is our actual incorporated name) as your favorite charitable organization. All items marked ‘Eligible for AmazonSmile Donation’ will automatically result in Amazon sending a check to TBA for 0.5% of your purchases.

That will make us all SMILE! Nothing else for you to do except make TBA your favorite charity and keep using that link.

Our Board member names are always listed in the Scribe – talk to them anytime about your thoughts, suggestions and ideas – our tag line ALL OF US TOGETHER only works if we have YOUR input!

Scribe articles are great and contain interesting tidbits about TBA – enjoy them. Call me at 561-222-8350 if you have ANY questions or just wish to chat. Email works also: [email protected].

MAZEL TOV TO OUR GRADUATES

Carol Sleeper, Director of Membership, Engagement & Programming

Congratulations to all of Temple Beth Am’s high school graduating seniors. We’ve helped you celebrate many simchas over the years and wanted to wish you Mazel Tov on this milestone! Some of the graduates will be staying in Florida for school and some will be going out of state. Some will be going to college on football, music or academic scholarships and some will be joining siblings at various universities. Their majors are varied and include Nursing, Pre-Med, Computer Science, Business/Economics, Physics, Political Science, Hospitality, Culinary Arts, Communications, Environmental Science and Microbiology. They are a diverse group with many interests but the commonality that they share is that they are part of our Temple Beth Am community. Below is a list of where “our kids” are heading.

Josh Ackerman University of Central Florida Isabel Amsden Florida Gulf Coast University Allison Bell University of Central Florida Danielle Borenstein University of Central Florida Hannah Denenberg University of Michigan Josh Drourr University of Florida Seth Freeman Jacksonville University Jonah Galewitz Florida State University Jared Greenberg University of Florida Ben Greenspan Columbia University Brittany Grogins University of Florida Brandon Hass Vanderbilt University Jamie Honowitz University of Florida Calvin Kaler Cornell University Erin Kaufmann University of Wisconsin Haley Lichterman University of Alabama Jake Locke University of Florida Jordan Reich going to college up North Shelby Rubin University of Florida Alec Schafler University of Florida Matt Vogel University of Central Florida Jared White University of West Florida Seth White PBSC/University of Central Florida

If your child graduated this year and is not on the list I’m sorry we missed you. If you want to send me their information I’ll share it with the congregation in a future article. And don’t forget once your college students find out their address at school let us know so we can give it to Alissa and her HaMakom staff so that they can send them “college care packages”. And a quick shout out to our recent college graduates, Teddy Dwork, Talia Brody-Barre & Samantha Stein. On a personal note congratulations also to my niece Emma who is graduating from MIT in a few weeks. Very appropriate at this time is a quote from one of my favorite authors, Dr. Seuss:

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide

where to go...” ― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places You'll Go!

SISTERHOOD SCOOP

Lois Remick

In April, the snowbirds leave, and in summer, the residents leave. We, the residents, leave our Paradise to visit relatives and friends in New York, Boston, Chicago and other points north. What has always struck me funny is that it is usually hotter and more humid up north during the summer! Just an observation on the peculiarity of our human condition: we will suffer hotter temperatures just to see our family and then come back to Paradise and tell everyone how terrible the weather was! Well, Sisterhood has wonderful events planned for us in our little Paradise this summer. On July 9, at 1:00pm at the Temple, we will have some laughs and some fun at our Membership Meeting! We have a special guest coming who will be applying temporary henna designs to us. If you attended the movie Sisterhood showed in March, Arranged, you will remember Nasira applied henna to Rochel's hands. And, in The Book Club, we read Henna House, and we were tantalized by the intricate designs described in the novel. So, come join us for a henna experience and enjoy some Indian and Middle-Eastern snacks too. Speaking of events, we have scheduled a Theater Party outing, co-sponsored with Men's Club, on Wednesday, July 15. We'll be going to Palm Beach DramaWorks in West Palm, for a 2:00pm matinee performance of A Little Night Music. The cost is $40 per person but we have only 25 tickets available. Tickets will go to the first 25 people who send in their reservation accompanied by their payment in full. Please remember to give Shelley Kissil a call if you want to be part of the Savta’s Storytime this summer . Par ticipants will read to preschool classes at the Temple's One School on the first and third Tuesday of the month, beginning June 16, from 9:30am – 10:30am. You can contact Shelley at [email protected] or phone her at 406-3667 for more information and to sign up. For those Sisterhood members who attended our meeting on May 7, we thank you for joining us, and hope you enjoyed learning about the upcoming year’s events and socializing with your TBA sisters. We also thank Taylor – the owner of Direct Floral and the person responsible for our beautiful Bima flowers – for being our special guest speaker. Taylor taught us how to create a gorgeous yellow rose floral arrangement and shared some pointers for selecting the freshest cut flowers and how to make them last longer. Sisterhood thanks our members and their spouses for helping with Family Promise’s hosting from May 10 to May 17. We appreciate our member’s generosity of spirit and time. We want to welcome our two new Board members, Sharon Rosen and Cathy Yonkers, who officially assume duties on July 1. It is our pleasure to have them join us for what promises to be an outstanding year of events and activities. Soon, you will be receiving a letter inviting you to join Sisterhood for the 2015-2016 season, which begins on July 1. Please complete your form and return it to TBA along with your Sisterhood annual dues check, and join your TBA sisters for a year of fun, laughter, and getting things done! Kulanu! We wish everybody a safe and happy summer and go someplace that is “chilly”!

We want to remind all Temple members that they may purchase Flowers for the Bimah by calling Judy Goldstein at 747-3888.

All your simchas, not just B’nei Mitzvah, can be celebrated (baby naming, anniversary,

retirement, big-birthday, etc.) by decorating our Bimah with beautiful flowers.

This is one more way you are able to support the programs of our Temple. Kulanu!

MEN’S CLUB SCRIBBLES

Jack Tenenbaum, President

The April 24th Yom Haatzmaut Friday Night Service went extremely well. We successfully fed over 250 people. Thanks to John Marzina, Eric Weiner, Mel Wolfe, Dan Liss, Howard Freedland and Ralph Van Baalen for cooking and serving, Bruce Cohen for helping with the preparation, and David Elias for schlepping everything back and forth. Mark Slifkin and Barry Goldstein pitched in as well, as did several other members of the Men's Club for clean up. If I missed mentioning you and your work at the event, my apologies. All in all, a very successful event.

The next event will be the Congregational meeting on May 31, for which the Men's Club will provide a lox and bagel breakfast.

To date, over $3,000 has been collected to honor Jerry Holinstat's memory by dedicating an appropriate part of the re-modeled Temple. If you have not yet made a contribution, please send it to the Men's Club c/o the Temple and mark it for the Jerry Holinstat fund.

There will be an informal Men's Club/Sisterhood jointly sponsored Dining Out on Saturday, June 13th and July 18th at 6:00pm. Watch our weekly e-newsletter and your emails for details. Other informal dining out events are scheduled throughout the year.

The Men's Club has made arrangements for a trip to see the Miami Dolphins play the Houston Texans on October 25, 2015 at 1:00pm. There will be a char ter bus and a block of tickets. The cost for transpor tation and admission is only $50. We can only accept 50 reservations, so reserve your place quickly. We anticipate a very quick sell-out. See the reservation form in this Scribe.

We are well on our way to finalizing the schedule of events for next year which promises to be more active to serve the congregation and the community. There will be fishing charters, Marlins and Dolphins games, dining outs, theater, and more events co-sponsored with the Sisterhood, etc. We are also exploring Mitzvah Days for middle and high school students.

Comments and suggestions are always welcome.

YOUTH GROUP

Laura Williams, Director

Shalom! My name is Laura Williams and I am the new Youth Director at Temple Beth Am! I am so excited to join the TBA family as I move from my home state of Michigan. I just graduated this May from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science and a minor in Jewish Studies. There I worked as an intern for Destination Detroit, where MSU students connected with elementary schools in the city to build a bridge between our communities. I also worked as a religious school teacher in Lansing, Michigan for fifth grade students. This summer I will return to Tamarack Camps in Michigan for my sixth year on the staff team. I will be a supervisor for our co-ed village of campers entering eighth grade, where I started as a camper myself. In high school, I was president of my youth group and I am so excited to be part of Temple Beth Am’s JAMTY/JAMTY Jr./Cochavim, and our NFTY-STR region! I cannot wait for the school year to start and to see what all our youth groups accomplish together! Please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I am looking forward to meeting you and your families come August! L’Shalom, Laura Williams

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

Alissa Frankel, Education Director

HaMakom at Temple Beth Am Learn Jewish. Live Jewish.

The next time you come to Temple Beth Am, you may see some changes to our youth and education department. We have named our youth education department HaMakom. HaMakom is Hebrew for “The Place” and at Temple Beth Am it refers to our blend of formal and informal education for Kindergarten – 12th grade. Here are some of the exciting changes that come along with our new lingo. Online registration through Chaverweb Religious School & Shalom Chai tuition includes Youth Group membership dues for 3rd -12th graders Some new faces! Laura Williams, Youth Director and Danna Cohen, Jewish Life Activities Director will be

joining our HaMakom team

So over the summer, please keep an eye out for more information on registration for Religious School and our Taste of Religious School on Sunday, August 23rd. L’Shalom, Alissa Frankel

EDUCATION DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE AT THE OPEN HOUSE

Alissa Frankel, Education Director

The wilderness lends itself for the potential of personal growth. It’s a place of nature and a retreat from the world. In the Torah portion, B’midbar (bah-med-bar), we read about the wilderness where our ancestors encountered God and where the Torah and their stories were revealed. As summer approaches and we get ready to spend time outdoors at camp and on vacation, think of this time like a continuation of school. This time allows you the opportunity to learn and to mature. Nature especially is a unique environment that teaches respect, kindness, and connectedness among one another. It was in the wilderness of Sinai that our people learned the value of collective responsibility to one another in the community. This lesson teaches us the importance of experience to reinforce education. Similar to this environment, HaMakom, Hebrew for “The Place”, creates a continuum of learning from Kindergarten through 12th grade by moving education beyond the classroom into the family space and community, giving the learning back to the students and their families. HaMakom is a place designed for everyone to feel comfortable to learn Jewish and live Jewish. Building on our school’s success, we have enhanced our curriculum to include weekly specials such as art, cooking, dance, sports, multimedia, and drama. These specials have been designed to connect the classroom to a camp-like atmosphere and offer a fun and exploratory learning environment. In addition, we will no longer be just utilizing the classroom to teach our students. We invite parents to join their children for a monthly Family Shabbat Experience that will allow our parents and students to learn together and enjoy a family-friendly Service. Also, grade-based celebrations throughout the year will develop a connection among our students that can’t be replicated anywhere else. Hebrew learning will begin earlier in Kindergarten and we will continue with our one-on-one Skype Hebrew tutoring, beginning in fourth grade, which allows us to strengthen students Hebrew decoding skills and teach to their current level and ability. Expanding this to our Shalom Chai students, we have changed the schedule to “block scheduling” to allow our busiest teens to put their learning in their own hands. Core classes and elective nights will meet every other Tuesday. The evening begins with dinner, followed by a new curriculum for core nights and elective nights that are both engaging and enriching. HaMakom is a blend of formal and informal education, lowering the barriers to participation. Tuition now includes youth group membership dues for our three thriving youth groups. This allows all of our students the opportunity to experience the unique programs offered throughout HaMakom at Temple Beth Am. B’midbar reflects on the uncertain and adventurous journey of the generations before us. Just like today, life happens. We try new things, we grow, and we are always learning something new. And in our search to make meaning out of our experiences, we use our words to tell a story. It becomes more important than the event itself. The event is locked into a moment in time, but the story can be retold endlessly. By being part of HaMakom at Temple Beth Am, you can tell your stories, foster connections among your peers, and build lasting relationships, and in doing so learn a great deal about what’s important to you. I hope you enjoy your summer and I look forward to having you join us on our upcoming journey at HaMakom at Temple Beth Am.

MEMORIAL BOARDS

CEMETERY PLOTS

How can you honor your deceased loved one?

By placing your loved one’s name on the Memorial Board in the Sanctuary.

When you do this, a light on their plaque will be lit on their Yahrzeit (anniversary of their death) and

their name will be read from the Bimah.

Their light will also be lit on Yom Kippur and their name will always be included in the Yizkor Book

during the High Holy Days.

Even when you are gone, your loved one will not be forgotten. Plaques are $500.

Call the Temple at 747-1109 to place your order.

Did you know that as a benefit of Temple membership, you can purchase cemetery plots for

yourself and your family at a significantly discounted price?

Temple Beth Am has reserved a limited number of cemetery plots in the Garden of Abraham section

at the Star of David Cemetery and Funeral Chapel of the Palm Beaches (formerly known as Menorah

Gardens).

The price of a plot purchased from Temple Beth Am is $1,500. If you went directly to the Star of

David, the price to purchase a plot is $2,995. Please note that this price is for a plot only. You will need to see a funeral director for information
