Volume 17, Issue 1
Dear Settles Bridge Families,
Welcome back to another wonderful school year at Settles Bridge Elementary. This will be my ninth and final year at Settles Bridge and I am looking forward to making SBE the best school possible before I depart. I am so lucky to have the help of an amazingly talented Executive Board that includes Meghna Singh, Annie Singh, Meg Barnard, Rebecca Hall, Tracy Kelley, Chenin Kemmerlin, Kate Sharer and Andrea Schulke. Together, and with the help of so many dedicated parents, administrators and teachers, we will improve the educational opportunities and environment of our school for all of our children. We also plan to make sure you all have a lot of fun in the process!
The SBE PTA does one major fundraising drive at the beginning of each school year. It is our Support Our Stars campaign and it simply asks that you join PTA and give a donation in the amount in which you feel comfortable. We will not be having other fundraisers throughout the year, so if you have not yet joined PTA, but want to help us have a successful year, please join and send in a check with your student. Your donations will allow us to continue funding essential software programs like IXL and Raz kids, providing teacher grants, funding our new ini-tiative, Project Recharge, and many other programs that im-prove the education of our students every day.
While we will not have another fundraising campaign, we will be having a lot of fun events throughout the year such as our monthly Spirit Nights at area restaurants, movie night at SBE, mother-son night at Get Air Johns Creek, our annual Father-daughter dance and of course the famous SBE Spring Fling. We hope that you will join us throughout the year at these enter-taining events. The SBE PTA has made some amazing im-provements to SBE over the years such as building the Science Lab and completely renovating the media center and we will continue to be good stewards of your generous donations by improving the academic environment of our school.

Box Tops for Education Contest 1st Collection Deadline is October 15th
If you throw away unclipped Box Tops, you are throwing away money for our school! An easy way to help support our school is through the Box Tops for Education Program. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents. The money is given to our school to buy items to
support our teachers and students at SBE. Simply clip the Box Tops emblem from participating products packaging and send them in on a collection sheet (download a collection sheet here) or in a baggie labeled with your child’s name, grade and teacher
by Thursday, October 15th to be eligible for our 1st contest of the school year. The two students that submit the most box tops will earn a prize and the two top classrooms will each a class party. Box Tops can be found on product labels on foods and goods you probably already have in your home. Some more popular brands include: Betty Crocker, General Mills, Pillsbury, GoGurt, Ziploc,
Kleenex, Scotts and Hanes. You can find more information about the program on the Box Tops for Education Website (www.boxtops4education.com).
Help us meet this year’s goal of $3000. We can do it! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact either Teresa at
[email protected] or Rebecca at [email protected].
Project Recharge
Recharging the Body to Fuel the Mind
This year, SBE PTA turns its focus outside. With Project Recharge, the PTA is looking to raise funding to improve the outside recess areas around SBE. We are so excited that we can make this improvement for our children’s
learning environment.
CHILDREN NEED RECESS
As we know, learning isn’t done entirely in the classroom. According to the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, “recess is a crucial and necessary component of a child’s devel-opment.” An article from January 2013, The Crucial Role of Recess in School, concludes that re-cess makes children more attentive and more productive in the classroom. Periodic active play breaks during the academic day optimizes children and young adolescents’ cognitive processing abilities significantly. In light of this research, the PTA, in conjunction with the SBE administra-tion, are working to update and improve our outdoor recess areas. We are looking to update our playground structures, address the ongoing issue around our grass areas and ensure each grade has a specific and safe area to get outside, get some fresh air and recharge themselves for better and improved learning in the classroom.

would like to thank all of the SBE

Help Wanted
Volunteers Needed
We love our volunteers and could not accomplish what we do around the halls of Settles Bridge without the dedication and devotion of so many parents. We know your time is ex-tremely precious and understand free time in today’s world is fleeting. That is why vol-unteering at your child’s school serves double duty – you can help to enrich the environment where your kids learn while being present at the school to see them and maybe even catch that sweet smile. If you have even as little as 30 minutes, we would love to have you help.
We have all kinds of jobs from big to small – but none are any less important than the other.
Please consider helping us this school year… we promise it will be worth your while!

Hey Stars, what do you think about your first month of school?
It has been a month since our children have been in school. That amounts to
22 days
144 hours
1 half day
10 P.E. classes
3 rounds of Specials Classes
So we thought, what do the kids think of school so far? Here’s what they had to say
Dylan, of Mrs. Brown’s 5th Grade says his favorite thing so far is… “that Mrs. Brown has been really nice!”
Tommy, of Mr. Strang’s 2nd Grade reports that his “… favorite thing
about school so far is reading.”
Lyndsay and Lizzy of Mr. Pennington’s 5th Grade
Lyndsay likes math because Mr. Pennington teaches in a fun way.
Lizzy likes “social studies the most because we got to learn about the Civil War and it was really interesting.”
“My most favorite thing so far has been making new friends,” reports Srikar of Mrs. Helland’s 4th Grade.

Does your child have a big imagination? Do they like to paint? draw? dance? Are they crea-tive? Do they have an eye for photography? Are they musically inclined? If the answer is
yes, then we have a PTA arts contest to spotlight these talents. Reflections is a PTA spon-sored arts recognition program. Students in ALL grades (including kindergarten) may par-ticipate. This year’s theme is “Let Your Imagination Fly” and students are encouraged to
come up with creative ways to interpret this through the arts. Students may submit one or more works of art in these six areas: Dance Choreography, Film/Video Production, Musical Composition, Literature, Photography, and Visual Arts. (Note: In the Visual Arts category, we are now accepting 3-D entries, including sculpture, models, etc. Please see the Rules for
more details)
Reflections entries must be dropped off on Thursday, September 24 from 7:00 AM - 10:00 AM in the SBE Cafeteria. Parents are responsible for submitting their student's entry. We will not accept late entries after September 24th. All entries need to have a Student En-
try form completed and submitted with their artwork. Please go to Settles Bridge PTA website at www.sbepta.net for more information and to download the following important
forms: Reflections General Rules, Student Entry Form, and Category Descriptions & Rules.
If you have questions, contact Valerie Anders at [email protected] or Rebecca Hall at [email protected].

Dinner plans made easy! What I love most about Spirit Nights is that there is one less dinner to plan out during the school week. Go ahead and mark it on your calendar and plan to have dinner with us at Zaxby’s on Thursday, September 17th. A portion of the night’s proceeds will come back directly to Set-tles Bridge. Supporting Our Local Businesses The SBE PTA wants to extend its gratitude to all our local businesses that have already part-nered in some way with Settles Bridge. Without our Partners In Education (PIE), many of the much-needed improvements over the years, such as the recently completed enhancements to our Media Center, would not have been possible. We are so grateful for our Partner’s support as they help to enrich our students’ educational experience. Let’s all work together to support
our local business community.
Are You a Local Business Owner?
If you have a local business, or work for a company who is interested in supporting our school, please email or call me to get your business partnered up with SBE and our Stars.
