What????What is the savanna? The savanna is a Grassland covered with

shrubs and trees. The savanna grass can grow up to 1-2 meters high (which is a lot)

The rain collects into water holes which is vital to the animals that live there.

In the winter it is very dry and the trees are very flammable so sometimes there can be wild fires.

around the equator. This plant can grow up to 25 meters tall it can live for thousand years.

. It looks like it was planted upside down and is leafless for 9 months. Water gets stored in it thick, corky, fire resistant trunk.

. The bark is used for cloth, rapes and the leaves are used for condiments, medicine and fruit.

The umbrella thorn acacia is a plant that grows in the sand dunes or rocky grounds. This plant needs little water and can survive on only 4cm of rain

It can withstand day temperatures of 122 degrees and below freezing at night. The branches are shaped kind of like a crown or umbrella.

This plant, Kangaroo Paws, only grows in the Australian savanna.

It has green furry leaves that grow to 10cm. The stem is red and can grow to be a meter long. Birds love to perch on this plant. Honey eaters and Wattle birds pollinate it.

Human Activities

Tourism is very important income to the people of Africa but could it be doing more harm than good?

Poachers are cutting the rhino and elephant populations in half during their greedy search for tusks and horns.

The animals horns and tusks are made from a expensive, natural material called ivory.

Page 13: The savanna

TourismTourism is some countries main income. Some of the sites are for paleontology.Tourists don’t have as much respect for the land

they are staying on. Indigenous people have been greatly changed by

tourists. With all the vehicles that tourists use grass is

worn done which means animals sometimes starve.

PoachingElephants and rhinos have been killed mercilessly

for their tusks and horns. When they are killed the body is just left with the

ivory cut off.Poaching is illegal with serious consequences.Because of poaching some species such as the

black rhino are very close to extinction.
