AS cultural icons go, li-braries have had ittough. When they’renot being razed, likethe great library in
Alexandria, Egypt, or sacked, like the ancient one in Baghdadby the Mongols, they’re beset byprudish people who’d pick theshelves clean of whatever offendsthem this week. Pity the poorchildren in whose name thesebattles are often waged.
Ursula K. Le Guin aimsstraight for the gut of this lattergroup — particularly the sort ofbookish teen apt to read fanta-sies — by setting her latest youngadult novel, “Voices,” in a ruinedhousehold with a secret library, one that the city’s oafish con-querors are frantic to find anddestroy.
Barbarians-versus-brainiacsmay be well-trod turf, but LeGuin sure-footedly makes it new.She creates a protagonist withobvious appeal to her intendedaudience: a geeky girl with badhair but a quick intelligence, whonurses a seething contempt forthe illiterate thugs who runeverything.
Memer is an orphan, theproduct of a rape 17 years earlier, when religious zealots sweptthrough democratic, cosmopoli-tan Ansul, destroying librariesand universities and killing intel-
lectuals and teachers. At thestory’s start, she has inheritedher late mother’s role as house-keeper to the largest and mostcherished of Ansul’s old manors,Galvamand, and its Waylord, aman as wrecked and forlorn ashis ransacked property.
He educates Memer in a mys-terious chamber that hides theremnants of their culture and, quite possibly, a long-dormantoracle. Whether the oracle worksor not, whether it defies logic orcan be explained away is one ofthe book’s more satisfying enig-mas.
These fabulist touches weaveseamlessly into Memer’s mun-dane doings, as if every librarywere magical if only you knewwhere to look. And it’s refreshingto see what is often called“women’s work” given its due:“Galvamand would not scant itsguests or shame its ancestors if[the cook] could help it. This ispart of what I meant abouthousework. If it isn’t important, what is? If it isn’t done honor-ably, where is honor?”
There’s beauty in the dailyrhythms of life and also defiance,as if the attempt to go on is thebest revenge. The manor’s hospi-tality becomes the stage for a re-newal of a vanquished people, prodded out of silence by unex-pected guests.
“Voices” is a companion to“Gifts,” rather than a sequel, andit is the protagonist of the earlierbook who drops in and turnsMemer’s world on its head.
In “Gifts,” an Uplandernamed Orrec had trouble mas-tering the family talent of un-making things; Gry, who is nowhis wife, has a knack with ani-mals that proves pivotal in“Voices.” Orrec’s new role, now
that he’s fully grown is that of acelebrated maker (in an unmis-takable play on the word).
Orrec’s craft isn’t so muchmagical as magisterial: He’s abeloved “maker” of verse and acharismatic storyteller. (Imag-ine a world in which a scholarlywordsmith has the draw of a rockstar.)
Le Guin takes shortcuts, however, and settles for describ-ing his recitations rather thancreating verses for us to share, but this may be deliberate:
“Orrec finished tuning hislyre, explaining as he did so thatthe poem was not sung, but thatthe voice of the instrumentserved to set the poetry apartfrom all the words said beforeand after it, and also say, some-times, what no words could.”
The reader is left to imaginewhat lyrics might be powerfulenough to heat up the city’s sim-mering resentments. None-theless, these legends and songsthat refuse to stay buried takeon, as banned words often do,multiple layers of meaning.
Die-hard sword-and-sorceryfans might balk at the book’spen-is-mightier-than-you-know-what resolution, but there’s nolack of energy in Le Guin’s tightlydrawn scenes of confrontationand rebellion spurred by Orrec’srecitations.
But for all the heroine’sschooling, Memer has a lot tolearn, namely that the power ofthose squiggles and lines on thepage relies not only on howthey’re wielded but also on whatthe audience — including herself— chooses to see and hear.
