Enterprise Asset Management has many different flavors depending on the industry, the type of asset being maintained, the regulatory regime and the consequences of asset failure. These industry variations are expressed in terms of different perceptions of the role of maintenance within a specific organization:

MRO, Plant Maintenance, M&E – the name and definition of maintenance varies by industry – fundamentally all industries face the same objective when it comes to Enterprise Asset Management, namely Ensuring Safe, Reliable & Available Asset Operations.This objective must be achieved within an environment in which assets are getting increasingly complex, where asset lives are being continually extended, where ever stricter regulatory compliance regimes are being introduced and where there is an unrelenting focus on minimizing maintenance costs.

THE CHALLENGE

These pressures are changing the way that maintenance is planned and performed, what was once hard time and life limited has now become on-condition and condition monitored. Predictive and preventive maintenance previously driven by post performance reliability and statistical trend data is now driven by real time diagnostics and prognostics – what is now commonly called health monitoring.

It is no longer acceptable for organizations to hold highly capital intensive safety stocks of spares. Lean strategies like Just-in-time, Kanban, Performance based Logistics (PBL), Power by the Hour (PBH), Pooling, and Total Care packages are among the many options now available to asset operators.

In many industries, companies have become focused on their core business and are employing several outsourced methods to run the business. Those who do not have capability for maintenance are buying quality services in the market. Those who have capability are selling such services. Maintenance services providers are being squeezed as OEM’s increasingly offer total care packages, e.g. where the sale of new aircraft is bundled with maintenance and spares support.

Maintenance decisions are now driven by the business model. Maintenance facilities are moving from cost centers to profit centers. Excess and spare capacities are now considered revenue opportunities. Technical capability and facilities are now negotiable assets. Productivity, turnaround time and supply chain effectiveness are now recognized as major sources of competitive advantages.

While Maintenance Operations have changed dramatically over recent years, the systems that they rely on have not evolved to the same extent. Maintenance Management Software is often limited to a single industry and inconceivably many of the most popular packages do not support the integration of maintenance planning, execution and supply chain functions and processes.

Managing the MRO function as a business requires effective planning and control of People (skilled labor), Facilities, and Materials – the management of these resources are central tenets of an ERP

IMRO = OPTIMIZED SAP EAM

iMRO is built using the SAP NetWeaver® technology platform to SAP’s internal development standards, certified by SAP to the same standards used for SAP’s own solutions and supported via the same OSS processes used to manage standard SAP software.

iMRO leverages the latest technologies available within the NetWeaver® stack to deliver intuitive streamlined user interfaces, accessibility and back-end ERP integration. As of 2012, iMRO is fully mobile enabled both as a lean mobile application and on Sybase SUP for organizations with greater data synchronization requirements. iMRO uses SAP’s Enterprise Services Repository to the fullest extent possible. This means that iMRO requires no additional hardware or software to install, maintain, upgrade etc. iMRO runs natively on the SAP server as an integral part of the SAP EAM solution.

As a result, users of SAP ERP are able to seamlessly navigate between SAP ERP and iMRO transactions without logging onto a separate application, or getting confused by a different information model. iMRO re-uses SAP ERP user masters, authorizations, menus, navigation, data dictionary and database processes.
