With intelligent students, talented teachers, dedicated stamembers and devoted parents, our school continues to represent the best in high school education. As many of you know, Santa Rosa High School is the most popular school to attend, with students choosing to come here from several nearby counties. This year our California State Testing program will include: a STAR Science assessment for all 10th graders, an optional Early Assessment Program (EAP) in English and Math for 11th graders and the new Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC) for all 11th graders. The testing window for STAR and EAP will be April 7th-29th and the window for SBAC will be April 7th- May 16th. For the STAR Science assessment we will have all 10th grade students test on one day within the window in April. These test results will potentially be used by the Federal Government to calculate our Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). It is important that all students are present for the Science testing and have a healthy breakfast on the day of testing. For the Early Assessment Program in English and Math, all 11th graders are given the option to take the assessment during the April window. We will be oering the English and Math on consecutive days and will have students sign up in their English and Math classes. This test will be given in the MPR with Ms. Baldenegro. The new Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC) will also be given to 11th graders. This year is the first year that this assessment will be given and because it is an electronic test we will have several days within the window that testing will be given. The test will be a combination of English and Math and should be completed within a 3 hour time frame. Unfortunately, because this is the first year, the state will not be providing any results to the site or to parents regarding students’ performance. Dear Parents and Guardians,

Santa Rosa High School is proud to be an academic, successful school. With intelligent students, talented teachers, dedicated staff members and devoted parents, our school continues to represent the best in high school education.

We will be offering the English and Math on consecutive days and will have students sign up in their English and Math classes.

History Department Helps Redwood Food BankDave Franzman, Terry Swehla and Art Horner, history teachers at SRHS, put jars on their desks back in November and asked students to donate their spare change for the food bank. They collected a whopping $1450, all for no prizes, no extra credit, just because it was the kind thing to do. After rolling the change and taking it to the bank, about 30 students got up early on their first day of vacation and went to G&G Market to buy the food. While shopping, an anonymous person asked what all these teenagers were doing in the store. When we explained, he opened his wallet and pulled out a new $100 bill to add to our supply. He identified himself only as "an alumnus." The kids (and their teachers) were thrilled. They talked about it all the way to the new Redwood Empire Food Bank headquarters off Airport Blvd.

The kids learned a great lesson about what a caring community we live in.

Graduation PolicyThere is a board policy (BP 6146.1) which affects all grade levels. Students may not be promoted to the next grade level if they do not meet the required criteria for each grade level. The policy is posted on the SRHS website (www.santarosahighschool.net) under the counseling section for your review in both English and Spanish.

Tips for Test Taking SuccessTaking tests can be a traumatic experience for some students. Here are some skills to help your child feel more confident for tests:• “Cramming” the night before a test is not productive. Instead, get a good night’s sleep.• Be sure to thoroughly and carefully read the test directions before beginning to mark your answers.• Skip over questions which you do not know the answers to and return to them if there is time.• Bring an extra pencil just in case.• Before beginning your test…take a deep breath, relax and dive in.

It is hard to believe, but it’s already that time of the year when we start talking about elections for next year's STP Board. Carolyn Withers, (mom of Sarah), Deirdre Frontczak, (mom of Clare Sitzer) and I, (mom of Henry) will be graduating with our kids, so there will be at least three open seats. Seize this opportunity to make your move, be part of a team who can and does make a difference in the school. Your participation makes it better for every student, teacher and parent. If you are interested in becoming a Board member, or you know someone who might be, please contact me or, better yet, join us at an STP meeting to see what goes on. Our meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the staff lounge.

March 30, 2014 is the date for the 140th Anniversary Open House celebration, and it is going to be magnificent. Plans are firming up for the event, which will be open to the public from 1-4 p.m. at the high school. We are looking for alumni, so please spread the word. It will be a school-wide event and the STP will be trying to raise money for our 140 years, $140 for 140 desks fundraiser. Maybe you know someone who attended SRHS long ago and will want to hear about this; please spread the word. If you have been in the school recently, you probably noticed the great new floor mats that were purchased by STP through your generous contributions. They are wonderful and a real improvement to the school.

There are still plenty of opportunities to get involved at school. Volunteer to chaperone a dance. Project Grad and prom would love to have you on board. Bake something for a staff appreciation. Just jump in and make it fun. These events cannot happen without your support, they only take a couple of hours and the enjoyment lasts a lifetime.

I hope to see you at the next STP meeting, February 4th at 7:30 p.m. in the staff lounge.

January Brings 400+ Students to AQ 4th Annual AQ Arts College DayOver 400 AQ and SRHS Fine Arts Pathway students attended the 4th Annual AQ Arts College Day on January 16th at the Finley Community Center in Santa Rosa. The event christened the upstairs part of the new Person Wing at the center and the venue turned out to be a beautiful location for the day, with spacious and attractive facilities. After the AQ & SRHS students returned to campus, the Arena/Fair part of the event was open to students, teachers and counselors from other schools and the general community. Many students had visual arts portfolio reviews that day, and many received on-the-spot admission and/or scholarship recommendations. “This event gives students a look at the many arts-related majors and programs and at the breadth of arts-related college educations and eventual careers,” Nzinga Woods, chairperson of the AQ Arts College Day committee, said. She continued, “I think it empowers them to envision what is possible and how something they love can be linked to what they do later in life.” The colleges provided information about individual application requirements, financial aid opportunities, various majors and degrees and the unique culture and setting of each school. The event was sponsored by Friends of AQ, ArtQuest, SRHS Fine Arts Dept., SRHS School Site Council, Sonoma County Office of Education, Clone Digital Copy and Print and the LaMark family. Very special thanks to FofAQ volunteer coordinator, Christi Corradi and FofAQ President, Ellen Zalman-Rai, who helped greatly with all phases of the event, and also the many, many FofAQ volunteers. This event would not have happened without the incredible efforts of all these supporters! Twenty-five Visual, Performing and Liberal Arts colleges or departments participated, including the Academy of Art University, Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California College of the Arts, California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, Cornish College of the Arts, Dominican University, Ex’pression College of Digital Arts, Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Kansas City Art Institute, Laguna College of Arts & Design, Maryland Institute College of Art, Massachusetts College of Art & Design, Minneapolis College of Art & Design, Oregon College of Arts & Crafts, Pacific Northwest College of Art, Paris College of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, San Francisco Art Institute, Santa Fe University of Art & Design, Savannah College of Art & Design, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, University of the Arts-London and University of San Francisco.

Deadline Just Around the Corner for Fall 2014 AQ Application Although the AQ Priority Deadline has just passed, there’s sti# time to make the Deadline of February 21st for Fa# 2014 admission into AQ! Second Annual Mardi Gras Ball Live Auction Seeks Donations! Our very first Mardi Gras Ball and Auction had so many wonderful donations given it would be hard to beat, but we are hoping the second annual on February 22, 2014 will surpass that! Perhaps you have a beautiful home in a vacation destination that you can offer for a week, or access to an extraordinary event like a concert, theatre or ballet, or major sports event. Maybe it’s a spa package, a golf package, or a culinary event - -any intriguing experience that would bring excitement to our Live Auction and help raise funds for the ArtQuest program and its students would be so greatly appreciated. Donations from the last Ball funded many constructive projects and needs within the AQ community! To name a few: costumes for the dance department, computers for the digital department, seed money to all ArtQuest teachers, funds to build a website, funding for College Day (specifically geared to Arts and Liberal art colleges and conservatories) and 19 scholarships for students! If you would like to contribute to this significant endeavor, please contact Friends of AQ auction chair, Connie Sultana at [email protected] or 588-8026 with your special donation. Project Graduation Reservations The reservation forms for the Project Grad party are available now - on the website, here in the Panther Purr, and in the main office. Please take a moment and read the following guidelines to smooth the reservation process for your student.

BOTH student and parent/guardian MUST SIGN the reservation contract area. Each year, many reservations are delayed due to the lack of a parent/guardian and/or student signature. Even though there is language in the contract that seems to contradict the requirement for both signatures, we need to know that both the parent/guardian AND the student are aware of the rules and guidelines for the party, and the signatures acknowledge this.

Please make sure that you follow the instructions on the reservation form to make sure your payment is properly recorded – put your student’s name on the memo line of the check AND write the check number in the space indicated on the form.

If possible, please return your student’s reservation form and payment in a sealed envelope, and avoid the use of staples. Paper clips are preferable to staples if you are not using an envelope. The forms are to be returned to the main office – Project Grad has a mailbox to the right as you enter the main office.

Project Grad is a celebration for the entire SRHS Senior Class 2014 – it is not limited to graduates only. If your student has had academic or other difficulty and will not be “walking” in the graduation ceremony, they are still encouraged to attend Project Grad and celebrate the year with their class!

The reservation for the party is $70 which includes EVERYTHING at the party. Students only need to bring their ID that night – no money is required after they have their reservation. No tickets are issued – reservation lists are posted in the main hallway beginning two weeks before school ends. Please have your student check for their name to make sure the reservation was received.

If your student needs financial assistance, the principals will have scholarship forms. NO STUDENT IS TURNED AWAY FROM PROJECT GRAD FOR LACK OF FUNDS!

Please plan on submitting your student’s reservation by the end of April. The last minute reservations create problems. Last year, over 50 students bought their tickets “at the door” – we want as close to 100% participation as possible, but waiting until the last minute makes it difficult to properly register the students for the event. This is a safety issue as well as a logistical issue – if a student registers at the door and there is a health concern, it is difficult to get that information to all of the staff at the last minute.

Thank you for keeping this information in mind when the time comes to reserve your student’s spot at this amazing celebration of their accomplishments!

Please contact Reservation Chair Mary Lou Smith at (707) 575-7301 or [email protected] (email is preferred) if you have questions.

Boys BasketballThe Boys Basketball team just completed the best preseason in over ten years. They started off with wins over Antioch and Vintage on the road before falling to 1-2 in the Rose City Tournament, which included the worst game of the year, a loss to Cardinal Newman by 35 points. The team worked hard on defense practice and then played Division 1 powerhouse Pittsburg at home. In the loss, the team improved its play. Two days later, the Panthers bounced back and beat a very tough 8-1 Novato team at home. Novato was held to a season low 44 points. Rudy Gutierrez came up big, shooting a high percentage throughout the game and hit a big shot down the stretch to seal the victory. After Christmas, the Panthers traveled to Petaluma where the defense again made the difference, led by Dustin Rome with eleven rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals to go with seven points. The Panthers opened the Sonoma County Classic at Piner against the home Prospectors. Santa Rosa had been 1-16 versus Piner over the last nine years. After the dust settled, the Panthers edged Piner 56-55. Daniel Cresta finished with twelve points and seven rebounds and hit two key free throws at the end to get the win. In the second round, the Panthers lost a close game to Mt. Eden (Hayward) by four points. Daniel Cresta was again a bright spot, finishing with 17 points. This set up a rematch with Cardinal Newman for third place.  Cardinal Newman started out with a six point lead early. After hitting a near half-court shot at the end of the first quarter they pushed the lead to nine. The Panthers hung tough in the second quarter with outstanding defense led by Dustin Rome, Trevor Weitzenberg and Freshman Kalei Aukai to cut the lead to five by halftime. Coming out of the locker, the Panthers’ defense clamped down, leading to easy buckets and a 20-6 run in the third quarter. Rudy Gutierrez sparked the comeback making great passes to set up other players, as well as hitting key shots on his way to a game high twenty points. With an eleven point Panther lead halfway into the fourth, Cardinal Newman made a run forcing turnovers into points. With the game on the line, Trevor Weitzenberg hit two free throws to seal the victory. Daniel Cresta and Rudy Gutierrez were both named to the All-Tournament team. The 7-4 finish to the preseason is the best in over ten years. Along the way, the Panthers ended a six-game losing streak to Vintage, three-game losing streak to Novato, thirteen-game losing streak to Piner and a fifteen-game losing streak to Cardinal Newman, which dated back to December 28th, 2005.

Tennis Spectators to Leave the Courts as WinnersTennis has been referred to as the “Sport of a Lifetime,” and this year’s boys team, which is one of the most talented ever, is determined not only to reward themselves by giving one hundred percent on court, but their friends and families as well. The boys really want expose as many folks to the greatness of this game as possible. So, thanks to the generosity of coach Corky Cramer and CorTennis, at the conclusion of each home match some lucky fan’s name will be drawn for some tennis merchandise. T-shirts, hats and balls are some of the goodies up for grabs. All you have to do is drop your draw stub in our Dunlop canister and be there at the conclusion of the match to claim your prize.

Mark your calendars and come by the courts to get a taste of tennis! Maybe next year you’ll be reaching over the net to shake hands with your unfortunate opponent as you walk away with another "W."

Contact coach Corky Cramer at (707) 318-1226 with any of your tennis questions.

Girls BasketballThe Panthers varsity team took first place in the 38th Annual Terra Nova Tiger Classic by beating St. Francis (2013 DII NorCal Champions) 56-43 in the championship game. Senior Morgan Bertsch was selected as the tournament MVP with Kylie Oden being chosen for the All Tournament team. The Lady Panthers closed out 2013 with big wins against Division I powerhouses Deer Valley and Brea Olinda from Southern California in the 2013 West Coast Jamboree. Morgan Bertsch and Katie Daly were named to the All Tournament Team after stellar performances in the three game tournament. In addition to the two great tournament performances the Lady Panthers also enjoyed wins over Vintage 77-23, San Ramon Valley 69-42, Clayton Valley 69-58 and Novato 77-29 during the month of December.

On January 7 the Panthers opened the NBL season with a decisive 70-45 win over rival Montgomery behind Morgan Bertsch’s triple double 20 points, 19 rebounds and 11 blocked shots. Santa Rosa bounced right back two nights later to win their second league game 58-37 over Windsor as Devin Murray led the Panthers with 17 points followed by Morgan Bertsch with 16.

In what could be a record breaking season for the Panthers, Santa Rosa’s overall record currently stands at 11-1 and are ranked #1 in the North Coast Section Division I in addition to being ranked #11 overall in the state and #88 in the entire country!

Sports Eligibility: The Big QuestionDoes your student want to play a sport at SRHS?  Are you confused as to how to go about doing this?  The first step is to understand the Sport Seasons.Fall: Soccer, Volleyball, Girls Tennis, Girls Golf, Cross Country, Football & Winter: Basketball, Wrestling - ClosedSpring: Baseball, Softball, Swimming/Diving, Boys Tennis, Boys Golf, Track and Field, Badminton - Application Process Closes on February 14th, tryouts on Monday February 10th.• Pick up an Athletic Packet from the Main Office. This athletic packet must be completed with an attached sports

physical signed by a doctor dated after June 1, 2013.• Contact the coach for the sport your student is interested in. Each coach has a box located in the Main Office.

Coaches check their boxes regularly. Many off season sports have Open Field or Gyms that are available outside of regular season.

• Student athletes must have a 2.0 in the prior grading period to be eligible. If they have between a 1.4 and a 1.99, then we can look at the grading period prior. If the grading period prior was above a 2.0 then the student may be eligible for probation status. A student is only allowed one probation status usage for all of 10-12 grades.

• If your student has transferred to SRHS from another high school, you will need to speak to Ms. Valente [email protected] to fill out all appropriate transfer paperwork for eligibility.

• If your student is not eligible due to GPA during the grading period that the sport try outs occur, a student can turn in their athletic packet and still be eligible to practice with the team until the next grading period, if the coach has space and agrees.

Remember, academics come first. Athletics are a privilege, not a right.

Track and FieldThe Track and Field season begins with practice on Tuesday, February 11th at 3:15 at Nevers Field. Track and Field is the largest participated sport for high school girls nationwide and the second largest boys sport behind football. There is good reason. There are sixteen separate events for the students to participate in during the course of one regular track and field meet. At Santa Rosa we have Varsity Boys and Girls teams along with Junior Varsity Boys and Girls. Each athlete can compete in up to four events in any meet in any of the divisions. No one sits on the bench. We have one of the finest coaching staffs in Northern California with a combined coaching age of over 200 years. Every event has an expert coach to teach our students.

Last year our girls team won the North Bay League Championship meet, as well as the Redwood Area North Coast section meet. We look to repeat the title we have won two of the past three years. Our boys are always competitive, and we have so many returnees to make us a title threat. Each of our students is coached not only in track and field but in sportsmanship and good citizenship. We have well over 100 kids signed up so far and expect a few more.

Spring Sport Contact InformationSpring Sport Tryouts begin on Monday, February 10th. Athletic Packets must be turned in by February 7th at noon to be eligible to try out on Monday. Panther BaseballThe baseball program had another successful year raising funds through the Christmas fundraiser, in which they raised a good amount of money for the program. But more impressive than anything money can buy, the players were able to donate 45 Christmas trees to families in need. Every tree found a home and brought joy and warmth to those houses.

And now as the winter season approaches a close, it’s about time to knock off the dust of the glove and cleats and get ready for some Baseball. Any students that have the itch to come out and play, the first day of practice is coming quick - Feburary 10th, with the first official game against a very strong team, Mission, coming all the way from San Jose in the first annual NCS Division I North/ South game.

T0 be ready to participate in practice you will need to get your athletic packets taken care of and turned in to either the Head Varsity Coach or the administration soon. No one will be allowed to step on the field unless his packet is filled out correctly and he is cleared by the school, no exception.

The baseball team over the years has been rebuilding a foundation and is starting to take full force as it heads into its toughest season in the past couple decades. The schedule has seven Division I games and we should expect another great year of great games. The players are hungry and ready to represent SRHS on the field by showing its respect and work ethic it has worked so hard on over the last few years. Don’t let the records of the past fool you. A 3-21 record last year was full of exciting games and we just ended up on the wrong side of 11 one-run games. But with failure comes success as we graduated another class of seniors who ALL headed to college. These young men also get to say they are playing baseball in college. Three of the four seniors last year are now currently playing college baseball. Jasper Hillier (Sonoma State), Chase Cianfichi (Santa Rosa JC) and Tano Garza (Marin JC). So let’s go Panthers and get ready to play ball!!

SRHS Athletes can earn high school credit Santa Rosa City School’s Board has approved Administrative Regulation 6146.11 Alternative Credits toward graduation, last year. What this regulation states is that any SRHS Student Athlete who participates on a sanctioned CIF team, can earn 5 credits of P.E. for this participation. Athletes can earn up to 10 total credits for their high school participation but before an athlete can earn any credits through athletics, the athlete must have completed ten P.E. credits prior to the start of the sanctioned sport. Once the regular season ends for the athlete, the coach of that sport will forward all eligible names to administration for awards of credit. Athletes cannot miss more than ten days of practice to be eligible for credits toward graduation.  The athlete will not have to deal with any paperwork to receive credits.  All paperwork will be dealt with through coaches/administration/athletic directors/counselors. Counselors will be given information on approved student athletes and they will add these credits to their transcript upon receiving approval through administration. Students can ask their coach if they are eligible at the end of the season. They can then monitor by checking on HAC. If they have any questions, or concerns, after the season is completed, they may contact Ms. Valente, the Assistant Principal in charge at [email protected].
