Leading up to the bigtwo days of the month, 10th and 21st ofSeptember, there is a lot of events. Ev-ery year, organizers schedule queenpageants all over the country that areusually held days prior to the 10th. Thesepageants lead to the coronation of themany queens around the country on the10th of September. In San Pedro, it hasbecome a tradition that hundreds ofpeople flock to the Old Football Field tosee who will be the next beauty ambas-sador for the island. It’s a prestigiouspageant that brings the community to-gether in one celebration mood. “Look, Grandpa! A reindeer!” “Reindeer? Where?” “Over there,” Davin pointed off the side of the road into the bush. “Davin, that’s a goat. It’s not a reindeer.” “It’s not?” When we got home I asked Melody, “Have you ever taken this boy to the zoo?” “No,” she said. “I planned it a couple of times but things didn’t work out.” “Well, I’m going to take him to the zoo,” I said. “Every four year-old needs togo to the zoo. This boy would love the monkeys.” “Grandma, we’re going to go see the monkeys,” Davin said to Dulce as wewere leaving the house the next morning. In Belize City we stopped at the market before catching the bus for the BelizeZoo. “What are we buying Grandpa?” “We’re getting some peanuts,” I told him. “Monkeys like peanuts. They’ll dojust about anything for a peanut.” At the Belize Zoo, we saw the jaguar and the tapir but what we really wantedwas the monkeys. Finally we came to the monkey cage. “Hey,” I called to a zoo attendant. “Why aren’t there any monkeys out? I wantthis boy to see a monkey.” “It’s mating season right now,” the attendant said. “They’re inside.” “Grandpa, I want to see a monkey,” Davin said. “Do you think they would come out for peanuts?” I asked the attendant. “I don’t know,” he said. “Would you?”
