FROM THE PASTOR ’S COLLECTION
THOUGHTS ON OUR 100TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR
In our September monthly I wrote about our forthcoming one hundredth anniversary next year in 2015 our parish will be celebrating. It is an exciting and joyous time for us as we prepare for this historic event. Many of our parishioners have come together to form different committees to work on a variety of events scheduled for our 100th celebration. I have also appealed to you, our parishioners to come forth and volunteer your services – your stewardship of time, talents and yes, if need be your resources – to help with these events and their success. It will be for us a time of remembrance and joyous celebration. It is a time of remembrance because this anniversary we about to celebrate in 2015 would not be possible were it not for the abundant sacrifice and the abiding faith of our parish founders, who chose to establish a house of worship before they had acquired their own homes and assured their economic security. They lived the words of the Bible that told them to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength. Never forget these commands that I am giving to you today. Teach them to your children. Repeat them when you are at home and when you are away, when you are resting and when you are working.”(Deuteronomy 6), and which said to them, “Parents raise your children with Christian discipline and instruction.” (Galatians 6) It is a time of celebration because their sacrifice and faith were not in vain. What they accomplished still lives and grows in the generations that succeeded them. What they began continues to inspire and guide those who have followed. They have made possible this time, fast approaching of remembrance and of celebration. But this is also an opportunity for us to ask a question – Will we do as much for our children and grandchildren as they did for us? What we teach them and what we offer to them by way of example and sacrifice and faithfulness today shall determine the nature and the quality of what they will remember and celebrate in the years to come. Let us, therefore, resolve that we, in our turn, as we are preparing for this historic event, the celebration of our parishes one hundred years, shall be worthy of remembrance as were those who preceded us.

D IONYSIOS THE AREOPAGITE , OCTOBER 3
This Saint was from Athens, a learned man, and a member of the famous judicial court of Mars Hill (in Greek Aeros Pagos, hence the name Areopagite (see Acts 17:19-34). When Saint Paul preached in Athens, he was one of the first there to believe in Christ, and, according to some, became the first bishop of that city. Others say -- and this may be more probable--that he was the second Bishop of Athens, after Saint Hierotheus, whom Dionysios calls his friend and teacher "after Paul" (On the Divine Names, 3:2). With Saint Hierotheus he was also present at the Dormition of the most holy Theotokos; the Doxasticon of the Aposticha for the service of the Dormition is partly taken from a passage in Chapter III of On the Divine Names. According to ancient tradition, he received a martyr's end (according to some, in Athens itself) about the year 96. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone Since thou hadst been instructed in uprightness thoroughly and wast vigilant in all things, thou wast clothed with a good conscience as befitteth one holy. Thou didst draw from the Chosen Vessel ineffable mysteries; and having kept the Faith, thou didst finish a like course, O Hieromartyr Dionysios. Intercede with Christ God that our souls be saved. Kontakion in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone In spirit, thou dist pass through Heaven's gates, instructed by the great Apostle who attained to the third Heaven's heights, and wast made rich in all knowledge of things beyond speech; and then thou, O Dionysios, didst illuminate them that slumbered in the darkness of their ignorance. Hence we all cry out: Rejoice, O universal Father.

PHILIP THE APOSTLE OF THE 70, ONE OF
THE 7 DEACONS, OCTOBER 11
Saint Philip, who had four daughters that prophesied, was from Caesarea of Palestine. He preached throughout Samaria; it was he also who met the eunuch of Candace, the Queen of the Ethiopians, as the eunuch was reading the Prophet Esaias, and he instructed and baptized him (Acts 8:26-39). He reposed in Tralles of Asia Minor while preaching the Gospel.
Apolytikion in the Third Tone O Holy Apostle Philip, intercede to our merciful God, that He may grant our souls forgiveness of sins.
Kontakion in the Fourth Tone Since thou wast enlightened by the Holy Spirit, thou enlightenest the earth and all its fullness with the beams of thy wise teachings and miracles, Apostle Philip, thou sacred initiate.
LUKE THE EVANGELIST , OCTOBER 18
This Apostle was an Antiochean, a physician by trade, and a disciple and companion of Paul. He wrote his Gospel in Greek after Matthew and Mark, after which he wrote the Acts of the Apostles, and dedicated both works to Theophilus, who, according to some, was Governor of Achaia. He lived some eighty-six years and died in Achaia, perhaps in Patras, the capital of this district. His emblem is the calf, the third symbolical beast mentioned by Ezekiel (1:10), which is a symbol of Christ's sacrificial and priestly office, as Saint Irenaeus says.
Apolytikion in the Third Tone O Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke, intercede to our merciful God, that He may grant our souls forgiveness of sins.
Kontakion in the Fourth Tone As a disciple of the Word of God, with Paul you illuminated all the earth and dispelled the gloom in writing Christ's divine Gospel.

THE HOLY GREAT MARTYR DEMETRIUS THE MYRRH -STREAMER ,
OCTOBER 26
Saint Demetrius was a Thessalonian, a most pious son of pious and noble parents, and a teacher of the Faith of Christ. When Maximian first came to Thessalonica in 290, he raised the Saint to the rank of Duke of Thessaly. But when it was discovered that the Saint was a Christian, he was arrested and kept bound in a bath-house. While the games were under way in the city, Maximian was a spectator there. A certain friend of his, a barbarian who was a notable wrestler, Lyaeus by name, waxing haughty because of the height and strength of his body, boasted in the stadium and challenged the citizens to a contest with him. All that fought with him were defeated. Seeing this, a certain youth named Nestor, aquaintance of Demetrius', came to the Saint in the bath-house and asked his blessing to fight Lyaeus single-handed. Receiving this blessing and sealing himself with the sign of the precious Cross, he presented himself in the stadium, and said, "O God of Demetrius, help me!" and straightway he engaged Lyaeus in combat and smote him with a mortal blow to the heart, leaving the former boaster lifeless upon the earth. Maximian was sorely grieved over this, and when he learned who was the cause of this defeat, he commanded straightway and Demetrius was pierced with lances while he was yet in the bath-house, As for Nestor, Maximian commanded that he be slain with his own sword. Apolytikion in the Third Tone The world has found in you a great champion in time of peril, as you emerged the victor in routing the barbarians. For as you brought to naught the boasts of Lyaios, imparting courage to Nestor in the stadium, in like manner, holy one, great Martyr Dimitrios, invoke Christ God for us, that He may grant us His great mercy. Kontakion in the Second Tone God, who gave you invincible power and with care kept your city invulnerable, royally clothed the Church in purple with the streams of your blood, for you are her strength, O Dimitrios.

ST SPYRIDON STEWARDSHIP REPORT
As of August 30, 2014, the Stewardship program resulted in the collection of a remarkable $57,519 from 94 families and individuals, most of whom increased their contributions from the previous year. Considering there remain approximately 75 uncommitted stewards, were this trend to continue, a balanced budget is certainly within reach, an unparalleled achievement.

GREEK SCHOOL NEWS
Our 2014-2015 school year commenced on September 15th. The scheduled classes meet Monday through Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Pre-K class is held on Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The first presentation of the year by the Greek School will take place on Sunday, October 26th after Divine Liturgy in commemoration of OXI Day. The Greek School families will join the AHEPA and Daughters of Penelope on this day in sponsoring the Coffee Hour.
“Ελληνομάθεια” Greek Language Proficiency Certification—UPDATE!
A goal of our Geek School program, since Ka. Eleni Anagnostopoulos commenced teaching our older Greek School students four years ago, was to have these students participate in the Greek Language proficiency exam program. This goal was realized when we had students from our Greek School register to take the Ellhnomatheia exam in May, 2014.
We are very pleased to announce that all of our high school age Greek School students who registered and took the Greek Language Proficiency Exam this past May have received notification that they have been successfully certified at the A1 Exam level for students over the age of 12. Congratulations to Panagiotis and Theodore Panoutsopoulos, Anastasia Psilos and Nikos Spentzos! We also wish to congratulate Janet Spentzos, who has been a student of our adult Greek classes for a number of years, for also taking the exam and being successfully certified at the A1 exam level. We are very proud of their achievement. ΑΞΙΑ!
All successful exam participants from our community will be presented with an official certificate of competency at a ceremony to be held in the near future hosted by the Consulate General of Greece in Boston in conjunction with the Metropolis of Boston.
The A1 exam level confirms basic verbal, comprehension and written knowledge of the Greek language. In future years, we hope to have new students participate in the A1 exam as a capstone to their years of Greek School, and we also hope the recent participants continue to achieve progressively higher levels of certification.
A sincere thank you to Ka. Eleni Anagnostopoulos for her dedication and enthusiasm to help educate our youth in the Greek Language, and to K. Basile Panoutsopoulos for teaching the Adult Greek classes and together with Ka. Eleni helping prepare the students for this milestone exam.
