The Grand Chapter will open with a big 90th Birthday Party featuring great food, drink and music. This is a great time to meet brothers and make new friends. Friday evening, August 6 will be the Night at the Ball Park. Your admission ticket to see the Cleveland Indians take on the Minnesota Twins is complimentary with your Grand Chapter registration. NatioNal CoNClave Big suCCess ReCoRd ClevelaNd MeetiNg attRaCts 92 delegates

Ninety-two delegates from the various chapters of Sigma Tau Gamma scattered over the United States braved stormy wintery weather to attend the Ninth Biennial Conclave of the fraternity at the Hotel Allerton, Cleveland, Ohio, on December 28, 29, 30, 1938. This is the largest group ever to attend a national Conclave of Sigma Tau Gamma, and when one considers the fact that the convention city was not centrally located the record attendance speaks graphically of the increased spirit and enthusiasm within the fraternity.

The convention endorsed highly the progressive policies of the Grand Council, re-electing all Grand Council members with the exception of the Grand President, D.K. Winebrenner, who was selected for the vacant post of Executive Secretary. Mr. E. H. McCune, Registrar of the Durant, Oklahoma, State Teachers College, and one of the seventeen founders of the fraternity, was advanced from Province Archon to the national presidency. Grand Council members re-elected were: First Vice-President Hubert L. Minton, Second Vice-President Glen Pennington, Grand Auditor Roy Ferguson, and Grand Historian Haddon S. Rhodes.

Social activities of the Conclave included three banquets, smokers, bowling and swimming parties, and tours to local points of interest, as well as a full program of magic by Magician Robert Kline, alumnus of Pi Chapter. Instructional features included panel discussions on the chapter and national program. Brother Ernie Williams headed the committee from Iota Chapter, which served so well as hosts to the fraternity delegates. Most important of the constitutional changes adopted were those dealing with liberalization of the expansion policies. Although the fraternity remains a “teachers college” fraternity, chapters may now be installed in any institution, which meets the requirements of a “teachers college” as defined by the American Association of Teachers Colleges. Institutions which have other departments but which have separate unified education departments accredited by the Association or similar accrediting agencies will accordingly be eligible for charters.

tHaNk you fRoM tHe fouNdatioN PResideNt

On behalf of our many undergraduate brothers who have benefited, please accept my deep appreciation to those of you who contributed to the Sigma Tau Gamma Foundation in 2009.

The ability of Sigma Tau Gamma to provide comprehensive programs to our undergraduate brothers and their chapters is increasingly dependent upon the generosity of alumni brothers who express appreciation for their own Fraternity experience with their gifts.

We are privileged to honor you in this issue of the SAGA. Thank you for “Making Sig Tau better for the next guy!”

gaMMa CHi CHaPteR (MiCHigaN teCH uNiveRsity)Every February, Michigan Tech University hosts a Winter Carnival where student organizations, fraternities and sororities brave the cold to compete in the Month Long Statue Competition. The Gamma Chi Chapter participated in the competition, designing a 25-foot tall Jenga statue to match this year’s theme: “Games we know, captured in the snow.”

The statue, made of snow and water, took 500 hours to complete. Between 20 and 30 Gamma Chi brothers pulled an all-nighter the last night of the competition to complete their statue by 8 a.m. Sigma Tau Gamma placed 5th in the Statue Competition and 4th overall in the Winter Carnival.

Epsilon Kappa Chapter at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth held its 2nd annual Veterans Appreciation Banquet to benefit the Gold Star Mothers Foundation. Brothers Edgar Roth, Andrew Davidson and Matt Desrochers chaired the event. Epsilon Kappa Chapter was able to broadcast the event live using the University website which allowed for Brother Nicholas Custadio to watch the banquet live while currently on active duty on his second tour in Afghanistan. The event was attended by the Mayor of the City of New Bedford as well as councilman Steven Martins of New Bedford, who presented Sigma Tau Gamma with a distinguished recognition by the City of New Bedford for the banquet. Epsilon Kappa Chapter was able to raise over $2,000 for the Gold Star Mothers through ticket sales and the sales of Support our Veterans wristbands. There were many veterans, parents of veterans and active service men and women who attended as well as staff, faculty and administration of the University. The highlight of the event was the special keynote speaker, Col. David Hunt from Fox National News. Epsilon Kappa Chapter is looking forward to holding its 3rd Annual Veterans Appreciation Banquet in 2011.

gaMMa Beta CHaPteR (uNiveRsity of WisCoNsiN–steveNs PoiNt)The Gamma Beta Chapter was nominated and won the Student Organization of the Year at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. The Policy and Advisory Committee for Student Organizations selected Sigma Tau Gamma as the winners for standing out above the rest of the organizations on campus. They were honored at the University Leadership Awards Ceremony on May 5.

gaMMa Psi CHaPteR (illiNois state uNiveRsity)During Valentine’s weekend, the Gamma Psi Chapter raised thousands of dollars by selling roses on campus to assist the non-profit organization, Flowers for Heroes (FFH). An alumnus from the Gamma Psi Chapter developed FFH, which is dedicated to supporting Gold Star families of men and women killed in the Armed Forces.

The funds raised by the Gamma Psi Chapter will help support an upcoming Memorial Day event, known as the Veteran Flower Placement Ceremony. This event will honor veterans laid to rest at Danville National Cemetery by placing flowers on every military gravesite.

ePsiloN oMiCRoN CHaPteR (MoNMoutH uNiveRsity)On March 31, the Epsilon Omicron Chapter held their “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” fundraiser that raised more than $1,000 to go towards the Mike McNeil Foundation. The contestants consisted of members of fraternities and sororities on campus who had to fill in lyrics from songs. However, this year the Epsilon Omicron Chapter incorporated a “texting” game in which the entire audience could participate by allowing them to play along via text messages. This allowed for more audience interaction and a chance for everyone to play, even if they were not on stage. The fundraiser was a success and the Epsilon Omicron Chapter looks forward to an even better event for next year.

alPHa Psi CHaPteR (PeNN state uNiveRsity)Within the past two years, the Alpha Psi Chapter has raised more than $80,000 to help fight pediatric cancer for Penn State’s IFC/Panhellenic Dance MaraTHON. The THON is the world’s largest student run philanthropy and raised more than $7.8 million this past year.

Alpha Psi brothers Chris Wertman and Patrick Mangiagli were two of Alpha Psi’s dancers who stayed awake for 46 hours straight at the event.

Sigma Tau Gamma is returning to two more campuses by forming Provisional Chapters that are on their way to success.

Twenty-five campus leaders have formed the new Provisional Chapter at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The Beta Mu Chapter had been inactive since 1980. They have already held their first initiation ceremony with the assistance of Beta Kappa Chapter (UW-La Crosse) and Kappa Provisional Chapter (UW-Whitewater). The new group has already been successful by placing a great emphasis on scholarship. The average semester GPA of the group members was 3.31, giving them the distinction of having the highest GPA of any fraternity or sorority on campus and also placing them over half a point higher than the all men’s average. This new provisional chapter volunteers at the Christine Ann Center for abused women and partners with Merrill Middle School to mentor fourth and fifth graders.

The new Beta Mu Provisional Chapter members are: Thomas Wolf (President), Troy Landry (Executive Vice President), Charles Block (Vice President of Membership), Ryan Nettescheim (Vice President of Programs) Humoud Al Ajlan (Vice President of Finance) Alex Abendschein, Daniel Ahasy, Nicholas Baus, Kyler Boeck, Chad Brockman, Michael Calvert, Chris Cheney, Kent Ellis, John Gerrits, Dylan Grier-Welch, Christopher Kosirog, Austin Lund, Austin Messer, Airen Pfeiffer, Corbett Schermetzler, Tim Smith, Nathan Stepanek, John Thiel, Peter Truell and Michael Wesenberg.

Sigma Tau Gamma has also returned to the campus of East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina with twenty-six campus leaders forming the new Delta Alpha Provisional Chapter. Delta Alpha Chapter had been inactive since 1998. They held their first initiation on April 24, 2010, followed by their first White Rose formal.

Ben Noble is Vice President of Membership and has his sights set on a strong recruitment drive over the summer and into fall semester. The provisional chapter goal is to reach 45 to 50 members next semester. Robert (Ben) Mendenhall plans to focus on community service projects as Vice President of Programs. Josiah Goodson will manage the money as Vice President of Finance. Alex Davis is the Faculty Advisor.

Two Provisional Chapters Begin

On Saturday, May 8, 2010, president-elect, Richard Harguindeguy, presented the Epsilon Rho Charter to forty men at Salisbury University in Maryland. Installing officers who participated in the installation ceremonies included: Greg Rumpf, Board of Directors; Ken Vaughn, Regional Vice President; Dan Morgan, District Director; Tom Connell, Provisional Chapter Mentor; and Michael Smoll, Director of Expansion.

The featured speaker at the event was Dr. Rosemary Thomas, Vice President of University Advancement and Executive Director of the Salisbury University Foundation. Dr. Thomas shared stories of the many doors that Sigma Tau Gamma membership opened for her late father Adna Thomas, Xi ’63 (Fairmont State College).

The Provisional Chapter members of Epsilon Rho participated in a mini-retreat prior to the installation ceremonies on Saturday morning to discuss the Purpose and Principle of Sigma Tau Gamma and to answer any questions.

Sigma Tau Gamma formed in October 2008 at Salisbury University when Patrick Gotham, then a student government leader, accepted an invitation to organize a provisional chapter. The newly organized group quickly became involved on campus. After joining IFC, the Salisbury Provisional Chapter participated in recruitment in February 2009 and launched the beginning of its Path of Principles programming. They also participated in

various service activities on campus and organized their own event supporting the American Cancer Society.

The fall semester began with a retreat attended by Addison Schopp and Justin Leo of the HQ staff. The retreat was designed to help the Salisbury Provisional Chapter formulate the goals and plans by which they would realize their objective of achieving chapter status by the end of the school year.

The Salisbury Provisional Chapter accomplished their objective and we congratulate Epsilon Rho members: Paul Manly (President), Gene Bernadin St. Val (Executive Vice President), William Hudson (Vice President of Membership), Daniel Baden (Vice President of Programs), Patrick Gotham (Vice President of Finance), Tom Spencer, Scott Cocklin, Adam Ehrisman, Luis Hernandez, Brandon Che Lane, Kyle Manakyan, Lief Zumstein, Matthew Dennison, Jeffrey Gold, Zachary Grant, Cedrick Hardnett, Kristopher Mall, Michael Drake, Michael Hryckewycz, Bailey Pechner, Blair Pechner, Vlad Raina, Adam Springborn, Morgan Strong, Matthew Wolf, Matthew Wolford, Aaron Yankey, Kevin Knudsen, Hakeem Walton, Kyle Miller, Charles Hinds, Eric Brumburgh, John Hampton, William Tiller, Tyler Suplee, Stephen Hall, Zachary Heeter, Raymond Edelen, Anthony DeNuto, and Steven Beck.

Alpha Chapter at the University of Central Missouri moved into a new forty-man house at the beginning of the fall 2009 semester. The house is located at 708 South Holden Street, on the main thoroughfare through campus. It is within easy walking distance to all campus academic buildings, athletic facilities, and the James C. Kirkpatrick library.

The Alpha Chapter Alumni Association, under the leadership of Bruce Guier, Alpha ’83, Alumni Advisor, Sean Owens, Alpha ’00, President and Brent Ross, Alpha ’89, Vice President, negotiated a three-year lease on the property after the fraternity that originally occupied the three year old facility was no longer able to retain it.

The upper level of the house contains a house director apartment and four residential pods with four bedrooms in each pod. The lower level features one residential pod, chapter room, television room, exercise room, computer room, dining room, and commercial kitchen.

Thirty men lived in the house during the past school year. That number goes to 36 for the 2010-11 school year, with a goal of achieving full occupancy by the third year of the lease. Alpha Chapter is implementing a summer recruitment program in order to achieve its membership and occupancy goals. “We understand that houses do not recruit members,” noted Dylan Campbell, Alpha Chapter President at the time the house was acquired.

Alpha Chapter has worked hard to build the kind of reputation needed to recruit the highest quality members. Their success was evident at the 2010 UCM Greek Awards Assembly that closed Greek Week. Honors included Outstanding New Member

Education Program and Outstanding Scholarship Program. Their alumni advisor, Bruce Guier, was named Outstanding Chapter Advisor.

A significant factor in Alpha Chapter’s recent success has been the involvement and support of its alumni.

Wayne Terpstra, Alpha ’80 and Dr. Barry Herron, Alpha ’87, presented 13 scholarships at the UCM Greek Assembly, on behalf of the Alpha Chapter Alumni Association. The scholarship awards, valued at $10,020, were presented to undergraduate members who excelled in academics, citizenship and leadership. Funding came from the Irwin and Ferne Graves Heritage Fund in the Sigma Tau Gamma Foundation. This was by far the largest presentation of scholarships at the assembly.

Neil Talbott & Sam Smith received the Irwin L. Graves Highest Member GPA Scholarship. Both achieved perfect 4.0 GPAs. Mark Wandersee received the Irwin L. Graves Highest Associate Member GPA Scholarship, and Cody McFatrich received the Irwin L. Graves Most Improved GPA Scholarship.

Scholarships honoring exemplification of the Principles of Sigma Tau Gamma went to Tyler Gregg (Value), Sam Smith (Learning), Ryan Schlender (Leadership), Dallas Young (Excellence), Holden Smith (Benefit), and Aaron Rippy (Integrity). Jeremy Luecke and Adam Eilers received House Director Scholarship for Fall Semester and Dylan Campbell received the Spring Semester House Director Scholarship. Neil Talbott received the James Kilmer Scholarship from the UCM Foundation.

Alpha Chapter Occupies New House and Wins Top Honors

In addition, the Alumni Association awarded $75 grants to eight members to assist with participation in the Sigma Tau Gamma Regional Leadership Conclave held at the Westin Crown Center Hotel in Kansas City in February. These grants went to: Neil Talbott, Cody McFatrich, Ian Adams, Tyler Gregg, Stephen Derks, Ryan Drury, Dallas Young and Mark Wandersee.

A grant for $1,500 was awarded on February 1, 2010 for the purchase of two new computers and related hardware for the chapter house. In addition to the Microsoft Office suite of software, these computers are running CAD (computer aided design), construction project planning and construction project

cost estimating software. Alpha Chapter is grateful to the UCM Construction Management faculty for their assistance with this project. The Alpha Chapter Alumni Association also supports, with a grant of $1,200 per year, high-speed wireless access Internet to assist members with their studies.

“Sigma Tau Gamma is clearly the academic and scholarship leader at UCM,” said Bill Bernier, the Fraternity’s national Executive Vice President. “We are proud of the extraordinary support extended to Alpha Chapter by legacy of Win and Ferne Graves and the annual gifts of alumni donors to the Irwin L. and Ferne Graves Heritage Fund in the Sigma Tau Gamma Foundation.”
