Who were the perpetrators? How did they gain power? The perpetrators were the Hutus. They

gained power by gaining control of Rwandan government in 1959, reversing the power structure and triggering armed opposition by the Tutsis. The Hutu's took over the governments by organizing elections

What does this mean and how did they “reverse the power structure”? What allowed them to do this?

What rationale did the perpetrators give for their actions? There has been a longstanding conflict

between the Hutus and Tutsis. It was nothing to do with religion and language. Tutsis perceived to have a greater wealth and social status. The Tutsis had a monarchy dating back to the 15th century; this was overthrown at the urging of Belgian colonizers in the early 1960s and the Hutu took power by force in Rwanda. There was also an assassination of Juvénal Habyarimana

The Hutus blamed the Tutsis for the assassination of Juvenal Habyarmiana.

Who were the victims? Why was this group targeted?

The victims are the Tutsis. They were targeted because the Hutu extremists in Rwanda used the Burundi crisis as an opportunity to fan hostility against Tutsis in their country.

How was the genocide carried out? Yes, propaganda was using the radios saying the

Tutsis were cockroaches and devils Their kind of violence was massacres. They just go

around and kill everyone! They didn’t try to cover it up, they just killed a lot of the same race of the Tutsis.

The technology that was used was how they announced bad things about the Tutsis by saying them on Radios, or Loudspeakers. They also used weapons to threaten and kill them. They used the machetes.

What years did the genocide take place? What was the location? It took place in 1994 and took place in

Rwanda.

How does this fit the definition of genocide?

This fits the definition of genocide because there were a whole bunch of massacres trying to wipe out a whole entire race. They tried to dehumanize them so it seemed like they never had existed.

How were the perpetrators portrayed in the media? “There were no organized roundups as

there had been in Nazi Germany; Tutsis were slaughtered in their tracks, wherever they were found. The killing fields were everywhere. And when it was over, three out of every four Tutsis in Rwanda had been killed.”

The perpetrators were portrayed in the media by showing that they are big, scary. They killed everything and anything in their path. All they looked for was Tutsis to kill.

How were the victims portrayed in the media? “People were screaming all over the

country. The genocide had begun. It was extremely low tech – no gas chambers here – just machetes, spears and knives, wielded by Hutus, the majority tribe as they tried to wipe out the minority Tutsis. “

They were portrayed in the media by saying that they were scared that they were going to die. They were shown as not brave, fearful.

How did the media outlets cover the individuals trials attempts? Yes, the perpetrators went to trial. They

haven’t gone through all of them because they are still trying to find the top organizers of the genocide. There are currently more than one hundred thousand suspects still awaiting to be tried.

“"I request people of goodwill to free their minds of intoxication and poison," he said in a defiant tone similar to that he used during his 17 days of testimony in 2005. "I solemnly declare that I did not kill anyone or issue orders for anyone to be killed."

This shows that when they did trial people, they did not harm anyone from doing what they did in the past.
