Munusamy instructed civic officials in the city to pre- pare a detailed plan for san- itation and hygiene in the city to be reviewed and improved on a regular basis. In a sign that the govern- ment is serious about clean- ing up Chenna i, the minister has directed that existing conservancy facilities, slaughterhouses and com- munity health centres should be the primary focus of the department, official sources said. These facilities will be subject to periodical review to ensure that Chennai is as clean as the best maintained metros in the country. The officials will soon review civic amenities along Marina Beach and also examine the toilets and quality of drinking water facilities provided for the public, local administration ministry sources said. The minister visited the abattoir at Perambur and other public facilities in Central Chennai and ordered that drastic improvements be made in sanitation at these places and directed the corporation to enhance public hygiene, corporation commissioner D. Govin- daraj said around 10 lakh people pass through Chen- nai ever y day , but they do not have adequate toilets or provisions for drinking water. “There are no public amenities in congested parts of the city ,” he said. “ The situation is worse in con- gested and commercials areas like T Nagar and Broadway. The few facili- ties that are looked after by the corporation are poorly maintained and expose the public to infections. “With the incidence of diabetes rising in Chennai, there is an urgent need for more public toilets,” a city corporation medical officer said. The corporation will spend ` 12 lakh to estab- lish the facility. “Students of corporation schools and youngsters who are willing to use the facility may approach the stadium officer of the corporation to get permits. The facility will be open for use shortly, the mayor said. “The corporation has spent  ` 9 lakh on the project so far, he added. According to corporation sources, the civic body had also established a swim- ming pool at Myladys Park near Chennai Central and coaches have been hired to train youngsters to compete in national-level swimming competitions. Swimming coaches who had been recruited for the Marina Beach swimming pool have been shifted to the new pool. Final plan to expand city ready DC CORRESPONDENT CHENNAI July 21: Corporation of Chennai is ready to submit its final report on the expansion of the civic body to Greater Chennai within a month. The corporation is now in to the process of finalising the details relat- ing to new electoral rolls, solid waste management and the number of workers to be added to the new cor- poration limits. According to civic body sou rce s, the cor por ati on will conduct awareness programmes for the public ahead of the creation Greater Chennai. If required, public represe nta- tives and elected members can also approach the cor- poration for further clarifi- cations. Review meetings are being held with govern- ment representatives of the 42 local bodies that will be annexed by the corporation and local bodies are gearing up for the elections. shift.According to residents, the

incident left two railwayapprentices and an elderlyperson with minor injuries.The tank has a capacity of 1lakh-gallons.

“Some of my friends whowere at the site when theincident occurred saidApprentice Avenue nearbywas waterlogged after thetank burst. The waste of water could have been

avoided had the railways

maintained the tank,” saidPencilliah, a resident of Railway Colony.

Mr Ramdoss recollectedthat the tank had been left torot since the 1950s whenSouthern Railway startedborrowing water from thecity corporation. “Residentshave long demanded that the80-year-old overhead watertank be maintained. Thereare four other tanks that arealso in terrible shape and

could also rupture,” he said.
