The R’s of Engagement = Increased Student Achievement
in the 21st Century
Region 1 ESALisa Reinhiller
Project Coordinator
Project Overview• By building the capacity of teachers to design effective project-based
instruction, students will reach new levels of RELEVANCE & RIGOR and the RESULT will be students prepared to build collaborative RELATIONSHIPS and critical thinking skills in the 21st century framework.
– Achieving this requires a collaborative effort. 9 schools -- 20 high school teachers participated
– Participating teachers began the project by using SDMyLife to help students realize the RELEVANCE & RIGOR of their courses of study.
– Teachers participated in an online professional learning community to discuss & reflect on assigned readings, unit design and delivery.
– Participants received coaching and feedback on unit development and implementation
– Observed lessons and provided feedback to their teaching partner.
Project Goals
• Student Achievement Goal #1:• Increase the number of student scoring
proficient in participating schools by 1% in math and language arts from the spring 2010 DStep to the spring 2011 DStep.
Project GoalsPD Goal #1:• 90% of participating teachers will demonstrate a 2% increase in student
engagement in their classrooms through implementation of instructional units as measured by a pre and post perception survey.
PD Goal #1; Objective #1– 95% of participating teachers will recognize the value of using SD MyLife to
infuse rigor and/or relevance into their curriculum assessed by teacher reflections and coaching notes.
PD Goal #1; Objective #2– 95% of participating teachers will recognize the effectiveness of Stiggins’
instructional strategies in increasing student engagement as measured by pre and post perception survey.
Activities
• 4 large group training sessions• 1 large group sharing session• 3 coaching sessions• WebCT discussions and reflections
Learning Targets– Infuse Rigor and Relevance by incorporating SD MyLife– Incorporate Instructional Strategies of Stiggin’s/Marzano into
classroom practices through unit development and delivery.– Increase student engagement through technology integration– Increase student engagement through project-based learning
Evaluation Tools
• Pre-Post Student Engagement Survey– Teacher and Students
• Teacher reflections and feedback via WebCT• Classroom observations and coaching notes• Post Training Reflection (Before-During-After)• 11th grade Dakota STEP results
95% of participating teachers will recognize the value of using SD MyLife to infuse rigor and/or relevance into their curriculum assessed by teacher reflections and coaching notes.
After training…Use SDMyLife in my classroom (18/20 90%)have students explore a
science career.continue to use and engage
familiesI believe we should offer this
as a class in itself. What a great thing!
I may touch base on this during the fall, but our
counselor does a good job of fitting it in.
This will increase as C., the state and the district look
more into the benefits. I will continue to use it with my
students to show the connections and why they
need a good education.
I plan to continue to use SD MyLife in my classroom, and to have my students create
presentations on their findings.
I'd like to work with the teachers in my school who
are responsible for this getting done and see what
parts I could fit in my class. I definitely want to explore the resume part that Kelli talked
of.
Use this to help maintain real world connections to my
classroom to gain relevance to everything I teach.
try to use Mylife but maybe not with every unit. our high school has a lot of exposure
to it
I will add the resume writing portion in a more in-depth
way.
Work along side our councelor using SD MyLife
with my advisory
YES! I will use this in a mini research project
This is a site that I am very excited about and will
continue to use as it works so well with my subject matter.
I plan to continue to use in my classroom and create
video’s on findings.Use this tool with our
advisor/advisee program
Now that we have a plan to implement, I’m excited
to use it more.
This site has so many features that I haven’t even explored…I plan on doing
more with it next year.
I am going to continue to look at cost of schools and different careers especially
during advisory.Probably not. not unless forced.
95% of participating teachers will recognize the effectiveness of Stiggins’ instructional strategies in increasing student engagement as measured by pre and post perception survey.
After training…I will continue…
Learning Targets Feedback Student Self-Assessment
Technology Integration
I want to match learning targets and display to
students with each lesson. Make them a regular part at the beginning of each class
period. I think these are one of the most important skills I learned through this
project.
Most of the time students aren't interested in this. once the grade is in they don't care. I think I will
offer to save their stuff and they have a week after it's in the grade book to come look if they are interested, but I am not going to waste
class time pass out evaluations of work they
don't care about.
I really liked how the senior project worked. I want to incorporate more of this
idea of individualizing student needs to every class. I need to explore places where this fits.
Thinking about this today, I should have students do
more to think back on what they learned and share that in class discussion. This is definitely an area I could
improve in.
Introduce more students to Prezi so I never have to
watch a powerpt again! I also want to explore more
of the options over the summer and do little things like I did this year to show
students more options. I'm really interested in Glogster.
Also, I had one student work with the new outlining
and notes elements available on easybib and I want to learn that to show
students a place to use that. Cool Tools for School is my
best friend!

Teacher Reflection ExampleDescribe the new changes you have made in your classroom in regards to the strategies we've
been discussing and unit development/implementation. Provide your cohort members with examples of your successes.
Subject: Starting My Project Author: MFI have started my project with my students since we last met. They are making video diaries for
every section in an unit to show their understanding and application of trigonometric concepts. They will be graded with a rubric that they have been given before the due date, so they know what is expected. They are also using these rubrics to self-assess.
The videos I have received so far have been awesome. They have taken this project by the horns with little help from me. The students seem self-motivated and proud of their videos. I can't wait to share the ending results with you.
– That is great to hear M, especially that the students were proud of the work they were doing.
– To see the students being self-motivated is so rewarding as a teacher. I look forward to seeing some of your students work.
– Sort of reminds me of a project that I do in U.S. History class where I require the students to present a newscast of the Civil War. Overall I have seen a lot of success and enthusiasm when we are in this particular unit. They love watching it back in class.

Before…
I used "I CAN" statements at the beginning of each lesson to show our
learning target.
I never used student work, but on the board I would say
"don't do this, don't do that".
I usually did this on their papers. I wrote
little notes with suggestions or
comments.
I never did this. I was the main
assessor.
The only self-reflection the
students got was when I handed the
paper back and they saw what they got
for a grade.
I never heard of this or used this.
graphing calculators were the technology
we used.
I got to observe a teacher because we shared a
same room, but nothing real formal.
During…
I changed my "I CAN" statements to
"We are learning to...". I thought this
wasn't as intimidating and it
still gave a clear learning target at the
beginning of the lesson.
I try to make sure I point out common
errors students make throughout the
lesson. This helps me try to prevent
the problem before it occurs. I have the students take notes, so they see what is
strong work.
I offer time for the students to ask
questions on any concept they are
confused on.
I started letting the students correct
their own papers the day after the
assignment is given to them. They take this opportunity to
go through their problems and see
what mistakes they made and FIX them. This not only helps them on their daily work, but also on
their final assessments.
I believe students do this when they are
correcting their papers. It gives
them an opportunity to learn from their
mistakes and not do them again.
I gave my students some class time to work on SDMyLife.
It gave them a chance to find
careers that they were interested in and to see if they
had the skills to be successful at them.
I have used animoto, perzi, doodle,
wikispaces, texting, twitter, and so much
more!
I have had the opportunity to talk with
other teachers in my content area and share
ideas!
After…
I am going to still use the "We are learning
to.." statements because they give us
a great starting/ending
point.
I am going to try to keep point out this as I teach, but I am
also going to try and collect actual
student work to show.
This is one area I could definitely
improve on. I am going to make a
point to offer this regularly face to
face.
I love the idea of having the students correct and fix their
papers. I will continued doing this
because it offers immediate feedback
and a second chance.
I am going to try to do more of this....not just the time where they correct their
own papers. Maybe have them write
paragraphs at the bottom of the math
papers for a reflection.
I believe we should offer this as a class in itself. What a great
thing!
I am definitely going to keep up with all the cool ways to
show their learning. I love how easy it is to use some of the
programs.
K is a great person to go to. I am going to keep on
top of her about using technology and hope she
does the same for me.

Success
• Seeing students take control of learning and the excitement and pride they showed in their work.
• Watching teachers grow and cheer each other on.
• Watching RELATIONSHIPS grow.• Majority of participants have a plan to
continue growing.
Challenge
• Relationships take time to develop.• Overcome the checklist… The R’s of
Engagement is about growth…what am I going to do next?
• “Project” definitions…
Lessons Learned
• KISS• It’s all about relationships!• Complete “project” before the end of May.• Including a counselor on the team is a huge
benefit when incorporating SDMyLife.---To continue with these participants…some are
ready to create pre-post project assessments.
Products
• Units including rubrics, exit cards, reflection / self-assessment templates
• Student samples– Videos, prezi’s, scrapbooks• Human Trafficing
Advice
• KISS• Allow enough time for practice and self-
reflection along the way.• Teacher timelines…know your audience. – This project could have started /finished earlier in
the year…this spring was not ideal for participants at the high school level.
