• King David Kalakaua slept in a queen-sized bed.
• The King’s bedroom doubled as his office, with staff reporting for work there.
• The King, a world traveler, took a page from Napoleon and crowned himself. (He picked up elegant his-and-hers crowns at a discount in Europe.)
• At formal dinners, the King did not sit at the head of the table. Instead, his larger royal dining chair was placed on a long side of the table, where he could interact with more people.
hese are some of the nuggets our staff and college-student trainees picked up during a visit to Iolani Palace. We all went to the palace to learn its history and understand its protocol, as part of preparations for the unprecedented taping of a PBS Hawaii television musical special there.
Our Na Mele program, as you’ll see elsewhere in this magazine, celebrates the music composed by four alii siblings, including King Kalakaua.
Docent Maggie Keener ushered us into rooms where King Kalakaua and his succes-sor, Queen Liliuokalani, lived and worked and gathered with friends and family and dignitaries. Aunty Maggie, a strikingly attractive kupuna, dearly loves the palace and is fiercely protective of it. She made sure we all wore booties over our footwear to prevent scuffing the rich wooden floors and she scolded anybody who ventured off the main path of the tour. And she brought history alive, conjuring up the daily life of Hawaiian rulers.
The royals looked out from age-darkened portraits in the grand entry hall. The hall centerpiece is a beautiful koa staircase, said to be the largest koa structure in the world.
In the dining room, Aunty Maggie asked us: “What was their favorite dessert?” We were stumped. “Chantilly cake?” “Red velvet cake?” “Kulolo?” came the hesitant responses.
No, she said – it was strawberries and ice cream.
We looked at each other. Back in those days, where’d they get the ice from which to make ice cream?

Our guide fully expected the surprise on our faces. “They would order a huge chunk of ice from Alaska and bring it here on a ship, wrapped in burlap,” she explained. And then, the royals’ retainers worked furiously to make treats with the ice before it melted.
There was a hush as we entered the bedroom where Queen Liliuokalani was impris-oned, convicted of having knowledge of a royalist plot, after U.S. interests ended the Hawaiian monarchy. I recalled that in the Queen’s book, she described the bed-room as airy. It was. We also felt the weight of a painful past and the sadness that still resides there.
I remember visiting the palace as a kid on a school excursion. So did others in the group. We wondered how many children today receive this exposure to the historic site, with the budget cuts to education.
Our staff thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Iolani Palace and we hope that if you haven’t done so lately, you’ll visit and take a fascinat-ing trip back in time.
On behalf of the PBS Hawaii Board and staff, I’d like to thank Iolani Palace Executive Director Kippen de Alba Chu and his team for allowing us to bring people and cameras into the palace for the Na Mele taping. We operated, with all respect, under strict rules to cause no damage to the building or its priceless treasures. Not only did our crew wear booties, our tripods wore booties, among many protective measures. Robert Pennybacker, PBS Hawaii VP of Creative Services, oversaw the television production. Community Partner Hawaiian Airlines generously provided production funding.
We invite you to enjoy this special edition of Na Mele from Iolani Palace, at 7:30 pm Monday, June 11. You’ll see and hear top Hawaii musical artists performing the music of the four royal siblings known as Na Lani Eha, in the palace where some of the music was born. Singers, musicians and our television team were profoundly moved by the extraordi-nary setting and the songs. I believe PBS Hawaii viewers will be moved as well.

The Royal Sounds of Music
Music from Hawaii’s monarchy eracomes to life in Na Mele: Na Lani Eha from Iolani Palace Presented by Hawaiian Airlines. This music special premieres June 11, Kamehameha Day, as a live pledge program.
oyal siblings King Kalakaua,
Queen Liliuokalani, Princess Likelike and Prince
Leleiohoku – collectively known as Na Lani Eha (The Royal Four) – composed the beloved music featured in the special. “Music has always been an integral part of Hawaiian culture, and having the compositions of Na Lani Eha performed inside Iolani Palace by contemporary artists provides a continuum from the past to the present,” said palace executive director Kippen de Alba Chu. Taped musical performances inside Iolani Palace are rare. Allowing PBS Hawaii to stage its production complemented the palace’s mission to create a living restoration of the royal residence of the Hawaiian monarchy.
Working closely with the staff at Iolani Palace, PBS Hawaii’s crew took painstaking care to ensure the production would not harm the palace and its artifacts. Like all palace visitors, musicians and crew wore booties over their shoes to preserve the floors and kept food and drink outside. Before entering the palace, station props and equipment were fumigated or wiped down for insects and for-eign debris. In consideration of the effects of harsh lighting on antique fabric and paper, LED lights were used instead. And only gloved pal-ace staff were authorized to move artifacts and furniture. “We are all about preservation,” said Heather Diamond, palace curator. “We’re trying to arrest any of the degeneration that normally happens over time due to humidity, insects, mold and all those things, so that the palace will be around for the next 300 years.”
Through the songs composed by the royal siblings, stories from Hawaii’s monarchs also live on. “[They’ve left] such a legacy of music that’s still performed all the time on the islands,” said guitarist Jeff Peterson. Vocalist/ukulele player David Kamakahi likened the songs to journal entries about people the royal four observed, met or knew. “What was special about the Hawaiian monarchy was that they really wanted to stay connected to their people because they loved them so much,” he said. For many of the musicians in this latest production, the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform inside the palace was a tremendous honor. Robert Cazimero said he was humbled and awed as he looked up at King Kalakaua’s portrait dur-ing his performance of “Kalakaua.” “I would hope that every Hawaiian in the world would want

to someday be in the presence of our king,” Robert Cazimero said. “To know that I had that oppor-tunity, in a way, with his portrait right there in front of me, I’m kind of flying high right now.” To Rev. Dennis Kamakahi, who grew up on and near the palace grounds, the experience was like a homecoming. “Coming back as a musician and singing the songs of Liliuokalani and Na Lani Eha, in the place where they would come to meet, you can feel the spirits. They’re there.”

hrough our programming, PBS Hawaii brings the world to Hawaii and Hawaii
to the world. It’s no surprise then that one of our strongest community partners is an organization with a similar mission – Hawaiian Airlines.
For over five years, Hawaiian Air-lines has been the production title sponsor for Na Mele specials such as the upcoming concert recorded at Iolani Palace. Hawaiian Airlines’ gen-erous support allows PBS Hawaii to create exceptional programs like this once-in-a-lifetime production. Last year, Hawaiian Airlines sponsored a Na Mele that featured Hawaii’s “Golden Voice,” Emma Veary, in a return concert at the Halekulani. Hawaiian Airlines underwrites other PBS Hawaii programs as well, such as Nature and Masterpiece.
PBS Hawaii is just one of the ways Hawaiian Airlines supports the com-munity, according to Ann Botticelli, senior vice president for corporate communications and public affairs.
“Giving back is part of the culture at Hawaiian Airlines,” says Botticelli. Indeed, in 2011, the company gave over half a million dollars in grants to the community. “The lion’s share of our giving goes to education, because we see Hawaii’s children as
our future work force. Many of them will grow up and work for Ha-waiian Airlines – as a mechanic, as a pilot, or as the CEO. We therefore want to support those programs that give our children the best possible education.”
It’s one of the reasons that Hawai-ian Airlines is the official airline for HIKI N -O. “HIKI N -O is clearly a strong educational program. It gives students the opportunity to have a voice in their community, and to get engaged in their community,” she added. The airline also gives gener-ously to cultural projects.
“As a kamaaina company, we have a vested interest in the Hawaiian culture. What distinguishes us from our competitors is that we are from Hawaii. So we support projects that perpetuate the culture, including the annual Merrie Monarch Festival and, of course, PBS Hawaii’s Na Mele.”
“Hawaiian Airlines also encourages its 4,300 employees (3,800 in Ha-waii) to give back and get involved,” says Botticelli. “This past year, our employees, Team Kokua, raised $70,000 for the American Diabetes Association, which Hawaiian Airlines then matched with an additional $70,000.”
Mahalo, Hawaiian Airlines, for your community-minded spirit! You are one of the reasons we are lucky we live Hawaii!

A HIKI N -O student was so inspired by her participation in the student news network that she’s heading off to college next fall to major in broadcast journalism. Amber Thomsen from Moanalua High School was part of the HIKI N -O media-credentialed news team that covered President Barack Obama’s news conference last fall at APEC. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with international and national network news crews proved to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Amber applied and was accepted for admission to the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. Congratulations, Amber, and to all our high school graduates who participated in HIKI N -O.

NOVA’s cameras were there through the difficult years of classes and clinical training, internship and residency, marriage and divorce — documenting the trials and tribulations as these individuals struggled to become doctors and to balance time at work and at home.

It illuminates the profound personal and community issues raised by the AIDS epidemic as well as the broad political and social upheavals it unleashed. It offers a cathartic validation for the generation that suffered through, and responded to, the onset of AIDS while opening a window of understanding to those who have only the vaguest notions of what transpired in those years.

QUEEN VICTORIA’S EMPIRE 4-Part SeriesTuesday, June 19 and 26 | 8 PM
Engines of Change Beginning with the birth of Queen Victoria, this episode explores the changes brought to Britain by the industrial revolution. By the 1840s, urban migration has created overcrowding and extremes in pollution and poverty. However, British subjects remain loyal to their queen.
Passage to India In the 1850s, one half of the world’s industrial goods are made in Britain, and steamships take British exports and families to far corners of the globe. The episode also reveals the devastating effects of the Crimean War, the first major war of Vic-toria’s reign, and the death of Prince Albert.
The Moral Crusade By 1861, Britain is the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth. However, the death of Prince Albert weakens Victoria, and many of his political ideals fade from importance. David Living-stone’s explorations of the African interior captivate the British public.
The Scramble for Africa The Suez Canal is threatened by a holy war in the Sudan, and General Charles Gordon, killed by the rebels, becomes an “imperial martyr.” Cecil Rhodes prospects diamond deposits in southern Africa and asserts British control in the region. However, as Victoria celebrates her Diamond Jubilee, the empire is on the verge of its darkest hours.

P.O.V. Granito: How to Nail a DictatorThursday, June 28 | 10 PM
In a stunning milestone for justice in Central America, a Guatemalan court recently charged former dictator Efraín Rios Montt with genocide for his brutal war against the country’s Mayan people in the 1980s. Pamela Yates’ 1983 documentary, When the Mountains Tremble, provided key evidence for bringing the indictment. Filmmakers Peter Kinoy, Pamela Yates and Paco de Onis present an extraordinary story of how a film, aiding a new generation of human rights activists, became a granito — a tiny grain of sand — that helped tip the scales of justice. Pictured: The Caba family in front of their home in Ixil highlands of Guatemala. The army massacred 95 people in their village in 1982 during the genocide.
