Last.year.we.celebrated.the.80th.anniversary.of.the.Society,.and.this.year.we.are.celebrating.the.80th.anniversary.of.Canadian Geographic,.the.Society’s.magazine ..The.Society.can.be.justifiably.proud.of.its.longevity ..It.is.an.amazing.achievement.in.view.of.the.Society’s.ups.and.downs.during.its.80-year.history ..And.even.today,.we.still.face.challenges .
The.global.economic.recession.continues.to.impact.the.Society ..Magazine.advertising.revenue.continued.to.decline.in.2009-10,.but.the.Society.has.been.able.to.meet.the.challenge.with.a.new.line.of.business,.custom.publishing ..This.initiative.was.launched.early.in.2009.after.the.economic.collapse.and.has.seen.tremendous.growth.in.the.2009-10.fiscal.year ...
This.year.the.Society.has.been.successful.in.seeking.out.more.than.a.dozen.new.custom.publishing.projects,.working.with.a.variety.of.supporters:.government.departments.such.as.Canadian.Heritage.and.Indian.and.Northern.Affairs,.government.agencies.such.as.Parks.Canada,.foundations.such.as.the.RBC.Foundation.and.corporate.partners.such.as.3M.Canada ..A.complete.list.of.the.projects.and.components.may.be.found.in.the.new.Custom.Publishing.section.of.the.Annual.Report .
Custom.publishing.involves.both.the.Society.and.CGE ..We.offer.unparalleled.public.and.educational.outreach.through.Canadian Geographic magazine.and.the.Society’s.Canadian.Council.for.Geographic.Education ..We.bring.top-notch.editorial,.photographic.and.cartographic.skills.together.with.top-quality.educational.resources,.a.unique.combination.sought.after.by.many.of.our.partners ..Custom.publishing.has.also.enabled.the.Society.to.resume.publishing.Géographica.on.an.ad-hoc.basis .
On.the.fundraising.front,.the.Society.is.continuing.its.emphasis.on.member.fundraising.in.order.to.expand.its.educational.and.outreach.programs ..Program.funding.also.comes.from.other.sources,.such.as.the.Society’s.joint.Endowment.Fund.with.the.National.Geographic.Society,.which.supports.the.Canadian.Council.for.Geographic.Education ..This.year,.the.Research.Grants.program.was.supported.by.the.EJLB.Foundation.of.Montréal ..The.Expeditions.program.was.generously.supported.by.individual.donors.and.a.$25,000.grant.from.the.RBC.Foundation.for.the.2010.Expedition.of.the.Year ..The.Ottawa.Speakers.Series.took.place.with.the.support.of.the.speaker,.the.Society’s.2009.Gold.Medalist.Wade.Davis .
This.year.marks.the.last.year.of.my.Presidency ..Over.my.six-year.term,.I.have.witnessed.the.dedication.and.energy.that.the.Society.can.bring.to.bear.to.successfully.face.new.challenges ..I’ve.been.privileged.to.be.part.of.the.Society’s.double.80th.anniversaries.in.2009.and.2010,.and.I.am.certain.that.the.Society.will.continue.to.fulfill.its.mandate.“to.make.Canada.better.known.to.Canadians.and.to.the.world”.for.another.80.years .

AwardsMassey MedalInstituted.in.1959.by.Canada’s.first.native-born.Governor.General,.the.Right.Honourable.Vincent.Massey,.and.the.Massey.Foundation,.this.award.honours.outstanding.personal.achievement.in.the.exploration,.development.or.description.of.the.geography.of.Canada .
The.recipient.of.the.Massey.Medal.for.2010.is.Raymond.Price,.professor.emeritus.of.geology.at.Queen’s.University.in.Kingston,.for.his.groundbreaking.research.on.the.evolution.of.Canada’s.Rocky.Mountains ...He.was.also.instrumental.in.Lithoprobe,.which.explored.the.composition.of.the.North.American.continent,.and.the.Ocean.Drilling.Program,.which.studied.the.sea.floor,.still.an.unknown.frontier .
Gold MedalThe.Society’s.Gold.Medal.was.created.in.1972.and.is.awarded.on.an.irregular.basis.to.recognize.a.particular.achievement.by.one.or.more.people.in.the.field.of.geography.or.for.a.significant.national..or.international.event .
The.Board.of.Governors.is.pleased.to.announce.that.two.Gold.Medals.will.be.awarded.in.2010 ..One.will.be.awarded.to.Alex.Trebek.for.his.unique.contribution.to.geographic.education,.and.the.other.to.the.Canadian.National.Committee.for.the.2007-2008.International.Polar.Year,.for.the.internationally.significant.role.that.Canada.played.during.IPY.2007-2008 .
Camsell MedalNamed.in.honour.of.the.Society’s.founder,.Charles.Camsell,.this.medal.was.established.in.1992.to.recognize.individuals.who.have.given.outstanding.service.to.the.Society ..At.the.College.of.Fellows.Dinner.in.November.2009,.Camsell.Medals.were.presented.to.Edward.Johnson.and.James.Raffan .
Edward.Johnson.has.played.a.pivotal.role.in.the.RCGS.for.17.years ..His.considerable.financial.expertise,.business.acumen.and.legal.knowledge.have.proved.invaluable.to.the.Society.during.difficult.times ..
He.has.served.on.as.many.as.seven.committees.at.one.time.and.has.remained.committed.to.the.Society’s.health.and.well.being ..Often.behind.the.scenes.and.out.of.the.limelight,.he.has.nevertheless.made.a.unique.and.invaluable.contribution.to.the.Society .
James.Raffan.has.been.a.stalwart.volunteer.for.the.RCGS.since.1994.when.he.joined.the.Lectures.Committee.where,.15.years.later,.he.continues.to.serve.with.unbounded.enthusiasm ..During..his.tenure,.he.has.brought.fresh,.innovative.ideas.regarding.how.best.to.deliver.this.outreach.program .
As.a.popular.speaker.and.best-selling.author,.James.continues.to.serve.as.an.ambassador.for.the.Society,.its.publications,.its.programs.and.its.mandate .
The.2010.Camsell.Medals.will.be.awarded.at.the.annual.general.meeting.of.the.College.of.Fellows.on..November.4,.2010 .

ExpeditionsThe.Expeditions.program.was.launched.in.1995.to.encourage.geographic.expeditions.that.would.include.some.measure.of.accomplishment,.expand.geographic.knowledge.and.support.the.Society’s.mandate ..
During.the.2009-10.fiscal.year,.the.Expeditions.Committee.considered.eight.applications.for.grants,.the.highest.number.ever.for.this.program ..With.funding.of.only.$7,500,.the.Committee.was.able.to.support.John.Dunn’s.two-person.expedition.to.Ellesmere.Island.for.$5,000,.and.Laco.Kovac’s.two-person.canoeing.expedition.on.the.Vachon.River.to.the.Pingualuit.Crater.in.Ungava.for.$2,500 ..
The.RBC.Foundation.agreed.to.sponsor.the.“Expedition.of.the.Year”.for.$25,000.for.the.RCGS.Expedition.Series.in.2010.and.2011 ..The.2010.Expedition.of.the.Year.was.a.scientific.expedition.led.by.Dr ..Antoni.Lewkowicz.of.the.University.of.Ottawa.on.permafrost.and.climate.change.in.the.Yukon .
Part.of.the.new.Expeditions.Series.program.is.an.Explorers.Dinner.in.Toronto.in.the.spring.of.2011,.which.will.see.the.Expedition.leaders.return.their.RCGS.expedition.flags .
Geographic EducationCanadian Council for Geographic Education (CCGE)At.June.30,.2010,.membership.in.the.CCGE.stood.at.slightly.over.3,500.teachers ..Members.received.a.teaching.resource.package.in.the.fall.of.2009 ..GeoSources,.the.CCGE.e-newsletter,.is.sent.to.members.three.times.during.the.school.year .
Great Canadian Geography ChallengeThe.16th.year.of.the.Geography.Challenge.saw.524.schools.and.102,000.students.participate ..The.National.Final.was.held.online.on.the.Geography.Challenge.web.site.on.May.20,.2010.with.35.students.competing.from.all.across.Canada ..Alejandro.Torres-Lopez,.a.fifteen-year-old.from.North.Vancouver,.came.in.first.and.fourteen-year-old.Yujia.Zhu.from.Montreal,.came.second ..Yujia.is.the.first.girl.to.ever.place.amongst.the.top.three.National.Finalists ..Alexander.Cohen.from.Ottawa.took.third.place ..The.top.three.students.won.HSBC.Bank.Canada.scholarships.of.$3,000,.$2,000.and.$1,000.respectively .
CCGE ExecutiveBC/Yukon.representative.Andrew.Young.completed.his.six-year.term.in.June.2010 ..Matteo.Babini.of.Surrey.has.been.acclaimed.as.the.new.BC/YT.representative ..
Alberta/Northwest.Territories.representative.Don.McLaughlin.completed.his.six-year.term ..Geoff.Buerger.of.Hay.River,.NWT.has.been.acclaimed.as.the.new.representative .
A.new.representative.for.the.Ontario.region.was.appointed.to.the.CCGE.Executive.in.June.2010 ...Jane.Kerr-Wilson.from.Hamilton,.Ontario.will.replace.Ethel.Johnston.who.left.on.sabbatical ..
An.election.is.underway.for.the.Manitoba/Saskatchewan/Nunavut.representative.because.the.incumbent,.Connie.Wyatt-Anderson,.is.taking.on.the.Chair.of.the.Canadian.Council.for.Geographic.Education.in.November.2010,.when.the.current.Chair.Beth.Dye’s.six-year.term.is.complete .

CCGE Lesson PlansDuring.the.2009-10.fiscal.year,.teacher-members.of.the.CCGE.created.26.lesson.plans.on.the.subject.of.Wind.Energy,.13.lesson.plans.about.the.Saint.Lawrence.Seaway,.13.lesson.plans.about.the.Canadian.Navy.and.13.lesson.plans.about.the.impact.of.climate.change.in.Canada ..The.lesson.plan.projects.comprise.a.minimum.of.13.bilingual.plans,.one.for.each.provincial.and.territorial.curriculum ..The.lesson.plans.are.part.of.the.Society’s.custom.publishing.initiatives ..All.CCGE.lesson.plans.are.posted.in.the.Learning.Centre.of.the.Canadian.Atlas.Online.and.are.available.free.of.charge.to.anyone.who.wishes.to.access.them ..Because.the.CCGE.lesson.plans.are.curriculum-linked.and.classroom-ready,.they.are.very.popular.with.teachers.looking.for.good-quality.geographic.resource.materials.about.Canada .
CCGE Critical Thinking ProjectThis.school.year.the.CCGE.has.been.working.on.a.companion.to.the.popular.“Teaching.about.Geographical.Thinking”.manual.jointly.published.in.the.fall.of.2008.by.the.CCGE.and.The.Critical.Thinking.Consortium,.based.in.Vancouver ..A.companion.manual.“Exemplars.in.Geographical.Thinking”.will.contain.many.more.classroom-ready.examples.of.how.critical.thinking.can.be.applied.to.the.geography.curricula.across.Canada ..
In.support.of.this.initiative,.the.CCGE.funded.a.Teacher.Institute.held.at.the.Ontario.Institute.for.Studies.in.Education.(OISE).in.Toronto.to.provide.‘critical.thinking’.training.to.a.group.of.Ontario.teachers ..Many.of.these.teachers.are.in.turn.writing.geographical.exemplars.to.be.included.in.the.new.manual,.which.is.due.to.be.published.in.the.fall.of.2010 .
Canadian Geographic Literacy AwardThe.CCGE.established.the.Geographic.Literacy.Award.in.2000.to.honour.and.recognize.individual.effort.in.the.development,.enhancement.and/or.promotion.of.geographic.literacy.in.Canadian.education ..The.recipient.of.the.2009.Geographic.Literacy.Award.was.Eric.Kramers.of.Ottawa,.a.cartographer.with.The.Atlas.of.Canada ..Eric.has.been.instrumental.in.developing.The.Atlas.of.Canada’s.national.educational.outreach.program.and.has.worked.with.many.geography.teachers.across.Canada.to.promote.the.use.of.digital.mapping.and.online.resources.in.the.study.of.Canada’s.diverse.geography .
Speaker SeriesThe.goal.of.the.Speaker.Series.program.is.to.provide.a.timely.and.interesting.roster.of.public.speakers ..In.this.fiscal.year,.the.program.was.limited.to.the.Ottawa.Speakers.Series.held.in.April ..This.year,.the.Spring.Series.speaker.graciously.waived.the.speaker.honorarium,.which.enabled.the.Society.to.proceed.on.a.break-even.basis.through.ticket.sales ..
2010 Spring Speaker SeriesThe.Society’s.2010.Spring.Speaker.Series.featured.Wade.Davis,.internationally.renowned.cultural.anthropologist.and.recipient.of.the.Society’s.Gold.Medal.for.2009 ..Wade.Davis.captivated.the.audience.with.his.photographs.and.stories.about.the.world’s.ancient.cultures,.which.are.becoming.increasingly.endangered ..The.one-night.event.took.place.on.April.28,.2010.at.Centrepointe.Theatre.in.Ottawa ...Wade.stayed.for.over.an.hour.after.the.event.to.speak.to.guests.and.to.autograph.copies.of.his..book.The Wayfinders ..Attendance.was.the.highest.in.recent.years.and.the.audience.response.was.overwhelmingly.enthusiastic .

Research GrantsThe.Research.Grants.Committee.supports.geographical.research.undertaken.by.university.students.and.independent.researchers ..Thanks.to.support.from.the.EJLB.Foundation.in.Montréal,.the.Committee.was.able.to.offer.$20,000.in.grants.this.year .
Regular GrantsA.total.of.10.applications.were.received.in.the.past.fiscal.year.(undergraduate.students.and.independent.researchers) ..Of.these,.six.were.successful.in.receiving.funding.ranging.from.$1,100.to.$2,000 ..The.research.projects.are:.Duration of active-layer freeze-back, Illisarvik, NWT; High-definition geomorphological mapping of the Chic-Chocs mountain summits affected by permafrost, southern Québec; An investigation into the proposed theory of Glacial Lake Drumheller and associated implications for a subglacial lake model; What is the level of methylmercury in plants that form the diet of Porcupine caribou?; Pipeline politics: northern gateway and the contested landscape of environmental assessment; Runoff prediction and permafrost: Distribution and degradation in the Hay River basin or Canada’s Northwest Territories.
Maxwell Studentship in Human GeographyThis.studentship.was.created.in.1996.and.named.for.James.W ..Maxwell,.former.Executive.Director.of.the.RCGS ..The.$5,000.award.is.granted.to.a.master’s.student.conducting.research.on.an.aspect.of.Canadian.human.geography ..
The.Human.Geography.Studentship.sub-committee.reviewed.a.record.number.of.15.applications,.and.the.$5,000.studentship.for.2010.was.awarded.to.University.of.Toronto.master’s.student.Laura.Senese.who.will.be.studying.First Nations mobility in Canada: Examining the health impacts of frequent movement between reserves and cities.
RCGS Studentship in Northern GeographyThe.RCGS.Studentship.in.Northern.Geography.sub-committee.reviewed.11.applications,.and.the.$5,000.studentship.in.Northern.Geography.for.2010.was.awarded.to.University.of.Northern.British.Columbia.student.Jocelyn.Joe-Stack.who.will.be.studying.Methylmercury.and sulfur-reducing bacteria in sub-arctic lake sediments .
James W. Bourque Studentship in Northern Geography The.$5,000.Bourque.Studentship.in.Northern.Geography.was.not.awarded.in.2010 .

International Polar Year Funded.by.the.Federal.Program.Office.for.International.Polar.Year,.the.January/February.2010.issue.of.Canadian Geographic.was.devoted.to.Northern.science ..A.companion.issue.of.Géographica.also.featured.IPY.research ..A.thematic.module.on.IPY.was.added.to.the.Canadian.Atlas.Online ..An.interactive.online.map.was.developed.to.demonstrate.all.50.IPY.research.projects.supported.by.Canada ..Fact.sheets.and.bookmarks.were.also.produced.and.distributed.to.teachers.of.the.Canadian.Council.for.Geographic.Education.in.November.2009 .
Parks CanadaSupported.by.Parks.Canada,.a.special.issue.of.Canadian Geographic Travel was.issued.in.March.2010.that.highlighted.national.parks.and.historic.sites.within.driving.distance.of.urban.areas.to.encourage.visitation ..A.companion.issue.of.Géographica was.also.published ..In.addition,.the.Heritage.Treasures.of.Parks.Canada.photo.contest.was.launched.in.the.March.issue .

Similar.to.most.other.media.organizations,.CGE.has.been.severely.affected.by.deteriorating.print.and.online.advertising.revenues.caused.by.the.world-wide.recession ..The.impact.of.the.resulting.drop.in.revenues.was.largely.offset.by.a.number.of.custom.publishing.projects.with.outside.partners.such.as..Parks.Canada,.the.Canadian.Navy.and.the.Canadian.International.Polar.Year.program .
The.success.achieved.in.developing.custom.publishing.projects.helped.offset.declining.revenues.while.supporting.the.Society’s.mission.of.“making.Canada.better.known.to.Canadians”.and,.perhaps.more.importantly,.also.pointed.to.a.new.and.sustainable.revenue.source.for.CGE .
Not.only.did.CGE.aggressively.pursue.new.revenue.opportunities,.it.also.implemented.extensive.cost.control.initiatives.and.maintained.salary.restrictions.and.the.suspension.of.RRSP.contributions.throughout.the.year.with.the.result.that.year-over-year.expenses.were.nearly.half.a.million.dollars.lower.than.in.the.previous.fiscal.year .
In.June.2010,.the.RBC.Foundation,.under.its.RBC.Blue.Water.Project,.awarded.major.funding.to.the.Society.to.support.the.development.of.“citizens.and.students.watershed.protection.guides” ..This.significant.project.includes.dedicated.issues.of.Canadian Geographic.and.Géographica.that.will.be.published.in.June.2011,.as.well.as.companion.printed.and.web-based.interactive.maps,.a.thematic.module.on.the.Canadian.Atlas.Online,.and.supporting.lesson.plans.and.activity.guides .
The.Publications.Assistance.Program.(PAP),.that.pre-dated.Confederation.and.subsidized.the.high.cost.of.mailing.magazines.to.subscribers,.as.well.as.the.Canadian.Magazine.Fund,.that.supported.the.creation.of.Canadian.content,.were.both.eliminated.in.March.2010.and.replaced.with.the.Canadian.Periodical.Fund ..Funding.for.this.new.program.has.been.secured.for.three.years,.but.the.amount.to.be.paid.out.to.magazine.publishers.was.only.specified.for.the.first.year .
Canadian Geographic MagazineSix.issues.of.Canadian Geographic,.four.of.Canadian Geographic Travel.and.two.of.Géographica,.along.with.three.two-sided.poster.maps,.were.published.during.the.year,.making.it.one.of.the.most.productive.years.on.record.for.CGE.staff.in.all.departments .
The.spring.2010.PMB.report.ranked.Canadian Geographic.as.the.fourth.most-widely.read.magazine.in.the.country.with.a.readership.of.over.3 .4.million ..Chatelaine.and.Canadian Living.remain.its.perennial.rivals.for.the.second.and.third.spots,.with.Reader’s Digest.continuing.in.the.top.spot .
Impressively,.the.December.2009.issue.of.the.magazine,.featuring.Delinda.the.wolf.on.the.cover,.won.the.2010.ACE.Award.for.excellence.in.circulation.marketing ..The.issue.also.established.a.new.all-time.newsstand.sales.record.with.29,100.copies.sold .
The.January/February.2010.issue.focused.on.the.legacy.of.the.International.Polar.Year ..It.was.entirely.dedicated.to.polar.research.and.was.accompanied.by.a.matching.issue.of.Géographica ..This.significant.undertaking,.which.included.a.web-based.interactive.map.showing.all.research.projects.undertaken.in.the.Arctic.during.IPY,.was.supported.by.the.Canadian.International.Polar.Year.program .
The.March.issue.of.Canadian Geographic Travel,.which.presented.a.number.of.national.parks.located.near.major.urban.centers,.also.had.a.companion.issue.of.Géographica.which.was.made.possible.with.support.from.Parks.Canada .

Expenses.totaled.$2,048,589.and.included.$1,189,441.for.Custom.Publishing.projects.executed.by.Canadian.Geographic.Enterprises,.$158,299.for.Society.programs,.$223,184.for.fundraising.expense..and.$214,293.for.administration ...
