National Night Out B a r k e r R a n c h a n d o t h e r neighborhoods throughout Austin are coming together to participate in National Night Out 2005. Join us and thousands of communities nationwide on Tuesday, August 2, 2005, to participate in the 22nd Annual ‘National Night Out’. APD officers, firefighters and City Council Members will attend neighborhood parties throughout Austin and participate in a neighborhood walk.

‘National Night Out’ is an opportunity to: • Heighten awareness of drug and crime prevention efforts • Generate support and participation in crime prevention efforts • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community

relations • Send a message to criminals to let them know that neighborhoods

are organized and fighting back For the past 10 years, Texas had led the nation in citizen and police involvement. Your participation in the Austin area ‘National Night Out’ will show our neighborhood strength, increase the police officer/citizen bond and make our community a safer place to live. Barker Ranch has already officially registered to participate in National Night Out events so make plans to join your fellow Ranch Hands during a night out! Here are some ways your block can participate right here in Barker Ranch:

• Get all of your neighbors to turn on their porch lights.• Meet your neighbors by attending a block party or hosting a

barbecue.• Encourage your kids to get involved. Ask them to make posters

and yard signs for the event.• Invite local law enforcement to talk about crime prevention.

School’s Ahead – Slow Down Our Austin schools open on Tuesday, August 16. Some of our children walk or ride their bikes to school. So let’s slow down a little when driving through the Barker Ranch neighborhood. Reducing your speed, and the volume on your radio, could save a life. We’re closer than ever to a complete “sell-out” here at Barker Ranch. I understand that the 2 homebuilders have only 4 more houses left to sell. This is quite an accomplishment. It seems like only yesterday that my family moved into a mostly vacant field. Now there are homes everywhere and we’re glad you made it to Barker Ranch! The Barker Ranch HOA Board has been steadily at work since elected back in January. So far we’ve lowered the maintenance expenditures and our common area taxes by almost 99%! We’re currently perusing the 2006 budget and our projects indicate that we will not have to raise dues to meet expenses. None of your Board members ever studied ranch management in college, but we’re doing pretty good job at it. I hope you agree. Sincerely,Matt Bowers

The Barker Ranch Retention Ponds are on the Mend!

You may have noticed that the city of Austin has been pumping our retention pond daily. They have been trying to relieve the water so that they can begin repairs on the failing mechanisms within the floor of the ponds. Once the land is dry enough, they will complete their work in a timely manner. Of course, the rain we received on July 14 will undoubtedly slow the progress down too. But surely, some of you liked the rain though!

Texas Shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 5, 6, and 7th - the state’s sixth annual tax holiday. The law exempts most clothing and footwear priced under $100 from sales and use taxes which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. This year’s sales tax holiday for clothing and footwear begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 5, and ends at midnight on Sunday, August 7. The tax break is expected to save Texas consumers millions in state and local sales taxes. Here are some highlights about the sales tax holiday:

• The tax holiday occurs every year on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of August. Qualifying items are exempt from state and local sales taxes.

• Most clothing and footwear priced at less than $100 will be exempt from sales tax. Customers will receive the break on individual items, regardless of the total amount they buy. For example, sales tax is not due if a customer buys six shirts each priced at $99.99. But full tax is due on a shirt sold for $100; the first $99.99 cannot be exempted.

Free from tax – or tax free?• Clothing and footwear used primarily for athletic activities

or for protective wear are not eligible for the exemption. Customers buying golf cleats or football pads, for instance, must pay sales tax. Athletic wear that is also used for participation in other non-athletic activities can qualify for tax exemption. For example, tennis shoes, baseball caps, and jogging suits are worn during everyday activities and thus may be purchased tax free during the holiday.

• Also excluded from the sales tax holiday are accessories such as jewelry and watches; items that are carried rather than worn, including handbags, briefcases and wallets; clothing rentals, such as formal wear and costumes; and repairs and alterations.

If you have questions about the sales tax holiday, please visit http://www.window.state.tx.us or call 1-800-252-5555.
