I found this 1965 Mercury Monterey in Kennewick, Washington. The owner ran a car wash and it was sitting out in front when we pulled up. My wife loves blue, so she loved the blue car with a blue convertible top. We drove it back 3 hours to Seattle. It stalled three times at the red light in front of his business, but then made it all the way home without a problem. There were 4,762 Monterey soft tops built in 1965. The base price was $3,165. Mine has the tilt wheel and variable wipers which were both first year options. The tilt wheel was a design purchased from Saginaw steering gear, a division of GM. Ford would not have their own tilt wheel on the full size cars until 1967. The big mercury stops just fine with four-wheel power drum brakes. It has power steering and full wheel covers and a rear radio speaker. I have put 5000 miles on it the last two summers and have had a great time corresponding with the founder of the 1965 Mercury registry, Eric Olson. He knows everything about these cars, and I have given him 15-20 VIN numbers I have found which makes him very happy as he grows his registry. You can visit his web site at 1965mercuryregistry.com. I have replaced the exhaust but I kept the single exhaust which it came with and even found a NOS muffler for a 1965 Mercury from Green sales in Cincinnati. I like to keep them the way they came from the factory. Also, there is a Facebook page started by a woman in Norway for the 1965-1968 full size Mercurys. That is a fun page to visit. These big cars are much appreciated in Sweden and Norway. When I go to car shows I occasionally find some parts for a 65, but those are pretty rare. Overall, I am having a lot of fun with this old big boat and I hope to keep it on the road for a few more years. There a few in the International Mercury Club, but you hardly ever see one at the local shows. The 66 is the same general body and interior with a different hood and grille. Also, in 1966 you could get the new factory installed 8 track player. Maybe I better get one of those!

Tim Cleary ’s 1965 Mercury Monterey

I have always liked the 1965 Mercury full size cars ever since my Dad brought home numerous Breezeways at lunchtime when he worked at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn as a Chassis Engineer. He also twice brought home a full size Mercury with the wrist-twist steering system which replaced the conventional steering wheel. The driver would place their thumbs inside the small six inch steering wheels mounted on either end of a pod. There were small chains inside the pod that connected the small steering wheels to the center link steering gear at the steering column. They were power assisted and you could steer the car with one hand on either wheel. This system was purportedly dumped because of the new collapsible steering columns that were on the horizon in 1968.

The big Mercs were redesigned in 65 to look more similar to the Lincoln, and more importantly to my Dad, received a much improved suspension front and rear.

The 65 was the first model to use the rear coil springs instead of the leaf spring in the rear, and the front suspension introduced that year was used all the way into the 1991 model year and was used in NASCAR applications for decades. I had a 64 Mercury Montclair, and the 65 is a much more enjoyable car to drive.

When I moved to Seattle two years ago, I began to look for an older car to enjoy. The full size cars seem to be a lot better value than the pony cars, except for the station wagons, which have gone way up in price and are hard to find.

The big mercury stops just

fine with four-wheel power drum brakes.

This month we thank Art Cairo for the really moving Feature Vehicle article about the Cairo family’s 1950

Mercury. We also thank Van Nazarian for his pictorial about an old gas station; Hank Dawson for his article about a car show fundraiser; Bill Gipperich for his article about the first club publication; and Denise Rohde for her banner!

Finally, we thank our team of Staff Contributors for their articles and photographs.

We are again very low on Feature Vehicle material. Please help here!

As some of you know, I have resigned as Editor of the Rotunda Times. I have very much enjoyed composing this publication over the past seven years, but now feel that it’s time to move on!

I wish whoever takes over as Editor the best, and will work to make the transition smooth.

Consider the 15th of the month as a deadline for getting announcements or other materials to the Editor for that month’s newsletter.

Finally, don’t forget to visit our website www.fmrcoa.org where you can read these newsletters in color and see more event pictures, and videos.

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Hello Members,

Well spring is just around the corner and I can’t wait. The sun will be peeking through those clouds more and more each day.

Our Dearborn 2018 Swap meet in Belleville plans are moving along very well. This year we have our normal ad for Cruis’news and we will also have a separate ad for our car show. This year all profits for our car show will go to Motts Children’s Hospital.

Our Swap meet event T-shirts are being redesigned and this year we will also have a new club vintage T-shirt for our members.

This was a request from our members and we will always try to do all we can for our members. We also have new club hats and we are selling them for $10 each. They have our gold V8 emblem from our club logo. This gold emblem will be representing our 50 years as a Car Club coming up in 2019.

March 31 we will be going over to Brothers Restoration in Troy to see what they’ve been working on. For April and May we have several events planned just visit our website at www.fmrcoa.org in the Events section of the website.

Speaking about the website we have a new webmaster. His name is Will Hill and he has our website up and running at full speed. Thank you Will.

So members let’s get those cars uncovered dusted off and ready to cruise for 2018.

Please remember Mays meeting will be the Club Auction.

That’s it for now. Your President,

Jim

Just a few of Gerry’s contributions other than Board Director included clothing sales, swap set up, security, parking and clean up as well as he ran his grill at our Hines Park Picnic. Jim went through a list of upcoming Club Events. Stan outlined his advertising plan for Dearborn 2018. Dale gave Treasurer’s Report.

• Secretary Mark explained a request from Piquette Plant Model T Museum about their Adopt a Car Program. The Membership was asked to approve a donation to the Museum. By a show of hands vote, we are now foster parents to a 99 year old Ford T. Next Item, Russ Roberts volunteered to be our Auctioneer at the May Club spring clean auction. Treasurer Dale and Jerry Worful will assist Russ. All proceeds of Auction go to Club Treasury and unsold items will be given to former Directors Don S and Bob T to sell at summer swap meets.

• After short car talk, Share Your Hobby replaced show and tell. Larry W and Dave K share a train addition. Terry discussed her Dog Show passion. And lastly, Cole G. brought examples of old cameras he collected. He places them on the dashes of old cars at shows to enhance period look. 50/50 Adjourn.

He asked to reduce the price of remaining 2017 shirts and club hats. Jim will place order at our embroidery store. VP Stan reviewed the Dearborn 2018 Cruis’News Ads strategy with the board. Secretary Mark researched ValuePac and Save-on coupon advertisements directed to local communities near Fairgrounds. The Board rejected the coupon mailings.

• Jim will contact Varsity Ford, letting them know our Car Show is a Mott Charity event and see if they will include Dearborn 2018 Car show in advertising. Jim hired a web master. Dearborn 2018 plaques and trophies need to be made. Jim reviewed upcoming events and guest speakers.

• The Dearborn 2018 pricing quotes will start with last year’s suppliers of dumpsters, golf carts, and Porta potties.

• Open Discussion, Bill requested of Pres. Jim set a monthly day to hold board meetings. Secretary Mark brought up Adopt a Car from Piquette Museum. The board approved letting membership decide the merits of the Adoption Program at the next Club meeting. President Jim was asked to add the upcoming May Club Auction to the March meeting agenda. Type of auction will be an open live auction and a volunteer auctioneer will be needed for auction in May. Lastly, Jim contacted Treasurer Dale to go over Club Financial issues with Dale on speaker phone.

This month we have a postcard from the very famous Old Clinton Inn, located in Dearborn, MI. This card is one of those that you would have purchased in a set at the souvenir stand at the Henry Ford Museum back in the 1950’s. If you look closely at the photo you will notice that there are no sidewalks, parking lots, or even electrical wires showing. Also, there are some surveyor stakes in the foreground of the photo, so the picture was probably taken during the renovation. It has been many years since I was at the Clinton Inn, but as I remember the wide open spaces around the inn are long gone.

Well, the last of the early in the season indoor swap meets was the East Side A’s 48th annual swap meet, and it was a good one. The club sold over 140 indoor tables, and the Ford dealership was packed with spectators from 7:00 am too well after noon. The weather was perfect; there were lots of car parts for sale. There were no empty tables, and the club was careful to make sure that there were car parts and car parts only. Too many swap meets have turned into garage sales lately, and have shall we say: gone

downhill! I saw many FMRC members as both vendors and spectators, and there were plenty of FMRC swap meet flyers passed out (thank you fellows for doing that). Now with the nicer weather, the outdoor swap meets will start up, and hopefully we can enjoy those in fresh air and sunshine. Next month is a small swap meet at Auto City in Flint, and then the big Monroe meet. And, it is never too early to start thinking about our own FMRC meet in July. It will be here sooner than you think.

Icon Dan Gurney Passes Away at Age 86Story and photos courtesy of Ford Performance ... Part 2

But Gurney’s expertise in racing didn’t just pertain to the driver’s seat, he was an innovator who designed and built cars as well. He is the only American to win a Formula One race in a car he built by himself (1967 Belgian Grand Prix) and was instrumental in designing the closed-faced helmet. In addition, he invented what became known as the Gurney flap, which is a small piece of metal that is attached to the rear wing of a car, increasing downforce.

In recognition of those achievements and others, Gurney was presented with the prestigious Edison-Ford Medal for Innovation by The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Mich., on Oct. 29, 2014.

That is just one of the many honors Gurney received during his lifetime. He is a member of just about every motorsports hall of fame in the world, and was presented the Spirit of Ford Award in 1999, which is the highest racing honor the company can bestow.

“Dan Gurney epitomized the best of American auto racing,” said Edsel B. Ford II, a member of Ford Motor Company’s board of directors and a close friend of Gurney. “All of us involved in the Ford racing program mourn the loss of this great legend. Dan was a renowned driver and team owner. He was also a celebrated innovator who received the Thomas Edison-Henry Ford Medal for Innovation from the Trustees of The Henry Ford.

“We will always remember his 1967 Le Mans win in the Ford Mark IV, his early testing of the Mustang I prototype, the Ford NASCAR wins with teams like the Wood Brothers and his vision for a Ford Indy car program that brought Colin Chapman and Jim Clark together.

“Dan represented himself and his country with class and dignity in racing events around the world. More importantly, we’ll remember that infectious smile, that twinkle in his eye when he told a great story and the love he had for Evi and his sons, Justin, Alex, Dan Jr., Jimmy and Danny. We didn’t just lose a motorsport icon, we lost a friend. There may never be another one like him.”

Bill Ford, Executive Chairman, Ford Motor Company, echoed that sentiment. “We are deeply saddened about the passing of Dan Gurney,” he said. “His legacy as a racer and innovator may be unmatched in the history of the sport. We are honored that so much of that legacy, including the All American Le Mans victory in 1967, came with Ford. He was a great friend to Ford and respected around the world

Sometimes I do an article that can be considered better than some other article, and sometimes a particular article that is not interesting to you may be interesting to someone else so, like many other things, it’s all relative. Thinking about that, even my relatives are relative, as I like some better than others. I even liked my last article, and I put a lot of time into it because it’s an ongoing problem with many specialty cars, particularly older ones, so I am going to continue with more information on limits of cooling systems in this article.

Cars have cooling systems that are more limited than trucks, busses and vans. Antifreeze and pressure caps both raise the upper boiling point limit of the coolant. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze, with a 15 pound pressure cap, will raise the boiling point of the coolant to about 260 degrees Fahrenheit at sea level. For your information, we here in our suburban areas of Detroit are about 650 feet above sea level. It is not good to continue running an engine at this upper temperature limit, but even at that temperature the engine will not lose coolant because it’s not boiling. On more modern vehicles, the electric fans come on around 217*F, and most warning lights come on around 245-250*F.

If, for some reason, your coolant temperature would get to that upper limit, properly cooling it down is important. You first need to get out of the traffic mainstream for your own safety, then raise the hood and let the engine run at about twice your idle speed,

Brian ’s Tip

Temperature Limitsthat being about 1,200 – 1,500 RPM. By doing this you are taking the load off the engine and rapidly circulating the coolant. If you just shut the engine off when it’s at this upper limit, think about how the water pump stops circulating the coolant, then the coolant next to your cylinders and cylinder heads will boil, then you will boil over and loose coolant. This afterboil usually will not cause any harm to the engine, but when the system loses coolant it can certainly cause more problems later on if not noticed. Also remember that if your engine did lose coolant, the coolant temperature sensor may not be submerged in any coolant, therefore it would not make you aware of an overheating issue and impending damage to your engine. If you can stand the extra heat, just remember that if you are getting close to the upper limit, and haven’t a place to pull over, you can turn on the heater with the fan on full blast to dissipate more heat through the heater core, which in essence is a small radiator, and a part of the entire cooling system.

Companies that build engines usually state that as long as their engine does not lose coolant it will not be harmed, but they go on to caution about continuous running in the red zone or with the indicator light on. If the engine continues to operate at the upper limit it will take it’s toll and harm the engine, but short blasts should cause no harm. If the engine is allowed to continue running at it’s upper limit, combustion chamber temperatures can cause detonation (ping/knock), which contributes to burned valves and harm to other components of engines. Also, remember that the engine oil runs at temperatures considerably higher than the coolant, as the oil does not circulate through a radiator, and the oil can begin breaking down and/or varnishing to cause even more harm to the engine.

The Roving Reporter: Hard to believe…..there are no swap meets to report on this month! I did attend one meet which was advertised in Cruis’ News, and even had a ¼ page display ad. We arrived and the building was vacant. Several other people arrived, including one with a load of parts, but obviously it wasn’t going to “happen”. The next day I called the number in the ad and was told they cancelled it because of poor vendor response. At least it wasn’t a long drive. On the way home we stopped at Roadside Attractions on M-24 south of Lapeer. This antique shop has

a linen texture. These cards were sold in the gift shop for ten cents each or three for twenty-five cents….at least that is what they were going for when I was in elementary school. The postcard shown here is a street scene in the village with some of the buildings in the background. What is interesting is that the subject of the card is a 1908 Buick! You would have thought they would have used a Model “T” !
