The Rotary Club of Santa Maria had its
first meeting as a provisional club on Oc-
tober 10, 1922. The 19 members chose
Jesse H. Chambers to be the first Presi-
dent, and George M. Scott to be the first
Secretary. The first official meeting was
held on December 5, 1922 at the Santa
Maria Inn, and on December 19th the Dis-
trict Governor, Jack Williams, presented
the club with its charter.
Our club was sponsored by the Santa
Barbara Rotary Club, and in turn we have
sponsored the San Luis Obispo Rotary
Club in 1923, the Lompoc Rotary Club in
1925, the Guadalupe Rotary Club in
1940, the Santa Maria South Rotary Club
in 1973, the Santa Maria Breakfast Ro-
tary Club in 1984, and the Nipomo Ro-
tary Club in 1997. The Rotary Club of
Santa Maria has also sponsored two In-
teract clubs, the Santa Maria High School
Interact Club in 1982, and the St. Joseph
High School Interact Club in 2007.
Cecil B. DeMille regularly attended our
club meetings in May and June of 1923
when he was filming the movie "The Ten
Commandments" at the Guadalupe
Dunes. When he returned to Hollywood
he had his prop department make a Ro-
tary Wheel, which he gave to our
club. This wheel now is housed in the
Santa Maria Historical Museum.
On November 13, 1925 Paul Harris, the
founder of Rotary, was traveling between
Los Angeles and San Francisco and made
up at our club. In 1985 Rotary Interna-
tional President, Carlos Canseca, chose
to visit our club over larger and more
well-known clubs in Santa Barbara and
Bakersfield. Rotarians from all over the
district attended.
In 1996 our club started a major fund
raising endeavor that was called Monte
Carlo. Now this event is called the Ro-
tary Harvest Gala and annually raises
$60,000.00 for worthwhile projects.
Our commitment to the Rotary motto
"Service above Self" is exemplified by
the number of different types of projects
that we support both locally and interna-
tionally. We have participated in local
hands-on projects like the Guadalupe
Dunes Center clean up and the Salvation
Army bell ringing at Christmas. We
have purchased dictionaries for all the
third graders in the Santa Maria Valley
for three consecutive years. Some of our
funds have gone to programs at the Boys
and Girls Club and the Y.M.C.A. Inter-
nationally we have participated in water
projects in Africa and Mexico, and have
helped furnish an orphanage in
China. We have donated over
$100,000.00 towards the Rotary Interna-
tional Polio Eradication project.
The Rotary Club of Santa Maria has over
200 Paul Harris Fellows, and has donated
over $231,000.00 to the Rotary Interna-
tional Foundation.

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria
In our final week of collecting donations of
soaps, shampoos, conditioners, tooth brushes,
tooth paste, mouthwash, and lotion we received
many donations. Many thanks go out to all
those who took trips and pilfered these items in
the name of Rotary. I am sure that the Good
Samaritan Homeless Shelter and the Domestic
Violence Solutions will be very appreciative.
We will be scheduling our stuffing party for
some time within the next few weeks. So
please scrutinize the weekly newsletter to find
the time and date of this fun event. Again, many
thanks to all those who have contributed thus
far to this project.
John Henning
I am sure that many of you will be glued
to your TV sets watching the basketball
games this weekend and on Monday
night, but the real March Madness has
ended. Although we put up a valiant
fight, the Rotary was edged out at the
last minute by the Kiwanis as they eked
out a 21 to 11 victory in blood donations
to the Tri Counties Blood Bank. Many
thanks those hardy and hearty souls who
donated a unit of blood in March. All in
all we should be happy that over 30 units
of blood were donated in this contest.
And as the Chicago Cubs fans perenni-
ally say, “There’s always next year.” In
the history of this competition we are
now 1 win and 10 losses. If I weren’t an
optimist I might think we were cursed,
but knowing the members of our club as
I do, I’m certain of it. We’ll get them next
time.
Sir John Henning

What is a District Assembly? The District Assembly is the most important meeting of the new Rotary year! It provides M.I.T. – Motivation, Information, and Training for incoming Club Officers and Board Members. It’s an opportunity for new members to learn more about the goals and activities of Rotary; a chance to prepare for potential future leadership involvement at the Club, District, and International levels; and a forum for meeting motivated Rotarians from other Clubs in our great District 5240.
Who should attend the District Assembly? Attendance at a District Assembly can be important to any serious Rotarian. Typically, those who profit most include: all
incoming Club Officers, President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Directors. All Chairpersons under the Directorships of Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, International Service, and the Rotary Foundation should attend. Special training is also offered in classes such as Social Media, Membership and Rotaract. The District Assembly is great for all new Rotarians or any Rotary member who has never attended a District Rotary event along with any committed Rotarian who may become a future Club leader, or who is a past leader with experiences and ideas to share. Of particular note, we will have Lauren Marquez-Viso, The Rotary Foundation Grants Coordinator, at the Oxnard venue to present training from the expert at Rotary International. The morning Grants session with her will be for District staff. The afternoon session will be for club leaders (International Service Director, club Grants Chair, etc.)
Why attend the District Assembly? The District Assembly is an important opportunity for an individual Rotarian to learn, to share, and to better understand Rotary at the Club, District, and International levels. Assembly classes will be coordinated and taught by dedicated and knowledgeable Rotarians who promise to make your day a useful and enjoyable one. A major purpose of the Assembly is to avoid reinventing the wheel, to offer experiences of those who “ have been there.” Cost of the District Assembly Cost for the District Assembly will be nominal and will be for an entire club regardless of the number of attendees to encourage attendance and opportunities for training. All clubs will be assessed regardless of number of members attending or if no members attend.

Editor’s Note: I have finally learned how to do “imbedded hot links.” In the past you would see the full URL address to the Website. Now you will see verbiage such as “The Rotary Club of Santa Maria” which you can know is a hot link as your cursor will turn into a little hand as you hover over the link. In addition “links” are usually blue in color and underlined. I
hope this makes your reading of The Rotator, on line, more enjoyable and rewarding.
