The Rotary Sun

It was June 2009 when President Elect Winston called me to see if I was willing to fill a vacancy on the Board for the upcoming year. It was only a few weeks before I was due to take over as a Director and he convinced me that the role would be easy. The position was to be the Director in charge of Club Service, of which I knew nothing about. Both Winston and Christine assured me though that it would be easy. Reflecting back, I have to say they were right. The reason they were right is that I have a stupendous committee that I work with who basically do my job for me! But let me reflect back to the early days. The first assistance was from a very well organised Bruce John (yes, I did say ‘a very well organised Bruce John’) who was able to provide me with all background material from when he was a Director of Club Service. He set out exactly how he had organ-ised the Club Service Committee and assured me that it would be easy (have I mentioned that before?) provided everyone on the Committee was assigned a task for the year and completed the task. That is exactly what happened and I would like to thank the following for making Club Service run so smoothly - Simon A, Gillian, Andrea, Garth, Martha, Berna, Tara, Rosie, Claire, Geoff, Pauline, Colleen, Christie and Raquel. But the real question I had when I started with Club Service was ‘what does Club Service do’? I am sure many of you reading this are asking the same ques-tion. When I decided to become a Rotarian it was to work in the community and help raise funds for those who need it; not to run the business of Rotary. In essence that is what Club Service does. In order to make it easy for all of us to get together for fellowship, learn

about Rotary, commit to projects, assist with pro-jects, commit to fundraising and assist with fundrais-ing, we need people to run the business. The Club Service Committee organises the meetings – includ-ing the venue, the greeter, four-way test, grace and the raffle. The Sergeant is part of this Committee and is the one who sets up every meeting, raises a lot of money through fines and tells bad jokes. Club Service is responsible for making sure the projector and screen are there, to ensure the speakers are slot-ted in and that the microphone has batteries. We ensure that there are banners; small ones for visiting Rotarians and large ones to display the banners we are given by visiting Rotarians. When Martin goes on vacation for half of the summer we have to ar-range for other caterers to come in. Club Service looks after the Club Forum which includes arranging a venue, catering, coming up with results for a ques-tionnaire and presenting the questions. Club Service provides you with The Sun which is published every week and is fantastic. Club Service arranges for guest speakers. Club Service ensures we have gifts for our speakers. We arrange for shirts and hats to be produced. We arrange for signs, such as the sign in front of Grand Old House. And after every break-fast, we wash the dishes. To sum it up, Club Service is behind the scenes mak-ing sure the infrastructure is there so our fellow Ro-tarians don’t have to worry about it. That is what we do. As for my year as a director, I must say it has been easy. Sure, the Board meetings that start at 07h00 are a little early! And are they boring sometimes – you bet! But learning about Rotary as an organisa-tion and how our Club is run is an incredible experi-ence.

Silence is Golden

Wednesday Funny Morris and his wife Esther went to the state fair every year, And every year Morris would say, 'Esther, I'd like to ride in that helicopter.' Esther always replied,' I know Morris, but that heli-copter ride is fifty dollars, And fifty dollars is fifty dollars' One year Esther and Morris went to the fair, and Mor-ris said, 'Esther, I'm 85 years old. If I don't ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance.' To this, Esther replied, 'Morris that helicopter ride is fifty dollars, and fifty dollars is fifty dollars.' The pilot overheard the couple and said, 'Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don't say a word I won't charge you a penny! But if you say one word it's fifty dollars' Morris and Esther agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, But still not a word. When they landed, the pilot turned to Morris and said, 'By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't. I'm impressed!' Morris replied, 'Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Esther fell out, But you know, fifty dollars is fifty dollars!'

President Elect Michael has it all under control

- In Honduras that is. CASINO NIGHT - Tickets will be ready for distribution at next Wednesday's meeting and come in books of 4. We will assign every Ro-tarian 4 tickets but like last time, if you do not want any, we will try and redeploy to other Rotarians. To those of you that sell lots of these tickets, please get back to me with your ticket requests before Wednesday and I will try and accommodate. Remember that we have sold out our last 2 Casino Nights and this one promises to be no different, so please get your requests in early. CAR RAFFLE - We are starting this fund raiser early this year and will have the vehicle and tickets at next Wednesday's meeting. As usual, each member will be assigned 2 books of tickets and because the sales cycle will run from earl February through to July 24th, we are hopeful that this year will top all years with record ticket sales. Since we will have both tickets and vehicle by Wednesday, we are plan-ning to display it at Jazz for Haiti and hopefully

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk and vanilla. Set aside. Place 1 tablespoon of ricotta in the center of 4 of the pieces of bread and spread around slightly.
