Volume 80, Issue 32, 03 March 2015 Today was committee report day. Prior to the report presentation President Lisa introduced the guests, Mark Britt and Kelly Abfalter and welcomed them to the Essendon Rotary club lunch meeting. Jenny Foster was presented a sponsor pin for introducing a new member Tammy Willenberg. Sergeant Roger Leask introduced the first speaker Neil Henderson who spoke on three important points. Neil spoke first about the Rotary Nomads club which began on the 17th June 2014 and became a chartered club in early 2015. A thank you from the Rotary Nomads were conveyed to the members of the Rotary club of Essendon. Secondly Neil explained to the members about the new Rotary attendance rules and said that there needs to be 12 hours of service work every six months, he further clarified that the work that members do does not necessarily mean attendance at meetings but work at committee level, organising events, providing assistance in kind as well as other services performed for the benefit of helping the community will all be considered. The third and last point that Neil explained to the members was the new improved Essendon Rotary club website and the software associated with it and how this interactive website will hold all the details of club members and how members can, after obtaining a login be able to update their details on line. Neil further stated that the events calendar will be online and the person managing this can update the speakers and time etc on line. Neil explained how the log in works and encouraged members to login and view information once they receive the password and login details, he further stated that the weekly Bulletin contact will be online in the near future. Neil thanked Grant Sheldon for his work in the development of the online website. Raffle Michael Cariss won the raffle but fail to draw the joker! Art show Veronica O’Sullivan informed the members about how the Art show at the historic Columban’s mission went, she thanks all the volunteers and contributors and stated that it was an outstanding event and that the Columbans were delighted to have us as guests, she further observed that many came to see the historic mansion as well. Veronica stated that this was a great first round and that there are a myriad of ways to improve the event and its outcomes in the future and this event was a great base to build on.
Veronica stated that 15,000 people came to visit the art works and the funds raised as a joint venture between Essendon Rotary club and East Keilor Rotary club will go Peru for the benefit of the deserving people in that country. President Lisa thanked Veronica for the hard work she undertook to make this event an outstanding success! Veronica also spoke about the youth exchange program and thanked the members who undertook to look after our exchange student. Veronica also spoke about International women’s day and that fact that ERC was sponsoring a table at this event

Tammy Willenberg provided to members a survey to be completed with questions in order to find the views of the members on improvements to ERC and the way we do things. Community committee report Alistair Fraser highlighted the work done by the committee by pointing out the following projects:
Men’s shed
Golf day
Trolley dash
Breathometer & FTD
Relay for Life – whole of club
Alistair stated that Caroline Chisholm Society will be the next big project in the new year as the CCH provides support to people effected by family violence. International report Steve Roe presented the international report and thanked John Odgers and Jenny Foster for their for at DIK RAWCS donation process
An article was placed in Contact in January explaining the new on-line donation system for projects registered
with RAWCS. It is proving to be a very efficient process, it eases the workload on our Club treasurer
considerably and for the three donations which were made by cheque, tax receipts were emailed back within
8 days, a marked improvement on the original system.
Interplast
In the last Rotary year our Club donated $1500 towards Interplast. We were one of seven D9800 clubs to do so
and we received official acknowledgement of our donation in the latest Interplast newsletter.
Donations in Kind
We now have a new representative on-site at DIK – John Odgers has recently entered retirement and now
spends every Thursday in the store. This has already had an impact especially with sourcing items for our
international delegations and John has received glowing praise from Laurie Fisher at DIK for his efforts.
Philippines
The Philippines delegation took place in February. It was very successful with 12 people taking part including
our current VicPol mentee, Belinda Bales. A couple of highlights were:
Seventeen Foetal Dopplers were presented to the Philippines General Hospital. This hospital sees 300 expectant mothers every day and was previously doing so with only one foetal monitor so this generous donation by the Rickards will make a huge difference there.
You will recall a motion passed by Board for $80,000 to purchase a lift and generator for the Makabata Guest House – the lift should be installed by the end of April which will make the guest house far more user-friendly and we can look forward to hearing more from Cathy Nicou about the delegation in the near future.
Kenya
Funding for the fistula operations in Kenya is no longer processed through our Club as the Rickards have
created a stand-alone maternal and child health project which is registered with RAWCS. The important thing
is that hundreds of women will still benefit from these life-changing operations and Connie can feel very proud
of her involvement in the instigation of this project. Despite this administrative change, Dave Rickards has
stressed the importance of his connection with our Club and he looks forward to that continuing for many
years.
NHWO continues with 16 children currently supported by the program. A recent request for donations
allowed the current school fees to be paid. Two in-calf cows were purchased last year marking the start of a
breeding program which will hopefully lead to the New Hope project becoming self-sufficient. Both cows have
since produced female calves and the mothers and babies are all doing well.
We intend to ship a container to Kenya by the end of May – items to be shipped include hospital beds, medical
equipment, clothing and Days for Girls sanitary kits. The container will be generously funded by honorary
member, Noel O’Brien.
The next Kenyan delegation is planned from 1-14 September. Further details will be published in Contact - please
let Connie know if you would like to take part in that. Having travelled with the 2013 delegation I can guarantee
you will have a wonderful time.

Myanmar
In November last year Constitutional Democracy Project workshops were held in Yangon and the new capital
Nay Pyi Taw. The workshops were endorsed by the Australian Embassy in Yangon and attended by political
figures from all over the country. Our Club sponsored the workshops with a $5000 donation sourced through
associates of Tim Anderson and our sponsorship was recognised in all official documentation. This is a
wonderful project and we are privileged to be a part of Myanmar’s transition to democracy.
Dr. Michael Augello spoke at the night meeting on 17 February and gave us a very good insight into the
emergency training that he and his colleagues are providing for the local doctors in Yangon.
Our delegation departs this coming weekend. Thirteen delegates will be transporting medical equipment for
the Yangon General and Central Women’s Hospitals. We’re also be taking baby clothes, Days for Girls sanitary
kits and a large number of new spectacle frames, the latter very kindly obtained by Graeme Wood. We will be
providing books and uniforms for a kindergarten and a Monastic school, continuing our support of the Hope
for Myanmar Orphanage and the Eden Centre for Disabled Children, as well as attending a meeting of the
Rotary Club of Yangon and a reception at the Australian Embassy to meet with the new-appointed
ambassador Mr. Nicholas Coppel.
A full program for what will be a very satisfying delegation.
Cambodia
Jenny Foster and Jane Carbone continue to put in a lot of hours at DIK in support of their activities in
Cambodia. While not a formal RCE project, it does have the endorsement of our Club's Board which therefore
allows the ladies full access to the goods held at the store. Great work there by Jenny and Jane.
Fundraising
Anne Rogers arranged a cruise ship fundraiser held on 10 February which raised $3000 for our projects in
Myanmar. Thanks go to Anne for her organisation and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line for their support of that
event.
We also received a very generous bequest of $60,000 from the estate of a former client of Tim Anderson’s.
$20,000 of this will be used to support the projects of this year’s Myanmar delegation.
So a lot of good things have happened in the International arena this year and this is sure to continue under
Anthony Taranto’s leadership in the new Rotary year.
Packing boxes at DIK
Jenny Foster explained the work involved in packing boxes of medicinal items to be sent to Cambodia and
wanted to know if any members were available to help pack the boxes at DIK
