1976/77 - President was our own Jim Bridle

At the beginning of the meeting, acting President Norm addressed the club regarding Debbie Pugh and the challenge she faces at the Hamilton General Hospital as our meeting was taking place. We all wish Deb and the Pugh family a successful outcome as was also echoed in the grace given by Christine Johnston. It would appear our prayers and thoughts were answered from an e mail received after the meeting from Will that Deb’s surgery went well. Induction of two new members next week, Linda Barnett and Angus Shuttleworth. Peter Knoepfli reminded all those involved that the interview process will be Wednesday night at 6:30 at the Brant

Children’s Centre May 26. Arrive a few minutes early if you are involved in the interview process. Fifty-one applications were received with 20 interviews to be completed.

Bill Pittman reminded the club June 8 is Awards night. Feel free to invite your spouse or a special guest. The meeting starts at 6 o’clock with dinner to commence at 7. Location is the Atrium Restaurant on Burloak in the most southern Reimer building. Brent reminded the club the music festival will be November 8 – 20 sponsorships are most certainly welcome and Brent can provide you with forms if needed. Do remember you can also participate in the administration and organization of the participants on a daily basis. Contact Brent for more information. Distributed at the club was a fundraiser brochure for the JBMH Foundation Amazing Bed Race on September 26, 2010. For more information go to www.amazingbedrace.ca . Next GATORADE needed not for the bed race but Camp Manitou for a special vehicle to transport goods around the camp ground. The vehicle is to cost about $7,000, $2,000 which is presently raised by the Scouts. Our involvement would be to donate $2,000 for the purchase of the vehicle with a loan of $3,000 temporarily to cover donations still to come. The motion was moved by Paul Kadlick, seconded by Joseph Aghion and carried by the club.

CELEBRATION OF ROBERT VANTRIKT’S YEARS IN OUR ROTARY CLUB

This week was Robert’s last week of attendance in our club having been a member since 1981. Sponsored by Fred Hill, Robert became an active member in our club particularly in the organizational areas. Robert officially joined Rotary in 1961. He certainly led a very active life. A part of the resistance in Holland, he was captured by the Germans, spent 3 years in a work camp, having survived that, he walked through the Black Forest to end up on the doorstep of his future wife Arentine. Robert obtained an engineering degree with a passion for shipbuilding. His travels and work allowed him to reside in Holland, Indonesia, and eventually ended up in Canada where he has been residing since. A special interest in boating gave Robert the travel bug and once in North America via trailer, he travelled from coast to coast. Always a story teller with a good joke, acting President Norm thanked him for his years of service and the memories which he has provided to us all. In the presence of his daughter Els, acting President Norm presented Robert with a plaque for his

contribution to our club and the special person that he is dated May 18, 2010. John Thorpe did an outstanding presentation on Robert and his history in our club and following the presentation we celebrated the moment with a special cake in Robert’s honour. In the final minutes of the meeting, Robert VanTrikt extended his thanks to the club for all the memories and opportunities Rotary has provided him throughout the years. Robert reminded the members that he will be living in Holland with his daughter close by and the door will always be open. He can be reached by letter, by phone or through his daughter’s e-mail. history of Rotary involvement. Linda is a Bank Manager who lives in Burlington and Manages the Scotia Branch on Lakeshore Rd East. Linda is a current Rotarian with the Brampton club and wishes to transfer her membership to Burlington Lakeshore Rotary. Members with questions, concerns or objections should contact Rob Wilkinson, Membership Chair, this week with their input. This is the first (second) notice of this proposed membership.

Ebbe Marquardsen

This week’s speaker travelled half way around the globe to thank the Rotary Clubs of Burlington for their commitment to the children of Sierra Leone to make their lives better in a country where war torn atrocities has changed the people forever. Ebbe Marquardsen along with Don Smith and Carmel Sukran had visited the country on several occasions to assist in helping those less fortunate. Ebbe started out with a brief 5 minute film presentation which set the tone for the speaker in the rebuilding process of Sierra Leone. Individuals from around the world rallied to the cause some as close as Burlington and others from Oklahoma. As speaker Pastor Hassan took to the podium he was particularly appreciative of the help that has come to his country and his city with particular attention and thanks to the Canadians. It was clear that following the war there were many orphans as a result of the actions of the rebels. It was not unusual to see 12 year old girls raising 8 or more orphans. Slavery resulted from corrupted rulers. Pastor Hassan felt priviledged in the country and in his early years he started out as a teacher. When war broke out he fled for his life along with a colleague of his. The brutality of the war and the rebels became gut wrenching clear when he found his friend beheaded with his head mounted on a stick. These images remain quite strong to this day but Pastor Hassan felt strengthened through his ministry to continue on a mission to provide the orphans with a better life. These children too had experienced severe emotional and psychological challenges as a result of their experiences surviving the rebels and the war. Pastor

Hassan realized that education was the media through which he could help the young people see the world in a more positive way. He often referred to the movie Blood Diamond as a method of understanding what his people had to endure at the cost of greed. Pastor Hassan’s mission in Burlington was to address all four Rotary Clubs and with thanks and hope that perhaps a District initiative through Rotary might help provide a more stable source of expertise and assistance in the rebuilding of his country and the lives of the youth. Questions were taken by Ebbe, Carmel and Pastor Hassan following his talk. Bev Bowra officially thanked Pastor Hassan on behalf of the club and related his experiences in Malawi as a common denominator in the value of assistance to these orphan children who can benefit so much from such a small bit of assistance and guidance.
