Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with great pleasure that I assume the role of Principal of Rosa Lee Carter Elementary. Over the

next few months, I look forward to getting to know the students, staff and families that are the heart

of this dynamic school community.

This is a short month for us with our last school day before the winter break being December 15th.

School will resume on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018.

While we only have two weeks in December, it is packed with many wonderful learning opportunities

for our Coyotes! During the week of December 4-8, we will celebrate our diversity with Inclusive

Schools Week. Through class meetings and planned activities, students will be reminded that

differences in race, religion, language, country of origin, disability, zip code and economic status

should be embraced. Inclusive practices enable us to model for the world that our strength comes

from our diversity and our humanity toward each other. We are fortunate to live in an area where

diversity is the norm, not the exception.

Some classes are planning winter parties for the month of December. As is our normal practice, any

treats served during holiday parties will be with parent knowledge and permission. Please do not

send any candy or food items for the class without first speaking to the classroom teacher.

I’d like to take a moment to highlight some amazing Project Based Learning (PBL) experiences

happening at RLC. Mrs. Crabb and Mrs. Unger did a fantastic job showcasing our third graders as

they presented the Brambleton Area Entertainment Map Project to the LCPS School Board on

Tuesday night. Students were proud to see their teachers on TV! Dr. Williams and School Board

members were impressed with the content rich project. They commented on the importance of

projects like this as they engage students in authentic work that will stick with them for a long

time. The hands-on experience, rather than simply having students learn the information from a text

and regurgitate facts, makes the learning more meaningful and relevant to the students.

Our third grade students’ next project involves ‘Analyzing Animals’. After learning about the various

biomes and ecosystems animals live in, students will choose an animal from the National Zoo to

research further and will design a zoo habitat for this animal based on physical adaptations and

characteristics. They will compare their design with the actual exhibit during their spring field trip to

the zoo and hope to have the opportunity to explain their design to zoo personnel. What a

wonderful way for students to make connections between their classroom experiences and the real

world!

Second graders are also working on a habitat project. Students are learning about

interdependence and how they can better support the plants and animals in their environment. The

culminating project for this unit is to design and build real bird feeders. Students will have the

opportunity to see if their bird feeder actually attracts birds!

I am pleased with the rich instruction being offered to students at Rosa Lee Carter. Parents are

always welcomed and encouraged to visit the classrooms to see the amazing learning experiences

happening in school. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. My door

is always open. I hope to meet you soon at some of our December events!

Diane

It’s not too late to get the flu shot if you have not already!

Symptoms of the flu virus may include fever, headache, extreme fatigue, dry cough, sore throat,

runny or stuffy nose, and muscle aches. The best way to protect your family from the flu is to get

vaccinated each year, and clean high-traffic areas with disinfectant wipes or spray often.

The top five most virus-contaminated areas in the home are:

1. Telephones (have you cleaned your cell phone lately)

2. Appliances such as the refrigerator and microwave

3. Faucets

4. Light switch and door handles

5. TV remotes

Remember to wash hands frequently, eat right, exercise, and get plenty of rest to help boost your

immunity, and to fight the effects of colds and flu.

The Rosa Lee Carter Register December 2017

Rosa Lee Carter is excited to recognize students who have shown exemplar behavior

throughout each school day. Every month, students will be selected to represent their

classroom as a student role model. These role models will be showcased on the morning

announcements and on the Rosa Lee Carter bulletin board. For November, the follow-

ing students have been leading the way by respecting self, others, and property.

Congratulations to these Leaders of the Pack!

This December, the PE program at Rosa Lee Carter Elementary School is

going to emphasize on underhand rolling a ball, so the students will be bowling this month.

We will continue to emphasize the importance of learning the five components of fitness

along with the five intensity levels. We believe as a PE department that the process of

participating regularly in a physically active lifestyle will lead to personal enjoyment,

challenge, satisfaction, and a healthy mind and body. We will emphasize to our students

to give their very best effort and show good sportsmanship in all they do in PE class.

In Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade, Ms. Sherline’s classroom lessons will be on Manners

and Respect within the school setting, as well as at home and in other social environments.

Mr. Hak continues to teach our third, fourth, and fifth grade students about Social Thinking

and The Unthinkables.

In addition to classroom lessons, we have lunch bunches with our students, as well as groups

to help foster leadership, develop anger management, friendship, and social skills, help

students deal with loss, family concerns, and teamwork. The focus for our students’ lessons

fall in the domains of academic development, college and career

readiness, and social/emotional development.

We hope you have a wonderful winter break!

Testing dates for the CogAT and SOL for the 2017-2018 school year have been posted on

the Rosa Lee Carter website.

We have many SOL review sites on the RLC website that students can access both at

home and at school. The sites can be found under the ‘For Students’ tab, and then

clicking on ‘Web Pages’.

If this is your child’s first year taking the SOL, they can become familiar with the format of

the SOL test by clicking on the link to VA DOE Practice Test and

clicking on SOL Practice Items.

Gifts That Keep on Giving!

Many parents have experienced the phenomenon of watching their child toss

aside a gift that has only kept him or her engaged for a brief time. As the

holidays approach, perhaps selecting gifts that focus on a child’s strengths will

result in continued interest throughout the long winter days.

Consider the following gifts that may enhance the various strengths of children. Verbal

learners will likely appreciate magazine subscriptions, journals with a variety of writing tools, or

word games. Visual learners may enjoy art supplies, a trip to a museum, or scrapbooking

materials. Musical children may be interested in concert tickets or a new instrument to learn.

Mathematical thinkers will benefit from logic-based games and activity books, puzzles, a toy

cash register, or a watch. Kinesthetic learners should make good use of sports equipment,

interactive video games, or building materials. Nature lovers might be inspired by maps of

nearby trails, camping gear, or gardening tools.

Many toys and games on the market promote thinking skill development in addition to

providing entertainment. Each year the editors of Parenting for High Potential, a National

Association for Gifted Children publication, review a variety of toys and games that are

currently on the market and publish a list of those that are thought to be the “best of the

best.” This list of mentally challenging, creative, and highly appealing toys and games can be

found at http://www.nagc.org. In addition, many students have been highly engaged in

games that have been introduced during SEARCH lessons, and have expressed an interest in

playing them at home with their family and friends. These games include Qwirkle, SET, IZZI,

Math Dice, and Dominoes.

Whatever your child’s strengths and interests, the perfect gift may simply be the gift of time.

Take a family hike, prepare a favorite meal together, or settle into a comfortable chair to

enjoy an interesting book. As we know, sharing an activity with your child is the best gift of all!

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions you may have

concerning gifted program services. Keep in mind that the LCPS gifted program is in

transition, and that attending one of the parent sessions offered in early 2018 will provide

valuable information. As in the past, third and fourth grade students with qualifying test scores

on the CogAT and/or NNAT will receive a district referral in mid-February. With parent

permission, these students will be evaluated for gifted services. Parents who do not receive a

district referral letter, but who wish to have their children evaluated for gifted services, may

submit a parent referral form from February 20-March 2, 2018. Parents of fifth grade students

who wish to have their children evaluated for gifted services in middle school, may also

submit a parent referral form from February 20-March 2, 2018.

Have a wonderful holiday season!

There is finally a chill in the air, which is the kind of weather that makes many of us feel like

staying inside and curling up with a good book. Luckily for our students, we have just

received about 600 new books here in our library, and with the success of our recent book

fair, we will be able to purchase even more new books to add to our collection – about

$6,000 worth!

If any parents or guardians are looking for volunteer opportunities within our school, we

would ask you to consider donating an hour or two of your time to assisting us in the library

with shelving books and other needed tasks. You can choose to drop in occasionally, or

pick a day and time to come each week. Volunteers are needed every day! We circulate

thousands of books each week, and we would be extremely grateful for any time you

could give us. If you might be interested, please contact Mrs. Boettke at [email protected]

for more information. No experience necessary!

Our annual Snowflake Holiday Shop is here! Students are invited to shop for gifts

for family and friends at our snowflake shop at school. The shop will be open during school

hours on Thursday, December 7th and Friday, December 8th. The price of items will range

from $1-$10.00 and we will help them gift wrap items if they wish. Teachers will be signing

up for a time to come down and visit the snowflake shop. Please check the PTO website

for more information and look for a flyer to come home.

Please visit the website at www.rlcpto.org for more information.
