The Romney Record
A publication of the Romney Institute for Law and Public Policy at Adrian College
2
Phillip Schaedler, as of September
5, 2017, became the new director
of The Romney Institute for Law
and Public Policy at Adrian Col-
lege. His predecessor, Christy
Cole, accepted a full time position
as Interim Chief Prosecutor and
Law Director with the City of Syl-
vania, Ohio where she and her
family live. This is a tremendous
opportunity for Christy and we
wish her all the very best. She will
be missed. Phil is a practicing at-
torney, mediator, and arbitrator
and has been licensed to practice
law since 1983. He graduated from
Michigan State University and the
University Of Toledo School Of
Law. Phil’s family has had a very
long association with Adrian Col-
lege as a result of his mother’s
status in the United Methodist
Women's Society and her relation-
ship with Dr. John Dawson. Phil’s
background is in healthcare law
and risk management, specializing
in the development and manage-
ment of offshore captive insurance
companies, risk finance and claims
management for some of the major
healthcare providers in Michigan,
North Carolina, and Georgia. He is
a partner in a small firm in Adrian
where a large percentage of his
time is devoted to alternative dis-
pute resolution in both general
civil and domestic relations dis-
putes. He is a trained facilitative
and evaluative mediator and an
arbitrator. A great deal of Phil's
work is devoted to family law and
medical malpractice cases. Phil
states, “my passion is the volun-
teer work I do for area school sys-
tems conducting restorative justice
conferences and peace circles as
well as training students in peer to
peer mediation.”

The Cato Institute is a public policy research organization — a think tank
— dedicated to the principles of individual liberty, limited government,
free markets and peace. Its scholars and analysts conduct independent, non-
partisan research on a wide range of policy issues. Founded in 1977, Cato
owes its name to Cato’s Letters, a series of essays published in 18th- cen-
tury England that presented a vision of society free from excessive govern-
ment power. Those essays inspired the architects of the American Revolu-
tion. And the simple, timeless principles of that revolution — individual
liberty, limited government, and free markets — turn out to be even more
powerful in today’s world of global markets and unprecedented access to
information than Jefferson or Madison could have imagined. Social and
economic freedom is not just the best policy for a free people, it is the in-
dispensable framework for the future.

On January 26, 2018, three students, as well as the
ACES coordinator had the opportunity to make a visit to
the 1st Judicial Court in Hillsdale County. While there,
they were generously welcomed by Jaime Wisniewski,
Adrian College Class of '12, who now serves as the As-
sistant Prosecutor under the direction of the Honorable Michael R. Smith.
Jaime (Besier) Wisniewski was a Criminal Justice major at Adrian College,
as well as a Graduate of the ACES (Adrian College Educational Success)
Program that we have here at AC. This program is designed for First Genera-
tion College Students to help them through their new and exciting college ex-
periences. Elizabeth Fraker is currently the coordinate of the ACES program,
which includes a goal of assisting our First Generation students in connecting
with professionals in the community that are practicing in their field of inter-
est. She was put in touch with Jaime by Marsha Fielder in the Alumni Office.
Jaime generously donated her time for us to visit her in person and learn
about her position as Assistant Prosecutor. The three students listed below, as
well as Elizabeth, gained a vast amount of knowl-
edge from their visit, and were kindly accommo-
dated by both Jaime and Judge Smith.
The AC students that attended this visit are all
First Generation College students, as well as
Criminal Justice Majors, including:
