The Rome-Carrollton Newsletter A Quarterly publication Rev. Dr. David S. Naglee District Superintendent _ September 15, 2015 Team Church It was with great joy and satisfaction that I sat down on Saturday afternoon and watched two football games. I enjoy watching football. I enjoy the athleticism involved, the strategy, even the talent it requires to referee a game. I’ve discovered I really enjoy the game a lot more if it is between two teams to whom I’m not emotionally attached! For as much as I enjoy the game, there is a growing trend that disturbs me. When a touchdown is scored, the player carrying the ball over the goal line now often struts around pointing to himself and us- ing other means to show his superiority and his ability to score. Granted, they have to have some ability and talent and many of them are very gifted. However, they are not the only player on the field. They would not have been able to score a touchdown had not ten other players made it possible; handing them the ball, passing the ball to them, blocking for them, drawing defensive players away from them, nobody committing a foul, the coach calling the right play, and more. They don’t score on their own, ever. Truth be told, I tend to forget that myself. There have been countless people through the course of my life who have called the right play for me, coached me, given me the ball, blocked for me, diverted danger away, cleared a path, helped me learn from mistakes, and cheered me on. It’s so easy to stand on an accomplishment and feel victorious and proud, yet rarely are we there only because of our own ability and power. In fact, at the very basic level we take a breath because God has given life to us. This single observation, that we do nothing on our own, should move us to gratitude. We should be thankful to the Almighty for giving us life, loving us, and providing for us physi- cally and spiritually. We should be thankful for the multitudes that have helped us get through life and succeed. But this single observation should also move us to appreciate the impact that we have on one another and the importance of a community of faith that genuinely works as a team for the sake of the team and not a single individual. What might the church look like if we were filled with true gratitude to God and one another? What might happen if we thought about us instead of me at the church? Something tells me it would be very different. David S. Naglee

Fall Confirmation Kickoff Retreat October 2-4, 2015

Whether your church starts Confirmation in the fall, after Christmas, or in the following spring, the beginning of the fall calendar is a great time to gather those who are looking toward con-firmation. You and your adult leaders can start to develop relationships and begin pointing youth toward a focus on where God has been working in their lives. That is why building rela-tionships and looking at the journey so far are the key themes for this retreat. You'll gather with youth groups from other churches around the conference but at the same time you'll concentrate on your own group building and how God is already a part of the lives of your youth. We've even got Camp Glisson staff coming to lead some "low elements initiatives" activities which help develop communication and leadership skills in your group. For more information, you can go to the conference website or email Sam Halverson at [email protected]

Conference News and Events

Church Communicator's Gathering: Let's Get Creative: Church communications directors, communication committee chairs and members, volunteers, and church staff charged with communications responsibilities are invited to gather for lunch, idea sharing, and a program on Wednesday, October 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mount Pisgah UMC in Johns Creek. For more information, email Sybil Davidson at [email protected]

UMVIM Leader Training: United Methodist Volunteers in Missions, trains participants to be mission team leaders with em-phasis on youth volunteers. It will be led by Rev. Scott Parrish, Mission Specialist with Conference Connectional Ministries and will be held on Saturday, October 10, 9:00 am to 1:00pm at Glenn Memorial UMC. Cost is $20. Register by email to Blair Setnor at [email protected]

United Methodist Center Office Move Underway: The North Georgia Conference office is moving. They will begin with most of the Conference Staff working from home September 10th. The targeted completion date to receive the Certificate of Occupancy for the new building is September 18. However, that Certificate of Occupancy is dependent on passing all inspections and receiving all permits. It also presupposes that the receipt of those permits will not require any major work beyond what is planned. Though staff will be working from home, they will have access to email and provisions have been made so that they can work remotely. It is very likely, though not yet confirmed, that all phone numbers will remain the same. We anticipate that communications equipment will be in place to allow voice mail and in some cases phone lines to be forwarded to staff mobile phones during the time between locations. "In summary, we are planning for most staff to be away from the office and working remotely for at least a week. We are also planning to be accessible to our constituents," said Keith Cox, Conference Treasurer and Director of Administrative Services. "Please pray for us and bear with us during the next few weeks." As of September 15, the mailing address for the United Methodist Center will be: North Georgia Conference 1700 Century Circle NE, Suite 100 Atlanta, GA 30345 The PO Boxes for Apportionment and Benefits payments will remain the same. Please continue to use those addresses.

It’s time for the Annual

Children’s Home Offering

Your United Methodist Children’s Home has just introduced a bold and daring new vision- we envision a world where every child is raised in a loving, compassionate and nurturing home. Sadly, this vision is not today's reality. We are in the midst of a child welfare crisis in the state of Georgia.

11,000 kids & growing in the Foster Care System (7,000 of those in North Georgia)

300 kids sleep in hotels each month with strangers (state contracted employees)

Your UMCH turns away 30 kids a week

Nearly 50% placed outside their home county

The good news is that the Church, our United Methodist Church, can solve these problems. We can get kids out of hotel rooms and into loving, compassionate, nurturing and Christian homes. We can keep kids in their home county. Like no other time in our state’s history, the Church is being asked by Georgia’s leaders to stand tall in the gap for our foster children and youth. We’re being asked to do what only the Church can do: To restore children and families from trauma through Jesus Christ.

To respond to the current crisis, your UMCH will expand its foster care services from 70 chil-dren served a day to 500 by 2020. This is a bold and ambitious goal and we cannot accomplish it without YOU. We need your help. We ask that you allow the Holy Spirit to work by taking our Amazing Grace annual offering on September 20 or another date that works best for you.
