JULY 31, 2016

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:21-23 "Vanity of vanities." Sometimes we may work for wealth, wisdom and knowledge only to discover that it has been left for someone who did not toil for it. The offering of our work, fatigue and pain, if not for God, can also be a kind of vanity. Second Reading: Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11 Paul urges us to seek what is good and from God, encouraging us to put our minds on the spiritual. He reminds us that, as Christians, we have died with Christ and are hidden with Christ until his glory is once again revealed. We are all one in Christ. Gospel: Luke 12:13-21 On being requested to settle a question of inheritance, Jesus heeds us to beware of all covetousness because our life does not consist on the wealth of possessions. Through the lesson of a parable Jesus reinforces this teaching, explaining that those who store up the treasures of wealth and possessions are not the richest in God's eyes.

From the desk of Fr. Charlie

Dear friends in Christ, I am so excited that we have our Knights of Columbus Council here at Saint Patrick’s. As you have read in the bulletin, our council has been named in honor of our late archbishop, Cardinal Edward Egan. The Knights are the largest Catholic fraternal service organization in the world. As of this year, there almost 2 million members in over 15,000 councils. Founded by Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney (1852-1890) in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1881, the Knights were first started as a mutual benefit society to help provide insurance for Catholic widows and orphans. This was a very important issue for Father McGivney. He had to leave the seminary temporarily to care for his family when his father died. Our Holy Father, Saint John Paul the Great, called the Knights of Columbus the “strong right arm of the Church”. They perform about 72 million hours of volunteer service each year! Back in March of 2008, Pope Benedict XVI declared Father Michael McGivney “Venerable” in honor of his heroic virtues, which opened the cause for his canonization. In addressing the Knights of Columbus back in 2013, Pope Francis had this to say: “On this occasion, I also wish to express my gratitude for the unfailing support which your Order has always given to works of the Holy See. May prayer, witness to the faith, and concern for our brothers and sisters in need always be the three pillars supporting your work both individually and corporately. In fidelity to the vision of the Venerable Father Michal McGivney, may you continue to seek new ways of being a leaven of the Gospel and a force for the spiritual renewal of society.” For those of you who may still be considering joining the Knights, I just wanted to give a little testimony about their many good works. The Knights devote themselves to service and raise money for many charities. They support the Catholic Church, especially at the parish level. They are a pro-family organization and are very involved in the sponsoring of activities with the family in mind. They are a devoutly pro-life organization and defend the sacredness of human life from conception to natural death. They are also faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church. They do so much work in the fostering of vocations to the Priesthood, Religious Life, and Holy Matrimony. Once again, on behalf of our Knights of Columbus Council, I invite any man over the age of 18 to join the Knights and get involved with our parish and our local community. Venerable Father Michael McGivney -pray for us! God bless you! Father Charlie
