Abstract

De-radicalization refers to preventive and counter-terrorism measures that aim at combating extreme and violent religious or political ideologies and adopting more moderate and non-violent views. Using documentary research evidences,approaches of combating or minimizing religious extremism in the 19th century Sokoto Caliphate will be highlighted. The paper will show the role of parents, scholars, community and leadership as part of strategies for the removal and minimizing religious extremism in the 19th century Sokoto Caliphate. The paper lastly shows the relevance of Sokoto Caliphate model to our contemporary Nigeria in combating radicalism and extremism.

Abstract

Thoughtful discourse on radicalization and its causes, non-violent extremism and violent extremism is crucial for the development of any society involved in conflicts for improving human security, peace building and reconciliation. In addition to, or opposed to, ideology and religion, other causes of radicalization are social, economic and political situations, poverty and overpopulation. However, Religion and politics are often mixed in order to use politics to justify religious goals, or vice versa. Invariably, psychological motives in radicalization processes are often linked to frustration and a hurt feeling of self-value, lack of respect, discrimination, as well as feelings of unfair treatment. This in turn paveway to incessant conflict with ethno-religious nature that consequently lead to wanton destruction of lives and properties belonging to opposing groups as witnessed in Nigeria today. In this regard, the paper focuses on a catalytic event on which the violent death of a family member may trigger the path to radicalization and eventually to terrorism as well as other factors responsible for radicalization among existing members of our present day Nigeria on one hand. While on the other hand the paper deals with the role of religious Organization in combating and managing the ugly trend of radicalizations. This is with the aim of bringing an end to the increasing trend of radicalization with its evil effects. The methodology to be adopted for the paper will be content analysis of extant literature on issues relating to radicalization and the expected role of religious organizations.

Abstract It is a fact that is obvious to most observers, that Nigeria is strategically becoming an area to recruiters of radical groups for theirselfish interest, especially, the politicians. This is with the sole aim of social, religious or political goals. To this end, violent extremist ideologies are gaining an unprecedented level of attraction across religious groups on the country, especially among the Muslims and Christians. Through observation and analytical approach, it is the hope of this paper to explore the level of prevalence of radicalism among the followers of the two major religions (Islam and Christianity) in Nigeria. In addition, the paper highlightsthe role of Muslim rulers in curbing and managing radicalism in Nigeria in order to bring an end to the reoccurrence of violence in the country. Extremism and radicalization are part of the greatest challenges facing the contemporary

Muslim communities across the globe. In the recent time, and more especially, in the

aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Islam has been synonymised with radicalism by some

Western politicians, academics and media. The fact that most of the radical extremists

justify their thoughts and actions by citing either Qur’an, hadith, or other Islamic sources,

confuses many people and made them to believe that these thoughts and actions are to some

extent justified by Islam.

Radicalism is not a new phenomenon in Islam, it traces its origin from the life time of the

Prophet Muhammad, May The Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him, as some

narrations revealed his encounter with the extremists. Radicalism also continues from the

era of Rashidun to the present time.

This paper aims at exploring how both the Qur’an and the hadith literatures deal with the

issue of radicalization, how the Prophet, May The Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon

him engaged with the radicals and how he sets some procedures that will prevent the

society and individuals from radicalization. As a means of de-radicalization, the paper will

also tackle look at how the Qur’an and Sunnah address the issue of dealing with the

opponent(s), from both Muslims and non-Muslims. The paper will conclude by suggesting

how to prevent radicalism and how to de-radicalize some radicals in the contemporary

period.

Abstract

Many people do perceive adherence to pure Islamic principles as radicalism especially the western oriented intelligentsias. This idea is quite erroneous from Islamic point of view more so attributing radicalization and terrorism to Islamic faiths and practice is clearly unjustifiable going by the orthodox teachings of Qur’an and hadith of the noble prophet (S.A.W.) who always preached peace and brought peace to humanity.It is in the light of this that the paper wants to present some textual provisions from Qur’an and Hadith on addressing radical approach to fundamental issues that can lead to public unrest and terrorism.It also defines radicalism and de-radicalization from both western and Islamic perspectives. Lastly the paper ended with possible solutions towards de-radicalizing the youths who are mostly not well informed of true Islamic teachings.

Abstract

Islam is a religion for all creatures in the universe including human beings and jinn. Extremism in all its ramification has been condemned by the Creator. This paperintends to look at extremism by some Muslims, concerning the religious practices whereby they go extra miles in misapplying verses of the Qur’ān and Prophetic traditions based on their personal interest to attack innocent citizens. The methodology applied by the research is exploration of the Qur’ān and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), alongside the related library literatures. However, it is concluded that since Islam described Muslims as blessed community (Ummah), its followers should not be attacking or killing any soul without justification.It is discovered that those radicals are executing their devilish actions base on ignorance of the religion and their personal agenda. There is need for proper understanding of the religion and one should not exceed the boundary in whatsoever he/she is doing in the name of religion.

Radicalism in various forms has made significant inroads, misperception and misunderstanding in several countries, by several bodies and its functionaries. From the time of the Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) peace and tolerance were practiced between different religious groups with respect for distinction of belief. There is no doubt that, before one starts doing something, one should know how to perform it well, to harvest its desired fruits. Likewise, it is by no means reasonable that one starts worshipping one's lord the way through which one's salvation from hellfire and admittance to paradise are gained without having due knowledge. This paper aimed at disclosing the tenants of Sunnah in performing all acts of worship without any form of prejudices as enshrined in the noble Qur'an and the sound Prophetic traditions.

Abstract

The life of a Muslim is fully regulated and guided by the teachings of Islam. These teachings are clearly based on the principles of moderation. A Muslim is expected to conduct himself in line with the teachings according to his ability. He must neither exceed the limit nor draw back himself to laxity in the practice of religion. However, there are certain extremist conducts that have manifested among Muslims in the contemporary period. Some of these features include: Intolerance, bigotry, excessiveness, harshness, overburdening others and oneself among others. In fact, a number of extremist conducts have manifested in the actions and attitudes of some Muslims now a days. This paper intends to examine this trend in the following key components: Apart from the introduction and conclusion, it defined the key concepts. The paper examines some extremist conducts among Muslims in contemporary period and the position of Islam on them. It further explains their causes and method of de-radicalization from Islamic perspective. Finally, the conclusion follows with some important recommendations.

Abstract

Islam condemns violence and terror of all kinds, as there is no justification for senseless and extra judicial killing. Terrorism is an evil and destructive phenomenon that inflicts pain and suffering on defenseless people. Those who have planned and perpetrated such atrocities, regardless of their religion, ideology or political beliefs, stand outside the pole of human values. As a result Islam condemns it in all ramifications. There are Muslims who claims to be religious but try to impose their views on others through force or violence. They forget that Islamic teaching advocates the fundamental principle of respect for individual freedom of conscience and belief. Islam believes that freedom of belief is a basic God-given right to all human beings. Terrorism is alien to Islam. Islam commands us to be just and to wrong no one. The methods employed in this paper are historical and analytical. Historically, the paper tends to unravel the historical events that are pertinent to the topic. While analytical method is meant to analyze the findings from the historical events, it ends with a conclusion and recommendations. In carrying out this paper, the author has relied on history books, journal, newspaper, and recent researches work on the major scholars of Arabic and Islamic Studies. At the end, the reader would have been convinced that terrorism has no base in Islam and Islam is religion of peace, calling to peace at any time at any place.

Abstract The paper focuses on the role of Muslim Women in Education and Entrepreneurship Skills

Development of the internally displaced Persons (IDPs). Without doubt, education and

entrepreneurship skills development will hold a pride of place in the life of the internally

displaced persons IDPs. No matter what endeavor the neglect of the IDPs towards skill

acquisition will create a doom for the nation because their idleness can cause a menace in

the society. It therefore highlights the role of Muslim Women in Educating and instilling

skills development among the teaming IDPs. The methodology adopted was a survey using

a random sampling questionnaires. The findings of the paper reveals that generally

Abstract

It is a known fact that, today in the whole world there are challenges, chaos and anarchy ranging from insurgency, insecurity and terrorism all as a result of extremism and radicalization. In line with the above, many countries especially in the Middle East had in established and designed programs to stop terrorism and radicalization as well as rehabilitating its victims, but were they able to achieve their aims? What impact has the program made on the targeted persons? What were the challenges faced by the program and the output of the program? This article made a clear assessment on the programs and strategies followed by different countries in managing and combating radicalization, extremism and terrorism, particularly in Saudi Arabia, Yemen etc. The paper examined the impacts, achievements challenges and successes recorded by the programs and finally suggested ways of combating and managing radicalization in Nigeria.

Abstract

Teaching of De-radicalization strategies at secondary school level is seriously needed on account that students at this level would be conscious of the fact that radicalism and terrorism are not part of Islamic conviction (Q: 48:4). This will open their minds, educate, enlighten and provide them with clear thinking and conscious understanding of the corrosive dangers of attaching themselves to radicalism and terrorism which fail to provide moral, peace, tolerant, co-operation and good living to humanity, while Islam condemns all these and provides alternative balanced of peaceful co-existence, security of life and property (Q: 4: 114).For these reasons, the paper emphasize that De-radicalization strategies system need to be taught to the future leaders of tomorrow for sustainable peace in Nigeria.

Abstract

The unthoughtful in contemporary religious perspectives, referring to the Man-made disaster sweeping our peaceful co-existence, the corrosive realm of radicalization practices, unthinkable, axiomatic, Islamically and intellectually forbidden. In recent years, Nigerian youths, the dominant majority are creative victims of radicalization practices and terrorism. Educationally bankrupt, intellectually empty, for the few in schools, majority are experts in examination malpractice and cultism. Highly religious without compassion, spirituality without Godliness. Politically are in the side of political thuggery, garbage diggers, street gangs and kidnapping. Today, radicalization practices and terrorism have given our beloved nation gold medal in the areas of suicide bombing and silver medal in mosques and churches destructions, among the committee of nations. This paper seeks to expose the roles of da’awah scholars in managing radicalization practices and terrorism in Nigeria. Islam suggested to parents and authority to constantly remove all kinds of evils in their vicinity (Q: 3: 103) and the paper recommends the utilization of elements such as faith based organizations community based organizations etc. to control breeding grounds of radicalization practices and terrorism in Nigeria.

Abstract

In recent years, Nigerian youths have become promoters of hate speeches, exclusiveness and conflict. It’s a national disaster that this paper created a state of emergency to address. Abstract

One of the major challenges of the world today is the endemic and protracted ethno-religious, ideological and political conflicts. The fact that peace and unity constitute the rhyme of Nigeria’s national anthem does not imply nonoccurrence of conflict in the country. Most of the conflict arises as a result of lack of adequate knowledge of religious tenets. This paper examines the concept of conflict, type of conflict, causes of conflict in Nigeria. It discusses the importance of Islamic teachings and admonitions such as modesty in speech, patience, tolerance, honesty, administration of justice, consultation and dialogue as a means of conflict resolution and management. The paper concludes that conflict in Nigeria can be resolved or managed through effective teaching and learning of religious tenets of Islamic Studies. It therefore recommends that Government (as a matter of urgency)should make the (compulsory) inclusion (of the teaching and learning of) Islamic Studies in the General Courses being undertaken by students in all tertiary institutions compulsory irrespective of discipline (This may also necessitate Christian Religious Studies. (for Christian students) for adequate knowledge of religious tenets of) This will enhance conflict resolution and management in Nigeria.

Abstract

One of the forbidden acts in Islam that all Muslims, most especially Islamic Studies

teachers, are expected to discourage in the society is radicalization. This can be done

through many channels, ranging from discouraging the act through curricular activities to

extra-curricular activities. This paper (therefore) contends that Islamic Studies teachers,

like other stake holders in Nigeria, have a major role to play in the (present government of

ongoing) fight against extremism. In the process, the study examined key areas wherein

Islamic Studies teachers are capable of playing vital roles in proffering workable solution

to the problem of radicalization in the society. This research work was conducted in Apapa-

Iganmu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, where selected stakeholders

were personally interviewed. Also, participant observation was conducted in selected areas

of the LCDA with a view to appraising how Islamic Studies teachers contribute to the

efforts against radicalization in the society. The study found out that many Islamic Studies

teachers in Apapa-Iganmu LCDA champion the cause of combating radicalization in the

society. The study recommends, among others, that the government should give necessary

support to Islamic Studies teachers in general and those in Apapa in particular in its efforts

to curb radicalization in the country.

The Relevance of Electronic and Social Media in De-radicalization Campaign through the Lenses of Islam

Abstract

The world today is bedeviled with the menace of violent extremism primed by the various forces of ideological radicalization in the guise of Islam. Whereas,In sharp contrast, Islam preaches wasatiyyah(moderation) against the two excesses of laxity and extremism. This trend has caused immeasurable damage to the majority peace-loving members of the Muslim Ummah by (making) portraying every Muslim as a potential terrorist thereby (growing the prospects of) fuelling the embersof Islamophobia. Varying avenues are used in radicalizing the minds of especially Muslim youth across the globe which include the use of the print, electronic and social media platforms. Such instruments include books, television and radio as well as the likes of privately owned Facebook pages, twitter handles, YouTube channels, etc. (by individuals and organizations). This paper aims at explicating the relevance of such electronic and social media agents in de-radicalization campaign from the viewpoint of Islam. Through these, the narratives of the violent groups could be properly countered with minimal use of military force which apparently succeeds in subduing the radicals but not necessarily the ideology of radicalism. Descriptive and explanatory methods would be employed in analyzing the issues. The paper hypothesizes that(,) Islam has a formidable mechanism for preventing violent extremism (PVE) via many of its systems and institutions.

Community Policing and its Place in Islam

Abstract

Islam as religion and complete way of life provided a divine guidance for peaceful human life which if properly followed the society and its individual members become(s) safe, well protected and guided to the straight path. However, no matter how religious, pious and godly a society becomes, some of its members would still be mis-guided by devils in the name of religion which if not properly checked could rise and eventually devastate the security and peace enjoyed by the community. One of the ways to check the occurrence of terrorism, crimes, mis-guidance and corrupt ideologies is through community policing. Therefore, this paper is an attempt to analyze some of the Islamic guidelines and strategies on community policing for the prevention of terrorism, mis-guidance, corrupt and radical ideologies. The research uses and relies on the divine commandments contained in the glorious Qur’an, Ahadith and historical facts of the early Muslims. The findings of the paper reveal that more than 1400 years ago Islam brought the best guidelines and strategies for effective community policing (when)and it enjoins its followers to be extra –ordinarily vigilant(, sensitive, conscious, mindful, watchful, committed, practicable, proactive and preventive against) to forestall (terrorism,) radicalism (and criminal activity) by using their power, hand, tongue or heart. The paper also discovered that Islam considers community policing as a shared responsibility(, hence, its) farḍkifāyah. The paper calls all and sundry regardless of their religious inclination to contribute their quota for building sustainable peace and security since Islam views the issue of security and policing a shared responsibility between the state, community and individual(s) persons.

Abstract

Because of its significance, many people take pains in reminding the world about it, in ways such as its principles on how to acquire a good, beneficial knowledge and how to eventually pass it on to others in an unbroken transmission. In al-Taclīm learning principle are richly arranged and reasonably presented. These principles of learning as identified in Ta’lim received remarkable recognition among scholars around the world. The original Arabic text has been translated by many scholars and given different English equivalents. (Instructing the learner as rightly put by Khaled). This paper critically (aims to access)examines‘Ta’lim al-mutalim-tariq al-Ta’allum(, instructing learner as well as)to find out whether or not the principles are found and applied in schools in Nasarawa State Nigeria. It is the objective of this paper to assess whether the applicability of the principle exists in (most, if not all the) schools in Nasarawa State Nigeria. (The study intends to use any existing published and unpublished materials, relevant to the history, development and application of learning principles.) The research adopts historical, analytical and descriptive methodology. Conclusively the research recommends that owing to the uniqueness of al-zarnuji’s learning principles, efforts should be made by the authorities that are saddled with the responsibilities of curriculum development to adopt the principles.

Abstract

This paper is written in response to a specific need of de-radicalization among Muslims in Nigeria which is the theme of this conference. The author tries to highlight the relevance of Religious Studies in the mother-tongue as a means of deradicalization. Most religious bigots and extremists monopolize the use of Arabic language to translate religious precepts to their followers out of context to suit the (ideology)doctrine they are propagating. (Our)Local languages which aresupposed to be the medium through which (we)people read, learn, instruct and assess have lost that relevance; hence (we)they are at the mercy of different interpretations of scholars and thereby (we) are distanced (away) from the(ir) (real)authentic teachings of Islam (and made to become contemptuous of others). It is a factor worth considering that hostility is more pronounced between religious followers of different sects in Islam than between Muslims and non-Muslims. This shows how best people internalize(d) what they learn from their scholars, right or wrong. Conversely, it is the view of this writer that the present state of radicalism and intolerance is a result of some leading factors which are brought to bear in peoples’ religious life, one of which is how some self-appointed custodians of religion have robbed them of their real understanding of Islam through language manipulations. Therefore, an attempt here is made to analyze the relevance of translating religious writings into the mother tongue to get rid radicalization among Muslims.

Abstract Da‘wah is used to refer to the act of conveying or calling people to accept the message of Islam. Da‘wah is a collective responsibility of all Muslim communities, and Muslim women have played vital roles in discharging this responsibility. In Nasarawa State of Nigeria, the participation of women in Da‘wah has contributed in reducing political crisis. The research combines both library and field research methods. The library data comprises primary sources of Islamic Law which are the Qur’an and Sunnah and their commentaries. Ideas and views of Muslim scholars on Da‘wah were also obtained, examined and properly analyzed. Data were also collected from the writings of Muslims and non-Muslims on the subject-matter in books, journals, newspapers, magazines, workshops, conferences and seminar papers. It was revealed from the analysis that the women Da‘wah groups in Nasarawa State are numerous and that they have contributed in no small way in reducing the problems of political crisis in the state. This has been likened to several reasons: one of which is calling the attention of people (both men and women) to stay away from involving themselves in participating in political crises and the need to be good ambassadors of Islam. Another contribution advanced by the interviewees, as analyzed, is that of educating the people on the teachings of Islam concerning their role in participating in the election process. The research recommends that government as well as private individuals should show readiness to augment the efforts of the women Da‘wah groups in Nasarawa State through financial and any other support to get them well prepared to the service of Allah whenever and wherever they are called upon to deliver the Da‘wah services; The women Da‘wahgroups, especially the FOMWAN, should (try and) identify from amongst (them)members those who are at home with the leading languages of the community where their programmes (is)are held, so that even if it means holding two sessions (one in English and the other in the language of the community in question) in order to get their message well delivered.

Erroneous interpretations of religion to suit violent tendencies and religious intolerance have remained a major bane on the Nigerian nation. Experts adjudged Nigeria as the country that witnessed the highest number of religious related violence in the world, due to the frequent occurrences of clashes that are rooted in religious convictions. Nigeria has experienced two major crises that have devastating effects on its wellbeing, and have caused the loss of thousands of lives, displaced millions of people and consumed billions of government revenues. These crises are the Maitatsine crisis of the 1980s and the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast. These crises are rooted in erroneous discernment of religious ordinances and doctrines. This paper examines the secularist’s theory of government non-interference in religion, and the Islamic theory of religion as the primary objective of the State, vis-à-vis the negative socio- economic consequences of government’s non-interest and non-interference in the activities of religious groups is causing the peace and development of Nigeria. The paper proposes government participation and monitoring of the teachings of religious groups, to prevent cropping up of radical tendencies.

The continue emergence of radical groups after the 9/11 USA event has become a subject of concern by security experts, governments, academics among others. This is with the aim of providing lasting solution to future radical acts among the Ummah. Therefore, this paper explores the origin and development of radicalism among Muslims in Africa and particularly in Nigeria. It also studies the condition of re-educating and re-integrating returnees into the Muslim community. The study adopts qualitative approach which observes that radicalism in Nigeria would continue to become an issue due to ineffective approach of full-detention and severe punishment that sometimes lead to death in the name of de-radicalizing those apprehended. Soft approaches such as re-education of the suspects to change their mind-sets, rehabilitation through judicial intervention and aftercare programmes in order to empower the returnees to be reintegrated into the society should be employed. These ideas have been adopted in many countries of the world in de-radicalizing the returnees and yield positively like in Saudi Arabia which recorded a success rate of 80–90 percent. In other words, only 35 of the 1,400 rehabilitated radicals who completed these programmes and were released had been rearrested. The use of well-planned philanthropic scheme through entrepreneurship skills to peacefully integrate this category of people into the Ummahshould be adopted. This should include; establishment of skills acquisition centers to empower this category of people in order to economically become self-reliant.

Abstract

Da’wah (inviting) people to the path of Allah is the main duty of the Prophets of Allah and a continued religious obligation upon every believer at any given time and place. This is expected to go on at inter and intra levels of Muslims’ relations. The essence of Da’wah is to change human attitudes for better and remove all sorts of evils and amoral behaviours in human life for him to attain a better life here and in the hereafter. However, circumstances surrounding the time, place, persons and issues involved in the cause of Da’wah are very important in determining the methods and approach to be employed in carrying out this important religious task. That is why the Prophet (SAW), like all other Prophets of Allah, was trained on the ethics and methods of Da’wah and was obliged to abide by them for him to succeed in his mission otherwise he may not achieve the desired goals. Failure to adopt the appropriate method(s) in Da’wah may worsen the situation and create more evils than benefits. This research paper attempts to find out the Prophet’s manner as a Da’iyah, what were his methodologies in Da’wah, to what extent did his methodology help in achieving success and to what extent will the application of the Prophet’s Da’wah methodology help in actualizing the cardinal objectives of Da’wah today. The paper will try to make some comparative analysis on the Da’wah activities and personalities in the two eras.

Abstract

It is a fact that is obvious to most observers, that Nigeria is strategically becoming an area to recruiters of radical groups for their self-fish interest, especially, the politicians. This is with the sole aim of social, religious or political goals. To this end, violent extremist ideologies are gaining an unprecedented level of traction across religious groups on the country, especially among the Muslims and Christians. Through observation and analytical approach, it is the hope of this paper to explore the level of prevalence of radicalism among the followers of two major religions (Islam and Christianity) in Nigeria. The inter-play between cultural, religious, political and societal factors brings about changes in the trend of drama in Nigeria where most of the writers resorted to the use of their daily experiences in writing their works. This article study carries testimony to the fact that writers of Arabic drama are high refute when it comes to adherence to the conventional guidelines of Drama as a specialization also explains the factors that impacted positively on the Arabic drama and critically surveys the characters used in it, how it showcase political impact and ideology of de-radicalization.

This make some Muslims and people of other faith positioned Islam as a religion of violence and radicalization. But the real teaching of Islam is good, mercy and justice. Going by the teaching of Islam as discussed by different literatures the ideal and normative relationship which Islam prescribes is clear in the Qur’an and life of the holy Prophet SAW which is that of goodness, mercy and Justice as can be seen in the life of the Prophet Muhammad SAW as expantiated by different literatures. The purpose of this research is to give a clear picture of Islam by using both primary and secondary sources of Islamic law for anyone to see the beauty of Islam in promoting just relationship and how Islam counter radicalization. Abstract Purposeful leadership is the bedrock of any society big or small, known or unknown, and for it to run efficiently, there must be a system in place to ensure that events and activities are controlled reasonably to achieve their desired goals. Nigeria as a country is not occupying her place of pride amongst the committee of nations, if we are to compare her present status with countries like Malaysia and Singapore with which she attained political independence in the 1960s. Abstract

Community policing approaches have been used successfully to prevent crime, reduce fear of crime, and improve public safety. Nigeria as a Country, has over the last few years tried several approaches on “the war against terrorism, kidnappers, arms banditry, cattle rustlers and politically motivated crimes based on interest”. However, none of these have been stamped out completely. The purpose of this study was to find out ways in which the philosophy of community policing could be modeled to fit citizen based-counter crime strategy in Nigeria. The objectives being; to identify risk factors that drive youth to radicalization, to establish the typical characteristics, features and behavioral patterns of radicalized youth and related activities; to establish how principles of community policing can assist in the identification of radicalized youth and to elicit suggestions on how to solve the problem of youth radicalization within the country. This was done by exploring the role of law enforcement agencies and community partnership in the prevention of youth radicalization to violence. The study adopted interviews and personal observation as a method for data collection where both closed and open ended questions were used to collect quantitative data from the respondents. This study therefore establishes the feasibility of police-public partnerships in addressing risk factors that predispose youth to radicalization within Nigeria. Premised on mutual interest and trust, such partnerships are likely to promote a common understanding of the causes and drivers of youth radicalization within the country.

uncultivated Valley through misinterpreting Qur’anic verses and traditions of the prophet

Muhammad (SAW) and sometimes through using power to conscripts and force whosoever

try to repel their evil notions in to pointless brutal war in the name of uplifting Allah’s

religion. This paper through context analysis attempt to find out that, is the act of de-

radicalization have any place in Islamic religion? Is there any a specific group of Muslims

called “Radical Muslims”? as some western writers tried to concoct the name and apply it

on some selected type of Muslims? What are the Islamic rulings on whom so ever killed

an innocent Muslim? Among others, the paper revealed that radicalization has no any

connection with fundamental principles of Islamic religion, lastly the paper recommends

that; the act de-radicalization has no remedy than the Muslim Ummah to go back to the

ABSTRACT This paper is an attempt to present a brief historical survey on the origin and development of Boko-Haram in Nigeria. Boko Haram started in the North-East Geo-political Zone which covered Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe and Taraba States. The Headquarters of the movement was Maiduguri. Boko-Haram spread to other states such as Kano, Katsina and Kaduna. It was also present in Ilorin and Ibadan during its early emergence around late 1988 and 1993. Boko-Haram became known to the Muslim Ummah by the year 1999 and secured followers in 2007 when Muhammad Yusuf became the leader of the movement. This Boko-Haram leader use to go around to other neigbouring states especially Adamawa, Kano, Katsina and Kaduna States to preach as well as explain the Ideology of his movement – Jama’atAhliSunnah Li Da’awatiWal-Jihad. Through such preaching tours, Muhammad Yusuf became known to the public including some Journalists in Kaduna who held some interviews and Muqabalah with him. In view of his radical views and ideologies he became well known and his followership increased. The Boko-Haram as a movement has been impacted by some Muslim Sects, Organizations, Associations and Movements. However, the ideological teachings and radical ideas were alleged to be imported from the Middle-East, that is the Islamic countries from where the founders of Boko-Haram – Jama’atAhliSunnah Li-Da’awatiWal Jihad had studied. This Muslim Sects, Organizations, Associations, Movements and Sufi orders in Nigeria from 1930C.E to 2018C.E, some of these were carefully selected with a view to reflect fully on how they were impacted by the wahabi-Salifi and Madhahib-Sufi Schools of Law relating to their Islamic thought in general and oriented influences in specific terms. Islam has its meanings, definitions, concepts, teachings and philosophies both in limited and broader perspectives. The Glorious Qur’an, the Sunnah, the Ijma’ of the early Muslims. The Salaf Al-Salih had explained rightly, the fundamental teachings of Islam which should be followed, adopted and practiced. Prophet Muhammad (SAW), the Sahabah, the Tabi’un, the Tabi’u-Tabi’in and the Khalaf must be the sources of guidance for the Muslim Ummah. The later Muslim Generations; seventh to fifteenth, centuries A.H went through the different periods and stages of the evolution and development of Islam, its teachings and sources. The nineteenth and the twentieth centuries Christian era saw the emergence of different Aqa’id (Beliefs and Ideologies) with regard to teaching, practicing and application of Islamic thought and philosophy. There is no doubt that foreign religious, spiritual, cultural, traditional and different Islamic teachings were brought to Nigeria. This led to the emergence of wrong ideologies of Jama’atAhl’al – Sunnah Li-Al Da’awatiwa Al-Jihad Alias Boko Haram in Nigeria. Boko-Haram has inflicted grievous damages against Islam, the Muslim Ummah,

and the North-East Geo-political Zone all in the name of Tajdeed. The Adherents – Followers of Boko-Haram were mainly Youth who had wanted to bring about Islamic change in Nigeria taking Maiduguri – Borno State as their base. The Boko-haram ideologies, were no doubt, based on wrong Islamic sources. How do we then Re-De-Radicalise the sectarian ideologies of the ‘Boko-Haram’ with a view to bring them back to the fall of Islam? This is what the paper intends to present. The paper adopts some methodologies and strategies through advise, suggestions and recommendations with a view curve out as well as facilitate the whipping out of the Boko-Haram movement hence compelling it to become extinct in Nigeria. In order to succeed in the write-up, the paper comprise of seven sections including introduction and conclusion. Appropriate notes and references shall be provided for the paper.

Abstract

Recently, fame through academic works and achievements (including wealth in some quarters) is becoming the only perimeter through which the worth of a scholar is measured at least in our society. It may though be said that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and that everyone is entitled to his priority, the attendant consequence of this trend has made volatile many parts of Nigeria. The trend has, among other things, radicalised some supposed young Muslim scholars. Haughtiness, egotism, cheating, dishonest, oppression, selfishness, envy and greed, among other personal evil traits, have generated to communal youth radicalism. This work finds that piety, asceticism, humility, sincerity, brotherhood, selflessness, humanitarianism and devotion are Qur’ānic Virtues capable of eliminating the identified evil traits in the young scholars and thereby create a society devoid of youth radicalism. The paramount focus of this paper is to establish that the identified de-radicalising virtues are ordained by Allah and that each of these virtues is traceable in the worthy life of the late Professor Hashir A. AbdulSalam. It is therefore recommended that Muslim young scholars learn the application of these virtues via the way of life of the don. The societies are recommended to examine the lives of individuals who could be role models to the youth so that the future adults are removed from radicalism which have dealt great blow to the present generation. The survey research method was employed for the study. This selected methodology aptly included narrative and analytical procedures. Key Words: Hashir A. Abstract

Islam as a way of life teaches/lays several ways of inviting people to Allah’s course. It also teaches tolerance and effective methods of inviting “other people” to the way of God without violence or quarrels. The ways some people who claim to wage war against polytheists in the present millennium behave thereby showing some pictures of radicalism, call for real reconsideration and re-examination of the real meaning of Da’wah.Da’wah as the real meaning implies of inviting people to Islam has methodology expressly stated in the Glorious

Qur’an. The ways and methodology, if strictly followed, will work and would not result to violence or causing loss of lives or property as it is being witnessed nowadays. Da’wah method requires Hikmah(Wisdom) and Maw’izat-ul-Hasanat (Good exhortations) as Qu’ran 16:125 expatiates thus... Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious. It is as a result of using Hikmah and Maw’izat-Hasanah that this paper intends to use the divine steps of deradicalization to teach the ways using some Qur’anic exegesis in inviting people to the religion of Islam and using an acceptable approach. This is what in meant by deradicalization in the modern Islamic Da’wah.

Abstract

Radicalization remains one of the most serious threats to peace and security in Nigeria. The problem has taken different dimension especially since May 1999, when the nation returned to democratic rule. Radical group especially th e Boko Haram largely use young men and foot soldiers, to perpetrate violence. Ignorance of Islamic teachings which abhor violence makes children more susceptible and inclined to recruitment into Boko Haram. Children with difficult upbringings are more vulnerable to extremist views. The growing number of children without adequate parental guidance is a societal condition that has contributed to the problem of youth radicalization in Northern Nigeria. Children who lack a protective social environment are more likely to be exploited. Across the states in Nigeria, especially in the north, millions of school-age children are not enrolled the school, exacerbating illiteracy levels in the country and vulnerably to manipulation by extremist groups. Widespread poverty in northern Nigeria has contributed to a growing population of destitute children. The children’s alienation from home and society provides the cognitive opening that extremist ideologues exploit in the process of recruitment and radicalization. This paper examines Islam and De-radicalization in Nigeria: Child Rights Perspective that is, application of Islamic child rights as panacea to radicalization, especially the Boko Haram extremism. The ideals of child rights constitute one of the fundamental values of Islamic human rights.
