Spreading The Gospel in Belize for 47 Years
In 1969, Roebuck Parkway sent Luther
Savage to then British Honduras. He was the first
missionary to the country now called Belize. Quot-
ing Luther Savage, “when I went to Belize the
Church of Christ was not there”. Due to difficulties
from the Belizean government, diseases, etc., Lu-
ther Savage stayed about 1 year. The day he was
scheduled to return home, he baptized Melvin
Davis in May of 1970. He had no way of knowing
the influence Brother Melvin would have estab-
lishing Church in Belize.
From 1979 to 1981, Melvin attended Preston Road
School of Preaching in Dallas, graduated and be-
came the minister in Belize City in 1981. The
church prospered in Belize City under Melvin’s
leadership and by campaigns conducted by Roe-
buck Parkway each year. Young men from the
Belize City church, matured in the church and they
in turn began establishing congregations in areas
around Belize City and throughout the country (see
map). James Garay became minister in Hattieville,
his son, Jason Garay in Belmopan, Lincoln Jones
in Burrell Boom, Albert Longsworth in Ladyville
& Crooked Tree, Rayon Gordon in Dangriga &
Silk Grass, and Ray Kelley in San Pedro.
Campaigns from Roebuck Parkway continued in
these established churches. On one of these cam-
paigns, Brother Leroy Owens baptized Cecil Gill
who became the minister in Independence and
later his son, Kenyon Gill became the minister in
Punta Gorda. In 2004 during a campaign in Independence, a young man named Clayton Guzman, who was a member there, decided he wanted to be-
come a preacher. Roebuck Parkway sent him to preaching school and after graduating, Clayton became the
minister in Corozal & Libertad. Today there are 10 preachers in 12 congregations throughout Belize that
began in Belize City along with Roebuck Parkway campaigns.
In the past 41 years, there have been many families at Roebuck who have been on campaigns to Belize,
some went 1 time, some as many as 60 times. Every effort made to support this work is important to con-
tinuing the spread of the Gospel in Belize. Please consider becoming involved in the Belize work by going
on campaigns and contributing on Mission Sunday, May 1st.
And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who
preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!” Rom. 10:15

MISSION SUNDAY and Individual Mission Requests Through the years we have received numerous re-quests for help on mission trips. As part of our policy we have limited our help to those involved in the teaching or preaching of the gospel or to helping some prepare them-selves for a life of preaching the truth. We have tried es-pecially to help those who have some connection with the church here or those who might be recommended to us for help. We have helped with a number of one time sup-ports to those going on foreign mission trips. A few of these include: Katie Coggins – Australia; Charles Shep-herd – Jamaica; Frank Wampol – India; Milton McArthur – Zimbabwe, Africa; Jewel Pender – Fiji; Tim Hayes – Viet-nam and Singapore; Philip and Laura Jenkins – Cho-luteca, Honduras; Scot Wilson – Pohnpei Micronesia; Drew Taggart – Ukraine and Lowell White – Honduras. We have given $1,000.00 as a one-time gift to help support Clayton P. Johnson in his training at Bear Valley Bible Institute. Brother Johnson came highly rec-ommended to us and we felt he was worthy of our support in this way. In addition to helping individuals going on mission trips we have helped a number of works supported by other congregations. The Forest Park church needed help in sending a container full of clothing to Panama for the Children’s Home. The church helped by giving $500.00 to help pay for the cost of shipping that container. In 2014 we sent $175.00 to aid the Latin Ameri-can Missions work of the Forrest Park congregation. This money was used to purchase Bibles for shipment to the mission work being done in Honduras. Joey Treat whom we supported for years in the work in Micronesia began a TV program to help spread the gospel throughout the islands. To do this they needed to buy a professional camera priced at $3,500. We were able to send them $500.00 to help in purchasing that cam-era. Brother Mike Knappier, who has held a gospel meeting for us, is involved in a very unique work they are doing in preaching the gospel in Africa. They began what is known as “The Gospel Chariots.” This has proven to be the most effective way to reach out to the people of Africa. They have two large trucks traveling through11 countries conducting gospel meetings. The trucks have a number of chairs that can be set up for the people in the villages they visit, a portable baptistery and a sound system. Through these efforts they have baptized more than 15,000 souls. They also continue to teach new converts and encourage brethren to get Bible degrees through Nations University and to plant churches of Christ. We have made two differ-ent contributions of $500.00 to help keep these trucks op-erating. There are so many good works that are being done and thanks to your generosity we have been blessed to have a part in more than we could do on our own. Please keep these works in your thoughts as you contemplate what you will give this year on Mission Sun-day.
